Coverage: Harry, Carrie, and Garp Night 2
We just left the second night of "An Evening with Harry, Carrie, and Garp" where JK Rowling answered some BIG questions for everyone. Here's the new facts:
- Other than Harry, Jo would most want to bring Hagrid into the real world.
- There's more to Aunt Petunia than meets the eye, and we'll find out what's unique about her in Book 7.
- Don't expect Dumbledore to pull a Gandalf.
- Dumbledore IS really dead. "Everyone needs to move through the five stages of grief" and get past his death. She also apologizes to DumbledoreIsNotDead.com for ruining the purpose of their site.
- Jo's future after Potter includes taking a long break from writing. She also plans to release a young children's book (currently half-written) that is shorter than any Potter novel.
- The librarians in the Potter novels have to be evil, otherwise the students would have nice librarians to help them find all the information they need. "Hermione wouldn't have to do any work!"
- Author Salman Rushdie, along with his son, came to ask, after a detailed theory, if Snape is good or bad. Jo replied that "your opinion was correct." Rushdie's opinion, unfortunately, was hard to follow.
- After being asked if there was one question fans should have asked by now but haven't, Jo couldn't reference any question in particular.
- While taking a shower before the reading today, Jo said that she had come up with a different title for Book 7 that would work better than her current title. No word on which title will be used, though.
- Stephen King said he was scared of Death Eaters, to which Jo replied, "I scared Stephen King."
- Moderator Soledad O'Brien asked the three authors who from their books they'd invite to dinner. Stephen immediately said he'd invite Harry and Hermione.
- While Jo is listing the characters who she'd invite to dinner, she names the trio but then pauses. The crowd begins to shout out other characters, but Jo responds, "I'm the only one who knows who lives through the series," accidentally implying that she could only list characters who make it through the final book. Her final two choices (after realizing what she said) were Dumbledore and Hagrid.
Whoopi Goldberg once again kicked off the night. Actor Tim Robbins introduced Stephen King, Stanley Tucci (starring in Devil Wears Prada) introduced John Irving, and Kathy Bates introduced Jo. All three of the writers read the same passages that they read last night.
UPDATE: Reader Kate sent us this report from last night. It includes some extra details on what Jo said regarding Book 7.

awesome!!! (1st post?)
I wish I had been there! It looks like she answered a lot of good questions. Top ten????
awesoome cant wait pictures and video wooooo hooooo made the top ten first time ever cant wait for book 7 hope its next yr
post 3! Ahhh! great! I would have given my right hand to be there! (well, maybe a finger...)
What!!!??????? Dumbledore's dead???? NOOOOOOOOOO!!! I was sure he wasn't :(
SO does that mean that Ron, Harry, and Hermione survive????? Can't wait to find out!!!! Jo's great. I'm also a fan of Stephen. Loved "Fire Starter" read it when I was like nine and could kind'a relate. Also liked Cujo and Christine, but Carrie scared the ..... out of me.
to tabitoo... i think what she means is they die... i hope not, but gosh... this is... a lot. i hope she announces the title of the book soon! -_-
OOooOOoo!?! Wonder if that means the trio survive. Hmmm. Not a smart move. Or maybe it's genuis. We just don't know with JK. Ahh. She's my hero.
OOOHHH! You all forgot something!!!! According to The Leaky Cauldron, a very prolific author got up for his question, his son next to him, and asked Rowling point-blank whether or not Snape was good or bad. She didn't answer back with a point-blank response. She simply said that his "opinion is correct." What I make of that is if a person has the nerve to actually still think Snape is good, which I have unwaveringly thought since I started reading the books no matter the events of HBP, then their opinion of him, that there is a chance that he is good, is correct. I mean come on . . . it's not like she can really hide the fact that he's thought to be good by the majority of fans. Settling the fact that Dumbledore is dead is just putting an end to the extreme ideas brought out by fans who haven't moved on to the "five stages of GRIEF". It's GRIEF, NOT life!
Haha, I knew Dumbledore was dead! Ahh...I love learning things from authors! I feel pretty bad for the person who did dumbledoreisnotdead.com, because now he will be flooded with emails....
Wow. I'm sooo confused now, but that really sounds like the trio will live. But they can't! At least one has to die. (Okay, so call me morbid.) Mayeb I'm just reading this wrong. But yay! Top ten?
this is great....!!!!!!!!?
omg! i went yesterday..but i should've gone TODAY! these questions are soooo much BETTER than yesterdays!
Finally!!!!!!!!!!! Now everyone can stop those theories that Snape was using a non verbal spell before killing dumbledore or that it wasn't the real Dumbledore that got killed or whatever denial thoeries people came up with.
OMG, i can't believe Dumbledore is really dead! I'm sad now...But her last comment about the people she'd invite to dinner, does that mean Hagrid dies in the final book?
