Coverage: Harry, Carrie, and Garp Night 2
We just left the second night of "An Evening with Harry, Carrie, and Garp" where JK Rowling answered some BIG questions for everyone. Here's the new facts:
- Other than Harry, Jo would most want to bring Hagrid into the real world.
- There's more to Aunt Petunia than meets the eye, and we'll find out what's unique about her in Book 7.
- Don't expect Dumbledore to pull a Gandalf.
- Dumbledore IS really dead. "Everyone needs to move through the five stages of grief" and get past his death. She also apologizes to DumbledoreIsNotDead.com for ruining the purpose of their site.
- Jo's future after Potter includes taking a long break from writing. She also plans to release a young children's book (currently half-written) that is shorter than any Potter novel.
- The librarians in the Potter novels have to be evil, otherwise the students would have nice librarians to help them find all the information they need. "Hermione wouldn't have to do any work!"
- Author Salman Rushdie, along with his son, came to ask, after a detailed theory, if Snape is good or bad. Jo replied that "your opinion was correct." Rushdie's opinion, unfortunately, was hard to follow.
- After being asked if there was one question fans should have asked by now but haven't, Jo couldn't reference any question in particular.
- While taking a shower before the reading today, Jo said that she had come up with a different title for Book 7 that would work better than her current title. No word on which title will be used, though.
- Stephen King said he was scared of Death Eaters, to which Jo replied, "I scared Stephen King."
- Moderator Soledad O'Brien asked the three authors who from their books they'd invite to dinner. Stephen immediately said he'd invite Harry and Hermione.
- While Jo is listing the characters who she'd invite to dinner, she names the trio but then pauses. The crowd begins to shout out other characters, but Jo responds, "I'm the only one who knows who lives through the series," accidentally implying that she could only list characters who make it through the final book. Her final two choices (after realizing what she said) were Dumbledore and Hagrid.
Whoopi Goldberg once again kicked off the night. Actor Tim Robbins introduced Stephen King, Stanley Tucci (starring in Devil Wears Prada) introduced John Irving, and Kathy Bates introduced Jo. All three of the writers read the same passages that they read last night.
UPDATE: Reader Kate sent us this report from last night. It includes some extra details on what Jo said regarding Book 7.

Honestly people, like others have said did you even READ book 6? cuz i did & if im not mistaken dumbledore DIED. hes dead, DEAD as a doornail so get over it! ALthough, dumbledoreisnotdead.com is a really good site & has very good theories to support that he maybe lives but thats just what they are. GOOD THEORIES. You poor people have been brainwashed if yall still thought he was alive. Dont get me wrong im not un-sympathetic bc im 18 & i cried like a baby when i read the 6th book a few months ago, & if i read it again i prob would again. But guys c'mon. anyways i also loved the stephen king comment. It was funny/cute. It must have been really great to be there. Thanks Jo for clearing that up for everyone. Maybe now everyone else will stop acting like headless zombies. =]
ps. just to clear a possible misunderstanding about my comment, im not doggy the fact that anyone "hoped" dumbledore was still alive cuz i mean i did too, im just dogging those who swore their life & soul that he was still alive. heh. so yea in otherwords those who were in denial for AGES! lol
Yeah, so Dumbledore is dead...we did this with Sirius, too, so no biggie....i knew Dumbledore was dead, no denying it, we are just too in love with characters close to Harry to want them dead...anyways, the trio seem to live because of her slip-up, which i think is great because i kept predicting ron's death, and i'm very happy he doesn't die...there were no true implications about Hagrid, so no clues there...i still kinda want ron to die, though, just so i can be right, lol, but it wouldn't be a bad ending either....what's scary is that she struggled thinking of characters that live with the whole dinner thing, so i think a grip of people are gonna die in this next book, which we could've guessed anyways, but still, she couldn't think of ONE besides the trio....book 7 title better come out soon!!
Would that mean Hagrid actually DIES in Book 7 ?
