Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay
Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay Alan Horn, President of Warner Brothers, has issued a statement in response to the large amount of disappointment from their decision to delay Half-Blood Prince until July 17th, 2009:

Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability. The decision to move “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support. If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between “Half-Blood Prince” and the much-anticipated first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which opens in November 2010. So although we have to wait a little longer for “Half-Blood Prince,” the wait from that film until “Deathly Hallows” will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.

They feel bad because we are upset. They do NOT feel bad that they made the decision, and I don't blame them. You guys, don't let this ruin the movie for you! It's hard to wait for the movie because we like it SO much, but that is exactly the reason we need to get over our anger and wait it out. I like how Mr. Horn put it, it WILL be worth the wait!

Posted by winddom Aug 19th 2008

Whatever, Alan Horn. This rescheduling just ruined my mood to the movie, moving on from HP movies. Still love the books though and the anticipating Beedle the Bard this December!

what a load of crap

Posted by hpintwense06 Aug 19th 2008

Ehh that really doesn't make me feel better (I'm talking about the gap between the 6th & 7th movies). I would rather have it the day we were supposed to get it. I do think it was good of him to put out another statement, but that statement just didn't make any of us feel better. Blah.

Posted by nothedwig432 Aug 19th 2008

What bothers me most about the decision WB made is that it doesn't seem necessary. At all. I mean, I'd understand if WB were to make the decision because they weren't able to complete filming on time. I'd be sad, but I wouldn't blame them. I'd also understand if their entire corporation depended on the extra sales they'd make in the summer. Clearly it doesn't though, and that's the point. True, they were hurt by the writers' strike, but they also benefited greatly from The Dark Knight. And if I remember right, one of the main reasons WB had for delaying HBP is that they didn't need the extra profits HBP would bring them that year. They're actually doing BETTER financially than they thought they would, so clearly they don't need the extra cash. They just want it. Now, some people argue that WB IS a business, so it SHOULD be all about money for them. They feel it's perfectly natural for them to do what's best for their profits, even if what's best for their profits isn't what's best for their fans. But when did businesses decide that it's OKAY to break their promises to customers, when that promise had been out there for a very long time? When did businesses decide that it's OKAY to shock millions of people at the last minute in favor of a more profitable season? I say it's time that people realized that businesses need to care about more than just their revenue and reputation; they also need to care about about their fans and how their actions affect them.

i agree with snoopygonewilder, no offense but its not the end of the world, nor should we all kill alan horn 5 thousand times, and just for the record i too was upset and mad at wb but that doesnt mean i wanna strangle them however if u guys wanna boycott, u go do that but i gurantee they wont do anything, think about it: if they didnt care in the first place why should they care now?? ok yea its all about money, but come on im not gonna wait even more for the movie by not seeing it, im just gonna read some new books coming out such as Brisingr, and watch some good korean dramas so u can cry if u like for the rest of the 2 years, but ima be cryin for a different reason; in front of a good korean drama

Posted by ravensbite23 Aug 19th 2008

In all honesty, I wouldn't have cared about the gap...because we'd have just gotten HBP in theaters, waited a while, and then could've kept ourselves busy with the DVD. We've waited longer. Boycott the opening weekend, imo.

Posted by sevviesnapples Aug 19th 2008

@ginmo// yesyesyes. and @Wizardofmath i'm not going to let this ruin the 'movie experience,' i'm going to enjoy the hell out of this movie, but maybe not in opening week. i can wait one more just to contribute to the other people that it is not a good decision to destroy the people that hold the wallet. i'm really p!ssed and upset and i can wait but it is just so aggravating that they're trying to suck-up and smooth talk us. i won't take this crap. it's outrageous.

Posted by _Kettleburn_ Aug 19th 2008

I still hate WB.

Posted by the_shrieking_snack Aug 19th 2008

i think that Mr. Horn should use his extra cash he thinks he's gonna get to invest in a goodly bulletproof vest. yeaaaaahhhh.

Posted by Mattrixed Aug 19th 2008

Re: "they don't NEED every cent they can get." You need to learn what capitalism is. MAXIMIZING PROFITS. WB will do whatever they want if they think it's in the best interests of their company. And moving a release date and pissing off a couple hundred thirteen year olds wont cut into their profit (or else they wouldn't have made this decision). WB obviously has a good reason for moving the date, they probably had teams of accountants and actuaries pour over the numbers to predict what release would result in profit maximization. Morality has no place in this argument. This is a business decision, the end. WB has NO OBLIGATIONS, NO CONTRACT to any fans about when or how this movie should be released. And to the person who earlier said "it's like a contract"...no it isn't. It's NOT a contract, and the fact that there is NO CONTRACT means that you don't have a right to diddly squat. Does it psst you off? TOO BAD. This is how the world works. If you don't like it, move to North Korea.

