And yes... this means Ben and I are going BACK ON TOUR this summer! Stay tuned for tour dates and locations!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

WE DON'T ACTUALLY THINK Harry should have died. Well, I don't, anyway. Ben does. But Ben is evil.

This is ONE VIEW that people hold. In the book, we reach the conclusion that Harry should have lived!

The title is a double entendre - it references the view some people hold, that Harry Potter (the character) should have died. It also speaks to those who thought Harry Potter (the buzz) should have died.

But Harry Potter didn't die. It didn't go away when DH came out. In coffee shops and on message boards, we're all still fiercely debating the most controversial issues.

We thought putting our extensive analysis in to book form was the best way to reach out to Harry Potter fans who haven't yet found their way onto MuggleNet (and don't listen to MuggleCast!).

So in this book, we discuss about what really happened, what could have happened, and what maybe should have happened.

UPDATE (June 11): IT'S IN STORES!!! You can pick it up at your local bookstore or you can order it on Amazon here! Go - do it!!

In related news, earlier this week, Gaby and I launched GivesMeHope.com (GMH) - "Like FMyLife, but for optimists!" It's a website where people share their most hopeful, uplifting moments. Or another way of saying it - it's a collection of "Bite-sized, Chicken Soup Stories for the Twitter Generation."

The response has been incredible. You guys did an AMAZING job spreading our message of hope - the website received 185,000 hits in its first 24 hours! Wow! We were voted the #1 story on Digg.com, ranked one of the "Top 10 Hottest Urls" of May 31st, and also got written up in several newspapers and magazines, including Esquire.com.

As I mentioned in my last post, GMH is a cause that I believe in so strongly, I'm going to donate every penny I receive in proceeds from the sale of our new book to promoting GMH.

I'm proud to announce today we have selected a charity to align the website with: GivesMeHope will be used exclusively to raise money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. It is consistently rated as one of the most efficient and effective charities, and I've seen the impact my local Boys and Girls Club has made in my community. It's definitely an organization whose mission is aligned with ours.

So, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU to everybody for all your support. I have read over 1000 of your stories, and I'm just brimming with hope and optimism for our future. As you can tell, I can't even contain my excitement. I hope you'll continue to visit the website, and help Gaby and I spread our message of hope! THANK YOU!!

EDIT: Thank you for all of the positive feedback on the book. We're so glad you guys enjoy it - we had a blast writing it!

Ah! Harry Potter should NOT have died. Lol. OMG I so want this book now...

Posted by w1nt3r5l0v3 May 5th 2009

My accusations of greed are kind of groundless, but you have to understand that's exatly what it looks like. The only part of this that really bothers me, other than there being no real need for a book like this, is that you say what "should" have happened. It makes it seem like you think you know what's better for the series than JKR does, and that's just ridiculous. Also, I feel it's time to let go of the Dumbledore being gay thing. Any fan who says she should have kept that to herself is missing the point of the entire series. She has said that in the end the books are a plea for tolerance. /rant.

sounds cool dude

i'm suprised so many people are so negative about this! i am so excited! please please come to either new jersey or new york city!!!!!!

Posted by fredrika_weasley May 5th 2009

I had a lot to say but now...I just think it shouldn't have been done. It's too soon. It seems like a ploy for money. The ideas are not new, nor are they original. There has been too much speculation over the years to pass off any theory as your own.

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers May 5th 2009

Thank you for clarifying that post Emerson. I feel a lot better about that now. I was planning on buying it anyway, but I am happy to know you dont think Harry should have died. And yes, Ben is evil. lol

Posted by riddleisourking May 5th 2009

The problem with this is, is that you guys have made 2 years of Podcasts. Even if Emerson and Ben are not regularly on the show, you put no disclaimer before the podcasts saying that you don't agree with the opinions stated. There has been so much talk and dissecting of the series, I just don't see the need for this. But this is a capitalistic country and you are going to capitalize in any way that it is legal for you to do so, so I can't really criticize here. But I just don't see how you can say anything in this book that hasn't already been discussed, and like someone said previously, is your opinion worth more than anyone else's? Just because you've run a website for 10 years doesn't make you more interested, more knowledgeable, or more of a fan than the millions of other HP fans out there. I'm not sure what you two graduated from Notre Dame with but unless it was in some sort of literary degree, I don't see how your opinion and book is really worth too much.

