YAY! I feel like this is a victory for writers. As I wannabe writer I feel its important to know that people can't take our work and re-package it for a profit.
congrats to JKR. I wonder how long itll be before RDR makes an Appeal...
Try reading Orson Scott Card's take on one JKR. http://hatrack.com/os c/reviews/everything/2008 -04-20.shtml I realize this site is a JKR love in (a phrase from the 70's for all of you unfamiliar with that decade; Try wikipedia), but I happen to think she was in the wrong here. You can also bet the farm this will go on on appeals for a long time unless the two sides strike an agreement out of court. Also just a few more points. Ask yourselves what is so special about the MuggleNet site? Isn't it successful off JKR's hard work? I see ads on the site. Who is collecting the money? I may be wrong here, but hasn't the MuggleNet team also published books discussing the HP series? Why is everyone so worried about poor little JKR when others have done the same?
Correction: The last line on my comment above should read: Why is everyone so worried about poor little Steve Van der Ark when others have done the same?
Thank goodness! I only feel bad for Jo for all the time, worry and stress it caused her. If you think through it hard enough, there is a logical rule to follow: if the creater of a story says you can not use their story in that way at that time and place, do not continue. And most of all, don't go into a lawsuit. Yep, that sounds like sound advice to me.
Because, JayDeeEmm, "poor little Steve Van der Ark" isn't adding his own thoughts about the series, it's impact, it's connections to other literature, or speculation about points still under debate. It is an encyclopedia. According to news reports, when JKR/WB's lawyers asked for a copy of the manuscript, they said to look on the website, and the website is a compilation of JKR's own creative works. Though I'm inclined to think her motives are not simply money, it doesn't matter. Publishing that encyclopedia would violate copyright. I do feel bad for Steve as he seems to have had his heart set on this, and I respect him for putting in the work involved for both the book and the website, but publishing that material is still illegal.
YES! Is it just my ignorance, or did they take forever to reach a verdict? Are all trials like that? anyway, Yay!!! I knew she would win!
yay! Go JO!! It's about time this trial was finished!
wow. That was out of the blue...
This is a victory for authors everywhere, led by our revolutionary heroine, J.K. Rowling. The leader who inspired so many to read, inspired so many to write, revolutionized the art of literature as we know it, and fought to protect the rights of all authors. Well done JO! This calls for a Muggle net celebration! GO JO GO! Number One Fan; Harry Potter Prince
huh... was i the only one who thought this was already resolved? hmm... oh well... good for JKR!!!
go go jo! go go jo! go go jo! congrats jo!!!
I'm so happy! Good for you, Jo!
does this mean mugglecast soon??? :-D
YAYYYY Congrats, Jo, I am so happy you won. Good for you for standing up for your hard work and ideas!
Yay! I knew she would win! :)
Go JKRowling! rock on!
Mini MuggleCast? Pleaaaasse?
First of all Yay for Jo. Second, JayDeeEmm money made from advertisements on a website are legal particularly like the ones on mugglenet. If they make money it's not directly from using Jo's work. Harry Potter is what attracts people to the site. People see the adds and Mugglenet can make money from them. It's like a movie theater, people pay to see the show and the theatre gets money off of the popcorn and candy sales. TOTALLY legal. Another example is google ads: Did you know google pays people to have google ads on their website; so do a lot of other companies. I know because I make websites. And for the other books that Mugglenet made, a lot of it is on speculation of what will happen in the books referencing past material.
YAY for Jo!!! We all hoped for the best for her and I'm glad she came out on top!!
I know everyone else has address this, but the Mugglenet site is FREE for us. Advertising is completely legal, that's how many websites thrive. Second, MN's book was based on original theories. That's not illegal. And MN has irked WB a bit, but they complied. (MuggleCast T-shirts anyone?)
YES! I screamed that and glad that no one heard me!
:D I'm very happy for Jo and even WB!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally! Congrats to Jo! I knew/hoped this would be the outcome. Wooooooooooooot!
YAY! I would of killed someone if steve won
while I realize this was a publication, but what's next? tshirts designed originally but with her characters being pulled down? anything using her characters so closely that disclaimer or not, she will sue them too? I hope that this does not become a Fox-like internet hunt like down to the X-Files. Anything with anything remotely copywrited they shut down, and you had to be careful with your fanfiction sites.... lets hope it won't come to that
Congrats Jo!
Yayy! Go go go Jo-o, you know what they say ... Get it? Like that song?
Oh yeah yay whoopee she won a court case that she was stupid to even start in the first place. Yeah great victory -rolls eyes- now JK is going to think she can get away with whatever she wants... Great...
We love you, Jo!! Of course you have the right to protect your own work; you already allow us to do so many things like FanFiction. I would have been extremely upset had Jo not won this case.
To oscarsmom, on mugglecast and pottercast they talked about how Jo wining this court case would actually ~protect~ things like fanfic from having to be censored. I can't explain it here, just listen to the old episode for their reasoning.
Finally the obvious happens! i knew she would win and i love her that much more for it! Take that Van Der Fart! GO JO!
Yea!!!! *does a victory dance and frightens others sitting in a quiet library* I knew it would turn out in favor of JKR! There was no other way it could have gone! Still, it's a huge relief. Go Jo^__^
Yay for Jo. Took long enough.
wOOooOh! Jo wins at life
