Continuing with their series of Potter reports leading up to the release of Half-Blood Prince, the Los Angeles Times now has a piece with Director David Yates: It was about 3:20 a.m. yesterday when my phone rang: It was David Yates, the soft-spoken British director whose second "Harry Potter" film, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," arrives in theaters across America on July 15. He sounded apologetic: "It's quite early there isn't it? Thanks for doing this, mate." Despite the hour, it was my pleasure to take the call -- Yates is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet and, after visiting him outside London last year on the set of "Half-Blood Prince," it was a treat to catch up, even if his schedule required the pre-dawn appointment. Right now, Yates is in the midst of filming the final boy-wizard adventure, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," which will be split into two films. "We're here in the forest, we've just finished the scene where Harry, Hermione and Ron are captured by the Snatchers after being chased through the woods. The Snatchers are brutal and scary but they aren't the most intelligent of creatures. They're trying to figure out exactly who it is they've caught." Read much much more with David right here. There are some great comments from him about the casting of the trio and much more!

1st! cool

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-19 21:57:25

Chased through the woods? Wow, that would make for a great scene.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-19 22:04:54

he cant split it that way that puts 3/4 of the book in 1 film and 1/4 of it in another hed havbe to cut too much nullifiy thw hole point of the split

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-19 22:52:47

yeah i noticed that too... uh fuckyou39 (haha interesting username), but i think i know why!!! i was looking through the book and the first 3/4 of the book takes place outside of Hogwarts, and then the last quarter of course is the big finale at hogwarts. so i think they might cut the film right after the trio go to gringotts and get the cup and then they fly off on the dragon!!! and then the 8th movie will begin with them landing in hogsmeade or something. omg! i feel so smart. i think itd be pretty awesome if thats how its going to be!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-19 23:04:05

i think the best cliffhanger would be the snatchers catch them and then the movie ends, thats the better cliff hanger. although they filmed shell cottage already so it might be after the gringotts....... ugh.. wb and the directors are having so much fun toying with where the split will take place........ love how they made a chase outta them getting caught by the snatchers...

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-19 23:05:55

I thought it was only Ron who got captured?? It probably wont make a difference in the movie, but hopefully itll still be true to the book.

Jinxhex, Ron ALMOST gets caught when he leaves, but after they listen to the radio, Harry says Voldemort breaking the taboo and the snatchers get em. I think Yates means that they are looking at some point during the Malfoy Manor(when Voldemort is coming?), or just before it. Those are the biggest "cliff hangers" near there. I think making part II only Hogwarts would make that half drag and the other race comparatively. There has to be an especially strong since of continuity between these two since they share a title. And as to the equal amount of material on either side of the split... i think they will shorten camping and increase the Battle of Hogwarts. Camping would grow dull and could be condensed easily on film (via monyage etc). And we all know how battles are always pushed to their fullest potential in these sorts of movies. All my theories gathered from various sources, but all are guesses.... who knows.

but begging of the book-malfoy manor will take MUCH longer than 2.5 hrs there gonna have to rush through the first half of the book nullifiying the whole point of the split

LOVE YATES!!! I think he just basically told us that theyre going to end the movie somewhere around Malfoy Manor, which is pretty much what everyone thought in the first place. I think if they end it before all that stuff happens (wormtail dying, hermione getting tortured, etc.) then they can open the SECOND PART of the movie with Malfoy Manor too and it will create a kind of symmetry. But I"m really excited that they added a chase scene to the whole part with the Snatchers. :D

