Shyamalan Further Explains Directing a Potter Film
Last week, M. Night Shyamalan told ComingSoon.net that he has put some thought into directing either of the final two Potter films. Today, our friend Melissa from Leaky has informed us that she's conducted an interview with Shyamalan which will be released this Sunday on their Potter podcast, PotterCast.
In a preview posted on their site, the director states he would offer the "greatest protection" on the author's work. From the report:
"The themes that run through it...the empowering of children, a positive outlook...you name it, it falls in line with my beliefs," he said. "I enjoy the humor in it. When I read the first Harry Potter and was thinking about making it, I had a whole different vibe in my head of it. [There would be] a lot at stake emotionally. The teaching of magic would be desperately needed, there would be a lot riding on it."

Always good to have more info.... 1st?
that is so exciting. second/third?
I don't think he seems like such a bad choice.
thats cool...exciting
yes first page!
I think he would be brilliant on the sixth film.
Nooooo... I hope he doesn't direct anything HP related.
I agree I would love if he did the sixth film. It is my second favorite!
OMG He would be the absolute worst director for a HP movie... he's such an awful hack, he needs to give up, the only movie of his that was good was 6th Sense, everything else has sucked horribly
I would love him to direct the 6th film because I love his films especially Signs
eh.
What if the 6th film WAS one of his good ones like the 6th Sense?
Can Mr. Shlamalama-dingdong just leave the potter movies alone? Thanks.
I want Columbus and Newell to do the last 2 films! :]
NOT COLUMBUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that most of his work is pretty good (the sixth sense, signs, ext...) although I do have something to say against the village... Anyways, I don't think that he would be good for the Harry Potter movies. HP movies aren't just about being scary (although in later books, I'm sure some PARTS of them will be.) But I just think that he will not be good for this type of movie.
Well he doesn't sound like such a bad choice. I'm sure he has talent, and by the sound of it he wouldn't alter the storyline that much at all... I just like how they keep changing directors all the time, it makes the movies so much more unique from eachother.
I WANT COULUMBAS BACK!!! The first two films were my favorite bacause they gave the book justis! And the fourth was okay too. But I HATED the third!! It left EVERYTHING out!!!!
the only movie i've seen of his is signs..hmm i dont know! i like the other directors better i guess
no. no. no. hell no. no way. no. not going to happen. no. the potter films should not be directed by someone like him. no. i will not put up with it. no. no. no.
I don't think he would be good at directing any Harry Potter movies. I don't think the movies are going to be closer towards the genre horror.
When i really stop to think about it, he may not be the wisest choice... all of the movies he's directed previously have been pretty scary, at least to some extent. I'm afraid if he directs the HP movies, he'll focus too much on the scary parts, and might then leave out some important things... But, i must say, No matter what he did he would do better than the Third Movie..... that was so horrible... left out half the plot, and yet we got to watch like 15 min. of a leaf falling off of a tree... repeatedly... >.
Shyamalan directing Potter would be a brilliant idea. He certainly couldn't do a worse job than Columbus. Then again, just about any director would do better than Columbus. ;)
nice suite life reference, Rina. but seriously, i think he wouldnt do anything good for the potter films. how come pottercast gets to interview him?
he wrote all those popular movies he's done, he wouldn't write this.. i don't think i've ever seen a movie of his in which he only directed it. he has obviously put a lot of thought into it and has read the books in his own time. i'm sure he would do better than most.. WB also wants to make money don't forget, if shyamalan's name is on it, it's going to sell tickets
all of his movies have a certain religious twist to them. harry potter should be kept free of that. if you paid attention to this last statement, When I read the first Harry Potter and was thinking about making it, "I had a whole different vibe in my head of it. [There would be] a lot at stake emotionally. The teaching of magic would be desperately needed, there would be a lot riding on it." Umm....he is trying to insert more meaning into it than is necessary. the teaching of magic itself ISN'T so desperate. he is concentrating on the wrong need in the sixth book. which is why he is a TERRIBLE choice! I see him twisting the story into his own thriller idea...he will destroy harry potter as we know it and turn the movies into a joke.
HELL YEAH!!!! i think that it would be so awesome if he did. if you read the article before you ran to get first on comments. he said that he would respect what jo has written and keep to the book. as far as his movies go i think that they are great!!! they are scary but they have a twist to them. and that is what makes a movie fun. not saying that he would do that to the hp movies. i think that the movies were ruined when alfonzo stepped in and took over directing anyway. so he can't do worse than him.
Oh man. That's all that comes to mind.
as long as it doesn't say "M. Night Shyamalan Presents..." above the title (as all his other films have done), then i will be more than thrilled with him directing one of the final two movies.
Why don't you like the third and the fourth?! I love them! Sure, they really aren't very true to the books (the third one, like at all), but still, they were good movies! You just have to let the fact get in that the movies are only really based on the books. So of course the books are better, but the movies are great! GOF is honestly my favorite movie. Hands down. Sure they forgot a crap load, but it still gives me chills when I watch it. So back to the topis of Shamalan (how ever you spell it). He would be ok-ish. I've only seen the sixth sence, which was creepy. I don't want the humor taken out of the movies. That would be awful. If he can get aways from the whole non-stop creepy-ness, then whatever. Ha can have at it. He just better not do a crappy job. We've all got high expectations, and if he doesn't reach them...I won't even go into it.
im all for it! shyamalama-ding-dong is a great director and i think he is perfect for harry potter!
