Alan Horn issues statement regarding HBP delay
Alan Horn, President of Warner Brothers, has issued a statement in response to the large amount of disappointment from their decision to delay Half-Blood Prince until July 17th, 2009:Many of you have written to me to express your disappointment in our moving “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” to Summer 2009. Please be assured that we share your love for Harry Potter and would certainly never do anything to hurt any of the films. Over the past 10 years, we have nurtured and protected each film, and the integrity of the books upon which they are based, to the best of our ability. The decision to move “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was not taken lightly, and was never intended to upset our Harry Potter fans. We know you have built this series into what it is, and we thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and support. If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between “Half-Blood Prince” and the much-anticipated first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which opens in November 2010. So although we have to wait a little longer for “Half-Blood Prince,” the wait from that film until “Deathly Hallows” will be less than 18 months. I am sorry to have disappointed you now, but if you hold on a little longer, I believe it will be worth the wait.

Emmerson should put his statement on the wall of shame!
haha I hate this guy, he is a greedy little git and he even try's to make himself look better about changing the release date with this hollow statement. "If I may offer a silver lining: there would have been a two-year gap between
Uhhh 3 year olds? I think that it's better for the HP fandom to voice their opinions rather than sit around and be complacent and take this crap. This decision was made WAY too late, and we have every right to be angry. We SHOULD make a stand against this greedy BS decision made by the WB execs.
They dont give a flying fart about us. Boycott the opening weekend and let it do way less than the average 85 million that Hp is accustomed opening to. If the opening week end shows revenues of less than 50 million it would be a victory for us coz it would be a heckuva lot lower than the 85.2 million that Azkaban opened to. We need to take a stance and protect the films because if we let them get away with us they will push back both DH movies for the same idiotic reason. Wait until 2nd week to go and see the movie. It will hurt them more than us if opening week end takes were low. And whats even sadder is that from what I have been discerning about the cuts and alterations from the movie that appeared online, this film would be just as rushed and choppy as OOTP was. Keep up the pressure guys lets show them the true power behind the name Potter. Long live Dumbledore's Army
O RLY? @_@ whatever.
Please, every one calm down. There has been more than enough time to cool your heads by now. It's a MOVIE. Is a movie really worth getting SO angry over. Ruined your life? Assassinations? Please. Go read, spend time with your friends, practice and instrument, call a loved one. Some things that really, you know, matter.
its singular B.S.!! he wants money thats all >=[ but i wont boycott it at all i love HP too much to do that but im still horribly pissed off!!
I'd like everyone to think about something for a second. What if this had been Batman fans they did this to. Made them wait nearly a year for the Dark Knight when it was so close !! Yup, all those thirty year old men, would start W.W. 3!!! This would never fly with anything else, I'm just angry they think this can fly without a true explination !!!
GTFO! It's all about the MONEY, honey. Who are you trying to fool?
I dont care what you people say about us over reacting and us needing to calm down. We have stuck with harry potter the whole time. Harry Potter is a part of our life. We read the books watch the movies and we have become very fond of it. We need to stick together and fight for Harry. No matter what others say we are making a difference, because if we weren't why would they have made a statement about our "disapointment" (translation: our outrage) about the new release date. They are getting nervous! Kepp sending letters, emails, and signing petitons. DA all the way!!
tonks_394- It being just a movie isn't the point. You may not do anything, but I'm a stubborn person and I, along with thousands of other people, don't want WB thinking that they've made a great decision after all once July comes around. I want them to be like "Crap..." because I also enjoy Karma.
We need to take a stand with Half Blood Prince because if they get away with this they would do the same thing with DH 1 as well. For those who see WB making a wise business decision in doing this consider this for a mo' Which studio would start an advertising campaign , launch the trailer and hype a movie up for fans only to do a 180 on them. Where is the logic in that?
ok Alan Horn frankly... I dont have any interest in what you have to say anymore, his excuses are weak and fake we dont get anymore than what we would have in november only they are benifiting this!!!! for money he needs to stop making rediculous excuses and just say we want more money and we dont care at all about the fans so intead of talking junk I'll just say the truth >.< hes only making it worse
http://www.warner bros.com/main/help/custom er_ service.html (delete spaces) leave your thoughts here with WB. Let them know how angry you are. Make them see how wrong they were. Stick with Harry and try to change it back! its been less than a week and they are already getting nervous. WE CAN DO IT! If not novmber, (becuase we probly wont get that anymore because of f'ing twilight) at least december or janurary!
