"I'm really excited to be part of this production and thrilled to be working with Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon) again. This is obviously a huge departure for me as an actor, but Equus is such an amazing play that this really was an opportunity not to be missed. Rehearsal starts in January and I am very much looking forward to working with Thea Sharock who is an incredibly talented director. I only hope I do the role justice."
According to DanRadcliffe.com, who received the news from Daniel, "Equus focuses on the relationship between seventeen-year-old Alan Strang (Radcliffe), who has blinded six horses with a spike, and Martin Dysart (Griffiths), a middle-aged psychiatrist who tries to figure out what drove Strang to commit the crime."The role of Alan is usually performed nude in several parts of the play. However, there have been multiple versions of Equus in which no nudity was involved. Whether Dan will play the part nude or not, we don't know at this early stage. The play is expected to open in London sometime next spring.

Tee-hee-hee . Dan doing nude . That made me giggle with glee . I dont think he'll do it though .
This is from Dan's site.--- "This is a production of great emotional and psychological magnitude, it's NOT about nudity (and contrary to uneducated reports, the entire role is NOT in the nude!!!!). There are of course graphic sequences within the plot, but again, REMEMBER, it is NOT real - it will be ACTED. PLEASE - do not go nuts in the comments about it - explicit comments will be deleted" ---
I can totally see why Daniel has made this move. He wants to get away from Harry Potter and become a serious actor which is admirable. Clearly he has thought long and hard over this. He didnt wake up one morning and go lets do this play. The people around him also would make sure it was acceptable because he is still in Harry Potter. As posted before Daniel is only contracted up to OOTP. So he may decide he does not want to do Potter after this film is over and done with and people forget this. And with the childish behavior that is going on with all this nude stuff i can see why he may not want to continue to do Potter as alot of you fans seem to be childish and may be hurting his career in the long run. I mean i have said before if alot of you fans decide to go and see this play most of you aint going to be muture and could ruin the play. This is not a movie people pay alot of money to go and see plays and if young girls are going to sit there and giggle its going to hit ticket sales big time. So stop being so selfish and obessive over Dan and GET OVER YOURSELVES.
brave move dan, erm doesn't sound like my cup of tea though, violence towards animals never a good thing, even fictional...especially horses! Why would someone write a play like that?! Isn't there enough depressing stuff in the world?
After I heard about this I started doing some research into the play and the movie. The play looks very interesting from what I read in the preview on Amazon, and I can't wait to see Dan in it. But on CBS there is a quote from Dan's publicist that says there will be a nude scene. But I guess it's still too early to be sure yet, so we'll just have to wait and see. Nude or not this play is going to prove that Dan can act, and I for one can not wait to see it. Good luck Dan!
Well, if it was Dan's intent to cause a stir he's certainly done it. Even if he hadn't intended on causing a stir, there you go anyway. Apparently, nothing about the play seems to bother him in the slightest... or he's been offered an enormous sum of money to compensate any fears one might have either by playing such a disturbed character or by performing naked on stage in front of hundreds of onlookers, not once, but night after night. Some days twice. I guess one could eventually get used to it, but how does one prepare for it mentally-- being naked on stage, I mean? Seriously. And if this should become something that proves to be more difficult for him in ways unforseen to him at this time, what then? Once you're on stage, you're on stage. Fantasmic
somehow i doubt he will be in the nude. there are ways to give the illusion that he is riding the horses nude. i think rowling would not want him to be harry anymore if he does indeed do nude. lots of kids look up to him. i am so happy for dan to be able to stretch his wings. all the best dan ^^^quote from sandra she stole the words from my mouth...
Ok, well, it's confirmed that Dan will in fact be appearing nude. If you want proof, I read it in the city's newspaper today. http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&call_pageid=971358637177&c=Article&cid=1154123417719 And I just submitted the news to MuggleNet, though I'm sure they probably know by now. To be honest, as much as I am a fan, I do think he's a tad young to be publicly nude, but now we know how much money is going to be rolling in for this play.
