I have some very exciting news!
Everybody has heard of FMyLife.com, where people post stories ("FMLs") about the event that completely ruined their day. FML is one of the top 300 sites on the internet, and it has one million followers on Facebook.
FML is hilarious. But as fun as it can be hearing about people's misfortunes, it can be a downer.
So I, along with my like-minded HTML-literate lifemate Gaby Montero from DailyCute.net, decided to create the anti-FML: GMH - GivesMeHope.com
On GMH, people share with the world their most hopeful, uplifting moments and allow others to draw strength from their experiences.
Here are a few examples that tugged at my heartstrings and filled me up with hope for the future:
---
Four years ago, I tried to kill myself by swallowing a bottle of painkillers. My online friend, who I'd never met, was the only person who knew. He called 911, they pumped my stomach to save my life. Today, I got my bachelor's degree in sociology. I'm starting grad school in August. GMH
Freshman year, there was a crippled girl bound to a wheelchair. For 4 years, she did physical therapy and progressed to crutches. When we graduated a few weeks ago, she handed her crutches to an officer and walked across the entire stage. The applause from the seniors was deafening. She cried the whole way. GMH
Two years ago, my husband and I were planning to get divorced. My mother was dying of ovarian cancer and didn't know we were separating. Her last wish was for us to work out our problems and not get divorced, so we agreed we had to at least try. I've never been happier. I've never looked back. GMH
For years, I have been donating $10/month to sponsor YMCA memberships for poor kids, but never seeing the results. Then during a basketball game I coached, one kid asked if he could play just the second half. I asked why. "Because my brother is wearing the shoes." His brother is on the on the other team. They share one pair of shoes. GMH
----
I don't know how big GMH can get. But with all the suffering and misery in the world, I believe GMH has the potential to be a much-needed source of hope and inspiration. GMH is a breath of fresh air from the negativity of the mainstream media and dealing with life's hassles.
It's like Chicken Soup for the Soul - the 21st Century, Twitter-style version.
I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is. GMH a cause I believe in strongly, and I will do whatever it takes to get the word out about this resource. I am going to donate every penny I receive from sales of MuggleNet's new book to raise awareness of GMH.
I need your help. If this is a cause you believe in, please take 17 seconds and click here to digg it! (You can now log in using your facebook account.) If enough people digg it, and we get it on the front page, it will get tons of exposure.
Props to Ben for the tech assistance. On a side note, now that I'm done with school, I'll have more time to work on MuggleNet!
Thanks, guys. If you enjoy GMH, please spread the word and tell all your friends and family! I really hope you find the stories as inspirational as I do!
UPDATE: News is spreading like WILDFIRE! It's now the #1 STORY on digg.com - ROCK ON, fellow optimists!!

Wow! great Idea! Im gonna go Tweet the link 4 this!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 19:48:58
@Fia I think hes referring more to the fact that the sales of the book is being donated back to GMH, which isnt a charity.

Amazing idea! Great job! Ill do my best to help spread the word.

This is a cool idea, Emerson!! I bought the new book yesterday and its really good and hilarous as well! Im glad the profits are going to promoting a positive site :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 20:04:19
Emerson, this is incredible. Its so great to see someone making such a positive impact- I visited the site and it really uplifts me. Keep up the fantastic work :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 20:11:10
This is such a great idea!! I dont know why the people who created the other site didnt do this instead. I know if Im having a bad day...Im not going to want to read about other peoples misfortunes...that would just bring me down even more. But this idea is BRILLIANT!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 20:21:59
what a great idea! congratulations!! :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 20:46:48
LOVE IT!!! Will you make a fan page on Facebook? I can definitely do some PR for it :o)

