Recently, short clips from the Half-Blood Prince soundtrack have appeared online courtesy of cell phone ringtone websites.
A Potter fan put them all together into a YouTube video, which you can see at this link.
How do you think the soundtrack is shaping up? Let us know in the comments! Thanks to Nataliee for the tip.

I cant believe they can even think about getting a composer other than Williams. This stuff is absolute junk compared to PoA music. Absolute LAAAAMMMMEEEEE......

I absolutely agree. The song titled "Ginny" was exactly the same as the orginial Hedwigs Theme. The only songs that I thought even had a "Harry Potter feel" to it were Dumbledores Farewell and Inferi in the Firestorm. The rest just sounded like a joke (I hate to say). When Hooper did OOTP it sounded pretty good in my opinion, but this doesnt even feel like Harry Potter to me, and thats pretty upsetting. I was upset when I first saw the song names, but I tried to hold faith for the soundtrack...but after hearing the previews, I am completely dissapointed. This is a serious let down.

People need to get over that John Williams isnt composer anymore, seriously.
His stuff was great, but well, hes not doing them anymore.
I thought the soundtrack was okay, but they were, what, ten seconds clips of each song, or something?
Pretty good so far, I thought!
Well see how it goes compared with the movie.

I cant speak for MrPoe, but Im not upset that its not John Williams. I loved Patrick Doyle and Nicholas Hoopers work in Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. But I know Im not the only one who has listened to this and not even thought it sounded like Harry Potter. And that is not a good thing. So this just worries me....Im still going to buy the soundtrack and listen to all of it, But as a first impression, Im kinda worried.

Heatherrrxo: Get over John Williamss departure from the series? Pft, not likely! The fact that they havent tried harder to get back a five-time Academy Award winner for best score is a bit disturbing to me. I just hope David Yates chooses him over Hooper when it comes to DH, especially as Williams has expressed an interest in returning! Williams never fails to write phenomenal music, and he truly created some beautiful scores for Harry Potter - the way I see (or rather, hear) it, since Williams created the iconic "Hedwigs Theme" which most fans strongly associate with Harry Potter, the music is truly his. Still, this sampling of Hoopers HBP score isnt terrible - it looks like he did a few more musical styles than usual, somewhat reminicent of Williamss varied score for PoA. Still, well see if it all ends up in the final cut - I recall that electric guitar from the OotP soundtrack being excised in the film.

Where to start... where to end? I dont think I can type much as I have an exam tomorrow, but I have to say that I was really mixed.
I was absolutely glad to hear Hedwigs theme. I noticed from the official website that it sounded slightly different to Williams composition, in terms of layering/instruments. I think youll need to compare it closely to notice the difference, but there is definitely despite slight it may seem.
As for the others, Im not so sure just yet. Id like to hear the whole pieces rather than excerpts and even these excerpts arent from every single track on the OST so much is yet to be heard.
I will have to add that the jazz influence Im quite fond of. Good for Harry Potter? Probably not, but its great that its not completely classical. Again, the way it fits with the scenes is what matters of course, and thats where it will fit Im sure.
I will also have to add that this swing or jazz influence were hearing brings us to reality a bit, you know? Even though we like to be immersed in a world of magic, you cant help but acknowledge, especially with that musical accompaniment, the reality of the situation in HBP - That everyones human, wizard or muggle, but this time potentially all life is threatened. Slughorns theme may not make it seem that way, but Its something interesting to take from it.
Overall, Id like to hear the rest of it first but I think so far the OOTP soundtrack was a lot better, especially with the new themes. That being said, once theyre released we have the chance to grow with them and get used to them, especially after the movies release too.
Looking forward to it.

The Slug Party was my favorite!!!....The Weasley Stomp rocked, it had this whole Lion King beat in it...lol....The Story Begins was weird because of the fact that it was so cheerful!......lol Go GINNY!!...."When Ginny Kissed Harry" was so not depressing when compare to the track the played for Cho!!....Wizard Wheezes was amazing!.....Loved the soundtrack it had the beat this time....Really Different :D

Yay! They took my tip again :) But truth be told, I loved them all! They all sounded cool and fresh, and I think that all the songs will grow on us.

