Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay
Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay Alan Horn, President of Warner Brothers, has issued a statement in response to the large amount of disappointment from their decision to delay Half-Blood Prince until July 17th, 2009:

Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability. The decision to move “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support. If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between “Half-Blood Prince” and the much-anticipated first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which opens in November 2010. So although we have to wait a little longer for “Half-Blood Prince,” the wait from that film until “Deathly Hallows” will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.

I fully agree with Ginmo. WB must be boycotted, and there are several ways to do so. For example: d) don't watch other Warner Bros movies! I just think it's necessary to let them know if you are not watching their other movies, so they can see they are losing money because of us.

Posted by Shaggybull Aug 20th 2008

ok, so for starters they said that the trailer would be out when "get smart" come out, went saw it and no trailer. so then WB said that they are sorry and the trailer would be out at the latest when "dark night" came out, and yeah... no trailer. then they say oh, we are terribly sorry (we just got everyone to see 2 movie to see a trailer we said would come out and didn't come) money in there pockets. so finally it came out on aol, at 9pm late july/early aug or something. and now they want even more money from us as if the usa economy wasn't crap already. i am going to be boycotting all there movies and most deff HBP for all this. they talk all this crap about caring about us and the movie they cut everything out of the book to make a short cheap film as it is. be true about it. and for that matter the late summer everyone is broke and getting ready to go off to school! we need make myspace/facebook group for our boycott haha

Posted by harmonymakesmesick Aug 20th 2008

Good lord what is wrong with them? They don't have to lie! We know they don't care about us. BEcause if they did, they wouldn't have bloody changed it in the first place! And who cares if the wait for DH is shorter now? They just made the wait for HBP a whole lot longer!!! They call that silver lining? It's not even bronze lining! IT's "Say something random to try and apease our idiotic fans". Well, we're not stupid! We're perfectly aware of what they're doing and why they're doing it. I mean, they could at least tell us the truth and say, "Fans of Harry Potter, we really don't care about you at all, just your money, and so we've decided to move HBP to next summer just to get more of your money, because we're greedy and self centered and don't care that you would like to see the moive in three months instead of over 300 days."

Posted by SproutMdme Aug 20th 2008

Regarding the writers' strike as an excuse to postpone the film release; this is CORPORATE-SPEAK: instead of 'We pass the savings on on to you', Warner Brothers has basically said, 'We pass our errors on to you'. Big Corps screw writers and other artists, then when they don't make the profits that they usually enjoy, they make the consumer pay the price. Big businesses no longer takes responsibility for their own actions.

Posted by _stephxcore Aug 20th 2008

My friend is convinced that it was moved back because they didn't want to compete with Twilight - YEAH RIGHT. As if Twilight has anything on Harry Potter!

Posted by elloraluna Aug 20th 2008

If production is on time, then what is the wait this is supposed to be "worth" for??? I won't even be able to see it in the theater now that it has been moved to summer.

Posted by General_Martok Aug 20th 2008

If there is one this I don't like, it's is condescending people like this Dementor in charge at WB. This drivel he has responded with is an insult to our intelligence. All he has to say is "We're doing this because we can and you can't do a darn thing about it, you mere commoners." Well WB can forget about me seeing any more of their films at theatres, with the exception of HP movies, and they can also forget about getting any cash from me on opening weekend. On a personal note, Mr Horn, puq vo' Fek'lur SoH ghaj ghobe' quv.

Posted by yues_woman Aug 20th 2008

Yeah, we don't believe you.

Posted by Alsnana Aug 20th 2008

WHY JKR SAY ANYTHING?????

Posted by Sectumsempra84 Aug 20th 2008

And what guarantee do we have that the WB won't move the release date of The Deathly Hallows? It is going to be released in the winter like the Half-Blood Prince, and they pushed Half-Blood into the summer, so who's to say that the WB won't do the same thing to The Deathly Hallows when the time to release it gets closer?

Posted by MidwestMuggle Aug 20th 2008

Alan Horns picture makes me want to spit on my screen everytime i see it. So far Ive only spit 10 times. Please take down his stupid ugly mug as soon as possilble! Thanks.

