In their latest newsletter to members, the UK cinema chain, Showcase Cinemas, released an exclusive interview with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince producer, David Heyman. In it he gives a brief but exciting snapshot of what we can expect from the sixth movie. When asked about the darkness of the film David said, ‘I don’t think it’s any darker than the fifth. I really don’t. I think it’s on a par with that.’ Talking about the overemphasis people place on the darkness of the films Heyman stated that, ‘Everybody obsesses with the darkness but ultimately I think that what it is, it’s very accessible, moving, funny and exciting.’ You can watch the clip here.

thats interesting that he said that. i also sometimes think that people talk too much about how they are so "dark".

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 16:24:36

So, why exactly was OotP PG-13 and HBP PG if they are on par?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 16:28:22

Well Im excited for the movie! Lets see how it turns out.

say fricka frick what?

Its how Rowling writes about power, darkness, and choices that make these books so compelling. Theres a profound balance of mystery and direct involvement that drives the characters, the stories, and the outcomes of conflict. Bring on the darkness... :-)

ummm wtf? is he dumb? we go through a whole f**kin funeral procession, how is this not darker? i def cried more while reading this book than OotP but i dunno, to each his own

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 17:30:48

I must say, I cant really complain because I have been one of those people obsessing over the darkness of the newer films. lol. Honestly, I think the fifth film went as dark as it could go while still keeping its young audiences at heart. Im glad they are taking a new approach with Half-Blood Prince. It was actually comforting to know that Yates wanted a fresh feel for the film while maintaining its overall continuity. I dont think Ive ever been as excited to see an HP film as I am to see this one. I feel like the puzzle is finally being pieced together, and all the characters we thought we knew end up deceiving us. I love how romances are fluorishing in Hogwarts and how we are diving into a new level of character relationships. This is definitely going to be a big surprise for both HP fans and non-HP fans alike.

Well, the only thing in this movie that I think would make it darker is the Cave and all that stuff. I think its going to be MUCH MUCH more sad, but Dumbledores death is not dark, per say. The inferi are what I think would make it dark, because that truly is a horiffic scene, but its still not much worse than the creature dripping unicorn blood from its mouth as it stalks toward Harry in SS or Aragog in CS, or even the graveyard and Voldemort coming back in GOF. OOP didnt seem that dark to me....other than bad lighting :P. I think the reason it felt dark was because none of the characters were at all happy, so how can the book/film be??? HBP was much happier and much more sad at the same time, people still disappearing and Dumbledore dying and whatnot, but the teens are fighting and falling in love, learning to apparate (which has GOT to be funny :)), things like that. The book, even was much more lighthearted than OOTP was because Harry was happier. The ministry and everyone finally realized he was right, Dumbledore is not ignoring him, and he knows and has learned to accept how his life is going to turn out. So I dont think its a suprise at all that this one is "not as dark". Its not supposed to be.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 18:40:24

This is exactly the opposite of what I want to hear! Half-Blood Prince was a darker book than Order of the Phoenix, so why shouldnt the film be darker? The trailers certianly look darker! If they hadnt wasted their time on the whole relationships part of the book and had actually focused on the memories, which is the main point of the book, then maybe it would be darker!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 18:58:23

vici1126 is spot on. In HBP Harry was winning in potions. Even Draco succeeding in getting the deatheaters into hogwarts is a victory, of sorts. Dumbledore was dying anyway, Serius was not. Umbridge was really very twisted and nasty. Slughorn is jovial - much more like Lockhart. The scary monsters will always be terrifying, even if they are boggarts. And you will still have the sectumsempra curse to slash up Draco, the inferi, Dumbledores rotting hand, Ron almost dying, young Riddle tormenting children...

kapuffy26-I agree 100% I am looking forward to this movie more than any other movie. Ever. I think it will be refreshing to get a lighter, more simple movie. All the darkness is awesome of course and I do admit to wanting it in the movies. But I think that none HP fans will also like this movie more. It isnt hard to follow and its not like you need to know tons of stuff that already happened before you watch this one. I am really excited for this one and I have a feeling that it will be my favorite one so far. The book is a good mix of darkness, romance, and comidy. And yet it still has all the things that make it Harry Potter :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 20:31:55

I feel like this is the FIRST ever time that they arent saying the next film is "a lot darker than the others"!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 20:32:51