Nude. thats all i have to say:)
I found a fantastic summary of the play (from the book) "An explosive play that took critics and audiences by storm, "Equus" is Peter Shaffer's exploration of the way modern society has destroyed our ability to feel passion. Alan Strang is a disturbed youth whose dangerous obsession with horses leads him to commit an unspeakable act of violence. As psychiatrist Martin Dysart struggles to understand the motivation for Alan's brutality, he is increasingly drawn into Alan's web and eventually forced to question his own sanity. 'Equus' is a timeless classic and a cornerstone of contemporary drama that delves into the darkest recesses of human existence" notice, the don't even talk about the nudity in it. there is nothing sensual, so there is nothing for people to loose their respect for him. I'm sorry you all feel that way. but really, in the end he's already decided it, and, it has been confirmed that he will be nude in one scene. So if you decide you'll lose respect for him, then you've already lost it. and that's quite sad
*laughs her head off* HAHAHAHA!!!!!* gasps for air* MWAHAHAHA!!!!! No,serioulsy????????? come on....
mmmph...HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!! i really cant stop laughing!!!...a NUDE scene...no, seriously?*tears of laughter run down face* my gawd...how embarrasing 4 him...but quite sad from another perspective...i think many ppl will lose R-E-S-P-E-C-T 4 him...mainly teens around my age who really luv him...but the absolutely insane fans will luv it...sheesh...hes 17!!!!
I have seen so few childish comments about this play in this board and I am quite happy about it, I know some of the childish comments have to come from 11 or 12 year old kids, comments like I would lose some respect for him, why he dind't get other role, that is immoral and so on...like I said before I am quite happy about the majority if the comments here that are positive and mature.. way to go mugglenet people.
I can't see why everyone is so suprised that there is a possibility of a naked scene. Acting is an art, and I believe that the director of this play will do whatever is necessary to take the production to its greatest. I am very glad that Dan is expanding his horizons and taking on deeper, more complicated roles. Dan is an actor, not a fangirl satisfier. I am actually very pleased that Dan isn't falling into the type-cast, one-role steriotype which often happens to actors who become famous because of one role. I sincerely hope that WB doesn't make a stink over this role, because Dan is honing is acting skills at a much deeper level. I wish Dan all the best kind of luck, and I hope he continues exploring his art by taking new and more difficult roles.
Whoever the director is, I think he's a total idiot for choosing Daniel to portray Alan; because daniel is one of the worst, most unemotional, wooden and unwitty thing of an actor in our time...he sucks. There are so many amazing talents out there that don't get enough attention because they don't have "gorgeous" faces and rich lives; which is the only reason why people are fascinated with daniel radcliffe. period
miss_vj, ronroxmysox and other immature people, the only embarrasing thing here is you, and that some of us have to read your ignorant and immature comments. You are a shame for the HP fandom, it's people like you that make us have bad fame. You are the ones to whom people (like me) have lost respect, not Dan, I respect him more now. Please, grow up.--------------------Aggresive_duck, you are the only idiot here, because you think you know more than professional people. You think you know more than one of the most brilliant writers of our time. Peter Shaffer saw Daniel playing this character and he thinks Dan plays him really well. So who are you to doubt it? "gorgeous faces" have nothing to do with this, because the writer said he won't sell his rights if they didn't find an actor who really can portray this character. Maybe you should inform yourself better before judging.---------Some of you are showing the rest of us how ignorant, disrespetful and immature people write here, and that makes that your opinion doesn't matter much.
xoxDreamerGirlxox, that someone is nude in a play, doesn't mean that the audience will see all his body. And don't believe all you read in the press, I have read many things they have written about this play which are not true. If you really want to know about it, read the play, not what the journalist say.---------- 'Adso', if you think that, then I think you would like the play, because what it defends is that people shouldn't hurt animals.
Whoa, some of you guys are getting way worked up about this. Come on, it's not like if Dan's nude it'll change the fate of the world.