Posted by NessaGiyen Aug 20th 2008

You know I can respect a boycott I really can but if people are going to do it then do it right and don't see the movie at all. Going around and sneaking into the movies or downloading it just to make a point but still "eat your cake" is possibly the lowest thing I've heard so far. Your criticizing WB for not having morals? listen to your own.

Posted by beth_28 Aug 20th 2008

This is so depressing....we've waited all year for the release in november, and they just change the release date with 3 months to go. They just give us the trailer like 2 weeks ago, and then out from nowhere just push it back EIGHT months. I really wish they would change it so the release date is much sooner. This is making me go crazy! Please ppl, try as much as you can to try and make a difference. DA FOREVER!

Posted by shawnz1028 Aug 20th 2008

Yeah as much as I would like to boycot WB The Dark Knight was just too good for me not to buy the DVD. Sorry.

Posted by miss_marauder Aug 20th 2008

I really don

I really don

Posted by miss_marauder Aug 20th 2008

lol, my comment keeps getting cut off when i post it, i can't be bothered 2 write it again.

Posted by Lily_potter323 Aug 20th 2008

Thanks for ruining everything JERK! i wish deathly hallows was one part *sigh* just another attempt to get money out of us!

Posted by beth_28 Aug 20th 2008

I agree Lily_potter323. The only reason they made deathly hallows into two parts is the same reason for the HBP delay...MONEY! Honestly for deathly hallows id sit through a six hour movie to have it in one part.. :)

Posted by twin_hermione Aug 20th 2008

What makes me the maddest is the excuse that "well then there will be less time between HBP and DH part one." Yeah like that make us feel better. And the worst part is that it is all a ploy to make more money, just like splitting DH in half...more movie +more money, it makes me sick

Posted by miss_marauder Aug 21st 2008

I really don't think people should criticise Twilight just because its taking HP's spot. It's a great book, with interesting (and very hot) characters. Although I will always treasure Harry Potter as my all time favourite book series, Twilight isn't half bad, so why don't you all just retract your claws a bit.

Posted by Aliwali Aug 21st 2008

What the hell? Thats not a consolation!! We're not stupid, Alan Horn, we can work out that DH has less of a gap to wait after HBP when it is moved. That doesn't make it any closer. If thats all your staff can think of they should be fired!!!!! The fans of Harry Potter are not freaks and children, we are educated people who know when they are being ripped off. Stop trying to pretend you're not motivated by greed when there is no other possible reason for moving HBP to next year. Don't just sell out. Harry Potter will make a killing no matter when it is released. (The only good thing about this is we get Twilight a month earlier)

Posted by ginmo Aug 21st 2008

NessaGiyen- how is it wrong to not give a corrupt business what they want, but still be able to want to see the movie? I want to see the movie because it's not the movie makers and actors I'm mad at, it's WB. (and I don't feel the need to buy a ticket for the acotrs and actresses because they're all REALLY big multi-millionaires anyway. My dollar isn't going to make the difference.)

Posted by RKRK1313 Aug 21st 2008

this response was not only inadequate, it was insulting. the little bit about there being a silver lining is the most insulting... basically he is trying to dodge the fact that this was a greedy decision made with purely money on the mind and instead is trying to blow smoke at us fans, which of course we can see through. he doesn't actually care... he's just trying to put a band-aid over a bullet hole. that may sound overdramatic, but it's the simple truth. taking away a film that was just a few months within our reach can be equated to nothing less than a gunshot wound to our time and again faithful patience. we have been so patient during every 2 year period it took to make a Potter film, meanwhile we saw large productions such as Lord of the Rings pass us by, products of responsible planning (the LOTR films were made back to back, thus allowing the release of a new film every consecutive year starting in 2003). so they repay us by making us wait even more? it's not really even the wait... its the reason: i would have gladly accepted a delay if they had said "we need more time to edit and reshoot some principle scenes in order to give you the best possible product" but instead they chose to make the call based on the amount of money they would make. do they honestly believe that they can replicate the success of the dark knight? because, let's be real: the dark knight was successful because heath ledger died, there were some spectacular cinematic performances (namely heath ledger), and flawless storytelling combined with seamless editing. now, unless a principle actor of HBP is going to die in the coming year (and simultaneously deliver a buzzworthy, knockout performance -- don't count on it, as much as we love the hp movies, we have to admit that the acting is subpar), and unless the editors decide they want to rid HBP of choppy transitions and gaping plotholes that are the result of scenes left in the cutting room (don't count on it) then its not going to happen...