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-20 08:58:50

Awesome about the chase-race :). Also, I think that the movie will end somewhere either with Dobby dieing, or before wormtail dies/hermione tortured. And PEOPLE, lets not forget they can EASILY re-arrange scenes. Theyve done that in like, almost every movie. They could easily do something like that. But I believe Gringotts will be in the second movie. They cant only have Hogwarts in the last movie. I wanted the first part to finish with "You mean the tale of the Three Brothers?" =)

fuckyou (lol at your username ;) I dont think that they will be nullifying the split at all...they can easily fit all of the things before Malfoy Manor into the first film (but of course SOME things WILL be cut, its just how it goes)...I dont think they will have to rush that much...I mean they have 2 1/2 hours to fit in the beginning-malfoy manor...I dont think itll be that hard....a TON of that section of book is simply, "lets camp here BOOM lets camp there, POOF lets camp at a farm and steal some eggs now"...I mean, that whole descriptive section can be tossed and done with montages showing quickly that they are moving around a lot...then we have Seven Potters, Wedding Fiasco, fight right after the wedding in the cafe, Grimmauld Place, finding RABs origin, Kreachers Tale, Lupin vs. Harry (maybe theyll keep that part in), Ministry of Magic, camping montage (with talk of the sword of Gryfindor thrown in there somewhere), ron leaves, Godrics Hollow, Silver Doe/ Ron comes back/ horcrux destroyed, Xeno Lovegood/ Deathly Hallows, the trio camp a couple more minutes, Harry says voldemort like an idiot and they get chased through the wood and captured by snatchers, and BOOM end Part One...I think that will make for an action packed movie, but Im pretty sure they can fit it all in...

To all that are bitching about where the film is split. Films are NOT necessarily shot in chronological order. They could have already shot the end of the film if they found it suited the budget. The scenes are shot, then edited into their correct order. Rarely is a film shot as if it were live. So Yates happening to shot this particular scene tells you NOTHING about where it occurs in the film. So you can all quiet down now.

tbc07, you forgot Gordrics Hollow and Dumbledores past story. :P

txRABbit, It seems you are the only logical person here. Do you all think one of the biggest HP secrets (since book 7 came out that is) which I believe that it is a secret that they want to keep under wraps is not going to be given out this early in the game, I dont think so, I believe we will all have to wait until the first half is out in 2010. If you ask me for those who are not reading the books I believe leaving the movie after they get captured is a great cliff hanger. It also isnt 3/4 of the way through the book and even if it is there is so much that goes on after this point that to do the final ending any justice end the first half here would be perfect. It would be too sad to end it after Dobby dies but if they do then it would leave it with o. k. what is Harrys plan now to go from there either way, I believe they will choose what way is best to work out all the parts so that each half of the movie works well together. You all with your negativity need to take a chill pill. You all boo hoo to much.

David Yates is my favorite Harry Potter director and i think his interview is very interesting. Theyve even changed the scene where the trio is capture by snatcher be turning it into a chase scene (should be awesome) when originally the snatchers show up because Harry said Voldemorts name. OotP is my fav movie so far, HBP will change it though i know it will and my least favorite is PoA.

To prove my earlier point...remember, the scenes at Shell Cottage have already been shot. These events occur AFTER the trios capture by the Snatchers, and the scenes at Malfoy Manor. Also, thanks Roxy2005.

Your welcome txRABbit, exactly

I think it might end sometime around Shell Cottage because I just remembered that Steve Kloves said in his interview that hes STILL working on the script to Part Two of Deathly Hallows. Which means all they stuff theyre filming now is in part one.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-20 19:56:19

not nesscarily scripts have been nown to be rewritten DURING FILMING

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-20 20:40:45

On another note that they shoot out of sequence, theyve already shot the R and H kiss. LOVE the thought of a chase by the Snatchers!! Fantastic edge of our seats stuff and then the TO BE CONTINUED type thing will appear and make us all groan for more.

snatcher scene!! how exciting. and yates seems super nice

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-20 22:15:35

I think that the movie will starts at Malfoy Manor and will end there too.

David Yates, if you fudge this movie up like the last one I will personally rip your insides out, and skin you alive. Tim Burton would have been a MUCH better director for the sixth and definitly seventh and I think most people would agree. Dont fudge with Harry Potter or you will have a ton of muggles on your ass like hemroids.