Posted by emma_sophia May 5th 2009

I hate to say it but the first thing I thought when I read this was "Great, another way for Ben and Emerson to make money" I feel as I can get as meaningful and interesting critique on Harry Potter forums, which are free. I have no problem with Ben and Emerson stating their opinions on the book, you don't have to be a literary critic to critique a book but this just seems like another money making scheme. I feel as if MN is becoming more and more about the money and less about the books we all love. I just got FIVE obnoxious popup ads, and whenever I visit the site, I always get at least three, there's an annoying video ad with audio which plays automatically and is really annoying. Thats sort of off topic, but I fail to see why I should pay to read your opinions about book seven if I can listen to a podcast, visit a fan forum or read an online essay for free with just as meaningful discussion.

Posted by kokoro_ravenclaw May 5th 2009

Personally, I have to admit that I won't be buying this book either. I'm not sure what the initiative behind this novel is from Ben or Emerson (money/pasion or neither) but at the end of the day, it's nothing new, and nothing more than a playground discussion about our personal "opinions" on the ending of the series we all hold dear; the discussions that were settled long ago now. This is badly timed, too. Die-hard fans (aka Mugglenetters etc, generally) don't want to read a book about the flawed choices of the author, or things that would've been BETTER - it's tarnishing what is already whole and adored regardless, and even if someone doesn't like how the series ended or some choices of JK, who cares? She's the writer! She chooses how it ends, and everyone has to either hate/love/like it, but they have no say about changing it. It is how it is. Harry shouldn't have died, the title is offensive and abrupt to JK and fans in general, and don't get me started about "we're all still fiercely debating the most controversial issues." Controversial issues? FIERCELY debating? Plot-twists of fiction are hardly controversial issues, and even if they managed an epic scale of arguement would they honestly STILL be being debated in "coffee shops"? The ending has concluded the series. It's finished. It's completed. There's no more theorizing and guesswork - it's all set in stone and the quicker people learn to accept that, love it or hate it, they'll understand that a book like this is only going to jeopardize the series, the author and the fans. Harry shouldn't have died - Why, you ask? BECAUSE JK DECIDED HE WOULDN'T. The End, Goodnight.

Posted by BeeHermione May 5th 2009

... the title still kind of upsets me. ... but that's okay, i guess.

Posted by Plotter May 5th 2009

Everyone lighten up. Don't judge a book by its cover.

Posted by jojoinpink54 May 5th 2009

Ah man i thought it was ok at first and now i read all these comments and i'm sorta depressed by them... now i don't know WHAT i think... oh dear...

Posted by hptwilighter May 5th 2009

EPIC TITLE! 27 Days!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by hpfan4444 May 5th 2009

Ok, I really like the tittle of this book. I really like Emerson's reasoning behind it too. Also, for all of you who wish that you didn't hear that Dumbledore was gay, its not a big deal AND its not like JKR woke up one morning saying "I want to pull Dumbledore out of the closet". She was asked a DIRECT QUESTION on Dumbledore's love life, and she hasn't lied to us on character information yet.

Posted by hpfan4444 May 5th 2009

Stop being negitive! This is Benerson "rideng the cash cow" relax!

looks controversial and AMAZING! you guys it should be on the bestseller list! go for it people! have they written anything besides this and the 'what is gonna happen in hp7'? I DON'T think harry should have died i bawled my eyes out anyway can you imagine what i would've been like if he died? I probly would have died. did anyone honestly think he was going to die when you picked up the book though? i was so convinced when i read it but... not when i first picked up the book

Blatant cashing in ploy, nothing more. Revisionist books are always stupid anyways, who cares what could have happened, it didn't, get over it. This site is dead.

hahaha!! This would be a massive spoiler for those poor muggles who wants to wait for the movie Emerson and Ben!!!!! I can picture my friends seeing this book and go "NOOOO!!!!"