Good idea. LOVE EMERSON. :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:03:55
This is sooo much better than FML...
people always go on it to make themselves feel better about themselvs, but does hearing about others misfortunes really help?
Uplifting stories give you hope and its really worth reading- This was an awesome idea
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:16:12
i dont like this website, because it reminds me of how much my life sucks.
fml reminds me of how good my life is.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:18:30
Emerson is such a good guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And clearly he found a good girl in Gaby. He is awesome and generous!!! I dont have a facebook or twitter but if I did I would totally help out and I might get a face book soon, then I totally will!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Is it bad that I still heart FML and think it is hilarious!!) But ya you guys rock!!!! :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:20:31
Great Idea! Its cool that we can go to a site and see uplifting stories too. But I wouldnt really say FML is negative (well.. I guess it kinda is) but its more that its funny, like Americas funniest home videos and other reality TV shows, its just funny to watch even though it is kinda negative.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:21:04
I blogged about it on my Confessions of a Bookworm blog and told my readers to blog about it too. No one spreads word faster than bloggers ;oD
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:21:04
I agree with L1keastarrxx. Reading those 3 or 4 uplifting stories made me feel like crap. How does a story about poor kids make you happy? FML is purely a site to show people that there are worst things that could happen and that your life doesnt completely suck.
And I also agree with john789 because the proceeds arent going to a charity or an organization, unless you call it the Emerson-Needs-More-Money Org. If you really want to uplift people Emerson, send the money to someone OTHER than yourself!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:22:59
Emersons now donating money to HIMSELF. Quite the worthy cause. Just be honest and say youve thought of a new way to make a bit of money through advertising, just like here on Mugglenet. Emerson sure does like the green bills, but he doesnt like talking about it all that much.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:28:29
Awww those storys are so nice to hear! It is true, though, that all we seem to hear about these days is how bad everything in the world is going, and it can really make you feel down if you get too into it. Great idea Emerson and Gabby!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:30:38
this is absolutely AWESOME. :D
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:40:14
You guys, get a grip... he wasnt going to donate the money to a charity in the first place, but now hes putting into an uplifting website. how is that bad? Its not like hes tricking people into thinking its a charity. anyway, I think its a great idea.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 21:43:02
I think this is a great idea, i personally find it uplifting and very nice to read. Keep up the good work.

this site will definitely brighten up my day.
another wonderful website idea, im sure everyone will soon be quoting from it.!

Wow, this is amazing!! All the recent comments have been praising Emerson and the GMH website!!! What I find weird, though, is that it takes about 10 minutes for a bunch to come through. Looks like someone is editing the comments....
|

That is an amazing idea. Best of luck with this new project.

I think this is a great project. I follow FML and I will also follow GMH. Go Emerson!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 22:15:38
Emerson, You have done it again. Thank you.
I have enjoyed Mugglenet all during a horrible marriage, this was the place I turned for relief and distraction at the end of a hard day. Now there will be somewhere new and wonderfully amazing to turn for hope - I love it . thanks again.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 23:05:38
This is a wonderful effort. Most every media source only follows crime, sleaze, and nastiness. I find this uplifting idea. As for the nayssayers, I am continually amazed by the younger generation ( that my generation many times trivialzes) (note the screen name ) being so amazing to me with both their highs.( this idea ) and lows ( those who try to sneer at such an effort) . Also, i weep for those who think that Shitehead is an actual word... LOL. Keep up the good vibes

We need to start a Twitter hash-tag for this!!! like #givesmehope go Tweet it!!!

Just seen this on the DIGG front page! You should eventually make a iPhone app like the FML people have..
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 23:30:18
ABOUT TIME. Ive been waiting for something like this for a while. Im glad youre the one to do it emerson!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-30 23:40:20
Wow even my comments got deleted......wow what happened to freedom of speech? This is worse than the daily prophet while it was controlled by the Death Eaters.
I guess all we are saying is that Emerson should stop using the word "Donation" when in reality all he is doing is investing on HIMSELF......send the mugglenet book profits to darfur or something worthy that helps or country or world.
|

the site is great! i just posted one :)

I decided to check out FML tonight just for the heck of hit. Best FML EVER:
Today, I dropped my keys. Not wanting to lean over and pick them up, I pointed at them and said "Accio." Then I realized I had tried to use a Harry Potter spell in real life and in public. FML

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 01:45:16
whoa.. this is a great idea,, i agree w/ iwantorlando,, why didnt the FML makers make GMH instead? im a very optimistic person although many bad things happen to me.. but i think something like "my day wasnt so good because..." and then "...but i am so thankful still.." would be greater and more inspiring! okay, where should we put that? FML or GMH? lol.. although i think some people in FML posted just funny ones jus like what CALLMEMORGAN said.. lol, that was s0o funny..