I'm glad Jo put all those delusional "Dumbledore is not dead" people to rest. And now I'm A LOT happier after hearing her imply that the trio will survive.
So Dumbledore is really dead... I always thought he was but there was a bit of doubt brought on by all thoughs he is not dead theories. But no more, and now we can move on. Now we can concentrate on why he is dead and if he did choose to die. I think if Snape hadn't gotten him something else would have, face it he was old the green potion was no health drink and he's been seen to be getting older and tired for a while. I'm kind of wondering why Fawkes didn't show up... maybe because Dumbledore didn't want him to. Hay does that mean that the trio will live. I hope so, but then again there are lots of others that may die. If she hadn't thought about her mistake then we wouldn't have noticed.

that's sad how dumbledore isn't going to come back to life. i think it's hilarious that stephen king, of all people, is afraid of death eaters.
I knew he was dead! Hah. Were there someone there whom might be able to write a slightly more detailed report? (: Not that this one was bad, but still.. Weee
I think snape is evil*although i believe he was undecided for those 16 years he was working at hogwarts* the moment he killed dumbledore he had made his decision. When someone said that "we don't want to believe Snape is evil, because that means dumbledore is dead", jk rowling replied, DUMBLEDORE IS DEAD. i think she might have been implying that snape is evil, although i could be wrong.
ah... oh... er.... hum.... well...... (gasp gasp).... er... well... ah... oh... WHAT????? NO WAY!!!! NOOOOOO! IT CANNOT BE! I DON´T WANT THIS TO BE TRUE!!!!!! :o( :-( :-(((( snif snif snif
WOOHOO Hagrid is going to die!! Great, now I'm really looking forward to book 7! The fact that JKR said that Albus isnt going to do a Gandalf doesnt mean that he wont come back. Albus died which is different to Gandalf who didnt die.
"Dumbledore is DEFINITELY dead." Shame. If it's true, then I'm really disappointed. Not because I wanted him to come back, but because she just killed half of the concept of Half-Blood Prince, and she knows what I'm talking about. Maybe she tries to make it seem ambiguous, you could say he's dead and do it, because technically he is, but I really really don't know anymore. If she does what I think she does, then she will have to come up with a very good explanation, but if she doesn't, then Half-Blood Prince is just a piece of c*** for me...
Hello y'all! I so wish i was there! I knew that Dumbledore wouldn't miraculously come back to life...aww no! *speechless* love Natasha x
i dont think her comment on the trio necessarily means that all of them have the same fate. and it dosent mean hagrid dies either. we have no idea what jk rowling's thought process is like. she could have been thinking anything.
lol i knew if it ended up with dumbledore not being dead after THAT performance, it would be pretty corny, don't u think?..lol "I scared stephen king"...i love book 7 info!!!!
Right, well, very er... intruging [i cant spell that word] Questions and Answers, and its good that she cleared up the whole dumbledore: Alive/ Dead thing - which surprised me. However, i am now thourghly confused; i know that she slipped up w/ the trio and then relised her mistake, but was she trying to say that the trio survived or at least one of them dies? And what about Hagrid, i've always thought that he's gonna get killed off, but he seems to be a much loved character by lots of people. (Then again, Dumbledore was my fav until he died, and im sure that there was others who didnt like him dead either).
Great!!! WE know that Dumbledore is dead now ok everyone just stop thinking hes still alive he's not! well..WE LOVE YOU JO!
Why in the WORLD are people still twittering on about Dumbledore being alive????????? No one made a website for Cedric or Sirius!!! ARGH!! Anyway, from what I understood, it makes it seem like one of the trio will die. I think (noticed I said THINK) she paused when she realized that she made it *sound* like the trio would live, when she didn't want to give any info on their fates in the first place. But what do I know? We'll just have wait another year or two and see...
OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!! HOORRAAAYY! Ron and Hermione are gonna live! They are so going to live! They're all gonna live! Nobody's dying!!!!! SQUEE! Oh no, now I'm starting to sound like melissa!! lol! Yay, finally, she put down all the theories about Dumbledore being alive! OMG (again) Jo's amazing! I luv her!!!!!! WEEEEEEEE!
