The Telegraph is reporting today that Toby Jones will return to voice Dobby the House-Elf in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The article notes that "he'll soon be back in the recording studio for the next Harry Potter."
This is great news considering we last saw Dobby all the way back in Chamber of Secrets. Filming for the final installment in the series begins this February.
Thanks to Sarah for passing this along!

I am so relieved that Dobby will be in DH. I really miss him, and his death is so sad...I just love him.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 12:27:00
Finally WB did something right... Now how about releasing HBP already!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 12:40:44
Thats really good news. Hopefully the guy who voiced Kreacher also comes back. Im not sure if he was singed on for HBP or not. Would be nice to have both house elves appear for their parts in the last two movies, depending on where they split the movies. Hopefully this means well actually see Shell Cottage, and the imprisonment and escape from the Malfoys Manor will be similar, if not exactly the same in the book.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 12:41:49
I personally didnt like Dobby in Chamber of Secrets, but its great that hell be back, and with the same voice actor for continuity.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 13:16:09
YESSS!! Dobby will be in DH! I am SO happy about this...I was getting a bit worried they werent going to have him in there when his death is the saddest one in the series!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 13:18:13
aaah i heart Dobby! its gonna be so sad when he dies... I hope they leave in the scene when Harry has the funeral for him, that made me cry... long live Dobby!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 13:19:12
Im really hoping this isnt just a cruel rumor, or it doesnt get cut. Nowadays Im expecting all of my favorite scenes to get cut
(Ex: Dumbledors funeral anyone!?0
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 13:26:42
Well its about bloody time!!! If they had cut this out...oh I dont know what Id do. I really do not like this dirctor. Why couldnt we get somebody like Columbus back? And why isnt JKR standing up for us and saying enough is enough?! Why?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 13:28:33
thats terrible, thats one of the most memorable parts of the book! i realise it sounds like i have some morbid obsession with funerals (ie, dobby also), but they are parts of the books that make the fact that people who harry love actually do die quite real
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 13:39:28
thats gonna be pretty sad, but thank God Dobby is back in it and the same person is playing his voice.
at least its one thing WB didnt screw uo

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 14:06:03
If they do Dobbys return properly, it could be one of the most epic moments Ive ever experienced in a film. If they dont, it will make the film so much worse.
I think a lot of Deathly Hallows success as a film (or two) depends on Dobbys scene(s).
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 14:09:06
I loved Columbus but Yates is my second favorite--I hope he does dobby justice... it will be sooooooooooooooooo sad when he dies
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 14:09:36
While it is good that theyre bringing him back, if they are, of course, to me, Dobby in the films doesnt really serve a purpose when compared to the books. What made his death so impactful in the book was the relationship that he and Harry had built over the series. Then having him die was one of the saddest moments because wed seen this friendship grow and seen Dobby grow as a character. There is nothing like that in the films, so it wouldnt really feel the same.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 14:14:30
I think that ending the first of the two movies around or near Dobbys death might be a good place to break, as its dramatic, its heart-wrenching, and would emphasis the seriousness of what the trio are about to embark on in the final half.
Anyway, its absolutely wonderful that Dobby will be back in the last few movies...hes really one of the best characters Jo created! Im getting so excited I can hardly contain myself!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 14:16:31
yess dobby my lover is back! he will be amazing in movie seven. i know it, i just know it.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 14:35:48
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS SERIOUSLY JUST MADE MY WHOLE FREAKIN DAY!!!!! YES!!!!! I really really really hope its true and not just some tabloid rumor!!! PLEASE be true!!!!!!! *fingers crossed*
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 14:45:51
I have to admit, Its about TIME. Weve been waiting since film 4 for Dobby. Hopefully theyll have a few extra scenes with dobby only, just to give his ending more impact. Fingers Crossed!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 14:56:03
Omg I cried sooo much when he died especially when harry was digging his grave. Does anyone agree that Dobby looks like the russian prime minister vladimir putin?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 15:13:33
DONT GET ALL EXCITED GUYS! REMEMBER! DOBBY IS IN THE MALFOY MANOR CHAPTER ONLY, AND THAT IS GOING TO BE PART 2 IN DEATHLY HALLOWS... SO WE WONT SEE DOBBY AT ALL IN THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 15:16:27
Thats wonderful! I loved the voice of Dobby in Chamber of Secrets!! He was perfect for Dobby. For a while there, I was afraid they werent even going to put Dobby in. Theyve replaced him with Neville so many times, I was afraid that they were going to make him be the one to rescue the trio from Malfoy Manor. They wouldnt have killed him, of course! This just made my day!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 15:17:16
KikiPotter , JKR LOVES THE HP MOVIES! And OOTP is Her favorite! So she has nothing to complain about.. Its not ALWAYS about you, you know?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 15:33:27
Exactly, Mattuk. People who only watch the films will see it as sad, because Dobby is cute and nothing more than that to them; unlike the fans who will know Harry and Dobbys relationship which makes his death extremely sad.
I think they wont make too much of a fuss over his death, unfortunately, because I think its a real defining moment for Harry when he realises a lot of things that help him make his next decision. Harry learns how to block out Voldemort, and finally realises what Dumbledore was trying to tell him to do.
They probably will just use it as a sad death, rather than a defining moment.
But Im very glad theyre keeping him in! I was terrified they would cut him, for the reasons I mentioned above.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 15:40:09
Oh Im so relieved. I figured theyd cut out Dobbys scene because you can easily do it with something else, and skip his death all together. Im so so so so so glad that theyre keeping him. Im thinking that theyre going to end the series right, or as close to the books as possible. THANK YOU!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 15:57:31
Awooohooo! so happy they really cant cut Dobbys appearance in DH, it was so important in so many ways and...well...i love that little guy!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:03:19
oh and G_wizzle - i totally agree about the Putin thing! I only noticed it tho coz Stephen Fry mentioned it on QI, apparently someone had told Putin he looked like Dobby anf for some unknown reason he was annoyed! ;)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:06:51
well yay! im also pleased that Dobby is gonna be back in the movie. It seems like something WB would do to cut him out. gerrrr them
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:16:45
Ahhh This February...
Once they finish its the end of an era.
I think Im gonna cry....
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:20:22
YAY DOBBBY!!!!!! nice to have him back!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:26:37
YES!!! Dobby is the best.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:36:24
While Dobbys inclusion is a good thing for the film, the fact that they had left him out of POA, GOB, OotP, and HBP will lessen the dramatic impact of his death. Probably the biggest dramatic reation from a non-book knowledged viewer will bethe deaths of Mad_eye, Hedwig, and Fred Weasley....with possibly Tonks and Lupin....if indeed they do decide to kill them off in the films. Dobbys, Freds and for some reason Colin Creeveys deaths got to me the most in the books.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:37:15
Meh, it wont be the same. If in the books, Dobby was only in the 2nd and last books, his death wouldnt be so great. I thought it was cute the way he idolized Harry in 4, 5, and 6, which is why I love him. It wont be the same in the movie, although I guess it WOULD be sad that he and Harry finally meet after 5 years and he dies.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:40:33
You guys DO know that COS almost became banned in Russia because Vladimir Putin thought the movie ridiculed him (Dobbys face) Im thinking Deathly Hallows is going to be another banned HP movie there, ROFL!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 16:47:01
yeah! it is good to know that DH will have some continuity. and to the guy who said that the HP movies left Dobby of of POA I suggest you go back and reread that book man cause he is not in it. granted he doesnt appear in the the other films where he does appear in the books, but frankly he was an non essential character in the other books. in DH he is freaking important
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 17:24:19
YES!!!
I was SO afraid they wouldnt bring Dobby back!!
OMG Im SO HAPPY! :D
|

YYYYYYYYyEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am so happy! dobby is my favorute! i thought for a while that dobby wouldnt return!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 17:44:23
YAY!!! Although this is the 1 thing i wouldnt mind if they cut. It would save me ALOT of tears. I Hope that Dobby looks exactly like in the COS just in proper clothes. Cause remember that in Number 5 The Dementors look completely different to in number 3? I liked the looks of the dementors in number 3 better.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 18:06:03
agreed. the dementors were demented (lol) in 5. also what was up with that veil? it looks like mist or something
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 18:26:52
I didnt know COS was banned anywhere, thats really interesting. An its sad that we only will probably see Dobby for about 10 minutes before his death but atleast they didnt cut him out, that would have screwed up a huge part of the plot because Harry does most of his path-choseing while he digs Dobbys grave
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 18:34:13
oh thank god...i was so worried they were going to cut dobby, and i love him. although ill probably be a crying mess during his death scene. i suppose with 2 movies, theres a lot more room for WB to include the smaller things.
|

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 18:49:09
oh, good! I mean, it didnt even occur to me that they might not include Dobby, but Im certainly glad they didnt get rid of him! Also, why is there an ad for the caption contest on the side of the page when the caption contest is postponed indefinitely? I got all excited when I saw the ad, I was like, Great! its back on! and then it wasnt. Hmm. Maybe theyre going to update it again soon.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-09 18:59:56
To tovarbaker: while yes, Dobby does nopt appear in the book POA, I suggest you reread my post andthe post afterward. It has to do with dramatic impact of his death in the film. Try some comprehension next time than being a nit-picking little nit.

I cant wait for the Malfoy Manor bit. Isnt it going to be awesome when Helena Bonham Carter tortures Emma Watson? its so evil and crazy. I always get excited when Ron or Hermione get to do something cool for a change instead of just following Harry. Thats one of the best things about the book. Theyre not sidekicks there equals all fighting together. Awesome...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-01-10 13:16:12
Dobby will be nice to have back and that is the least they can do. Giving
up his life and saving the trio and more.
Kreacher was by far the most intertaining in the entire book 7. How could you forget the frying pan or when he leads elfs to fight. I would loved him in book 7. I hope they really use him as a little comedy which 7 would need if its done well at all.
But, you cant help but love Dobby.
