Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay
Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay Alan Horn, President of Warner Brothers, has issued a statement in response to the large amount of disappointment from their decision to delay Half-Blood Prince until July 17th, 2009:

Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability. The decision to move “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support. If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between “Half-Blood Prince” and the much-anticipated first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which opens in November 2010. So although we have to wait a little longer for “Half-Blood Prince,” the wait from that film until “Deathly Hallows” will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.

Many of the Harry Potter movies have had two years in between one and the other, I guess I am upset to have to wait more, after thinking I could go watch it in November, but I am definitely not Boycotting the premier. I know they weren't sniggering and saying "Lets psst of these stupid fans" they probably just want to make the most of what's left of the series, after all they are a buisness, we can't blame them for that. As for me, I guess I'll just do everything else in my life that I have left besides Harry Potter. School, Work, Friends, maybe I'll finish reading "ELDEST" "AMERICAN GODS" by Neil Gaiman and every other book I bought during my book buying frenzy in June.

hermie1958.. good point.. it would not have been such a big deal if they changed the date before they released the dates/trailer. I think that in the end they will regret making the change. But thats just me

Posted by Holistic_Dirk_Gently Aug 19th 2008

I think people boycotting the film is absolutely stupid... I can understand being upset but c'mon. They're a freaking business, they're not going to cater to every wish of the fans if they see an opportunity to make more money. Yeah, they're in it for the MONEY. Shocker. There probably are some people on this film who are definitely in it more for a love of HP, but WB won't give a sh!te about a pushback. Boycotting won't do anything, either. It'll just psst off more people.

Posted by Babowika Aug 19th 2008

FIRE ALAN HORN! BOYCOTT OPENING WEEKEND!!! He talks down to us like we're stupid, little kids that can be pacified. Let's see how pacified he'll be when no one shows up to his film on its new release date!!

Posted by the_shrieking_snack Aug 19th 2008

slimy. very slimy

Posted by festy1986 Aug 19th 2008

Mattrixed I dont think anyone thinks that, maybe it looks like that by the way were acting, but this movie wouldnt even be made if you take away the Potter fans, so yes, the movie IS ours and telling us that were getting it in NOvember and then changing there mind is like breaking a contract.

Posted by Holistic_Dirk_Gently Aug 19th 2008

Oh, and one more thing: don't you guys think boycotting is incredibly unfair to the people actually working on the darn film? These people have been working for months to give you guys a great movie and just because you're all too effing whiny about having to wait another GASP! 8 months, you're all screwing them over. Good job, everyone. Boy, some people on here need to just learn to suck it up...

Posted by chellabella Aug 19th 2008

LIAR!

Posted by Wizardofmath Aug 19th 2008

They are a business. I mean, I don't like that we have to wait, but I have overcome my hard feelings. We have another year to wait, but what he said is actually a silver lining... We won't have to wait as long for the first part of DH.... which is good. I mean, I was really mad too, but I think it's only because they released a trailer and everything and then pulled it out from under us... It wasn't a bad decision....just bad timing....really bad timing. I am glad he responded to us. It shows they aren't heartless. I'm satisfied.

Posted by kleigh629 Aug 19th 2008

Great, we get the movie pushed back nearly a year so that HBP and DH will be released closer together. How do we know that Horn and WB won't decide to push the 1st half of Deathly Hallows back to the summer of 2011 as well??? After all the 1st half of DH is due out in November, too?! Won't that screw up their summer revenues?? I'm sorry I believe little of what the man says and I know full well that corporate greed is at the root of this. As it's been said, they don't care about the fans and what they want, they care about our money... Save your breath Horn, you aren't convincing me this was for the best.

Posted by festy1986 Aug 19th 2008

Who cares who worked on it man, they should complain to their employer and not us for these kind of decisions. I wouldnt boycot the movie and I dont suggest that for anyone to do, but I would say only see it ONCE cause if the movie loses its repeat viewings it's losing millions, in reality you shouldnt see a movie more then once, but sometimes there so good and sometimes there close you your heart you just do, but if we all went and saw it once, then WB would have a lesson learned.