NOO!!!! Dumbledores dead.... i had a feeling but i still didn't want him to be dead!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOO dumbledore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! COME BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what did she mean by hagrid??? is hagrid going to die??? what about the trio??? one has to die???? sorry but one does or does that mean they all die??????? interesting, very interesting.
omg the book reading sounds amazing!!! I wish I gould have gone...JK announced a lot of information! Now we know Dubledore's dead, which I guess is good to know...
YES! finally! finally no one will say dumbledore is still alive! thank you jo for clearing it up! FINALLY.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO Dumbledore well now Snape had better be innocent or ill be angry as if dumbledore was pleading for his life i will be really upset and will have lost respect for his character !!
PLEASE mugglenet! put a spoiler warning up! i didn't want to know that. it's ruined all the speculation.
i think its kind of wierd how everyone is interpreting this diferently then i am... everyone thinks the trio survies but i dont see how u can think tht when she says she wants to have harry to "appologize to him!" Well, i think tht the whole trio dies, but ron and hermione before harry. if u remember at the end of the 6th book, dumbledore told harry tht the ONLY reason y the prophocey will come true is bc harry wants revenge for all of those he has lost. he can not live with himself if he doesnt face voldemort to at least try and stop him. it is bc he loves tht makes him want voldemort dead so badly and it is tht alone tht will kill him (it would be interesting tho if harry does kill him in tht locked room in the department of mysteries, seeing as thts where the mysteries of love reside.) personally, i think tht ron and hermione die which makes harry tht much more angry at voldemort. harry cant live without his 2 best friends. i definetly think hagrids a gonner tho, bc so far, all of harrys adult help is gone, and as jk mentioned, since he is the hero he must do this on his own (another reason y ron and hermione would die.) well tho, at the same time, she said shes telling whats happening to the people who survies in the last chapter so i think tht ron and hermione may survie, or at least one of them, and if one of them does i think it would be hermione bc rons showed signs of sacrificing himself in order for harry to move on b4 now. well, while im unsure of the 2 sidekicks i definetly think tht harry is gonna die (but by dieing he will be sacrificing himself in order to kill voldemort) and so is hagrid and of course obviously voldemort and i think snapes a good guy and is the one who gets a reprieve :-P okay im done now
pigwidgeon is right. this news post was pretty spoiler-y. i dont really mind, but a lot of people might.
what does it need a spoiler warning for? All that she said was that Dumbledore was dead, which I htought he was aswell. All she was doing there is closing that one down so that we could consentrait on other things. You see now we know he is dead we may ask why it happend. All she did was comfurm what happend in book 6. As for the trio survivng thing we really don't know what she was thinking I mean it could mean anything really.
i am positive Harry is going to die at the end of the series...there are many clues leading up to it.
Ad Dumbledore's death: No, no, he's not dead, he's just resting! ;-))))
There is just as much clues leading up to Harry living, sirusluver. I agree with Jamie that you would have to be a hard person to kill the hero of your series, the one that you have spent 2 decadeds writing about and thinking about.
So Dumbledore is dead! I knew that! Remember what he told Harry...."there are things much worse than death..." It doesnt matter that Dumbledore is dead. I believe he sacrificed himself for Harry to move on. I also think it is better for Harry if Dumbledore is dead. That gives Harry more loyalty toward AD's memory and more fighting power for him to use. Remember what Sirius said in movie 5....'those who love us never really leave us..."
I can't believe dumbledore is dead. Although i was there to witness her actually say it, im still in shock. But hey! They still have his portrait to talk to so they aren't completely alone. But when i was at the radio city hall, the only regret i have is that i wish i could've arrived at 6 o' clock, because thats when they said that Jo arrived and that she signed some books. Btw, does anybody know when Jo actually left? Because I know that some people waited until like, 12:00 before giving up. I waited until about, 11:15pm. I really wish that I could of met her.
