It's time for our annual Halloween-centric episode! This year, we're talking more about the ghosts of Hogwarts and and the Halloween-themes in the series. Ben "Larger than Life" Schoen also returns to the show and - well, the long time listeners of the show can guess who he wants to be for Halloween! Plus: - We talk about our upcoming show at Azktraz 2009. - Analyzing Episode 61: did we have anything right about ghosts pre-DH? - If you had to decide which house to be in based on the ghost, which would you chose? - Were there enough of the traditional Halloween characters in the series? - We discuss Snape's vampire-like qualities. - What if: JK Rowling were a man? It's a serious question. - Debate: The Potter series should be made mandatory reading in US public schools. To download for free, we recommend subscribing through Apple iTunes. NOTE: This episode was recorded a couple of weeks ago, so don't be alarmed when we note that news is very slow this week!

Cool. There is a syntax error though. It says chose instead of choose.

OMG! i totally agree! reading the HP series should totally be mandatory! well, AT LEAST the first book. I totally agree cuz i got hooked onto the HP series THROUGH my 6th grade teacher. you wouldnt believe how much i was like UGH! this is MANDATORY! why do we have to read this?! its just HER (teacher) idea! UGH!. I couldnt stand having to read it. especially cuz it was literally, no lie, the last 2 weeks of skool! of 6th grade! so anywayyz, i started reading it and the teacher was all slow about it! we only read 3 chapters in the a week! because of my sudden curiosity towards tha book, i kept reading and got up to the part about the mirror of erised. i was totally in love with the book since then! i didnt get a chance to finish the book cuz skool had 1 day left! so i went to library, borrowed the book, watched the movie and was totally in love with the series! i couldnt stop! its a good thing i started readong last year, the very same summer that DH came out . . . so yeah, thats my story. and now that i think about it, i have never said thank you to mrs. riccio. i have to put that at the top of my list! love you mrs. riccio! i hope you force other students to read the series as you forced me!

Awesome episode mugglecasters!! Keep up the amazing work!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2008-11-01 14:12:38

I agree with the debate conclusion. The first one should be the only mandatory one. I always hated having to do all the papers that went along with the mandatory books, so hopefully if it is required, it wont be like that. Very very good podcast this week! :) The ending was hilarious.

Scary Halloween thought. Doesnt John McCain remind you of Cornelius Fudge? Doesnt Sarah Palin remind you of Delores (Ban books, baby. Ban Books.) Umbridge?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2008-11-02 01:45:30

yeah mugglecast I

Um, no czarfore, John McCain does not remind me of Cornelius Fudge, and Sarah Palin does not remind me of Dolores Umbridge. I think that was kind of rude to say.

BIG PROPS TO ELISA! That sounded painful, and eerily realistic at how well your tone of voice was considering it was redone.

Id like to respond to the "what if... JKR was a man" segment. First, I would like to say I am disappointed in the essentializing of men and women you conveyed in your arguement (even as you were claiming not to). Second, I (personally) do not believe feminism is about strictly the equality between men and women - it is so much more complex than that. Rather, I believe that feminism is about the liberation of all human beings from sexual oppression. I urge you all to read some basic feminist theory. That aside, I would like to add a point to the arguement: During the late 1960s a woman named Alice Bradley Sheldon began writing science-fiction stories. However, she did not publish under her true name. Instead, she published under two separate names: James Tiptree, Jr. (a male name) and Raccoona Sheldon (a female name); and (surprise!) her male persona became very popular, while her female persona went comparitively unnoticed. (I highly reccomment some Tiptree Jr., by the way. It is beautifully written feminist science-fiction.) Hope this was the proper place to respond.