There is also this, which says he's going to ride a horse naked. http://www.comcast.net/entertainment/index.jsp?cat=ENTERTAINMENT&fn=/2006/07/28/443879.html&cvqh=buzz_harry
And how they know that? the producers, or director, or Dan haven't still talked about that. Don't believe all you read. I'm not saying there isn't a nude scene, I'm saying wait and then talk if you want, but talk with some real basis ;) Anyway, if he is riding the horse, it's like he is not naked, because the horse (which I suppose other actor will play) will be like clothes. So if that's what bothers some of you, don't worry anymore.
A nude Daniel Radcliffe is something I never, ever want to see.
Ethel, no one is telling you have to see it. Don't worry. ¬¬' And those scenes are not supposed to be sexy, it's not there to show Alan's body, it's there to show his soul, his soul to what this character considers his God.
I don't think this is good for the Harry movies. He'll probably not do Harry again...
Please don't spoil my harry potter image of u, Dan!
TherealMrsRadcliffe, people like Keira Knightley, Nicole Kidman did nide scenes, and in cinema, not only theatre and still doing movies, in fact their are at the best point of their careers.
I'm so glad that the HP actors are doing varied roles, and not going the "American Teen Star" route, ie teen comedies and nothing else. Stage requires a whole different skill set, memorizing lines, improvising on stage... there's no one yelling "CUT" in theatre :^). It would be awesome to see him on stage, clothed or not. -^__^-
They are right, some of you are too immature. >'confused', his clean image will be the same, he is not killing anyone or something like that, he is acting, which is an art. He is the same nice and down to earth boy who stayed under the rain to sign me (and my friends) an autograph. >WickedWitch, why do you think that? you are not giving us any reason, you shouldn't mix things. This will only help HP, because he will become a even better actor, and we will see it clearly in the HP movies. I hope (and it looks like that) he continues to play Harry, I won't watch the movies if he is not playing Harry. I started to read the books after I watched the first movie, he was a kid but he made me love this character and this story, so it's thanks to him that I decided to read these great books and now I can not life without them. So thankyou very much, Daniel.
Seriously people? I really think that this play is a great opportunity for Dan, and we should rspect him for it. The nude scenes are not meant to be funny or hot and I believe that a bunch of 12 year old fangirls can't understand that. He's getting older and he can make his own decisions about his choice of roles. Good luck Dan, hope he does well in all of his future roles, may they be clothed or nude.
I shrieked when I saw this! I keep thinking he cant go nude, but what do I know? Well, from what I've heard about the play it seems really mature. Well... it would be intresting to see. I just really hope this does not delay the filming of hbp! I will commit murder if it does!*sarcasm, duh* Well, this is a good oppurtunity for Radcliffe. Me rooting in the imaginary crowd: "GO DANNY BOY! GOOOOO!!!"
I read the news of Danâs appearing in Equus last night, and Iâve thought on it off and on since. I consider myself a loyal fan of the Harry Potter series, both on film and in print. I love all the actors/actresses who play our beloved characters and I applaud them for expanding their craft into other roles when given the opportunity. As for Dan personally, I have to say that I was very, very impressed with his maturity during an interview I watched awhile back when he talked about the types of roles heâd like to play beyond Harry Potter. He spoke about roles that would challenge him creatively, and would afford him the opportunity to work with others (actors, actresses, directors) who could help him improve as an actor. As for Equus specifically, although Iâd heard of it, I knew nothing about it until following links from some of the articles posted about Danâs appearance in the play. It seems like something that would be very hard to watch, in my opinion, because of the âdisturbedâ nature of Danâs character, but it also seems like something that could potentially have a tremendous impact on Danâs career. So many of the posters here seem focused on the possibility of him appearing nude, but I think the plot itself is so dark and serious that it will be of minimal focus during the actual play if he does appear that way. (Not minimizing impact of an unclothed Dan, just saying I think people will be too lost in the story line for that to be all theyâre watching at that point). I believe if Dan plays this part, with or without clothes, and can be a convincing Alan Strang, it will be proof positive he can be a convincing actor in any part he chooses to play. I personally think he can do it, and do it well. I think heâs a wonderful actor. My greatest regret is that living in the US, I wonât get the chance to attend. I would LOVE to see Dan in a stage play, although honestly, the plot of Equus probably wouldnât be my first choice, but Iâd go anyway, viewing it...