Posted by acciocaitlin May 6th 2009

Oh, I can't wait! I enjoy reading books that analyse the series, and while it does seem like you 'cashing in' on the series (hey, you've got to pay for your wedding somehow!), how many other authors have done so? I'll definitely be buying it when it comes to Australia- but first I have to find your pre-book7 book!

Posted by HPmgFan62442 May 6th 2009

I made a fan reaction video so we can talk about it on youtube too! (It's still processing right now, but by the time you click this it should be all done :) ) I'm not normally so fangirl-like, but for the sake of the video I got a little excited ahhaha ok, so here, click (You may have seen my past HP vids under the account kiten2cat12345, but I posted this on my new account) http://www.yo utube.com/watch?v=J2iqCg1 c7mE

Posted by NicoleM May 6th 2009

I will never look at Ben the same way again. Just kidding--sorta! =) Anyway, not completely sure if I will buy this book. I really don't want to read why people think Harry should have died, whether the popularity or Harry himself.

Posted by gmc May 6th 2009

Who would buy this? The title is stupid, almost as dumb as Dumbledore Is Alive. Harry deserves to live, thrive and survive with Ginny by his side.

Posted by ginmo May 6th 2009

I was very pleased with how JKR ended the series. He kinda did get a death scene, no matter how you look at it... he saw beyond the physical world. Therefore, he saw death. All I wanted was to prove to people that Harry was a horcrux and he had to die SOME WAY to get rid of it. Technically, he did, but because Voldemort used his blood he got a second chance at life if he decided to live it. Which, he did, so he was placed back into his mortal body. I loved that. Because I knew Harry had to die... I just didn't want him too... but I knew he had to be "dead" at some point to get rid of the horcrux. So she ended it perfectly! :D

Posted by ginmo May 6th 2009

Another thing... I think the title is really rude because what if there is some person in the bookstore, wanting to start reading the series, but then they see this mugglenet book beside them that says "HARRY POTTER SHOULD HAVE DIED!" ....you might as well be those idiots at the midnight releases who shouted out endings... AND writing books like this will just make those Harry Potter haters justify their reasoning for hating the series... because if die hard fans are even nit picking at the brilliant work of JKR, then surely it's a flawed story. That's how a lot of people think.

Posted by swans_rule_the_afl May 6th 2009

Yay yay yay yay YAY Oh My GOSH this has made me SOOO happy and EXCITED! :D (Forgive the caps. It was justified).

Posted by iwantorlando05 May 6th 2009

If you think about it...Harry (the character) did die...sort of. But I'm still so excited. I read the first book like 3 times while I was waiting for Deathly Hallows to come out. :D

Posted by Harry_Potter_Prince May 6th 2009

Ok, so let me get this twisted theory straight. First, Rowling kills Hedwig, and then Mad-eye, and people think, "Alright, that is understandable. Of course he dies," and then she kills Dobby, and people think, "A plot twist, darn she's good", soon after, Lupin and Tonks name Harry godfather to Teddy, foreshadowing their deaths. We think, "She's very skilled to write like this, and foreshadow something ominous. Fred dies, and people start an uproar, "WHAT THE *cesored.* Snape dies, and most think, "As expected, but you can quit it now." She didnt listen, she kept going. Very soon after, as sleuths knew would happen after Lupin announced Harry godfather, Lupin and Tonks die. People think "ok, ok, we get it. You killed them, and many other important charactes. Drop it." But no! She kills Colin next! And people ask "WHY! What- was- the- POINT!" To this day, I ask myself that question! Kill anyone. You already killed enough, but to kill Fred and Colin is crossing the line! WOW! And now... to make matters more hilarious, we ask, "Hey, why didnt Harry die?" We accepted Dobby, Mad-eye, and Lupin and Tonks because they were simple to predict. Of course Dobby would give his life. He proved it time and again before. Mad-eye is a hero, and lived his part. Lupin and Tonks died because Teddy was meant to be an orphan. Another orphan story. Snape died because he had to. He was a spy. I knew he would from book 6. But Fred and Colin? Fred was too good, and a twin! Colin was pointless to kill WHY? I have a question Why DID more than five die. NOT including Hedwig. The seventh book had seven significant deaths in it. Mad-eye, Dobby, Fred, Snape, Lupin, Tonks, Colin. Was that supposed to be symbolic? She could've killed Lavender, Cho, Susan, Hannah. All of which could've replaced the deaths of Fred and Colin nicely, but NO! Why didnt Harry die? Why, oh why, oh why, do people want more deaths?