Dear Mr. Horn sir, The more astute observers among us are quick to notice that your money flagship THE DARK KNIGHT has lost some box office presence after your untimely HBP delay announcement. Could this, along with the brash correspondence of passionate fans Harry Potter worldwide, have prompted your little tail-between-the-legs follow up apology? I'm afraid you and your colleagues are going to have to endure the barrage of negative letters and lost WB revenues for the NEXT 11 MONTHS. Get cozy, contrary to your stated belief it really IS a long time. The "silver lining" is that you also now have 11 months of thinking how NOT to screw up DEATHLY HALLOWS, and maybe in those 11 months you can start improving the quality of your Saturday morning cartoons (which are now so abysmally bad my own 9-year-old has no patience for them). Or you and yours can use those 11 months to work on your resumes...

Posted by Mattrixed Aug 19th 2008

To surferrosmerta: Do you really think the HBP delay announcement had anything to do with The Dark Knight moving from first to second in the box office (in its fifth week, no less)? Get real.

Posted by ravensbite23 Aug 19th 2008

Another thing: it may be worth the wait, but not a whole years' [give or take]. My opinion of the movie, what everyone's said and the teaser trailer, dropped monumentally when they said Harry was going to be flirting with a waitress. What the heck..

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

ok first of all Mattrixed, it's not just "13 year old girls." I'm 20 fyi. And I can tell by the language some of these people are using are much older as well. Ok, that was irrelevant lol. But still. ANYWAY, second of all, they're stupid because they aren't doing the right captialistic move, as you say, because the fans are the people who employ them. And I'm sorry but "a couple of hundred" thirteen year olds means A LOT of money, especially if they were going to see it multiple times. I can assure you that it's WAY more than just a couple of hundred people. More like several thousands. And with ticket prices, several thousands of people = several million. The lost the several more million they would have gotten in November or Decemember. I'm not stupid. I know how capitallism works.

Posted by sevviesnapples Aug 19th 2008

ravensbite23: haha really. since when did harry do something as outgoing as that? lol harry will always play it safe. yeah i really hope this movie will be as good as they say or i will be very unpleasant. (:

Posted by RebeccaMatthews Aug 19th 2008

I always thought a company wanted to make as much money as possible, and from what I can see the WB is loosing out on the perfect reason for parents to spend money on HP related products and kids asking for them. Do hope that they make some money next year on the merch to offset their lost revenue this time around for it.

Posted by merrymarge Aug 19th 2008

It's the timing of when they made the announcement. They waited until 3 months before the movie was to be released. Also, the fans' e-mails and howlers and petitions, is getting to WB. They don't like to hear from disgruntled fans. Fans should keep it up. WB might not change the date for HBP again, but they will think twice before changing the date of DH. I know it's a business decision, but it's still annoying. I don't plan on boycotting the movie. I might not make opening night, but I still want to see the movie. And have it on DVD.

Posted by nolovenoglory09 Aug 19th 2008

What a corperate [insert choice words of your choice]! I hope he gets fired from his job. At least the WB will loose tons of money. I strongly urge people to boycott the WB from now on. In addition, watch their movies for free online somewhere (we all know of places that have them). That way we get our fill of entertainment without filling their pocket books.

Posted by ron_lover_13 Aug 19th 2008

I think this is such crap, man! I can't believe that WB would try and make up for that with lies! I'm not gonna boycot or stuff like that but im so p.o ed

Posted by emilyecstasyTM Aug 19th 2008

Honestly, I do admit he makes a good point, mentioning the fact that if we see HBP this November there would be a long gap in between HBP & DH pt 1, but even so, it still doesn't make us any happier. It certainly doesn't make me any happier because they released sooo much stuff that got everyone so hyped up, like pictures & a TEASER TRAILER, then they're like "oh, no, we'll move it." they should've waited for a final decision on moving the date back before releasing so many pictures and the teaser trailer =[ and honestly, that did sort of make me feel better, soooo yeah....still disappointed, but not as much.

Posted by bellaxslytherin Aug 19th 2008

omg this is so dumb. you didn't so this so we wouldnt have to wait longer, ou did this for money. thta is no silver lining. we expected the long wait until deathly hallows. we have to wait the same amount of time for deathly hallows no matter when movie 6 is. that is such a dumb cover up for him to use.