ooh i plan on being in london early this summer!! how awesome! *thinks to herself: i hope he does it nude..*
A part of me doesn't want him to do this because i want him to carry on with Harry Potter - i mean the whole "departure for me as an actor" sounds worrying but if its what he wants then i guess he should go for it (even if there are nude scenes!) :)
someone said something abt a nude suit. thats smart. he may go for it. though according to the times of india, he really is gonna be naked, but u cant trust that paper. and doing the play doesnt mean he gives up being hp, he wont ever be dumb enough to do that. its the role that gave him all that mony n fame he's enjoying at this very moment!
yes amrita_drad, we shouldn't trust the papers, because they are inveting many things. The producers or his agent said there is a nude scene, but that doesn't mean he will be nude. We all know that in the bath scene in HP, Harry is supposed to be nude, but we know Dan wasn't. In theatre there are many ways to do this kind of scenes, and I think everyone should wait and see it before start to guess and invent etc >>>>HProx, Dan already told Melissa and Emerson in the GoF NY premiere what scenes of book 6 he can not wait to film. He loves these books, he is a fan like us, and the people who makes these movies are like his family. I'm sure he wants to do all the HP movies, because of those reasons, not because of money or fame. If he would want that, he wouldn't do theatre, he would accept some of those Hollywood scrips he recives everyday. When he says "departure", he means that it's a challenging role, different of what he has done before, he doesn't mean he won't do more HP movies.
So, about this... I am also in theatre/acting and I can get where he's coming from. Doing this play (nude or not) gives him a different role than the hero, which isn't a bad role, but that's only one thing he's done. If doing this play opens his eyes as a performer, than good for him. I'd do it too, except I can't because I'm a chick and not in the UK... Anyways, about the nude stuff... He's 17, so wouldn't he have to get parental permission to do nude scenes? And so what if he does? Sure, fangirls (yes, me included, I know what you're all thinking) would probably go crazy, but... Like I've stated, doing this play could change him as an actor and we'll just have to see how it turns out. But I think it's good that he's expanding his career. Good for him! =)
Okay, I just posted a comment, but I'm posting this too because there are obviously a few issues... People, Dan would be stupid to end his career as Harry Potter. He's NOT going to do that. And if he did, it would be a terrible move, b/c most of his fans love him for that role. Don't you think he has any sense? He's probably thought this through very well. He will not quit HP, it got him started in his career.
Well, Dan started with David Copperfield, not Harry Potter. Btw he is the best young David Copperfield I've ever seen. But I agree Dan will continue with HP, why not? this is just a proyect he will do between OotP and HBP, while they finish with OotP post production. >>>>>Other thing I don't understand is why some people act like they are surpreised... continuously we see nude people in movies, tv, tv ads, magazines... Anyway, that's not the important point of this play, that's what the press like to sensationalize...
Dan in the nude...methinks this play will sell out for quite some time... ;)
um...no thanks. thats a wierd role...seriously disturbed child.
Have you read the play whitefire99?
Just realized my original post (10 or so before this one) was cropped short. I was trying to say I'd go watch the play in spite of its rather disturbing plot if I were in the London area because the more popularity Dan gains as an actor, the fewer opportunities one may have to see him perform on stage. It could be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I truly hate that I'll miss it because I am, shall we say "geographically challenged" by living in the US. I would be truly disturbed if Dan chose not to continue the Harry Potter series, but I honestly doubt that he would at this point. My bigger fear might be that parents of younger fans might be bothered if Dan does the nude scenes in Equus and raised enough concern that then studio might think they should replace him. If that were to happen, I wouldn't watch the remaining films, merely as a show of support for Dan. (If he chose, on his own, not to do them, then I'd still see them).
i think that it's a great opportunity for dan to be working in vastly different productions!!! i mean the play itself would be really great for him as an actor and he's still doing and filming ootp and hopefully he'll do the other hp movies!!! but about playing the part nude, it his choice to do it so if he does it its good for him but its even better for the audience....(ummm) and if he doesn't thats fine to its not like people are going to be crying over it!!!!! but also if he does do it nude it might change the way parents and children perceive harry potter, because harry and dan both have a very big infulence on the children, parents and the world and it would be really bad it it took a negative point!!! but yeah whatever he does people will still show their support for him and love him.... like me!!!!!