Hmm, I always thought that Hagrid wouldn't make it through the series, even though I love him, and to me that implies he dies. Comforting to know it's probably not one of the trio though. And Dumbledore's really dead! That clears some things up.
Oh my goodness! That is so awesome! So does that mean that the trio is living? All three of them? Yay! Well, they better! And ha! to all you people who thought Dumbledore still lives. I don't get why people thought that. Oh well. I'm curious about Aunt Petunia though. I wonder. . . .
Interesting response from dumbledoreisnotdead.com - there site reads as follows - "BREAKING NEWS (8/2/07) J.K. ROWLING MENTIONS DUMBLEDOREISNOTDEAD.COM! At her live reading in New York City this evening, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling told the fans that Dumbledore is really dead and he will not "pull a Gandalf". She said, "Everyone needs to move through the 5 stages of life" and get past his death. She also apologized to DumbledoreIsNotDead.com for ruining the purpose of their site. But if Dumbledore is as important to the final conclusion of the story that we think he is, do we really believe J.K. would give us correct clues about what happens in book 7? Stay tuned for updates!" Uhhh...What else could she mean?
i think that jkr was just trying to through us off she wouldn't go out point blankly and tell us that the trio would live and tell us that snape was good .
Oh yeah, I'm excited to know about Petunia too. Very intriguing. And this is the first time I've been in the top 25 comments, or whatever number we're at now. Yay for being obsessed with mugglenet! It serves me well.
so it sounds like the trio lives, though u nver no the true meaning with jo. and im really curious about aunt petunia...
Finally some answers!!
OMG. i just got back! it was amazing! gah! i was 8 rows away from JKR. it was magnificent. ahh. but it was sad because we really didnt learn anything new. oh well. she's jkr. it doesnt matter. i'm sad i didnt get to meet the mugglenet people though!
hmm about not saying whether snape is good or not is interesting! Makes me wonder if my theory of Snape the true antagonist is wrong.... maybe...
That was a big thing to say that Dumbledore is dead. This is sort of frustrating because the info on Dumbledoresnotdead.com is so good. There are so many things about his death that don't add up. I've always thought that he really was dead but the idea of there being a chance that he was not was nice. Just a few days ago I was trying to convince someone that Dumbledore really might not be dead and quoting Dumbledoresnotdead.com like there was no tomorrow. But tomorrow did come... and he is dead. But I really in my heart believe that Jo won't kill the trio. I know that a lot of people believe that she will kill Harry and Ron but Hermione will servive but I don't think so. To many people love these characters. And I'm not looking for a hollywood ending, I just don't think that she would do it. The power of love is to strong.
Wow, great stuff! I can't wait to hear more...so Harry lives! I'm not sure how I feel about that....eh. Don't care...I just don't want Snape to die.
Yes! Finally JKR silenced those delusional people who believed Dumbledore was alive! Thats really good info =] It helps theories a lot
ok ok. so dumbledore is really dead which i suspected all along:) glad she finally cleared that up. but now whats this about who they want to invite to dinner. did she actually slip that they all live or was she pausing because she then realized that harry/ron/hermione DOESNT live through the series? thats a tough one:S
He's not only merely dead He's really most sincerely dead.
She is implying they DO live. Because if she wanted to go to dinner with them now, several years later, they would have had to survive the events of the 90's. Wow...so Dumbledore is dead...for sure. I knew it all along, but I still can't help but feel sad all over again.
Um....why is it such big news that Dumbledore is dead? Didn't anyone other than myself actually READ Book 6? For those who did not, Dumbledore gets hit by the 100% deadly, unblockable Avada Cadavera curse. Why does anyone expect this would not have the same effect on Dumbledore than it had on Cedric Diggory? Nobody, that I know if, has launched a site called Cedric DiggoryIsNotDead.com, right? As for the DELUSIONAL DENIAL the DumbledoreIsNotDead.com people are in (time to dig up old Emerson-isms), they seem to have plotted their course along the same route as the HMS Harry-Loves-Hermione.
i was hopeing that dumbledore was alive, but i was not shocked or reacted when i learned he was truely dead. so i guess i knew all alone we was gone. but i'm really happy harry, ron, and hermione are going to live! and i'm glad j.k. sliped up because it shows how normal she is and we get extra info!! too bad about the title though. i just hope she realeses stuff like the sorting hat's song the years harry missed it, other titles and things that she decided to change.
does this mean that the trio will survive??!! Oooh! That would definitely save me from a long period of mourning...I hope that slip of JK's means something! :-D
I think she meant (without wanting to) that the trio will survive... Yay! Hey, I'm really curious about Petunia... She said she was not a witch, nor a squib... So what's the deal with her?? Ohh she has the title already... Come on Jo, spill the beans!!
anyone know where we can read what his opinion about snape was? i am cuuurious about that as well
Having been there, I will give my inexpert opinion that she did, in fact, imply that the trio lives. Basically, she began by saying that she would invite Harry, then paused for a moment, said that of course she'd have to invite the entire trio, then paused for a really long time to think, then said that the problem was that they had to be alive, then hastily decided (out loud) that, no, she could invite characters who were dead, too, in which case of course Dumbledore could come along..., and Hagrid, too, after more thought. I think it was fairly obvious that there was some quick thinking of trying to cover up her misstep, and to some extent it has worked (people will be unsure whether she meant that all three live or one or more of them had died), though the audience realized immediately that she had slipped up.
