Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay
Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay Alan Horn, President of Warner Brothers, has issued a statement in response to the large amount of disappointment from their decision to delay Half-Blood Prince until July 17th, 2009:

Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability. The decision to move “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support. If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between “Half-Blood Prince” and the much-anticipated first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which opens in November 2010. So although we have to wait a little longer for “Half-Blood Prince,” the wait from that film until “Deathly Hallows” will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.

My issue with this decision, like many others, is primarily the timing of it. This is a decision that should have been just as easy to make in January, February at the latest. They could have looked at next summer at that point and seen the effect the writer's strike would have on potential profits. They could have predicted that Dark Knight would make more money than ever expected due to the untimely and unfortunate death of Heath Ledger. I could have seen all this coming and made this decision eight months ago, and I know absolutely nothing about business. While the fans would have been upset back in January, it would not have had the extreme reaction they are getting now. We've seen pushbacks before, and none of them have brought on this sort of reaction. Besides, even if things hadn't turned out the way they predicted they would, all they would have to do is slide it back into this year and totally thrill the fans.

ginmo i agree, and feel for you if you're one who made such huge plans. that would be even more devastating than it already is. So yeah people who think we're getting a better movie, forget it, its the same one we'd have got in December/November. It would be nice if they spend more time on it, at least we'd know it might actually impress us for once.

Posted by luvrup Aug 19th 2008

and another thing, DON'T GIVE UP!! WE CAN DO THIS, I'M NOT SAYING THEY WILL CHANGE THE RELEASE DATE BACK TO NOVEMBER, BUT AT LEAST WE CAN SHOW THEM A LESSON, besides think about it, if this OLD MAN made a new STATEMENT with all the emails of dissapoitment that means he is SCARED, that is why he decide to make a new stament, WE ARE DOING SOMETHING GOOD!! LET'S ALL KEEP UNITED NO MATTER WHAT!! WE CAN DO IT, IF ONE PERSON CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE, THEN WE NEED TO TRY.

This is crazy. Large incorporatoins should not be able to abuse their power so much. Honesty, the whole concept for the HP movies wasn't even invented by WB. JK Rowling created the series and WB expanded on that. What WB has done is meerely taken on a "factory job" and filled in the gaps to make a book to movie adaptation. Choice of release date should not even sit with the WB enterprise in this instance. If WB creates their own movie from scratch, than thats fine but in regard to creating a movie from someone elses work, final rights should sit with the creator (based on advice).

It really bugged me how mugglecast just laughed at us fans for reacting the way we did to the delay-news. I'm almost happy that the episodes aren't going to be weekly now, it'll take some time before I regain my respect for them. I thought they would be more caring about this, at least Andrew seemed upset at first before everyone started going all "zomg. d13 1ns1d3?! u l0zer." on him. Laura annoyed me the most, how she thought everything we did was bs and how she laughed at us. I took that really personally cause even though I understand WB, it still feels like such a low blow for them to delay the movie so close to the premiere. Sure maybe what we do won't do any good, but it sure as hell shows were we stand. still love Andrew, Matt and Micah. the rest of the 8 people hosting the last episode, blah. they showed us no respect and I have no respect left for them.

Posted by hpangel Aug 19th 2008

Unless WB moves the release date to a date earlier than Summer 2009, then nothing they can say will make me feel better. NOTHING. They lied to us all this time and yeah, it makes me soooo mad.

This whole ordeal has tottaly ruined my life. This has completely upset me and is making me go insane. I love the harry potter books and have been a completely loyal fan. When i heard this news it made me so angry and sad. Everyday since it happened ive been loging on about 20 times a day to see if anything has changed. WB has made a horrible mistake, and though they think they are going to make more money they aren't. Dont they realise that this has angred so many fans, and that from the letters they are getting they going to make even less money from so many people boycotting them. If they had a brain at all or really "loved" they fans (like they claim they do) they will change it back. Everyone continue sending letters and e-mails or whatever it is that you can think of, whatever others are saying it will make a difference. All that we've done so far has already made them worried and it hasn't even been a week yet! Be a true fan and do what ever it takes to make them move it back to november!!

One thing he neglected to mention: A Reason.

THEY HAVE ALL BEEN RELEASED NOVEMBER ACEPT FOR HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHINOX I THINK IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE DIRECTOR...BUT THATS JUST ME PEACE OUT AND TO THE HARRY POTTER CAST I LOVE YOU Megan

Posted by pacifickay Aug 19th 2008

I'm still livid. I'm still convinced its all over money. I'm still boycotting all WB movies until HBP...but there's no way I could seriously boycott HBP itself. I don't have that in me. But I do have a question for Mr. Horn: So now that Watchmen may be delayed too, are you kicking yourself for delaying Half-Blood Prince???