Dear Lord, no! I love Shyamalan movies, but I just don't think that he'll contribute a whole lot to the Harry Potter movies. I don't know how well he would integrate pieces of past movies from past directors into one that he would direct. He seems that he's better to direct his own movie, or own series--not start in the middle of one.
I think he might be able to do a great job. His visions are amazing. And I do think he'd stick to the book.
i wish he could have directed at least one hp movie... he'd b soooo good.. n he's actually read the books on his own !!!!!!
I think he's potentially a great director for one of the Harry Potter movies. I liked Chris Columbus for the first two; I don't know why everyone gives him such a hard time. He did a great job bringing those first two books to the screen, and if those movies aren't as good as the later ones, I think it's because the books themselves get better as they go on. While I like some of what Cuaron did, I hated the fact that he left out the backstory of the Maurauders, which could've been covered in just a few short minutes. Mike Newell was okay, but I don't think he did the end of the book/movie justice at all. Having said all that, I disagree that all of Shyamalan's movies are scary. Unbreakable wasn't, and even though it wasn't my favorite film, it shows he's capable of telling another kind of story. Signs is one of my favorite films because it creates such a great atmosphere, but if you've seen the film, you know that it also does a wonderful job creating humor and really establishing the characters and the relationships. I think Shyamalan be a great director for either of the last two books, because he would be as faithful as possible to Rowling's vision, and also because he really undertands how to tell a good story himself. For those of you worried about humor, he said himself that that was one of the things he enjoyed about the books.
I really wish that they had stuck to one perfect director for the HP movies
OMG!!!!!!!! I think he would be awesome for the one of the last two. Especially HBP!!! I love all of his movies. He has the perfect feel for it. And yes I like how hes read the books on hi own! He wouldn't put Shyamalan presents on top because he didn't write it. I hope he does! *crosses fingers*
This is off topic, but does Emma send an autographed pic w/ her letter?
Yes, she does. Perhaps Shyamalan could do the 7th movie. Since there's bound to be some sort of twist at the end, it would make a perfect Shyamalan movie.
Sense he wants to focus on classwork a lot i think that he would do well with the sixth because at least that has some of Hogwarts in it.
that should be interesting to read/hear....
I think it would be great if he directed one. I really like his stuff.
It sounded like he wanted to change the story. "The teaching of magic would be desperately needed, there would be a lot riding on it." I don't know. Last time I checked magic wasn't "desperately needed" in the wizarding world. Maybe he was talking about what he would have done for the first movie, not 6 or 7. That'd be kind of hard to change now. In fact, it would be hard to change in movie 1. The following movies would be nothing like the books. The idea sounds good though. Maybe he should write a AU fanfic...
HEY EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!! SCROLL DOWN TO THE VERY LAST POST THAT SAYS "EW's BOOK 7 DEATH PREDICTIONS" AND CLICK ON THE WORD "HERE", THEN ENLARGE THE ARTICLE BY CLICKING ON IT! IF YOU READ THE FIRST COUPLE PARAGRAGHS IT SAYS THE TITLE OF BOOK 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (its either Harry Potter and the Parseltoungue Troghy or Harry Potter and the Great Revelation!!!!!)
@xmxbx: Hey, thanks for that! Those might not be the titles, but it is good to know they might be! Also, this post proves it! Mr. Shyamalan will be PERFECT (in my opinion) to dierect an HP film! He has the drive and the vision and I think he is the man for the job!
xmxbx that is only a rumor and if you listen to MuggleCast you should know why so go listen to MuggleCast because it is better than Pottercast. and anyways back on topic Chris Columbus in my opinion was a great director because he stuck to the story line Cuaron was horrible because there was no backstory and the ending was kinda weird. newell made the best one yet and Shyamalan is a very good director and if you want to read my opinion just read remusfans post above I am too lazy to type all of it.
um. i dont want this guy directing my hp films pleasekaythanks. he will make it TO scary.. and i really dont want that.
well he seems to have the right idea at least but i'm getting tired of the HP directors trying to make the movie they direct "their own" it puts continuity at steak, but as long as he is respectful to the book i guess he could do a good job
lol thanks xmxbx for directing me to that article the sentence "the sun may have solved one of the biggest Harry Potter mysteries - the title of the final novel about the boy wizard" was enough to make me wet myself laughing!
Shyamalan would actually be a great choice. He's an amazing AMAZING director when it comes to portraying emotions (and he'd bring along James Newton Howard, who would also be a great choice as a composer.) Just watch Unbreakable. That's his one movie that isn't really scary. He works really well with James Newton Howard's scores, too. God, he'd be great for HBP. I think he'd be even better for #5, but beggars can't always be choosers.
