Coverage: JKR's first charity reading
MuggleNet was in attendance earlier tonight at the first of two charity readings co-hosted by JK Rowling. The show opened up with celebrity actress Whoopi Goldberg praising children for their interest in reading. Next, actress Kathy Bates provided a detailed introduction for Stephen King. She talked about her obsession with King, along with the roles she's played in his film adaptations.

A surprise appearance by Jon Stewart stoked the crowd up when he came on stage to introduce JK Rowling. Typical Jon Stewart, in his speech, he described how his five-month-old son has been standing outside of a bookstore waiting for Book 7 for three months now. At the end of his speech, he said he should be sitting out there with all of us.

With that said, a video to introduce Jo had her in her home holding a yellow portfolio. In it, she said, was the final chapter of Book 7. "I feel like the camera will be able to see right through this if it's too close," she remarked.

A gigantic standing ovation met Jo as she walked out onto the stage in her special high-heels (with a snake on each). With the warm welcome out of the way, she grabbed her US paperback copy of Half-Blood Prince and began reading at the part where Dumbledore takes Harry back in time to when he originally found Tom Riddle.

After reading, Jo took five or six questions from the audience. The first one asked what Hermione would see in the Mirror of Erised, to which Jo replied she would probably see Voldemort dead, and herself and Ron living happily ever after. Another question had Jo responding that we'll find out more about how potions and the connection between a wand and a wizard work in Book 7.

Tomorrow we will have a report on night two of An Evening with Harry, Carrie, and Garp!

Great stuff here, but what about the other questions? What did the others ask or are they unimportant ones?

Posted by randomchat Aug 2nd 2006

Wow. I want to know. Arg, I hate mysteries.

Posted by nala12317 Aug 2nd 2006

wow sounds like a lot of fun! Kim- where were the "there/their/they're" typos in there? i didn't see any... or maybe i just missed them...

Posted by daaawlish Aug 2nd 2006

The Hermione thing contradicts what Melissa posted on Leaky, she said Jo said she'd see herself with Ron...

Posted by iluvharry1017 Aug 2nd 2006

Wow Jo is awsome for helping charities and providing fans with an unforgetable night! I wish I could have been there to hear her answer the questions and read from HBP. If only someone managed to get that yellow portfolio.....

Posted by Abigail Aug 2nd 2006

Er ... Jon Stewart described how his 5-MONTH-old son has been standing outside of a bookstore for three months waiting for Book 7?? That's one child prodigy, that is! :-)

Posted by mvenus929 Aug 2nd 2006

As I understand it, JKR also talked about how Hermione would see herself "her body being entwined with that of a certain young man"... To which she heard a lot of cheering about shipping. She was also asked about the possiblity of redemption of Snape and Draco and others, and said every character has the possibility of being redeemed, but she wouldn't say anything about whether or not anyone will or will not be. And that Harry would see that Draco wouldn't have murdered DD. Another question was why she gave Ollivander the wand cores that she did, and she responded that those were simply her favorites. She was asked how she knew when to stop writing and replied with something along the lines of 'I always knew, and wanted to leave it at a high point', but that she has so many loose ends to tie up that she might leave so much hanging for fans to beg for an 8th book. Asked if she ever wanted to give up because of the rejections and replied no, that she'd probably be writing it anyone even if everyone refused her. She was asked how the internet age affected her, and she reponded that she didn't know until a few years ago when she googled HP and was astounded at the result. Thought it was fair to let everyone that didn't get a chance to go know everything she said, instead of just a few snipets. And no, I didn't go... my boyfriend went and described everything in detail to me.

jo is totally cool. top 20!