Posted by HGrangerClone Aug 19th 2008

I'm sorry, but I don't see what the hell he said to make any difference. So he added some "please"s and some "thank you"s. He still said "We're screwing you out of your movie because we're a bunch of greedy pigs." KEEP WRITING IN! DUMBLEDORE'S ARMY!!!!!!

Posted by avadakedavratheWB Aug 19th 2008

Ginmo, Babowika, festy 1986, Anna Smee, lila 10, and sewiesnapples I agree with you all !!!! All of took the words right out of my mouth !!!! For the past week Ive started a facebook group, myspace page, and writen howlers and all that stuff. This is complete BS !!! I cant believe the WB and there money grubbing ass think we will take this !!! And I was listening to Mugglecast while I was eating my lunch and I almost spit out my pizza !!! They have to be in the WB 's pocket to not have been angry at ALLL!!! And the guys name with the british accent is failing me at the moment but his answers to how angry he was made me think he was Horn's lapdog. I think their p*****. lol And Mattrixed shut the F**k up !!!!

Posted by sbwilson2 Aug 19th 2008

i know they just want more money, but i thank him for his statement...however, the time gap between movie 5 and 6 is now the same difference between the two of them and although he didnt promise, they already said it would be november. i would have made the same move however, cuz i believe in capitalism and he has the right to make more money...in fact it is in his job description and unfortunately, that outweighs his duty to pleasing the fans and people.

Posted by hpfanatic112794 Aug 19th 2008

It is so funny how he never mentioned that they movied it for movie. What an idiot (as hermione would say.) I dont care if he says that he loves the fans and the franchise im still boycotting WB. But i still have to see the movie the day it comes out. It is a tradition.

Posted by thewandmaker Aug 19th 2008

Dear Micha, Jamie, Andrew and Eric: A couple of points missed on mugglenet podcast are: November release date will interfere with the merchandising of the dark knight toys for Christmas. Too distracting. Again more $$$$ for WB. Second, could it be that scripting for Deadly Hallows is not gong well. Further, that it would be too long a period between movies and fans might/will forget? Spacing the movies closer might bridge the time. Again, more $$ for WB.

Posted by chellabella Aug 19th 2008

avadakedavratheWB (btw, GREAT name) the british guy is Jamie, and I agree with the Matrixxed sentiment, but maybe in different words. What I will say is that maybe we should be a bit more respectful of other people's reactions to this terrible news. I've noticed that some people continue to bash and bash how others feel and honestly, why are you on a Harry Potter website bashing others when you don't care about this either way? Also for those of you who say we can't make a difference with the opposition, this message kind of proves exactly otherwise. He's noticed, and will continue to notice if we keep this up.

Posted by Mattrixed Aug 19th 2008

Telling me to STFU is rude. Learn manners.

Posted by randomchat Aug 19th 2008

The last movie SUCKED. I'm not seeing this one.

Posted by megblack89 Aug 19th 2008

mattrixed, this is a common ground for harry potter fans, and you, clearly, are NOT one of them. Leave mugglenet alone because we outnumber people like you a trillion times over. HP is a huge part of our life so when someone f's with that, there is hell to pay. Your laughing at someone who said this fiasco ruined their life, and yet your life involves sitting on here insulting people and rebutting what we say. stop.

Posted by wofe87 Aug 19th 2008

This isn't about the long wait for me between the two, the fact of the matter is they published in a trailer and many other places the movie would come out in November so don't change that! And Alan now says Deathly Hallows will be Novermber 2010 ok fine but don't go change that date now. This is about the fact they changed it after a decission.

Posted by Mattrixed Aug 19th 2008

This is hardly "my life." I'm just taking a few minutes out of my day here. This is just a movie release delay...not something that can ruin a life. This isn't killing anyone...it's not giving anyone cancer or destroying anyone's home. And yes, I am a HP fan, and have been for the past 10 years. The delay does make me a bit sad, because I was looking forward to the movie. But I'm not overreacting like some of the people here and calling for boycotts or assassinations.

Posted by beth_28 Aug 19th 2008

does anyone know an email adress to contact him with?