Glad someone finally cleared that up! haha

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 20:45:38

thanks for the insight heyman, but me and all my closest friends are still not seeing HBP in theaters. Anything HP related is still awesome though !!!!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 20:55:05

I think its clear that all the scenes that are meant to be dark will be dark (Katie Bell and the necklace, the cave, etc)... But overall, the book was always the "backstory" book of Harry Potter... more informative and narrative-y... I dont see why everyones freaking out about how "dark" its suppose to be. Everyone just needs to relax. Its going to be a great movie. Things will be changed. Things will stay the same. (Like any adaptation) Just open your minds and remember that we should be grateful JK Rowling wrote such amazing books. Without those, we wouldnt have anything at all! (Also, need I remind everyone that Britains rating system gave it the equivalent of a PG-13 here in the United States... The U.S. is soooo desensitized when it comes to movies and their ratings, Im sure its still going to be horrific in all the right spots :] )

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 20:56:12

Lol, finally it isnt just "the films are getting darker." Seriously, if theyd said that one more time I would get a shirt with that phrase printed on it. xD By the way..Im sure everyone else noticed this already, but the dress Emma wears for the deathly hallows wedding scene (you know, the red one from our first DH photos) is nearly the same one she wore in that Vogue photoshoot. Here: http://www. zimbio.com/pictures/PO2-S s8KXw_/Celebs+Set+Harry+P otter+Deathly+Hallows+2/5 XkSmtkLUr7/Emma+Watson And here, second photo: http://www. mamimagazine.com/wordpres s/?p=2951 Take out the spaces after the www. :) I just thought that was kinda interesting they looked similar. Coincidence?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 21:03:33

I have to agree with felix720. The books are what back the movies and if people want these movies to be filled with "dark scenes" then they are wasting their time because the books are not meant to be "dark." They are sort of a documentary of Harrys life and the movies are trying to stay true to that. Also, the parts of the movies that people see as dark, arent really dark at all. They are actually pretty sad. I mean in OOTP, Siriuss death was sad, not dark. And in HBP, Dumbledores death is gonna be pretty sad, not dark. I think that there is enough "darkness" in the movies to keep the viewers entertained without going overboard. I personally think that HBP will be one of the best movies because it is staying true, almost 100%, to the books-even if Dumbldores funeral isnt included.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 21:34:57

In response to what jmill said about the funeral scene: The funeral BETTER be included!!!! I wanna see it!!! Plus we have some great Harry-slamming-Scrimgeour moments at the funeral, as well as the Ginny/Harry "breakup" and a REALLY great trio scene (where Ron and Hermione explain that theyve had time to turn back and that their with him the whole way). I think its WAY too important to be left out :). Those scenes wouldnt make sense anywhere else.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 21:48:34

Im not tellin em, YOU tell em... :-)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 21:53:42

Besides... technically all of that stuff happens after the funeral.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 21:57:12

vici1126-OMG I know! They CANNOT leave that out!! I will be soooo angry! I love that scene!!! It has so much meaning throughout. I love the little trio part. Plus the "breakup" just wouldnt be right in a different part :( And yes Scrimgeour stuff is good too. They cant end the movie any other way!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 21:58:03

i totally agree with vici and several others....ratings and the amount of darkness doesnt make or break the movie. on that note, i hate to burst your bubble vici, but it has been confirmed that funeral scene will not be in movie. they may add as deleted scene or at beginning of DH. also they are cutting scrimgeor out completely as well as aparition lessons....personally i was pissed when i heard that because apparition lessons was a part of the book i loved and something i really wanted to see on screen....oh well...cant wait for the 15th!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 22:02:30

WHAT!? Ok that made me mad reading your comment, meekel36. No funeral and no apparating? What the heck??!! How could they leave those things out :( Especially the funeral scene. Grr. Oh well I still have high hopes for this movie.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 22:15:48

they might incorporate the funeral information in differently (it is an adaptation after all) but apparition lessons made me think...how will harry apparate himself and dumbledore back from the cave if he was never taught how? i would be ok with them leaving some of that stuff out, but then they also cut most of the memories (the two from the gaunts house, hepzibiah smith, adult voldemort returning to hogwarts for job)....the crucial memories that reveal and describe the horcruxes...guess well have to just wait and see how they do it!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-11 23:19:10