Posted by arwyn Aug 21st 2008

more lip service??????? yup still calling for a boycott of WB

Posted by RKRK1313 Aug 21st 2008

....as popular as harry potter is, it simply doesn't have the same ingredients that the dark knight and titanic did to hit it big, even during the summer movie season. it may make slightly more money than it would in november, but honestly, that difference is basically pocket change.... $25 million more, perhaps? Maybe even $50 million? Give me a break... are they really that desperate for money that they'll delay the movie by 8 months? anyway, this whole fiasco is so infuriating that I will without a doubt be boycotting the opening weekend/week.

Posted by phoenixtears8907 Aug 21st 2008

WB has absolutly no reason to change the release date. Its Harry Potter for one thing. And will make the same amount of money on any day that it was released. Heck I would go see it if there was a blizzard outside. It's the fact that they changed it after they released the trailer with the November 21 release date on it. They can't just tease us like that and expect us not to be uspet. For one thing WB does NOT care about the fans. That is why we can't give up. The fans have already made an impact on WB because of this new statement. DO NOT GIVE UP!! We can't let WB push us around like we are little stupid kids. We are Harry Potter fans and we will not be messed with!! WB you suck!!

Posted by Poloz_fury8 Aug 21st 2008

"The Harry Potter Fandom is, varied, ever-changing and eternal. Fighting them is like fighting a many-headed monster, which, each time a neck is severed, sprouts a head even fiercer and cleverer than before. You are fighting that which is unfixed, mutating, indestructible."

Posted by DoctorDonna Aug 21st 2008

What a sad excuse for an apology. He can't possibly think we believe any of this garbage.

Posted by horcrux_gp Aug 21st 2008

THANK YOU, NessaGiyen!!!! Yes!!! All of this is stupid!! ITS A darn MOVIE AND THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE THAN TRYING TO BOYCOTT A COMPANY TO WHICH YOU

Think Harry Potter is over the hill? Think the boy wizard no longer garners fanaticism among his fans? Think again, muggle! Upon hearing that Warner Bros. would delay the release of the sixth film from November to June, fans turned to the Web to voice their displeasure in ALL CAPS. Warner Bros., eager to keep the herd of angry nerds from storming its gates, quickly responded. The president of the studio, Alan Horn, released a statement explaining that the decision was not taken lightly, and even pointed out a silver lining. With the sixth film, "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince," pushed back until June, fans won't have to wait as long between it and the seventh (and final) flick, scheduled for a November 2010 release. As far as silver linings go, this one is stretching it, especially if the last film gets delayed as well. But the fact that a studio president responded to online grumbling is, in and of itself, news. Various stories focusing on the delay cast a spell over the Buzz, including this cheeky item from Defamer. For anyone who wants to read Mr. Horn's full letter, MovieWeb has a copy of the entire missive. And, for the hardcore Harry worshipers, CNET reports that Scholastic will sponsor an all-day read-a-thon of the boy wizard's first adventure. The event will be broadcast live on the Web on September 23 (barring any delays).

Apparently "The Dark Knight" (which is now the SECOND highest grossing film of all time) didn't make enough money for WB. Though I do understand that they would get more revenue for a summer-release instead of a Fall-release, did they really have to push it that far back? If they were going to delay it, I would think the best time would be Christmas (THIS YEAR, of course).