To Kadaj: Actually, Gandalf DID die. Read the book again carefully. He died (or, to be more precise, his BODY died), but he still had unfinished work in Middle-Earth so he was allowed to take on a new body and return (after all, he was a Maia, an immortal, and didn't need a body to live).
I am glad I attended the first reading instead, but this sounds as though it was wonderful, and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. I love finding out the answers to the questions -- which were definitely clever! :o)
Hay Tauriel Monty Python fan right. Oh I just have to do it. 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If he hadden't been cased in a tomb e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-HEADMASTER.
Yep i knew it would happen evntually.i cant believe she let something that big slip........but maybe she is messing with us and she intentionally said that to confuse us.you never know with J.K. Rowling.Shes a genius!!!!! -kirby
Harry won't die, and i'm not in denial or anything, he just can't die...i don't care how cold-hearted she says she is, she wouldn't kill off the main character of the books that she wrote about now for 2 decades...that would just be wrong, no matter how she puts it in writing....he's the hero, and in some cases, the hero has to die for the greater good, but that would suck in this case...7-book series, and then she kills off harry? won't happen, and i refuse to believe any theories that come across cause it's just a waste of my time...
HaHa Dumbledore's really dead! I knew it! Is Sirius really dead though? Someone should have asked that question?
I Think the best thing to do is not make assumptions that the trio is going to live... We won't know for sure what's going to happen until we read the 7th book so I would just wait and see rather than give everyone heart attacks about hows going to die or not. P.S.--- To those people who still believe that Dumbledore is not dead and that JKR is throwing a red herring, I think it's pretty clear by the statement "not pulling a Gandalf" That he his not going to pull a Gandalf. I think you need to talk to a local phycologist about these denial problems.
ha! dumbledores dead! i knew it! hahahahahaa! oh wait nooooooooooo!!! he's dead!!! they asked great questions and that was funny when jo said "I scared stephen king!"
I went to the book reading last night and it was absolutely AMAZING. I could not believe I was looking at the woman who created the amazing world of Harry Potter. Haha and I loved when she mentioned dumbledoreisnotdead.com. All I could think of was Eric Scull plugging the site on countless episodes of Mugglecast. Also, the leakymug was a blast. I won the raffle- a deluxe copy of Half Blood Prince signed by the illustrator Mary GrandPre. I also got it signed by all the Leakymuggers- awesome! Best day ever.
Hehe, I knew Dumbledore was dead! JKR wouldn't play with so many fans feelings, that would be cruel. At least we all have closure now.
No, no, no, no. Dumbledore can't be dead! No, no, no, no.
Ok two things... well actually three. First off... awesome job for scaring Stephen King J.K.!!!! I thought that would be practically impossible considering all the extremely creepy stuff he's written! Two... please don't kill off Hermione or Ron!!!!! Please!!!!! -grieves- Ok, third... she kinda contradicted herself cause she implied that she would only invite characters who live through the series and Dumbledore doesn't, and she confirmed that he is dead. Ok I'm done ranting for now.
So Dumbledore dying makes HBP a piece of crap? But... but... he *did* die! All the way back in July last year! And HBP wasn't a piece of crap back then? So wha-? But I agree with someone's comments about the trio; I don't think we should assume. It's possible that she meant it to sound differently from how she said --- she is a human being and all. So yeah. Don't get comfy XD
OH CRAP DUMBLEDORE'S REALLY DEAD!!!!! *launches into mourning pt II*
Ok now we know Dumbledore is really dead. I was of the thought that he was alive and he faked it. What I still don't get yet is why there wasn't any rushing sound after the flash of green light? Did JKR forget to put that in(doubt it) or do certain elements of a spell change with the power of the caster?
Oh no! According to Kate's account, Rowling said she'd want to apologize to Harry...which possibly means that if she doesn't let Harry get killed, it'll be Ginny! That would be awful. Really awful.