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

emilyecstasyTM- yeah but he purposely failed to mention that it made a two year gap from OOTP to HBP...

Posted by Leojane Aug 19th 2008

Waiting..Endless waiting..I've always been waiting for HBP . The trailers, the pictures and the movie.. How long can they keep me waiting? Let's see it ..

Posted by WindInTheTrees Aug 19th 2008

Every person here is going to see the movie don't lie. Yes it really sucks they pushed the movie back but i rather get a better move in 11 months than a not as great one now. Yes it was mostly for money but they are in it for that.

Posted by Babowika Aug 19th 2008

If you study Contract Law, you will notice that in the United States a verbal contract IS a valid, lawful contract! Releasing a trailer with the date makes it official. According to business ethics, telling your clients you will do one thing and then take it back, it's wrong. This is bad business. Period.

Posted by megblack89 Aug 19th 2008

It still sucks big time. it was thrust upon us fans just as we were getting extremely hyped from the trailer & less than 100 days to go, a year is a very long time, especially for harry potter fans waiting for a movie when we have not got the books to anticipate anymore. We're crazy psycho obessive people, but surely WB realises thats what makes HP the unbelievable success it is today, so clearly we were 'not going to go quietly' when they did this to us.

Posted by wontongirl Aug 19th 2008

WE`RE NOT DISSAPOINTED, WE`RE OUTRAGED. I`m happy u guys found one reason to try and make this better, it`s good for dh wait but still doesn`t make this wait any shorter! AND I bet the second u heard u would make more money it was a done deal! U disgrace moviemakers!

Posted by MinervaFan88 Aug 19th 2008

I must say from all the comments I have read on this website and many more, that the negative backlash should be a HUGE hint to the WB that they might be commiting commercial suicide. Lets also not forget that they are alright up Sh*** Creek with their new movie the watchers because they screwed up again. I say we all need to unite, come up with one great idea to stick it to 'em and do it. HERE HERE for Harry Potter.

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

WindInTheTrees- they're not editing the film any better or anything. It's just going to sit there for a year. So what airs in July would have aired in November. I still think they'd do MUCH better if they released it in December.. they can't release it in november anymore because Twilight took it's spot.. because they're smart and took advantage of WBs dumb move.

Posted by megblack89 Aug 19th 2008

WindInTheTrees: And also - we're waiting 11 months.... FOR EXACTLY THE SAME MOVIE. Its complete! It has been for some time, they aren't spending the next year making it better, they're going to sit on it waiting for the cash mountain to arrive in July. That is exactly what is Pi$$ing everyone off.

Posted by harry_potterdude Aug 19th 2008

hmph, even if they didnt just do itt just because of the money, they still did it, AND THATS THE WORST THING EVER!!!!! I had my November 21 planned out perfectly....... and now I have to change the plans to make them accomodate a summer release =(

Posted by thewandmaker Aug 19th 2008

I think I am going to buy one share of WB, then go to the next stockholders meeting and raise hell. It is nothing more than greed. The film is in the can. It should be shown. Where is Ms JK Rowling in all this? Where is her moral compass? She is our only voice, now. She must speak for us. Until this film is put back on schedule, I am boycotting all Harry Potter purchases, and that includes three deluxe edtions of the Tales of the Beetle Bard. WB films are off limits. Mr. Horn can starve.

Posted by felixfelicis888 Aug 19th 2008

Mattrixed, don't you have something better to do than to sit around and dispute what everyone has to say? Is this guy your daddy and you need to support him? And I don't mean just this post. I've seen you give people problems just for the sake of it. As for Mr. Horn, I'm going to send 10 letters this time!

Posted by Milkdudds Aug 19th 2008

Ummm.....Hello! Don't give us that crap about waiting 2 years for DH. WE HAVE TO WAIT TWO YEARS FROM THE TIME THAT OOP WAS RELEASED! I would much rather wait two years for the DH film to come out as long as it comes out when they say it will!!!! They should just come out and say it: "Screw the fans, we want money!"

Posted by texas_hammer Aug 19th 2008

Guys, calm down. I think if they're postponing it this long, it's going to be one hell of a movie. And duh, of course it's for making money, but it's not ALL about making money. I honestly think that HBP has some MAJOR competition for the box-office against The Dark Knight. It was an amazing movie, with a ground-breaking last performance from one of the greatest actors ever (R.I.P. Heath Ledger) and frankly, I think this is a smart move from WB. I think this Horn guy really does care for the fans.

