JKR among authors to receive public library bonus
JKR among authors to receive public library bonus Several popular authors, including JK Rowling, will be receiving cheques from the state of Ireland because of their popularity in libraries. As The Times Online reports:

Binchy said many bestselling authors donate their cheques to charity but they remain an important incentive. “It’s only fair that if hundreds of people borrow your book, you get paid,” she said. “It’s especially important for those who don’t get huge sales. When you see that PLR written on an envelope your heart soars because it’s never bad news. It’s confirmation people are reading your books.”

Wow...does JK Rowling even need anymore money? I'm sure she will donate hers to charity too, but that's amazing. Getting paid because so many people check out your books.

"Binchy??" My, that's an unfortunate name. I'm sure Jo will donate it.

Excellent! Congratulations to Jo, and what a wonderful initiative of Ireland.

It is great that we're giving writers all this credit but I agree wholeheartedly with martinaluvsron. Ireland has what has to be the worst economy at the moment... We can't afford to give people money, I even hear of libraries closing down due to cutbacks. Great. Now our libraries are going to do worse because our money is going to people in financially OK countries. Not to sound mean but, I'd really love it if Jo gave the money back... Not that she doesn't deserve it, she does, but still...

I agree with Fantasy 7 and martinaluvsron. It's a nice idea, but they ought to be a little more subjective in who they are giving this money to. I'm not saying Jo doesn't deserve this money, but... well, the libraries cannot afford it. I'm not from Ireland myself, but the recession is world wide and I imagine most libraries must be feeling the pinch quite badly. Still, their decision.

way to go JK Rowling!!! you sooo earned it!!!!

Guys seriously? Get over it, I'm from Ireland and yeah, the recession is crap, but so is the rest of the world. Brain Cowen may have done his best to make it even worse than England's recession at the moment, but the cheque these authors get is not a huge amount, it's just a token of appreciation for the fact that the library is doing so well with the author's book. It comes out of the library fund, and I don't think that any library you believe is closing down would be involved, (I haven't heard of any) so stop sounding so negative. I love the way Ireland is doing this.