OK Folks I'm pissed too but hey lets face it do we really want to miss HBP? NOOOOOO. So this is the solution. When HBP comes out in theaters next summer simply purchase a ticket a non warner bros picture and then go into HBP. This will throw off the domestic ticket sales like crazy if enough people do it. Besides we will effectively be giving our money to someone other than WB yet still get to see HBP!!!
WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!!! The truth of the matter is that WB is EXPLOITING Half Blood Prince because WB does not have a blockbuster for next summer other than Half Blood Prince; furthermore, they are happy with this fiscal year for the success of Dark Night, that's right!!! UNETHICAL SOBS!!!!!! It's all money!!! They do not respect the fans!!! BOYCOTT ALL WB PRODUCTS UNTIL SUMMER 2009!!!!!!! DON'T BUY A THING FROM WB!!! If money is the issue, well they will not get a penny from me!!!! And to all of you that say that the movie does not belong to us.. well IT DOES!!! I buy the movie, I pay for it, it is MY money that pays their bills!! Without us fans Harry Potter is NOTHING hear that? Go kiss WB butt if you like but I won't buy a thing from them until next summer!!!
Three words: Don't See Watchmen The WB is banking on this movie to bring in the green !!!! IF this could somehow flop because of us, the WB would forced to listen to us !!! And yes Beth_28!!! WE CAN DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, your all not thinking clearly. Think about it, even if their motivations are strictly money, the best thing to do is NOT intentionally psst off the fans. Perhaps they have to postpone the movie. I'm not angry in the least... just disappointed and boycotting is just stupid.
Oh No, we have another politicians running for President jest what we needed! Like politicians they never hold out on there prominence and weasel themselves out of everything! If your going to make an excuse for the postponement of the Harry potter movie at least make it a convening one not oh the writers strike delayed the movie until July. How come you didn't tell us there was going to be a delay in the production and push back the date during the writers strike then! Better excuse Needed here!
how idiots does he think we are exactly? He thinks we didn't notice that till he said it? well guess what, we did, it just didn't comfort us at all, you idiot prick
I hate my life...
I believe him in that nobody intended to upset the fans. Everything is about making money, that's just the way it is, so the decision to move the movie to next summer where is will do much better at the box office makes sense. Its not all about the fans. Thank you Alan Horn for a sincere response to our disappointment.
AndrewW- there's no way in hell they'd be making more money in the summer. That's why everyone is P.Oed. And his response is complete BS. God I can't believe there's people out there who are actually buying that crap. Just what WB wants...
EVERYONE LISTEN UP! If you haven't heard about it already, there is an ingenious campaign appearing called the Howler Campaign! Read about it here: http://hbpnojuly.blogspot .com/ I really think this will up! Letter writing has worked before, why not now? This whole thing is an outrage, I am disgusted with Warner Bros behavior and I too will be boycotting Warner Bros movies until Harry Potter is released. Alan Horn here is making pointless excuses, and to be honest they made me even more furious. All of this is simply greed. Even though they would have made just as much releasing it now as they would in the summer. But now, I'm not even doing to attend Opening Night. This is a disgrace. Join the Howler Campaign and make a difference! ~For Dumbledore's Army
psst off.
he's so full of crap...he couldn't care less about us...if he did he wouldn't have moved the movie in the first place...which was of course, as we all know, to make more money. I am still not going to WB movies...I'm still pissed!
ginmo- All I'm saying is WB did what they thought was best, they didn't intend to disappoint the fans. Most people are PO'd because they just don't want to wait. I don't like the change either, but everyone needs to get over it.