Posted by morganleedavis Aug 19th 2008

Total narishkeit! Keep sending howlers. I don't think Mr. Horn has even begun to realize how upset we are. Silver lining? Puh-lease! Like everyone's said, you don't even do the books justice.

Posted by chommy Aug 19th 2008

I half agree with the boycott people and I half agree with the others. I understand why WB did this but I want to annoy them as much as I can to show them that we care and that we're hurt.

Posted by AnnaSmee Aug 19th 2008

Someone please shoot him in the face, before I do it.

Posted by Hpfanaticgrl Aug 19th 2008

Hey, back off of the guy. It totally sucks that we're not getting it in november, but I'm confident that they moved it for a good reason, regardless of money. Plus, he seems like a pretty good guy.

Posted by chellabella Aug 19th 2008

And newsflash to anyone that thinks otherwise, capatilism IS greed. Everything is to make the biggest profit possible, to squeeze every last penny out of a franchise and to sit back in their chairs, rubbing their hands together and feel proud of themselves that they've successfully screwed us over, YET AGAIN.

Posted by AnnaSmee Aug 19th 2008

Hpfanaticgrl: Alan Horn is the spawn of Satan. He is not nice. He likes eating puppies for breakfast. This is all I can say without having the censors fill my post with stars.

Posted by ipreferharry Aug 19th 2008

i think this is total bs!!!

Posted by winddom Aug 19th 2008

Hmpfh! He just reiterated what he said days ago! Nothing new! Shame on you WB! I hope you get what you deserve!

Posted by SproutMdme Aug 19th 2008

Horn is like every other CEO, he only speaks in corporate-speak...he doesn't understand layman's terms, like 'This is Bullsh-t!' If it doesn't involve profit margins and spreadsheets, it's not valid. They're all Ferengi...they live by The Rules of Acquisition alone. Well, I say impact their profit margin, and they will listen.

Posted by kleigh629 Aug 19th 2008

The movie had BETTER BE worth this long wait! If Horn thinks we are mad now, he hasn't seen ANYTHING yet if the movie turns out to be garbage...

Posted by LadyDiana79 Aug 19th 2008

I've got three words for your Mr. Alan Horn. GO SCREW YOURSELF!

Posted by karenf Aug 19th 2008

That is total BS. Oh god! I am so excited that I have to wait over two years now instead of two years later. Thank you Alan and WB. You guys are PR geniuses. Oh, wait. You actually suck at PR. I was being sarcastic.

Posted by iluvron Aug 19th 2008

ok well listen i am not boycotting idc how many ppl hate me 4 this but they had to do wat they had to do and there is nothing we can do about it i am not going to throw away my great love for these movies just because it got pushed back no thats not how i do things and i am a fan of hp any real fan who actually liked hp would watch the movie regardless of its release date...fine if ur not real fans...i was really pissed at first to but then i relized that my fandom was more dominate than my anger towards wb im sry if its not the same 4 others

Posted by Jaimieanne Aug 19th 2008

Well, thank you Captain Obvious for pointing out that there will be less time between 6 and 7. It's not the amount of time we have to wait that bothers me, it was how close we were to getting the movie.

Posted by stephaniennn Aug 19th 2008

I love that he used the phrase "A Little Bit Longer." He secretly loves the Jonas Brothers. AND HE ALSO SECRETLY WANTS TO TORTURE US!!!!!! My theory? It's all David Yates's fault. If we had just gone back to Chris Columbus, like I'd asked.....

Posted by AnnaSmee Aug 19th 2008

And I agree with Festy. MN, Leaky, and every other Potter sites are being cowards. They get to go on sets, see behind the scene stuff because they're with WB. If they actually posted, "Um, hey, boycott opening weekend," we might actually have WB lose some money. But no. MN is just sitting on the sidelines, waiting till their next paycheck...