I like this idea. It has the potential to be cheesy but I think Emerson is talented enough to make it sincere. I support it.
I dont get the comments regarding how hes paying for it. I think its very generous of him to spend the money from his book on the website... and if its an investment, its a smart move. He never said anything about "charity," the money that he makes from his book is well-earned (because of the work it took to write the book and sell it maybe?) and most people would not have the foresight to immediately invest it into something that will be beneficial to a lot of people, regardless of whether or not Emerson makes money off of it (which, again, he should, because building the website will take work, and we live in a capitalist society where if you dont get paid for your work, you will be homeless).
I guess a good lesson here is to not share how youre paying for things because people take it the wrong way?
On another note, Harry Potter is way better than Twilight, snapeward777 ;)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 02:05:46
and yeah, i forgot to say, snapeward777, youre better off if you didnt remember your username b/c saying "twilight eclipsed HP" is not a very good idea here.. they are two completely different topics and if you dont agree and you think twilight is better than HP.. well.. i dont wanna say bad things.. this is just not the place to post that.. =)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 02:21:09
Is there a GMH Twitter account? I think this is a really good idea, btw ^_^
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 03:11:23
Amen Emerson! I think FML is a horrible site. Whats truly appalling is the comments people leave on the postings. These people have horrible stories and then other people bash them even further. How refreshing to have a site like this. I just hope the other negative people in the world dont try and bring it down.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 03:54:37
Congratulations to you and Gaby, Emerson, this is a great idea!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 04:39:08
hmmm I think snapeward777 was just trying to say that twilight eclipsed HP for himself and thats what hes been paying attention to lately... so hes fine. anyways, yea I think this is a good idea (though granted I dont know much about the site itself) But I can definitely see that Emerson wasnt planning on this from the beginning... and Im sure his intentions are true. This isnt about his own selfish marketing, especially since ALL is being donated, not like most companies you see out there just giving partial. Good job! :D
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 06:26:18
Thats a great idea, Emerson!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 06:33:55
Has anyone heard of postsecret? I for one think its along the same lines and very hopeful as well. look it up, people send in their secrets anonymously via postcards, artistic and expressive! POSTSECRET check every sunday for new ones!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 07:38:33
While its a pretty cool idea and I dont want to be THAT person, I think you guys have missed the whole point behind FML. Its FML that gives people hope and makes them feel better because no matter how bad of a day youre having you can always go on that site and think Well at least I didnt lock my keys inside my car while it was still running. GMH would just make me depressed. Like lets say Im 30, Ive been workinh three jobs, living in a dirty apartment in a neighborhood where theres a lot of crime and Ive been trying to finish university at the same time. Now I find out that my tuition fees are all going up and theres nothing I can do. But hey guess what? On this GMH site I read that someone from Nicaragua got lucky with a scholarship. Wow thats nice. Wish someone would give me a scholarship or financial support - that sure gives me hope. So like I said, cool idea but I think its more of a site that makes you feel better about humanity in general like those Chicken Soup for the Soul books.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 08:13:03
No offense or anything.......but I thought that this was a Harry Potter site! I personally dont give a blue fudge about any of this!
|

lol callmemorgan! thats hilarious. and nice idea, emerson. you cant have too much of a good thing. (:

WTF does this have to do with Harry Potter?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 09:25:37
Sites like this already exist: Try www.mylifeisg.com or www.lmylife.com . Sorry MuggleNet, but your unoriginal idea is unoriginal.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 09:41:40
Thats an amazing idea!! =D
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 10:01:21
I love the idea, but, seriously, FMyLife helps me feel better about my own life. And it provides entertainment.
So, yeah, Ill probably stick to FML, but only because Im a pessimist.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 10:17:55
Thats so cool! Ill definitely buy the book, for my enjoyment and GMH.com.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 10:18:19
I absolutely LOVE. THIS. IDEA. I am SOO happy that someone thought of this. Its absolutely beautiful. I almost cried. No lie. Overdramatic, but you are GREAT for doing this. Bless you ;)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 10:47:33
well I didnt find that story very uplifting, i was kinda depressed. by how there are people who have NO shoes, when I have 3 pair, and I was just complaining the other day about how I ONLY had 3 pairs..... hmm.
|

