If anyone ever remembers that Jo said she started the idea for the story when she was in her teens. Now subtract her age (41) from what Harry is (26) and the answer is 15. If she came up with the idea at the age of 15 then technically Harry is 26 even though he is 17 when the book comes out. If you put some common sense to it, it isnt difficult to figure out.

To all the people who don't understand how Harry is 26: In CoS, it was Nearly Headless Nick's 500th Deathday. His cake said he died October 31, 1492. So CoS takes place in 1992. At this time Harry is 12, so he was born in 1980. 2006 minus 1980 is 26, and that is Harry's current age.