Most people are reacting emotionally, angry that they wont get to see their movie. That's understandable. Then from the other end I hear the voice of reason mostly in the shape of "Of course WB wants to make the most off the film so shut up about it! What do you expect?" What should we expect? That's the real question to me. Movies, of course, are big business but movies at their heart and soul are art and entertainment. To all the cool level headed folk out their telling the devoted fans to calm down, think for a minute what happens to an industry based on art that only cares about money. The quality of movies, in general is already on a downward trend and has been for some time. Now I see a public and unabashed decision from executives to can a FINISHED movie for 8 MONTHS based exclusively on money, when it KNOWS how heartbroken it's fanbase is going to be. That is a huge warning sign to me. The HP franchise has made billions of dollars for WB... BILLIONS! And where did that money come from? The pockets of devoted fans. What I see is fans loyal to thier favorite story. The storytellers then, (and yes, because if their industry, WB has the same resposibility as a storyteller since they, in essence control the distribution of the story) instead of seeing the fans' devotion as a sign that they should be equally devoted, see it instead as an assurance that they can't possibly kill the golden goose. Instead, "maybe if we beat the goose," thinks the WB, "we'll get more golden eggs." No... this is a bad bad sign people. And I HOPE it backfires on them. I hope that the movie gets leaked to the internet (which is very likely considering the length of time they're postponing), the boycott idea catches on big time and HP fans get a place in history as saving hollywood from it's own destruction by causing WB to make a fraction in July of what it would have made in November. If that happens then maybe we'll have a chance of seeing some decent film over the...
They're trying to the best of their abilities to do what now? Base it off JKR's vision? I don't know if its just me, but I do NOT remember JKR's vision having a skunk hair, Mcgonnagal looking Narccisa, or Harry flirting with waitresses. It included Moaning Myrtle, but definitely not "drug parallels".
Thats a load of BULL CRAP (for lack of a better term)
Alan, Alan, Alan... sort of pathetic how dim and limited his understanding of the harry potter fanbase is. You would think that he would, since he is making 7 figures running a billion dollar corporation familiarize himself the hundreds of millions of fans that financially fuel one of his studios major cash cows. But clearly that is not the case considering he went ahead and moved it back anyway. Did he think we would just be like, "Ah shucks... well, ok." I'm really proud to be an HP fan based on the outcry that's gone up. AND!!! ...it looks like we at least got his attention, huh? >;-) HP FANS DON'T LET UP!!!!!!!! CONTINUE WRITING. CONTINUE SIGNING and most of all KEEP TRUE TO YOUR WORD TO BOYCOTT!!!!!!! I was pissed before... but NOW... with this lame non-apology he issued??? Oh please! Just ridiculous. I find it offensive that he thinks we're so dumb and easily pacified. Are you all as insulted as I am... almost even more by this latest statement than moving it in the first place!!! Wow... just amazing.
Zil: great comments..
Just like I suspected, he had no idea what he was getting into when they delayed Half-Blood Prince. Apparently, now someone has told him that the fans are important, but still the desicion hasn't been changed. And why is he saying that "WE have to wait a little longer"??? THAT JERK HAS ALREADY SEEN THE FILM!!!
Thanks Till... :) It's just so... frustrating... especially reading the "get over it, it's a movie" comments on the abc and usatoday news sites. I mean, of COURSE it's just a movie... but I feel like it's bigger than that, you know? Seeing art and filmmaking and storytelling slain at the hands of corporate greed? It puts my wand in a knot. :) Stay the course everyone!!! Rare is the opportunity where we can actually make a difference!!! And with our numbers and outrage.......... I feel we actually CAN! Dumbledore's Army!

Art and filmmaking slain? It's only been delayed, not butchered. Stop overreacting (because that's exactly what you are doing, especially with your repeated calls to boycott).
What is every one pissed? Capitalism works folks. Haven't you got the memo? Its people like you that got JK Rowling, even though she won't admit it, to speed through the last book. I curse you for it.
We live in a society of slippery slopes. WB's decision to move the Harry Potter film back 8 months came out of a discussion that went something like, "If we move it back we can make more money in the new fiscal year." "You know, the fans are going to be upset." "It doesn't matter, they are still going to go and see it regardless of when we release it!" murmurs of agreement around the room. The point is, this decision to move the film back is evidence of a larger problem: That fans themselves don't matter... only their money does. In that sort of climate... how long before other areas of quality suffer... Art and Filmmaking slain? ...actually, yes. That is NOT an overreaction. That is what happens when a corporate groupthink such as a movie studio starts to make decisions based solely on the bottom line rather than loyalty to fans and what is best for THEM. This sort of thing is especially dangerous when the corporations product is art. They don't make toasters, people... they make art and art is what makes this world beautiful. What you call "overreacting" I call being able to see the big picture.
But what is the based on? Where you there in the meetings? or is this "fact" created by disappointment.