I just got back! That makes it seem like she was on for a while...she was on for the shortest time out of the aurthors. A few people asked questions, but you had to have prime seats to answer, and they asked you before hand if you would read your question. And no she yet again left the door open for people to argue about weather the trio will survive. She said that "All aurthors have a bit of ice in their hearts." Which could mean anything....
hmmm Cuivien well thanks for that that makes more sense. so does that mean that hagrid dies? i am le confused because if she said the "problem" was they had to be alive, then i would think that that means harry lives and then either ron or hermione die. and then hagrid dies as well....i donno...
I'm so confused. *implodes* Um. Is there going to be a transcript...? Somehow, I feel like I've been spoilt. Hmm. I wanted one of the Trio to die, honestly. I like it when characters I love die.
The thing about the Dumbledore thing is that hasn't Rowling thrown us off before? When HBP was about to come out, we got a quote from the book. And if I remember right(I'd have to check her site, or mugglenet), it was labeled "A description of the half blood prince." So, if in fact I'm remembering that correctly, she deliberately threw us off, since that particular quote was describing the new minister. I'm not trying to perpetuate dumbledoreisnotdead.com, but the fact is she has thrown us off before, so why wouldn't she do it again? Doesn't bother me really.
I was at the second night, it was amazing!!!!!!!!!!! it says this in the night two coverage "Everyone needs to move through the 5 stages of life" I don't think it was life but greif, and she said that we were all in the denial period and were now onto anger(or something like that)
Omg she gave out so much! thats great....I guess Hagrids not dying :P Dumbledores dead! I knew it...I can't wait to see what his picture will do:)
UGH! And those of you from Dumbledisnotdead.com who are all like 'Would JKR really give us correct information?" well she said she would only put a stop to rumors that are completely wrong that won't go anywhere so people don't waste their time on them. So she does give out correct information when she puts down rumours. Get used to it. He's dead.
Well Jo has already revealed how Harry will finally kill Voldemort: the unopenable door at the Department of Mysteries, that, according to Dumbledore, is so powerful because it holds so great an amount of the very thing that Voldemort detests the most: love. Therefore, if Harry uses love to kill Voldemort, then it doesn't seem like he or any of his beloved friends would die. And Jo has just confirmed that the trio survive, because she realized her mistake afterwards, but then said Dumbledore and Hagrid, implying that they are 2 goners, but I think she mentioned Hagrid to throw us off because she just realized how she could do it. So, in conclusion: trio survives, Harry kills Voldemort in love room at Department of Mysteries, Dumbledore is dead, but probably not Hagrid. ~ Dogstar
WOW! I mean ... WOW! I'm shcoked. And very confused. And very happy. Sheesh .. Ok let's get things right: Dumbledore is dead? well, I have always belived that he was dead ,, but .. Mhm. I'm so confused right now. This is BIG. She answered a lot of questions! *speechless* I WISH I HAD BEEN THERE !!!!!!! *cries hysterically* Dogstar - that's kinda a good theory :)
Does that mean that the trio LIVES!?!? *gasps then falls down* wait. Or that Dumbledore (obviously) and Hagrid die? Oh lord, I can already tell this is going to be such a good book
Dumbledore really being alive would have SUCKED and you all know it! It would make book 6 seem pointless, and it would be Jo being really stupid with us. No matter what OTHER non-verbal spell Snape may have used to blast DD's body off the tower, he DID cast the Avada Kedavra curse which results in death (unless you have a Horcrux inside you like baby Harry did).
Hmmmm if he is really dead then I wonder what the missing text* means because if we believe that then nothing she said is very relevant because "He cannot kill you if you're already dead" means that he would be infact dead but living like a Non-Existent One. *For those that don't know the U.S. paperback was edited from its original version and formatted to fit the UK, Canada, and Austrailia edition.
The book reading was amazing! The news is really big-I can't believe Dumbledore is really dead, and I can't believe that JK Rowling announced it THERE! I had an awesome time at the podcast, even though that mean lady kicked you guys out of Barnes and Noble. Oh well, the street worked too. I love all you MuggleCasters so much-you guys are really sweet and funny. Hope to see you in New York next year as well-maybe in a bigger venue without a time constraint? Thanks for making this day, and every day for that matter, amazing.
Finally!! We know Dumbledore's dead, and several of us have been thinking he's not dead for over a year now!!