Posted by Harry_Potter_Prince May 6th 2009

Ah hem. Sorry for my madness. I am not usually like this. But... I had 2 get this out of my system. It's been boiling up for two years. I just think the deaths of Fred and Colin were pointless, and two of my favorite characters. I hardly think Harry should've died, but we do have freedom of speech, and Emerson and Ben have the right 2 analyze and discuss. Emerson already said he doesnt thik Harry should have died, but he nonetheless worked with Ben on the book, on something he didnt agree with. Because the book is a discussion and an analysis. Not an essay imposing other views on people. So every1, calm down, (not that I can talk, huh?) I find it cool that Emerson could cooperate with someone who has different views than him.

Posted by Roxy2005 May 6th 2009

I will be more willing to buy this one then the first, as I did not want any influance of my reading of book 7, but now that it i s all said and done, this might be a fun way to keep going with the HP stuff while we wait for film 6 and Book 7 part one and two to come out. Thanks guys. LOL, Emerson your funny saying Ben was evil because he wanted Harry to die. I believe lots of people thought he might. I for one was not sure but was pleased how everything turned out.

Posted by jojoinpink54 May 6th 2009

I agree that I obviously was super sad when the characters died, but like you said, some were at least understandable. JKR says that sometimes it cannot always be who you'd expect to die--sometimes it pr,eys on just another average person... So I guess she was teaching a lesson but it is still sad :-(

Posted by sevviesnapples May 6th 2009

Harry_Potter_Prince: The book is already published, and so as you read it, it's already set in stone. DH also tells of war, and INNOCENT PEOPLE die in war. Colin didn't save himself, he chose to fight like an honorable Gryffindor and man. The Weasley family is a big family, as well. One of them would have to end up dying, I kind of knew that but didn't want to accept it. If you have read Holocaust books, you realize that it doesn't matter if they were a hero or not, if they were good-looking or loved by many fans. In reality, anyone could've died, and JKR put it how it would be. I'm not saying I /wanted/ Lupin or Snape or Fred to die, of course not.

Posted by steampunk May 6th 2009

Harry_Potter_Prince: I think the whole point was that death isn't fair and it doesn't have any "lines" to cross as such. Everyone who died was fighting a war and I think the amount of deaths and the characters Jo chose to die were to emphasise the fact that war isn't kind. As for the book...well... I think kokoro_ravenclaw's views are pretty close to my own. Sorry, but I'm not interested in hearing other people's views on the last book. It was good enough for me and that's all that matters... to me, obviously.

Posted by Snape_Maverick May 6th 2009

Congratulations on the Book! I find it highly amusing that so many people are dissing it without reading one page of it. It's a free country so please don't buy it if you don't want it. But you may be missing out on something special. The last word has not been written on the Harry Potter books, and clearly people still have strong opinions about Deathly Hallows. After thousands of pages there is alot to talk about. Criticism has a place in literature, too, and it's actually a compliment to JKR that people find her characters so fascinating and controversial.

Posted by Nimbuschick May 6th 2009

If Harry just plain lived, I'd have been upset, but Harry surviving "dying" was poetic. It was set up from the start of the series, and it drew it together and a really cool Christian Allegory so I can fight back the book burners with it.

Posted by HPfanatic84 May 6th 2009

Hahahaha... based on the title alone, I almost died! I'm glad you explained further in the rest of the post! haha. This book sounds like it'll be really interesting to read!

Posted by Carlikinz May 6th 2009

When on tour please come to New England. Boston or something would be fantastic! and i cant wait to get this lovely novel (:

Posted by Luke May 6th 2009

I'm moving to Leaky too. At least Melissa is an actually talented writer- I loved her book. Wonder what she thinks of this? I'll go and see.

Posted by lunacarrow May 6th 2009

I didn't pick up the first one, but this one strikes me as very interesting. I;ve always been a fan of the whole, "what would you have done", or the "what could have been done better" discussions, so I might pick this one up.