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

sbwilson2- yeah, it's capitalism, but what they don't understand is that the extra millions they would have made in november or even december, are now flushed down the drain because they pissed off sooo many people who will now only see their movie once instead of multiple times. Thousands and thousands of people only seeing it once = loss of millions of dollars. (since ticket prices are so high, they would equal millions) So therefore, they made a horrible business decision. And SofieMalfoy, I TOTALLY agree with you with the MN thing. They just made themselves look stuck-up and rude. Especially that one chick. Umm just a little hint of advice to you podcast people. It's not wise to make fun of the people who visit your website. That's almost as stupid as WB.

Posted by Ithilwen Aug 19th 2008

In a deranged, confusing way, I understand their reasoning, but I don't think that or the tiny bit of good that comes from the move helps. They ought to have left it on November 21

Posted by megblack89 Aug 19th 2008

its a figure of speech. hp brings joy to peoples lives. i've also been a fan like you for 10 years, so im sure we've both sought comfort fm the books when things like cancer, death and terrorism outside ARE ruining our lives. this movie change has affected us, nothing will change that. the end.

Posted by avadakedavratheWB Aug 19th 2008

THANKS !!! chellabella, Yea that was pretty harsh, I'll apologize to Mattrixed everyone is entitled to there opinion. ( I STILL THINK YOUR WRONG !!! LOL) And if I sound like a kid holding a grudge, I just turned 16 2 days ago.

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

Mattrixed- no but DID cost some people couple thousands of dollars...

Posted by cohen_Wrightington Aug 19th 2008

Not only should we boycott, the opening weekend. We should also limit to one or two trips to the theatre. Painful but maybe necessary.

Posted by Ithilwen Aug 19th 2008

Aargh..I hit a wrong button and it posted my comment before it even made sense. ANYWAYS. As I said before, despite the tiny slivers of good that will come from such a move, I think it a bad idea over all, especially as they hyped it up so much. I was EXTREMELY disappointed at the move. It was something I had been looking forward to during this winter, and they should have realized how angry and upset their fans would get. However, I do wonder at the sanity of those who want to boycott WB for this. As annoyed as I am by it, I do realize that in the grand scheme of things it's a very trivial problem, and not worth fussing about for long. I have no intention of boycotting WB or the movie. To me it's not worth the trouble. The WB execs will do what they wish, whether or not we fuss or complain. They still have plenty of buyers/customers/fans. So, to summarize...very disappointed, but I realize I'm going to survive it, and still have a full, happy life without HBP coming out in November.

Posted by harrypottertweak Aug 19th 2008

Oh Alan Horn, you ugly, selfish bastard. No matter what you say we won't believe you. We see that you're cracking. We can tell by all of the statements you're making. We'll win. The D.A will overrule you.

Posted by avadakedavratheWB Aug 19th 2008

Why doesn

Posted by benmanu Aug 19th 2008

what a bunch of kids all of you are. of course the delay was done because of money, whatever reason drives all of the firms in the world? .... he does not care about fans but he has the **** to speak to them. the delay is announced, you cannot do a thing about it, there is no need for insults against that guy. i'm a fan like all of you, and if the delay was a shock, nevertheless insults to him won't change the fact.

Posted by roonilfan Aug 19th 2008

Alan Horn ~ Ms. Roonilfan bids you good day sir, and to keep your abnormally large and greedy hand out of other people's pockets. ATROCITY!

Posted by lumos Aug 19th 2008

lovely.i love how they just lie straight to our faces. all they want is more money. money is all they ever want. they dont want to keep the fans happy. they dont truthfully care about us. all they want is what is best for them. whats the big deal with releasing the movie this November. ok well perhaps the other films being released around the same time will not generate as big of sales. but seriously this is millions of dollars maybe into the billions worth of money and yet they feel it is such a big loss. i wonder how those big pompous high up folks from WB would react if a good majority of HP fans truly boycotted WB. have fun with that Mr. Horn!

Posted by avadakedavratheWB Aug 19th 2008

Why doesn

Posted by chaibabachai Aug 19th 2008

I really don't think people are "overreacting." Given that the trailer just came out a couple of weeks ago, as did the list of release dates for all countries, it's pretty ridiculous that WB has decided to push the movie back as far as 8 months. Keep in mind that they apparently were seriously considering the move 3-4 weeks ago and the trailer came out just over 2 weeks ago. You would think that if they were considering making such a move that they would have held off on releasing the release date information. That's why people feel like they've been smacked in the face with this change and are rightfully angry about it.