Emerson, you are a genius
I remember reading Mugglenet when you graduated high school, and now here we are and youre done with college, and Ive just got one more year of high school. It feels good to know some things dont change, Mugglenets a constant, the HP community is always there, and we dont just dress up like wizards, we do things like The Harry Potter Alliance for Darfur, Teddy Bears for Hope, and now this. We are a truly fascinating group, and I feel blessed to be a part of it.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 13:31:40
Mugglenet.com has been my homepage for a long time now. GivesMeHope is not my homepage. Thought Id let you know.
Also, my sister keeps trying to get me to go to FML. I think Ill stick to GMH.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 13:32:13
This actually reminds me a lot of a response a friend of mine had to the whole FML craze. She started posting stories about the little everyday things that made her smile, and called it YML (Yay my life!)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 13:40:15
Honestly, FML isnt really a downer for me. It make me laugh when something bad happens cause it could ALWAYS be worse. I guess GMH is nice idea but I feel like the things on there are just so cheesy. Like the one about the girls mother who was murdered and she wasnt popular but she got a standing ovation at graduation or something? Honestly, that doesnt give me hope. If I was actually there, it would be great and wonderful, but reading about it in like two-three sentences just makes it lose something. Like the story about the kid with the shoes... I dont know, it make me depressed that while some people have closets full of shoes, two kids have to share. I guess in a way it gives me hope that kids are nice and kind, but that doesnt really seem to be the point. I feel like the Chicken Soup books work cause theyre actual stories and you feel a connection with the people and those stories really do give me hope. I dunno... maybe Im just a horrible pessimist, but for now Im gonna have to agree with one of the things on GMH- "Today, I found GMH, and I realized I like FML better. FML"
Also I cant help but think that this money would be better served with donating to Save Darfur and UNICEF or Heifer or countless other really good organizations. What about First Book? My mom is the director of a non profit where they help people get their GED and they might have to close because of the lack of funding. Im sure some local organization (wherever Emerson lives) would be incredibly grateful to have even 100 dollars from Emerson.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 13:44:54
those stories really make you think
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 13:49:51
What the hell is this you guys? A COMMENT GOT REMOVED because it was bashing Emersons idea. Freedom of speech has been breached and you little Emerson zombies who munch mindlessly on anything he throws out there would rather drool over this pseudo nonsense "give me hope". Listen, Im all for hope and good deeds but I think its rather pathetic when people actually need a website to make them feel better about their sorry lives. Instead of reading about hope, go out and CREATE hope. Hope for starving children, hope for women in the Middle East with no rights. And do it because its the right thing, not for a silly pat on the back that this fan community is oh-so-fond of giving itself. And maybe hope would be better spread if the money from Emersons book went to help causes that actually matter. But no. The whole book was a money making scheme and I know that. Whatever Emerson. Just stop trying to make it sound so noble. "to raise awareness of GMH" Give me a fudge break. And go ahead and deleat this, Emerson, if fake hope is so much more important than freedom of speech.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 14:20:25
i kind of agree with tonks_394 its kind of weird to give money to a cause that does not matter as much as starving children and people with cancer.but i hope were cool emerson lol
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 14:34:19
I cant understand people nowadays. We create a site calle FML and it is loved. If we create a site calle GMH, people hate it and say that it is depressing. Shoudnt it be the other way around?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 14:51:53
This idea was absolutely amazing! Emerson and Gaby, you guys did a great job. I wish positive things like this were done more often, because we really do need more hope in the world.
I know theres already a fan page, but someone should make a facebook group for GivesMeHope, that way everyone can invite others to it!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 14:52:33
Emerson I can help you (not too much but a bit) promote the website. Contact me for info,.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 14:59:15
tonks_394 does have a point that the money from the book could be put to better use, but that does not take away from the good things this website can do. I just sent my friend a link to GivesMeHope, and he replied back, "Thank you, I really need this, FML makes me more depressed." So you see, GMH really can make someones day better.

Guys Hes doing this of course for a good cause... And in the world that we live in you have to make money, hence why this is another good reason to have the site. And in our world you have to advertise so people know about it... How better to advertise it then on a site with thousands of hits daily? I agree its not really relevant to a Harry Potter Fan site. This is for a good cause, but even good causes require money/advertising. I think some of you are just jealous you didnt think i it first ;) But seriously to those ppl that are bagging on this idea, if it was you that thought this up, you wouldnt care, and if you had the means to make it happen Im pretty sure youd do it, just as I would if I was in Emersons shoes...