I admire Dan. That was a brave move. I am doing the play myself in Aus. I think he would be perfect for the role of Alan. I dosen't ned 2 be nood and anyway he could wear a body suit and still get the same effect.
Morbid. Blinding them with stakes? Honestly people! What's all the fuss about him being naked? Takes away the minds image if you ask me.
i think Dan is doing this play to be able to make a statement with the message of the show. the fact that he'll be nude in one scene probably isn't even an issue for him. i mean he's not doing to show off his body to be sexual. he is in fact playing an insane boy, so why wouldn't that boy do things that are not deemed respectable in our society. of course he would. i mean he tortured horses for crying out loud. and that is something that people won't even really care about when they see the actual story that is played out. Congrats Dan, i'm sure it'll be a success
Carol61 and amy4dan, in my opinion the next HP movies should be PG-13, well... I don't know about the last one because we haven't read the last book. But the books always get darker and darker, so I suppose the last one has to be (I hope) the darkest. And I hope the same happens with the movies. So I think the only thing that should matter for the parents is that. Most of the older HP actors have played in what some of you would call disturbing movies or plays, and I don't think the parents are worried about that. Clemence was nude in a French movie, and the parents didn't care. So this is the same. You don't have to go to see a movie thinking of what the actors have played in past movies, or I will keep imagine Jonhy Depp with scissors in his hands... the actress who plays Umbrige in OotP is known for her role in a movie where she played a woman who helped to have an abortion to other people, and no one have complained about that, it wouldn't make sense... it was other movie.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Nude boy! tee hee hee! *just so you know...I'm pulling a really cheeky face right now! * I'm so chuffed to see Dan doing something different and progressing really well! Go Dan, Go Dan!!!!!!!!!!! wooooooooooooo! lv Natasha
To nearly_headless_nick, and really to anyone else who may have thought what I wrote suggested I think it would be a bad thing for Dan to appear in Equus, nude or not, because of parental reactions afterward to him in Harry Potter . . . that is not what I was trying to convey. I think it is a great opportunity for Dan and I think he'll do a fantastic job, with or without clothing. But having read various articles about parental reactions to the books/movies because they are about witches and wizards, and about censorship in general, I do have a concern that some parents might jump onto the "Dan is a role model for our children" bandwagon and then threaten to boycott the films if he continues to play Harry's part. I'm not saying it's right or logical, just that it wouldn't surprise me if it happened. And if it does, I would desperately hope the decision makers for the movies would not let those opinions sway them in continuing to use Dan as Harry until the series ends (or that it would not make Dan decide he'd rather not continue as Harry). It would be a tragedy to lose him now.
You know, I really dont' think it's fair for everyone to be saying how it's going to ruin their image of Dan as Harry Potter. Duh, this is why he's doing it. No actor wants to be stuck in the same role for their entire career, he's proving to us that he has a wide range of acting ability. And as for him not doing HP after this, I think he still will. Because seriously how many kids and young teenagers are going to see this play? There is probably a rating on it that won't allow them in. And the people that do go see it will hopefully be mature enough to not sit there and giggle the entire time. I think that doing a nude scene this early might be a bad move, but it's not my life it's his. So we shouldn't be judging him, because he's his own person, and can make his own decisions. I will follow Dan into whatever HE wants to do, because that's what a loyal fan does. Lirael
dude,I heard that he will be acting sex maniac who is atracted by horse.IT'S SICK.
