In a new interview, Harry Potter director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves discuss the Half-Blood Prince movie. Kloves, the adapter of all but one Potter novel (Phoenix), writes first drafts that tend "to be both wishful and practical" in his desire to retain Rowling's details and plot twists. "Wishful in the sense that I want to get the entire book on the page and practical in the sense that I know the wishful side of me is insane." Prince presented challenges because of "a series of memories that inform the past and the present." While Yates "enjoyed the flashbacks enormously as separate incidents, he didn't feel they were satisfying within the whole. In other words, they diluted the dramatic experience from his point of view and he felt we needed to concentrate exclusively on those memories that informed one particular thread of the story - the story I was, by and large, telling." Thanks to everyone who emailed.

1st comment! :D Im glad about this because I prefer it when movies stick close to the books theyre of.

"Hes always been the funny one, but he has so much more as an actor than that. In Prince, he has lovely stuff thats funny and true, but in Deathly Hallows, he must be defensive and haunted, and Rupert took to that like a duck to water." Well Im glad theyre not just going to have him pigeonholed as the comic relief, even if it is only for the last few films!! Also, the quote about DH2 being epic and operatic gave me chills XD

Well all the memories are important as they all deal with horcruxes or Voldemort hiding horcruxes which comes into play in DHs, so Im not really sure I understand where Yates is coming from with those comments.

I look forward to see the result of the Yates/Kloves collaboration. I was displeased with the screenplay for OoP. That is not to say I didnt like the movie, I did but was certainly disappointed by the omissions. I hope that having Steve Kloves return will bring back the faithful adaptation of the books we all so love. It seems from the interview that the most important point to the movie makers is that the film stand on its own without much continuity regarding either the previous films or the book series. While we all understand it would be unprofitable for WB to stay true to the complete story line of the longer, later novels, it does not diminish my desire to SEE the entire story told as it was written. Unfortunately only the TRUE fan would be willing to sit through an 8 hour film.

I think they really do consider us fans greatly when writing these films, which Im very grateful for. Im fun with some memories being excluded, really. As long as it makes sense, Im happy. DH is going to be epic? Awesome!

Im glad to see they brought Kloves back but I still have reservations about leaving some memory scenes out. They are so very vital to the rest of Harrys story. It may be true that they are trying to let it stand on its own, but if the people watching it that have never read the books (and I know some) cannot make sense of what is happening than the movie in my opinion is a failure. That is one flaw Ive seen with some movie adaptations of books. IF the non-reader has to ask a person who has read the book about how something was possible (i.e. How did Lupin and Sirius know the map never lies?) than the screen writer, or the director, failed in properly conveying important points to the non-reader. My fear is that with how close they are saying DH is to the book that the loss of information through cutting important points in HBP will confuse the movie goer again. And as much as they may try to make each film to stand on its own, every piece, every book, every movie, gives information that leads to the final conclusion and if they have not been portrayed properly in the first films how will DH ever make sense to the movie watcher.

What exactly did this comment mean? He didnt like JKRs style? Or just thought it wouldnt film well? Did he lump all the scenes together, or just take some out?
