"I'm really excited to be part of this production and thrilled to be working with Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon) again. This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed. Rehearsal starts in January and I am very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharock who is an incredibly talented director. I only hope I do the role justice."
According to DanRadcliffe.com, who received the news from Daniel, "Equus focuses on the relationship between seventeen-year-old Alan Strang (Radcliffe), who has blinded six horses with a spike, and Martin Dysart (Griffiths), a middle-aged psychiatrist who tries to figure out what drove Strang to commit the crime."The role of Alan is usually performed nude in several parts of the play. However, there have been multiple versions of Equus in which no nudity was involved. Whether Dan will play the part nude or not, we don't know at this early stage. The play is expected to open in London sometime next spring.

I hope Dan doesn't go nude...I hate it that Hollywood corrupts the young actors nowadays...
i dont think this would wreck his career because look at all the postive things people and fans have already said about it
He seems to enjoy this kind of intense material, and it certainly is a way of breaking the mould. Johnny Depp has acted in some ... interesting roles and it has worked well for him. Hopefully this will do the same for Dan, I wonder how nervous he is about being only known as Harry. Good luck Dan.
On Netscape News they're reporting he IS doing the nude scene
I can't believe how immature some of you are. I think this play will be a great career move for Dan. Some actors start out doing kid-focused movies and can never get out of that mold, or they stay typecast forever. This is definitely a step in the right direction for Dan. And if he does decide to do the scene nude, it won't ruin his career. LMAO. Do you know how many famous actors and actresses have done nude scenes? Dan is not going to ruin his career, or go into the porno business, lmao. "The plot doesn't sound good actually, but that's probably not why everyone's going to see it." Actually...most people go to see theater because of the plot...they want stories that will make them think and that they can discuss afterwards. I mean, do you go see movies just for the sex scenes or because they have good actors? No, you go for the plot (good actors simply help).
Foxnews.com is reporting Dan will appear nude in at least one scene.
i just saw this on broadway.com!! http://www.broadway.com/gen/Buzz_Story.aspx?ci=534153 i was all psyched and then i wondered if mugglenet posted it yet, so i looked and you did! and broadway.com said nothing about any nudeness, so idk about that.
people have been saying it would hurt his career if he played a nude role but i just dont see how that would hurt it. the fangirls would love it and other people would just respect him for taking on a more mature role. this is a chance for him to get more experience and prove to us, as others have said, that he can act. anyway, if you look on cnn.com by searching the site you can find an article that was published today about daniel and this new role. it confirms that he will indeed be nude in one scene in the play. i felt i should say that to end the speculation.
I'm sure he will be nude, its the way the play is meant to be seen, Dan has been an adult in his country for over a year now. I'm pretty sure Leo did a nude scene and other actors/ actress have too, it wouldn’t run his career , it’ll be good for it.
i heard that he is suppose to be naked but im not really sure???
dobby_rocks, but there have been renditions without nudity too, plus he is riding the horse, people won't see much, if that's the problem. But, haven't you all seen a nude man before? why are you all so afraid of the human body? I remember when Nicole Kidman did that play where she was naked, it was completely normal, and she happily continued with her career. I'm sure that if it was other boy, people would find it normal. I suppose it's just because they have to get used to the idea that little Harry is not a kid anymore, he is an actor. And this is part of acting. And I don't understand how some of you can mix a nude scene with money. If Dan would want money he would do a movie, not theatre. He receives many scripts all the days, he could do whatever he wants, but he wants to do this because it's a great play and a great opportunity.
Posted by smartperson 9 hours ago AHAHAHAHAH did he even read the script !!!! How can he accept a role like that. Have any of you read the play equus. The lead guy rides horses naked at night ... also when he has sex with a girl in the barn he imagines she is a horse!!!! Oh lets not forget he stabs the horses eyes out but thinks they are gods. Why the hell did daniel accept a role like that ! - - - - - - - - -- - - -- - -- -- -- -------- -- - - - - - - - -- - - - -- ---- ---- because he takes himself serious as an actor and not a one-way-street, he is now filming the 5th out of 7 movies to come, by the time the last is shot he will be 21 or so. Whwn he stays in Movieland he be doomed to play one act again and again, facing any danger of drug and boose addiction that so often strucks young actors. He cannot stay a Harry Potter type for the rest of his life, I think he would go completely bonkers if he did. It is very clever to undertake extreme other things this early in his career....... and damn it will take guts. He will be known for his Harry Potter, but likely be admired for his Alan Strang. I would not be surpriced he got the advice from Alan Rickman.