Posted by iluvharry Aug 2nd 2006

COOL!!! COOL!! COOL!!!! She had the last chapter of book seven!!! AAHH!! the suspense!!! MUST-FIND-OUT-WHAT'S-IN-YELLOW-FOLDER!! ;) P.S. LOL, Abigail!! Still, five years, (that IS what he meant, isn't it? :) )that is still kinda young. My sister's five and every time I try to read her one of the books she sort of listens. For the first five minutes, until she gets bored. So much for getting her addicted young. :)

Hey there Mugglenetters (in particular Emerson, who I promised I'd post his autograph on EBay :P ) I have a few pictures..I'll see if I can post them up tomorow. I also took a very short video clip of Jo reading..but don't know if that was allowed hehe. Anywho, the event was wonderful, all the guest celebrities were brilliant...for all those that missed it, I'm sorry for you :P I'll be at the B & N event tomorow at Union Square (it is tomorow right? I forgot what time!) I'll see you all there : ) Vanessa-The Not so Big Emerson Fangirl :P

Posted by Boo_On_You Aug 2nd 2006

I always pictured Hermione seeing her future or Ron in the mirror.

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe Aug 2nd 2006

Hey thanks mvenus for the update - Green Equinox PLEASE post video on youtube and send a link to mugglenet.com, aswell with pictures. I'm sure i speak for everyone when we'd love to see them! > About hermione seeing herself and ron, well I always thought Hermione might see something a bit more "mature" i guess instead of just her and ron, when another one of her friends who is just as important as ron could die at any moment. I would like to hear that she would see everyone she cares about alive and voldy dead

Posted by x2pttrclue32 Aug 2nd 2006

Pretty cool! I so wish I could've been there!

Posted by Hope_Lee Aug 2nd 2006

It was great! Sat next to the girl who asked the wand core question (Hi Sam!!) and did get to ask Stephen my question, though the stinker didn't really answer it. What an unforgettable night! Cab fare from Penn to Radio City Music Hall: $10.00....Tickets to "An Evening with Harry, Carrie and Garp": $60.00.....Having Jo Rowling look at you from 10 feet away and smile: Priceless!!!!!!!

Posted by iheartmugglecast Aug 2nd 2006

Sounds awesome hope you guys had lots of fun!!!

Posted by broadwayybabe Aug 2nd 2006

ohh my gosh! I wish I could have been there!!!!!! This upsets Harmony shippers....

Posted by VickyMalfoy Aug 2nd 2006

For the record... I was the one who shouted "Happy Birthday" when JKR came on stage and then later when she was talking about shipping i said "harry/luna"... also with the Hermione question with the mirror of erised JKR said " She would probably be seen entwined with...well im sure you know" she is such a classy woman. I really admire her.

Posted by mugglehp Aug 2nd 2006

Posted by Pearlinbloom Aug 2nd 2006

OMG! I wish I had been there! It sounds like soo much fun! Oh, and not that it matters but, Jon Stewart has a 5 month old daughter, not 5 month old son. lol funny image though of a baby waiting for book 7.

Posted by Brendaisrupertsgurl Aug 2nd 2006

cool!!!! need to find out whats in that folder, need to know!!!!! need TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! TELLL ME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by the_chosen_girl Aug 2nd 2006

Yay! I was the one who asked the question about what Hermione would see if she looked into the Mirror of Erised. Jo said specifically that she would she her, Ron, and Harry safe and unscathed after the war, AND she would probably see her entwined with Ron.

Posted by crazy_ned Aug 2nd 2006

Wand and a wizard, eh?

Posted by sugarquill Aug 2nd 2006

coooooooooool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOR MERLIN'S SAKE, WHEN ARE WE GOING TO KNOW THE TITLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Posted by lemondrop89 Aug 2nd 2006

First off Jon Stewart is hilarious! I really really liked Jo's answer to Hermione's Mirror, I was like awwww. I love Jo! She is the most incredible writer and a really awesome person. I wish she would have released the title of Book 7 at the conference. It's looking really unlikely for a 2007 release now, if you look at the past books. the title was released a year before the book was. But I wouldn't mind a 2008 release either. I wish I was there though. New York gets everything. Does anyone know if Lumos travels? Or is it in Vegas every year?