Posted by Knight Aug 19th 2008

Honestly, I don't really care. I mean, at first I was very upset, but after just thinking about it, it's not that bad. The movies are never as good as the books. Just reread the book again. It's the SAME story, remember. Americans have gotten so darn lazy...must everything be dumbed down into a movie for us to fully appreciate it? I find that my own mind creates the best movie. You guys should try it sometime...let the words come to life. A movie is just one person's interpretation of the most important ideas in the book. Certainly nothing to get so upset about.

Posted by festy1986 Aug 19th 2008

They wouldnt do anything that could shut their site down, and definitley wont do anything that will screw them from set visits that they get because of the hits we send there way on there sites. If they were more pro active with this, they would lose any sources they have with WB and be blacklisted, but thats a no no for them, too much money to lose. I dont blame them really, but its still wrong.

Posted by raverclaw Aug 19th 2008

Agreed, Jaimleanne. The thing that I'm most pissed about is that they had everything set up for a Nov. 21 release (trailers, international release dates, etc.), and everyone was looking forward to it for a LONG TIME, we were 98 days away, and then suddenly WB pulls the carpet from under our collective feet. They've taken advantage of the HP community because they know that we will pay to see it whenever. They can't just screw us over like that! Jerks.

Posted by goldfish Aug 19th 2008

Hm. Well, I think it was nice that he took the time to at least respond to the outrage the fans are feeling. He easily could have just ignored us, or let some random PR person deal with us. That makes him seem more sincere. I don't think he's a Voldemort, he's not even an Umbridge or a Death Eater. He's more like... Fudge. Having said that, however... still don't feel any better about the new release date. And I'm still not sure if I'll feel excited enough to see it come July. I was so revved up for November, and the only way for me to deal with the sudden letdown without feeling really angry or sad was to just let go of all the anticipation and excitement I'd let build. So it's all gone now. And I'm not too interested in trying to get it back, for fear WB'll do something next year to mess with it again.

Posted by abraham_the_great Aug 19th 2008

We all should have seen this coming. The numbers with the dollar sign in front of them is what this business is all about. I don't care if HBP came out in the summer, the winter, fall, or spring. It would still probably top 290 million. To postpone the movie for 11 months so that WB can make a few millions more is a slap in the face to anyone who's ever called themselves a Harry Potter fan. I know how low the movie business is. I thought the men behind HP would be different, though, because of the amazing fanbase. So much for loyalty.=/

Posted by pure_blood_princess Aug 19th 2008

I say we all go to the opening weekend of Twilight and then send WB all our ticket stubs to prove that HBP would have been just fine (awsome in fact) coming out in Nov.

Posted by rivendellroseOSU Aug 19th 2008

Many of you keep pointing out that WB is doing nothing wrong, and it just makes good business sense. Why, then, did they insist on giving us a release date before OotP was even finished filming? If they had waited a little longer to do that, they could have considered more, and then possibly been more ACCURATE so no one would have been as angry. As it stands, the statement made by the president of the company is nothing but politics. While I agree some people are TOO upset about this, it changes nothing about the fact that what Horn said is bullshit. He's a politician, nothing more, working to make people think he's a good guy and his people are doing the right thing, even if that's not the truth. Also, some of you are pointing out that they're not doing it because of greed, they're doing it for money....think about it. That's what greed IS. Doing something for your own personal gain, specifically when it hurts others.

Posted by the_shrieking_snack Aug 19th 2008

Whoever first had the idiotic idea to move the release date up deserves to shot, cloned, and all his/her clones shot dead as well. /end of story.

Posted by kelseykayrowan Aug 19th 2008

What a bunch of crap! I mean seriously! WB would make money ANY time of the year that HBP would be out!!!!!!!!!! Jerks!

Posted by Babowika Aug 19th 2008

If we don't boycott, WB will think they can do this to fans all the time, and they will do it again with both DH films. As for the comments about hurting the people who made the film, I disagree. I think the people who made the film are just as pissed off as we are. It's the corporate jerks who sit in their offices with calculators and dollar signs in their eyes that made this decision, not the artistic people who actually put their hearts into the film. Alan Horn didn't make the movie. He doesn't care about the movie. He cares about the yacht he wants to buy with the extra profits he'll make next summer. You know, a yacht to go with the summer McMansion he bought this summer from the Dark Knight profits.