Oh....wow. Interesting! Is is just me or is this more bizzare than Emma the Pink Power Ranger??
interesting....and weird
I'm pretty darn sure that there will be no nudity involved. And what would be the point anyway? Plus, I'm sure Dan wouldn't do that. But that's really cool he's doing the play... it'll be something different for him and plus, live theatre is wayy cool. : )
Here's what theage.com.au. had to say. Radcliffe to shed all * * Email * Print * Normal font * Large font July 28, 2006 - 2:26PM Daniel Radcliffe Daniel Radcliffe Photo: David Mariuz AdvertisementAdvertisement Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is set to ditch his glasses as well as his clothes. The 17-year-old actor, who is now a multimillionaire thanks to the Harry Potter films, will make his West End debut in the controversial play Equus, The Times says. Radcliffe, who is currently filming Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, will play Alan Strang, a psychologically disturbed youth who is interviewed by a psychiatrist after he blinds six horses with a metal spike in Peter Shaffer's controversial drama in London next year. But the role would require Radcliffe to simulate sexual ecstasy while riding naked. This is a departure for Radcliffe, whose career has been dominated by his part as JK Rowling's teenage wizard. He recently finished filming December Boys, in which he plays one of four orphans hoping to be adopted. - agencies So yeah, he will be nude. But who cares? He's a "big boy" He can take care of himself and he knows what he's got himself into. And he can always wear a nude suit.
Hahahah That's hilarious! Nude scenes..I bet us girls would like that.. I'm just sitting here cracking! Mugglenet, you guys better get a tape for this!
This is an amazing opportunity for Dan, I'm only sorry that I won't be able to see it because I don't live near the UK. Equus is an amazing show, one of my favorites, but to reiterate what jd195527 said: Equus is a very dark show and only for those who are mature enough to understand it. It is in many ways a psychological piece and the nudity is part of the artistic side of the show. It is to be taken seriously (whether Dan decides to do it or not). The show is also very graphic. I was in a production of the show and even after seeing the action over and over, it was still hard to stomach some of the things that go on. Again, this is a great opportunity for Dan to branch out in his acting, but this is something that the drooling fangirls may want to stay away from, at least until they know that they are mature enough to understand it. May I suggest reading the play before buying tickets, that way you know what you're in for before you spend your money.
Umm allright... same for me, only it don't ruin any of the HP filming .. well, NUDE? I just pictured alot of screaming fangirls in my head now ... I don't think he will be nude ...
I know this has nothing to do with the topic but i have to get it off my chest... I JUST GOT A JOB!!!
Alright, many of you have said I don't think he will be nude, but as many other commenters have stated, CNN and Daniels publicist says "there IS a nude seen, but i'ts not what the play is about" which, mostlikely clearly states that yes, he would be nude. but it shouldn't be such a big deal. you could call me a "fangirl" of his, but if I lived in the U.K. and was able to see the play, it would not be to see him naked... riding a horse. it's immature for everyone to go crazy just because he wont be clothed. honestly, if your a male, you've seen it before, in a mirror, and if your a female, (if you haven't already) you will see it one day. it's for the purpose, and expression of art. not to get girls to giggle as he rides his way across the stage on a horse. nor would you see much of anything anyways, if you've been on a horse before, (or better yet, seen someone riding) they are magnificent (large) creatures, and depending onthe way he's facing, either the mane or the horse itself would be covering him.... though... I dare say it'd be rather uncomfortable to be riding a horse... naked... if your a male, then again I wouldn't know. But the main point of the play is not that he'll be nude, the main point is, that he'll be IN the play. and it's not as if he was the one who wrote it, he just plays a mentally disrupted character, who obviously isn't what people would revere as normal. and I suggest you read the play before seeing it so you'd know what your getting into. twisted and mature though it is. it's quite amazing, to see just how Alan's (dan's) mind works.
Ok this is a little crazy. I would go see it, mostly because I love the play, its an amzing (though thoroughly disturbing) play that is really going to give Dan a chance at something new and real. And like has been said before, there are ways in theater to make someone look nude without them actually bearing all. that is likely the way it will happen. I just realized though, if you count...Dan will be nearly 20 btw he finishes the 7th movie. hrm. and rupert 21. wow.
Whoa! Can't wait to see THAT!
I doubt Dan will be nude But Girls keep r hopes up lol! We love u Jo!
Whoa...that would be AMAZING. Too bad he probably won't be nude...
But, it like, won't be a movie or anything. :-(
what does he mean a huge departure??? somebody explain what he means!!!!! really awesome about him doing this play though. I wished I lived there so I could see it. it sounds great. ahh live theatre. gotta love it :)
Can't you read? He WILL be nude for parts. Why don't you all grow up and get a little more mature about nudity? This is for art. This is for theatre. He will continue filming the rest of the HP films, too. They can't cut him off because of the contract. I mean, who would want to see HP7 on film with a different actor portraying Harry? K.thx.bai Purple Hazze FTW
Haha, true. Dang, I wish I lived in London.
"it's for the purpose, and expression of art. not to get girls to giggle as he rides his way across the stage on a horse" Amen, and Dan is brave to take on a play so different from movies and HP. I'm happy for him and his exploring the world of acting, and i think I might have to read this play just because it sounds super interesting though I won't be able to see it.
wow.... now i want to read the play i have never heard about it unitl now. it sounds like a great step forward for Daniel and i wish him great success.