Posted by i_eat_death_eaters Aug 19th 2008

BULL CRAP emails, calls, petitions, and facebook groups still seem like a phenomenal idea XOXOXO --I HATE WB 4 eternity hey i think that if there was a movie about WB it should be rich gold digging BS-ers

Posted by Lauren_Weasley Aug 19th 2008

I don't think he's sorry at all. Yea it's good we wont have to wait as long in between movies but think of how long we have been waiting for this one. And now he pushed it back. All a big-business ploy to get more money. Impersonally will be boycotting it's opening weekend for the simple reason that it is the only reason why they moved it. They want it to be another Batman... idiots :(

Posted by alc04001 Aug 19th 2008

Whatever..if you want to make it better...move it back to November 21st or at least this year!!!

Posted by BellaBlack7 Aug 19th 2008

This is bull. We were EXPECTING to have to wait two years between HBP and DH1. But they released tons of HBP media (and an awesome teaser), got us all excited, and then DROPPED THIS BOMB on us. They shouldn't have pushed the movie back this close to the release date. It's a major disappointment since we've all had HBP on the brain since the beginning of summer.

Posted by swishnflick104 Aug 19th 2008

What a load of crap. You know, stuff happens and things get delayed. I get that, and while I was disappointed to have to wait longer to see HBP, I wasn't half as annoyed as I was reading the response from WB. If they felt like patronizing the fans, why not do so when they made the announcement in an attempt to soften the blow? What kind of brilliant PR move was it to wait until people are already ticked, and then provide a lame and pointless excuse? Were they actually hoping to slide an 8-month delay under the radar of adoring, literate fans?

Posted by phelpsphan6 Aug 19th 2008

I highly doubt you are that sincere. Do you honestly think people saw Dark Knight b.c it was released in the summer? Hell no. So you are not going to make that much for HBP b.c it will be released in the summer. We all know this is your reason, if the movie is complete; why can't you release it this year? Go get a job you can actually handle doing, maybe like Mcdonald's or something.

Posted by hpninjaskills Aug 19th 2008

The only 'good' thing about this is the gap between movie six and seven? Yeah, because that's the only thing that they can say about this! Other than that, it's all about money! They just don't want to look like greedy b_stards! We already knew about the 2 year span between HBP & DH. It`s just the same situation. Overall - WE HAVE TO WAIT.

Posted by beth_28 Aug 19th 2008

http://www.warner bros.com/main/help/custom er_ser vice.html (delete spaces) go here onto the WB website and leave a comment on the new release date.

Posted by phia991 Aug 19th 2008

This is some BULL!! This does not demolish the fact that my birthday plans are RUINED!!! MY HOPES AND DREAMS HAVE GONE DOWN THE DRAIN!!! The drain. I really am thinking about boycotting the first week. If the whole potter community does it. I'm so down. So....LETS DO IT!!

Posted by FF_Voldemort Aug 19th 2008

im starting to get over it, im not gonna let some delay get in the way of my summer. i love the HP series movies and all, and if it really does remove that massive gap so be it, ill be fine with july 2009, id be happier with an earlier elese, but what are you going to do. hes read your letters, heard your complaints, lets mature abit. And im one of the people who was furious. im willing to move on. we wanted a moie, we're getting one. dont have a cow. lets grow up. we sound like 3 year olds.

Posted by avadakedavratheWB Aug 19th 2008

phia991 !!!!! I agree with you !!!! In the beginning, I really wasnt into the whole boycott thing, but after seeing how crushed people are including some of my closest friends. (One was even hoping to attend that royal premiere thing) So yeah, I'm in too.

Posted by ginmo Aug 19th 2008

FF_Voldemort- um no. We don't sound like three year olds. We sound like people who have actual logical reasons as to what they are saying complete crap and reasons to how they're decision is probably the worst business decision they can actually make. No. It's not a good decision, it's a bad one if you actually think about it instead of just falling for their little excuses. And if it was really that grand of an idea, the Twilight people would have taken the summer release instead of shooting like a bullet to the November one. (thousands of people only seeing it once instead of multiple times = millions of dollars lost that they would have been making in november... it's simple if you do the math. I said this in a previous comment) And yeah, they read our letters and our letters proved that it's starting to get to them. It wasn't getting to them, they wouldn't feel the need to keep coming up with BS statements to try and butter us up. SO, we gotta keep writing those angry letters just to annoy them more. Even if they're too stubborn to change the date to at least December, at least I would feel good that we actually TRIED to do something instead of just sitting back. You know, in a way we're actually trying to HELP WB... we're trying to get it in their heads so they can catch their mistake in time and fix it before it really does impact them badly.