Posted by llerick Aug 19th 2008

Please pass on our complete belief that they are full of it and we are not buying the hype. There is no way to do this but to continue to tell them we object by boycotting every movie from now until they put our movie in the theaters. Yes we all know that the movies are not the books, but as a lover of both independant of each other I want my movie. BOYCOT BOYCOT BOYCOT BOYCOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by landon91 Aug 19th 2008

Dec. 2010 my ass, they will just move that one too. More howlers I say!

Posted by snoopygonewilder Aug 19th 2008

I can't believe people are being so childish about this whole thing. Okay yeah the guy is in it for the money, if he wasn't, THERE WOULDN'T BE ANY HARRY POTTER MOVIES TO WATCH. if it wasn't a buisness, we would only be watching Indie films, which I do like, but that's besides the point. Just wait patiently like an adult. If you can write, you're old enough to be patient. You know your not going to Boycott anything. Spewing anger and threats is not nice. The guy's not EVIL, NOT THE DEVIL OR AN A-HOLE, he's a business man., its what they do THEY MAKE MONEY for a living. Before anyone says anything, yes I'm a fan, yes im upset about having to wait more, but I don't go around writing threats and offending people I don't know for doing their job, I go on with my life. And to prove my point, this is the last time I write anything about this topic.

Posted by tor Aug 19th 2008

What really gets me is its so OBVIOUS that they just want more money. Post-production is done! (Or doesn't neet THIS much time). Then they pull the Imax card. "Oh, well we can put it in more Imax theaters, so go, be happy" NO, WB!!!

Posted by JKR_is_my_hero Aug 19th 2008

BS! LETS WATCH ALL WB MOVIES ON THE INTERNET 4 FREE. DONT GIVE THEM A PENNY!

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

Dude you people who are like "It's just another 8 months" ARE NOT GETTING THE POINT! wtf! seriously. Do you want me to speak in French, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, or something to get it into your heads about why people are upset? Do you honestly have no morals that were violated towards this sort of "business decision" ..???? honestly people. IT'S NOT THE WAIT FOR THE 847604360376893TH TIME!! Maybe you should actually read the comments and you'll understand where we're coming from. NO I'm not boycotting the HBP film entirely (I'm seeing it once, not multiple times like I would have if it was released in november). But do you understand that they're decision is the most moronic decision I have ever witnessed from a production company? It doesn't matter when HP is released... it'll smash the box offices with a high profit. They wouldn't be making more money in the summer versus the fall or the winter. Instead, they want to psst off fans by using HP to MAYBE get like what... 2 million more dollars? out of 300 mil?! that's like asking for 50 cents more when you've just made 100 bucks. IT'S NO DIFFERENCE. And they aren't even sure if they'd make more money or not! They're greedy and stupid and I don't want them taking my hard earned money. I WILL see HBP in the theatres and if I see it more than once, the second time I'm going to buy a ticket for another film and sneak in. Simple. I get my cake and eat it too. They don't get my money, I get to see the movie. Another thing for you people who are like "boohoo to WB!! they work so hard to give us a movie blah blah blahhhh" ummmm... HELLO?! do you not know that they have BILLIONS of dollars? wtf, they don't NEED every cent they can get. Before you argue our emotions about this, actually read our arguments and look at it morally and logically? k thanks.

Posted by lila10 Aug 19th 2008

i don't care what any of the a**es are saying about "suck it up" im still pissed. and yeah right like they care about us? if they did they would release the movie when they already said they were going to. They don't give a f*ck about their fans they give a big one about thier money though. it seriously think that it would still make almost just as much. everyone's been waiting for this just like every other movie til novemer is long enough for me. its just flipping insane. the wb can kiss something of mine.