I agree with David H in some aspect of the way HBP is develope is not as dark as DH. In DH we can see what happen if you lost the part the makes human. In HBP, we can see how a person can be so involve in something they do not understand and according to him/her do the right thing.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 04:21:27

isnt the story darker??.....the cave scene, Dracos role, studying Voldemort through Dumbledores memories......ISNT THAT ALL DARK???.....Man Im starting to hate Heyman...lmao.....worse, if it actually doesnt appear that dark, Im afraid well be disappointed! How can HBP not be dark??...even with all the romance in the air?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 05:43:41

Not good, OotP wasnt dark much at all. Each film should get darker and by that I mean more intense and emotional. I guess I can see how HBP isnt too much darker than OotP, the books, but they left out most of that with OotP, sooo HBP should be much darker if they left anything in.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 06:49:12

Ohh im so afride that they dont include the funeral. COMMON GUYS maybe they will take it with.. if we send letters to WB and tell them that th MUST THEY IT WITH!!!!!!!!!! >:)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 08:23:58

Heymans right.. PEOPLE NEED TO STOP OBSSESSING OVER THE DARKNESS OF THE MOVIES.. Geez, its like EVERY movie "Is this one darker? Is this one darker? Is this one darker? Is this one darker? Is this one darker?" WE KNOW! Of course itll be darker, its Harry Potter! Thats like saying if James Bond gonna have Any Bond girl? Or is Star Wars gonna have any space battles? lol

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 09:05:43

The joke is, none of the HP movies are that dark to begin with...there are plenty of other movies out there which are MUCH "darker" than any Harry Potter movie is (or should be). Seriously...who cares?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 11:02:08

I have a feeling that David and WB want to make sure the younger audience goes to see the film. But I agree with him...the darkness is just a part of the overall story. Its not the most important aspect of the films.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 13:16:04

This must be the first time that someone hasnt claimed that a Harry Potter film is darker than the previous.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 16:37:10

ugh. this sucks...

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-12 23:27:41

Vici1126-Im sorry to break the news to you, but both Scrimgeour and the funeral have been cut from the movie. According to Yates and audiences who saw the screening, the film ended on a somber note, like in the book. Apparently, some funeral scenes were shot, so there is still speculation that they might surprise us on July 15th with the exact ending of the book, but that is only speculation. All I can say is that, with or without the funeral, the film is going to have an effective ending that will create a solid bridge for Deathly Hallows.

Alright, to all those people dissing those of us who have kept up and have been interested with the darkening tones of the films, please be mature about the way you express it. Weve been concerned about the darkness of the films, because if the films didnt get any darker, then wed still be seeing a Harry Potter movie matching Sorcerers Stone and Chamber of Secrets. The characters are older, therefore they are dealing with more intense stuff, and the way a director approaches that material is very important. Chris Columbus did a good job of showing us a whimsical world where a childs mind is allowed to roam free, but Harry, Ron, and Hermione are teens; Chris Columbuss vision was young and light. Now Yates has darkened the color palette of the films based on the complexity of the plot and characters. Were no longer seeing a naive Harry who sees everything in bright reds and yellows; were meeting a Harry whos discovering himself in a world as mysterious as life itself. That is why the darkening of the films has meant so much to many of us, and why we have been so concerned about it. Besides, for me, when I hear about the "darkness" of the films, Im thinking about the lighting and the contrast, not about the plot. Compare Sorcerers Stones look to Order of the Phoenix; listen to the music and the dialogue. All that has obviously gotten more mature and as the films have been progressing therefore making it darker.

im just happy they havent made it like ootp to be honest ootp wasnt dark just depressing which ofcourse the horrible lighting did not do n e thing to make it any better ...so yeh im happy they gone and used better lighting for this movie cuz i was getting sick of feeling tht hogwarts was situated in some land where the sun never came out lols honestly after poa everythings all dark lighting i miss the way they showed the castle with clear skies in the first 2 movies

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-13 15:50:20

idek what to say to that. HBP is my favourite and if they mess it up ill be pissed

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-13 17:59:36

I DO NOT LIKE THIS STATEMENT AT ALL wtf Ill be soooo pissed if its not as dark as it is supposed to be.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-16 10:50:24

Er.. This movie better be darker than OOTP or Im gonna be writing to this guy.