Emerson and Gaby, this is a wonderful idea and you did an amazing job with it. Too many people live day to day without love, hope, and faith in humanity, creating what can be a cold and harsh world to live in. Its refreshing to come across a website that counteracts that mentality, and reminds us of the aspects of life that make this world worth living in :)

Raising awareness for GMH sounds like youre donating money for cancer research or something. I like the idea of the site, but honestly, this news post seems a bit full of it.

Emerson is looking to cash in.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 17:39:48
why do you guys say FML is betTer than GMH just because FML make you feel better and GMH depressed? it should be the other way around! cmon, people, ITS NOT RIGHT TO FEEL GOOD BECAUSE OF OTHER PEOPLES DEPRESSION...!

Why are people having a go at Emerson over this? He is a GREAT guy doing a really DECENT thing! It seems nowadays that anyone trying to help my surely be doing it for their own vested interest, and thats totally untrue! LEAVE EMERSON ALONE!!! LEA :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 18:00:54
Btw, the LEA thing was a joke :) Dont wanna sound like one of those apparant Emerson droids ... :s

Wow, Emerson, that is a beautiful site, and an even more beautiful cause. I totally back you up 100%, and am going to buy a book, just as soon as I get paid again. Congrats on your engagment too!! ^-^

Youre a genius!
I think it was just a few days ago, no lie, that I was thinking about how there should be a positive version of FML and its a shame I dont have the skills to create it! And then I found this! You rock!

I cant believe, even after I already commented, people are STILL praising this "great idea". NEWS FLASH: This idea isnt new. Sites like www.mylifeisg.com and www.lmylife.com already exist. So instead of worshipping Emerson and proclaiming him to be a supergenius, accept the truth: This is an unoriginal idea, and not a particularly amazing one to boot. Its a bit sad that proceeds from the MuggleNet book will be going to this...it almost seems like a joke.

Dont be such a hater--I think its cool!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 21:31:28
Yes, it is a great thing :) and a great idea Emerson :) However, I do not like the taking up half the site with the EXTREMELY long post on something completely non-Potter related.

I think GMH is a really good idea. Ive never really been into FML. Im not exactly an optimist, but sometimes I wonder why people have to go off on negativity.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-05-31 23:28:36
yeah, FML can be funny, but its kinda stupid and depressing... and half of those people only got screwed because they made really bad decisions, so I think this is a cool alternative!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-01 01:16:25
Haha, I like this one: "Today i found GMH, but then i realized that I like FML way more. FML"
And I agree with what some other people have said, FML does a good job of making me feel like my life isnt so bad after all. GMH has the potential to do the opposite. Or just be really corny. And yeah, if youre going to give the money to anything, give it to a charity.

I dont know about this...Mattrixed is right, there are already a few websites that do this exact same thing. So, it seems to be kind of an unoriginal idea. And that post was a little bit full of it. It made him seem like a Saint or like he had just found a cure for cancer or something. Dont get me wrong, its a nice idea, but I dont think its one of his best. And and is Emerson making money off of the GMH website? Because if he is, then hes pretty much just donating all of his money in order to make more money for himself. So, why not just skip a step and keep it all? And yeah, if youre going to sound like a Saint or a young man who craps rainbows, then you should probably donate the money to a charity of some kind.

chrissyweasley we are so related. lol

Actually the other "optimistic" websites are just like, "dude, I scored a girl today, i love my life" which isnt really the point of this website... not just stupid good things that happen but really truly good things that are stories that are uplifting and hopeful...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-01 21:01:41
I agree that Emerson sounds full of himself...yeah, nice idea, but really? using the money from that book to raise awareness for your new website? ummm....how about raising awareness for something like cancer or cystic fibrosis or autism or something that actually needs to have awareness raised?! Sorry, but you sound like you are doing this "great deed for manking" or something, when really you sound kind of arrogant. Sorry, Emerson, but you went about this in the completely wrong way...not to mention, this is a Harry Potter site (which you should know, since you started it) and should contain something at least marginally related to Harry Potter....which this is NOT. Thats all.

What a neat idea, Emerson!! Theres so much sadness and despair in the world that its nice to hear about the good things that are happening!! :-D

Aww such a great idea! Itd be great if the website brightened someones mood :)