It bothers me that the WB are sending their goons to come to sites like these and post comments of how stupid we sound for protesting in what we believe in!....We'll send as MUCH e-mails,letters and make as much calls with our complaints as we want to WB!....because WE can!...It's good cause we like a challenge!.... "It is time for us all to stand and cheer for the doer, the achiever - the one who recognizes the challenge and does something about it"
You Sound like George Bush, Creating fiction to fuel your own agenda.
I'm sorry? Did you ask me if I was at the meeting? Did you really ask me that? ...seriously? Wow... Um, no... I wasn't invited to that particular meeting, mark. I must've missed the memo on that one also or I was doing lunch with Angie and Brad and couldn't make it. See my description of that meeting is one of those things thinking people do, you know, when looking at the problem from different angles; they use something called deductive reasoning to imagine what MIGHT have been said in such a meeting? Sorry if that that was too outside the box for you. I'll try to be more linear and literal from now on. (or I'll just ignore you) And as far as dissappointment goes... to be really honest, I didn't even know the movie was supposed to come out in November - seriously. I was a big fan of the books and I think the movies are a fun addendum to them. I only became interested in the situation when I read a news article on the first statement released by the studio and was amazed at how they simply, without any sort of qualms or compassion, said that they had a finished movie and were holding it back for 8 months in the hopes of making more money. It disgusted me. Am I disappointed? Yep! I saw the trailer and, sure I want to see the movie. But this is a question of integrity, in my opinion. Oh and capitalism DOES work, and one of it's cornerstones is "the customer is always right" ie MAKE THE CUSTOMER HAPPY! Looks like WB, in it's haste to grab the most profit, forgot one of the basic principles of consumerism. Ironic.
we are getting there!! i am sending about 15 howlers tomorrow and i have already sent about 10 emails!! Make are vocies heard we can do this!! Join the howler campaign please. WE can make a diffrence. -Dumbledore 's Army
lol while I agree that Mr Horn looks like a slimy businessman...I am now over this...I mean yeah it upset me at first...but then I thought about it and the chances of me seeing it in November were scarce anyways...I work in retail and October-December are EXTREMELY busy for me...I dont mind it being in July...I guess I have more patience than some of you on this board...no offense...as for the comment will they move Deathly Hallows now too...I will quote my mom...she always told me not to borrow trouble til trouble borrows you...lol cant believe I just sounded like my mom there...but anyways I have decided I will not boycott WB...or HBP...cant believe how seriously you guys are taking it...I mean its only a movie...its not life or death...and yes I am a HUGE fan of Harry Potter...I have every book and all 5 movies...I have seen the last 4 at the theatres several times and will see the next one several times...its sad that you guys dont share my love for Harry Potter...you say WB is hurting Harry Potter but the ones who are calling for a boycott of it will be what hurts Harry Potter not WB...sorry not trying to hurt anyones feelings but this topic got old to me last week...it happened MOVE ON PEOPLE!
we will not just move on. what they did was wrong!!
What bullshit. A little!?! A year is more than a little.
i hate that man...
there right!!! there is a silver lining! instead of waiting two years! we only have to wait a year and a half!!! omg!!!! we will now forget about the slap in the face you gave us and the greedy move you made because we have 6 months less to wait for deathly hallows! woooo!!-----fudge you alan horny for money---thank you spitting on us again
we are getting there!! i am sending about 15 howlers tomorrow and i have already sent about 10 emails!! Make are vocies heard we can do this!! Join the howler campaign please. WE can make a diffrence. -Dumbledore 's Army
Oh Zil, you are the best!!!!! This goes out to all you people who think we are over reacting..... It seems like these days companies are forgetting who pays their bills. By the way, it is the paying customer. It is not the stockholders, producers, etc. THE CUSTOMERS. It used to be that way. Companies seem to be forgetting that these days. I think that most of us would have been disappointed if they had told us that there were post-production problems, but not livid mad like we are. I COMPLETELY understand that they are a company and they need to think about the bottom line, however, when you come out and say that it is purely for profit, that is aggravating. Most HP fans do not come from lot's of money but we were planning on spending our hard earned money on movies, products, games and etc. It is not our problem that there was a writer's strike, maybe if they were paying their writers fairly, they wouldn't have had that problem. I have talked to many people about this situation that are not HP fans and most agree that what they have done is not right. One last thing, why must people be so rude and insulting about other people's opinions and feelings? Maybe for some people they have little happiness in their lives and this was something to look forward to. I respect your opinion, let us have ours. I will be boycotting WB and their affiliates.