Posted by basteed Aug 2nd 2006

Damn sam, I'm so sad I couldn't go. I'm only over in CT, and I told my parents about it, but got the silence and change of subject that clearly said, "That's great, but we're not going." I so wish I could've been there, and I can't believe Jon Stewert was there!! Ahhhhh, I'm jealous, sounds like it was really great! I hope Snape and Draco are redeemed in Book 7. I think she's hinting that they will be. :-P

Posted by nomarscharm5 Aug 2nd 2006

The Daily Show is my second favorite obsession. I would have died to be there!

Posted by ConCon Aug 2nd 2006

That's soooo cool! I also want to know what the title is for book 7!!! Go Jo!!

Posted by hannibal_lecter Aug 2nd 2006

I was there It was awesome!!!!!!!!!!! Jo said that we would find out a lot more about wands in book 7. I saw Ben outside the door of radio city music hall after the reading!

Posted by poprocks727 Aug 2nd 2006

omfg!!!!! i sooooo wish i was there.. i live a few states over, tho, and my parents werent too hyped on the idea of a road trip. gosh... and jon stewart is hilarious..! i think the world hates me. if only i was 2 years older so i could drive myself there!!!! damn u Age-Limit!!!!!!

Posted by asia_canada Aug 2nd 2006

aw.. i wish i had been there.. i wanna read the last chapter of book 7... i wanna read the enitre book... aww... hermione n ron living happily ever after... does that mean that harry won't live? or does she just mean that hermione's in love with ron, lol.. not like that's news to anyone

Posted by the_chosen_girl Aug 2nd 2006

Jo said that Hermione would probably see the war over, all three of them safe and she would be closely entwined with a certain person (Ron) IF she looked in the Mirror of Erised. Therefore it doesn't have any relevance to book 7 except that that is her deepest desire.

Posted by FaithInSnape Aug 2nd 2006

Hermione 'entwined' with Ron? Whoa. LOL Also...I have to say my ears perked up (or should I say my eyes? O.o) at this: "Another question had Jo responding that we'll find out more about how potions and the connection between a wand and a wizard work in Book 7." ...EEEEP! I wonder if like Snape had given Voldemort some kind of potion that helped create the Priori Incantatem!? You know Snape has to be involved SOMEHOW with the word "potion" stuck in there! EEEEE! lol

Posted by dreamy_leo Aug 2nd 2006

I do love this stage of her writing the books because this is when she starts giving out clues about what will happen and tells us things that we are going to find out about. It's very exciting. It makes me Harry-hungry.

Posted by DecemberDrops Aug 2nd 2006

You know what really made me laugh was when a girl from the audience shouted, "Don't kill Harry!". Everyone seemed to agree with the plea . . . if she kills Harry I don't know what the heck I'll do with myself. :o(

Posted by the_chosen_girl Aug 2nd 2006

Haha, I loved the people who yelled out. Like when JKR was talking about odd couplings that she has seen online and someone shouted out "Harry/ Voldemort!" That made me laugh so hard. It was an AMAZING night!

Posted by DecemberDrops Aug 2nd 2006

Hey, the_chosen_girl, be sure to tell your friends you're getting all this attention for you question; I loved it! It was wonderful to know what Hermione would see in the mirror. I thought you sounded very clever, and thanks for asking her!

Posted by hpfangurlrox Aug 2nd 2006

John stewart presented jo I was holding every breath! Thennnn..I was quite agitated....I know..I am sensitive.. Urgggghhh! There’s this reporter and he asked Jo about why not make adult books of Hp? And jo was like How do u know that he’s still going to be alive? I was like wtf! But...okay I remained calm...no throwing of shoes and cursing loudly... Jo read the “Secret riddle” chapter in HBP...lol I brought my HBP! So u can imagine how wild I reacted! Then people were asking questions..I love the father’s speech..but yea andrew the daughter’s was like a total disappointment! And yes as Jo states “Hermione will be entwined with another character!” and that is obviously RON! So stop it Harry and hermione shippers! There is NO way in the world that harry and hermione will get together! It is H and R!