Posted by Rose37 Aug 19th 2008

I still don't believe in what the media has to say about the push back of the hp movie. BETWEEN THE LINES=MONEY!!!

Posted by coralys Aug 19th 2008

Lier, lier, lier... anyway. I dont goin to see any WB prodution. Including Harry Potter. I go to spend my time studying and not wasting my time with this. I am sure they are going to try to keep our attention. Just like the news about Daniel Radcliffe disorder. Oh my God, just in time, the actor has a disease. So evrybody shut up and wait for the movie to make WB and the others more richer that they are now. Jerks...

Posted by luvrup Aug 19th 2008

I'm tired of this old man giving us LAME EXCUSES!, I still dont buy any of them, I will say it one more time, I WILL NOT SEE THIS MOVIE IN THEATRES THE OPENNING WEEKEND!! so stop giving us stupid reasons as why YOU OLD MAN decided to change the release date.

Posted by Potter_Chick_86 Aug 19th 2008

**cough** Movie 3 **cough** Integrity **cough cough** My Ass **cough cough cough**

Posted by MonykaBlackMalfoy Aug 19th 2008

He says that the first part of Deathly Hallows goes out on november 2010, but whos to say they won't push it back for the same f***ing reasons I mean the realese date for that movie isn't even oficial thy can do the same s**t to us, I HATE WB!! I'm totally boicoting them.

Posted by rooon Aug 19th 2008

BS!!!! Now it will be a 2-year gap between order of the phoenix and half-blood-prince!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

Posted by beth_28 Aug 19th 2008

*sigh* what a bunch of crap. All he does is lie. He did not once mention money there. And although there would be a two year gap between HBP and DH if it was released in november, there is now a two year gap between OOTP and HBP! So what the hell is the difference. Please everyone, still boycott WB untill they change it back, and send as many letters as you can. All the complaints from us are working, they are starting to get worried, keep it up and we may be able to still change it back!! They have angred many harry potter fans, including myself, and we should not give up. They are greedy and we deserve our harry potter in november!!

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

texas_hammer- again, lol, they're not doing ANYTHING different to the movie to make it better. It would be one hell of a movie in november and one hell of a movie in july. And something else to you people who are telling people to stop complaining.. tell that to the people who already wasted money buying plane tickets to england and taking time off of and all for the premiere, k thanks.

Posted by texas_hammer Aug 19th 2008

Hey, at least you still get to go to England.

Posted by littlesweetpygmypuff Aug 19th 2008

yeaaah right... blablabla... and what's wth that? we're still ALL pissed off!!!!!

Posted by Milkdudds Aug 19th 2008

BTW, not everybody who is angry is a Communist. Honestly, I think it's a terrible business move to switch dates. So many people are going to see this movie that they would have most certainly had a surplus of money. Mattrixed, I love Capitalism, but this is just ridiculous. They can do what they want, but it's nothing but greed and a terrible business move. They're gonna lose money.

Posted by miami777 Aug 19th 2008

The frustrating thing is that they won't make more money. Harry Potter is not some small film where people are like, "Heck, it's summer and I have nothing else to do - let's go see it." People would see this movie no matter when it was. It just doesn't matter. Go back and look at the previous movies. Are they going to move Deathly Hallows to the summer as well since December supposedly will result in bad profits? Then maybe part two will be moved back a whole year? It is just plain dumb and some people on here are giving WB's CEO too much credit. Just because he is a CEO does not mean that every business decision he makes is right. Look around you - they make terrible mistakes every day that cost their company. Releasing the trailer and telling everyone 3 months before the release dat was just plain wrong. They knew exactly what next summer's lineup was going to be for a long time. They had plenty of time to tell us this and yet they didn't. I will be boycotting the opening weekend. You people mention that capitalism is about money (which it is), but it is also about the consumer getting to have their voice heard. If you don't support a company's decisions, you have a say in whether or not they stay in business. That is the other side of the coin.

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

I'm not going to england lol. I wish... but I read stories of people who couldn't get their money back because of the false advertising. Honestly, if I were them, I'd sue.

Posted by Mattrixed Aug 19th 2008

Babowika said: "If you study Contract Law, you will notice that in the United States a verbal contract IS a valid, lawful contract! Releasing a trailer with the date makes it official. I admittedly don't know anything about contract law, but I'm pretty sure that WB never made any verbal contract with any fan. Either way, I'm sure that announcing release dates is always done tentatively as to avoid any potential contract breach. Also, we are not WB's clients. We buy their product, and until we pay for it, we have no rights as clients. Have you payed for HBP yet?