I read this play in my Drama class in college, and I LOVED it. Yes, it's disturbing and very mature, but it's still a great play. I commend Dan for taking on this very difficult role. I think he's going to be brilliant!
Sounds like Dan's moving on to some pretty mature stuff. Good for him! He can't be Harry Potter forever so he might as well start doing really difficult roles now. Wish him luck with this!
h_boo, Lucentio, Shana, keeper00 very well said! Why, Audra? Weazley, it's not about being attractive or not... that's the lest important thing is this play. I found this too: "...Equus is far from a conventional mystery, in which solving the crime relieves tension and restores a stable society. Instead, Dysart's search for the meaning of Alan's act leads him to doubt his own vocation and integrity. The closer he comes to understanding his patient's motives, the more confused Dysart is about how he should respond to Alan and the mental world he has created. The ultimate, insoluble mystery is embodied in the horse-god Equus himself."
hey, it says Richard Griffiths will be in the play too, the actor who portrays Uncle Vernon.
ahh, thank you quidditchplayer. someone who understands. though I have never seen the play (outside of written words) I really wish I could. not because of Daniel Radcliffe, but because it isn't a "conventional" mystery, it is the search of understanding, a man's integrity, what is the worlds view on integrity as opposed to Alan's? He is considered mentally disturbed, but does he view himself as such?---------------------------------------------------------------- and MargaretLouise though I would admitt, that would not be a bad sight (lol) you should know what your getting into if indeed you plan on seeing the play. along with the fact that he'd be riding the horse naked, somehow that doesn't seem entirely that appealing...
It's amazing how people react to the word 'nude'. The play should only be seen by those who can truly appreciate the play for what it is trying to convey: the complexities of the human brain and mental health and what happens to one particular person who is struggling with reality. It should NOT be seen by immature audiences who focus solely on the fact that Daniel Radcliffe will be performing nude. The immature viewer would walk away completely confused and probably scared due to the fact they don't understand. But, what else to expect from those who focus on the possibility of seeing Dan nude. Sad, truly sad.
Hannah_at_Hogwarts I wanted to let you know that your brilliant. you understand. and I thank you for that.
"a joke"? "Pathetic"? Wow, I didn't know so many people thought of nudity in such odd ways. XD; It's not like he's doing porn. And it's a play, don't lots of plays have nudity? O__o; He's just playing a weird character, that's all. I think it sounds very curious. I'm interested. :3
omg i hope he is not nude... it will make his rep go down the drain!
I heard that Dan was going to appear nude. I was really surprised when I head this, because I didn't think he would do something like that. Honestly, I would not be interested in seeing him nude... that would be um.. interesting.
danfan1o1, what rep? it will only help his reputation, people will take him even more seriously ;)
Now that we know he IS doing it in the nude, we better hope he's been lifting weights. lol. I wish I could see the play. I'm going to read it for sure.
To Shana: I can honestly say that I've been never told I was brilliant, I thank you. I just hope that it helps people understand a bit better.
Actually, maybe they'll release a film of the play.
I can't believe what a big deal some of you make this out to be. Dan needs to show he is a great actor in every aspect and he can't do that if he just does HP. He can't be known as "Harry Potter" for all of his career and I think this is his own way to finally come out. It really is not such a big deal for those who understand the meaning of the play and what it signifies. Being "nude" just conveys the seriousness of it and the situations. It doesn't mean he is being crazy, but just being an actor. It certainly does not mean "fangirls" can get all hyped up and giddy or whatever knowing that their favorite actor isn't wearing anything. So all I have to say is good luck Dan and I hope it all will go great!
Personally, I believe that he can do what he wants. I am sure he has discussed this with his parents and that is all that matters. This is a terrific play. Whether he does it nude or not is his business. I live in Tennessee (USA) and this is all over the entertainment reports on the television. WHO CARES!!! He cannot stay a teenager for the rest of his life. I am just wondering how this play will affect HP movie 6 when they start filming it. You would figure they would film it shortly after 5 comes out. I know that is a whole 6 months to do the play, however, is he going to travel to promote movie 5???
NUDE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I thought Dan had a "no nudity" contract....perhaps I must have heard wrong......well....I hope that he performs the role great(ly?)!!! Not that he wouldn't.....what I mean is that...I hope HE thinks he's doing a great job. But I wish that I could go see it......GRRR.
I'm laughing at people saying 'I thought Dan had a no-nudity clause?'. Up until a few days ago he was a 16-year-old boy! You don't need a bloody no-nudity clause at that age because it's a fact that he wouldn't legally be able to appear in anything nude anyhow! Look...he'll be as 'nude' in this as he was in the GoF bath scene. Apart from that, it's gonna be strange seeing Dan and Richard Griffiths in the same play. How can you NOT think of them as Harry and Vernon? The same is going to apply in Driving Lessons with Rupert and Julie Walters.
Good for Dan!!! I'm sure he'll do a great job. I bet tickets for the play are already selling out. :)