Posted by CaShEw_luvs_HP Aug 21st 2008

ok im just as pissed as the rest of yall but what would boycotting even do? and y the hell would i boycott opening weekend im gonna b there at midnight waitin in line 4 tickets!!! but it is still extremely messed up

Posted by NessaGiyen Aug 21st 2008

NessaGiyen- how is it wrong to not give a corrupt business what they want, but still be able to want to see the movie? (and I don't feel the need to buy a ticket for the acotrs and actresses because they're all REALLY big multi-millionaires anyway. My dollar isn't going to make the difference.) -------- So if you say your dollar isn't going to make a difference then why boycott. Where is this moral conviction and outrage I keep hearing about? I'm just saying if people want to boycott hey thats their right but if you want to really send a message have a little backbone and don't see it at all. Another thing, A corrupt business? To you, WB is a corrupt business? ..Wow you just blew my mind with that one. Bet you didn't you didn't think they were so corrupt when they came out with the first Potter movie.

Posted by duer31 Aug 21st 2008

I'm not too bothereed by it being moved back some, cause it comes out on my birthday now. :D Now that's what I call a great birthday present!

Posted by MrsLunaLongbottom Aug 21st 2008

GRRRRR. They claim to have "protected the integrity of the books?" Yeah right! This is all because of those stupid Twilight books. I have read them, and they are NOTHING. Nothing in general, less than nothing compared to Potter. And by the way, Mattrixed, I don't think it's fair to say that the movie's not ours. If none of us went to it, the revenue would half (especially as many of us go and see it multiple times.) Although there are plenty of non-fan watchers, we are the ones that give Potter the publicity and income it deserves. There aren't many fan bases who have done so much, and it would be good if they thought about the fan reaction.

Posted by eewen708 Aug 21st 2008

this sucks they only want the money and they say its worth the wait!I mean whats the difference there will still be a 2 year gap between OOTP & HBP

Posted by eewen708 Aug 21st 2008

and 1 more thing. MrsLunaLongbottom is right its only because of those twilight books and they suck compared to harry potter. i read like 20 pages and i am already kinda bored with the story

Posted by smaug_01 Aug 21st 2008

Do WB seriously believe they make more money by releasing the movie in July next year then in November. It just goes too show that the average guy in the street as more business sense then all of the WB executives put together. Releasing HB next July they being putting it up against several movies for other studios, while if released this autum it won't be up against anything. Alan Hope better pray that this decision doesn't go pear shape, as his masters at Sony might not be too happy and he finds hiself looking for work in the vacancy section.

Posted by greypoupon Aug 21st 2008

To everyone who is boycotting: You seriously need to get WB's full attention if you want it to work, and there

Posted by greypoupon Aug 21st 2008

Got cut off, whatever. If we want to get anything done, we need an influential spokesperson to get our voices heard. Plain and simple. We are just a bunch of whining fans to WB right now, and we need to let them know we mean business.

BITE ME Horn!!!!!

I've got two words for you evil-Alan-Horn-idiot-WB-P erson-Man: THAT'S BULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HATE ALAN HORN AND WB !!!!!!!! *sniff tear* and I used to love them..... *sob sob* WHY US?!?!?! WHAT DID WE POOR HP FANS EVER DO TO DESERVE THIS?!??!?!?! CURSE YOU ALAN HORN A MILLION TIMES OVER!!!!!!

Posted by DaGreek Aug 21st 2008

I'm still so upset at this. My friends and I (6 of us) booked a trip to London AND a hotel because we wanted to see the last two movies in England as a special thing. We were going to see HBP in November and then Part 2 of DH in London when the flights and stuff were bookable. I'm REAL upset. We can't get our flights back now unless we reschedule for a $200 change fee for each person!

Posted by claerwen7 Aug 21st 2008

the wait is so not worth it....the movie is going to suck...

Posted by tubaturtle Aug 21st 2008

He isn't sorry to disappoint us. I don't know why he's saying this. I, for one, would rather hear the truth in his decision. But we're never gonna get that because when he sees the fans, he just sees dollar signs walking around.

Posted by kelei Aug 21st 2008

This idiot needs to stop making statements - he's just pissing off the fandom even more. Does he not get that we are prepared for a long wait till DH, but not for HBP. I'm still boycotting WB but i won't boycott HPHBP - i can't do that to the cast and crew. It's not their fault that the WB are selfish.

Posted by pota777 Aug 21st 2008

this assholes such a freakin joke. you know he's only doing it for the money. what a douche bag.