After a killer soundtrack like PoA, I do wish John Williams would come back, it would be amazing if he did for DH. I thought the previews for this soundtrack wernt bad. I quite liked Dumbledores Farewell- I thiunk I can just imagine it going well with the scene. A lot of them were a bit dissapointing though, sadly. But I really dont think I can judge it untill its put with the movie.

Look who ever keeps going on about people not gettin over John Williams, must be a close friend of Nicholas Hooper, because quite frankly that music Im hearing at the moment is dire S**T!
John Williams please come back... Not being funny but they have had an extra 8 months to get this film right, wouldnt have taken John Williams a couple of weeks to produce something 10 times better than that! I am throughly disapointed!!! :( GET JOHN WILLIAMS BACK!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 08:19:49
why would they mistreat Hooper like that THEPIANO1991 ??? Sounds ridiculous to me. Anyway Hooper did make the powerful and riveting music the Possession in OOTP, along with Umbridge, Flight of the OOTP, the DA, and Fireworks.. Those were my 5 favorite soundtracks from him. This one HBP sounds incomplete to me so i cant fully judge it until ive listened to the whole soundtrack. now who thinks that the Inferi music sounds just like the Possession scene? cuz i do :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 08:30:14
Im not listening. I do want Hedwigs Theme back though, the original theme. That is probably the most recognizable song tod o with HP and I havent heard it for a long time in the movies.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 08:35:56
well geez people are getting ridiculously up-in-arms about a few sound clips! I absolutely loved it, though OOTP was my favourite soundtrack. I love the Weasleys Wizard Wheezes song, and I liked that they tied Hedwigs theme back in with Ginny. That version of the theme was the closest to the first movie, in fact it was almost identical, and I like that it can symbolize Harry having to go back to where it all started to find true love and true destiny. Im wondering what "The Weasley Stomp" is, but it was cool. I also really loved the "Of Love and War" song. Didnt like Rons Victory song, it was kind of sad and didnt fit the tone, but the sound clip was so short you really werent given an idea of how it progresses. Anyway, good job overall, I enjoyed it.

Im going to be short and sweet: I liked it a lot.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 09:55:57
Whats wrong with Hoopers soundtracks is theres not many themes that get stuck in your head like we had for the first four films... this soundtrack is terrible! Its all too bland! ... grr!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 10:16:43
Holy crap. This is disappointing. None of them sound good. :(
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 11:12:11
I am currently majoring in composition in college, and I dont know why you guys are all dissing this stuff, I think it sounds great. Youll never really know how it will sound with the events until you see the movie completely put together with the soundtrack, and you hear the entire score. I thought Hooper did a great job with Order of the Phoenix, and Im sure Half-Blood Prince will shape out fine as well. My favorite has to be When Ginny Kissed Harry because I can totally picture it happening with that song!!!

john williams brought the magic alive in the first HP movies. since these films are getting darker (so they say), i think that hooper should be given some credit for his work in ootp and this one. we can really never judge if these HBP sounds are great or not bec. 1) we have to see how the sounds are incorporated into the scenes and 2) these are just 10 second previews. we need to hear more and feel more. HOWEVER, i do prefer 1000 times more to the original john williams sound. will it be possible to bring him back in the final two films??! that would be great.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 11:25:03
Its not like these movies have any continuity anyways so... at least weve got Hedwigs Theme stuck back in there.

I like these a lot! I like how they have the old one too.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 12:06:53
Kudos to whoever put the YouTube preview together. It was brilliant. However, the clips were way too short for me to have a definitive opinion about their merit. I am trying to keep an open mind and will wait until I see the movie to decide if I like what Hoopers done this time or not. I must admit The Wizard Wheezes clip held promise (a page right out of Williams POA I might add.) My only hope is that the musical thoughts are complete and dont trail off into the void as much of OOTP did. My true test is whether the score can stand on its own. Will I be able to listen time and again with the same sense of discovery. I truly hope so.

These sound great!!!! People, these are not even on the songs, the soundtrack has more songs on it and also these are 14 SECOND CLIPS you can not judge it yet, geeze you people love to criticize! I think these previews sound fantastic!!!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 12:26:22
YEEEESSSS!!! im so thrilled, some do sound like jokes, but inferi in the firstorm is just like possession but a reprise, and i absolutely love it!!! im so glad hes using other themes!!! The weasley stomp is an alteration of fireworks!!! but we cannot judge it yet!!! Im freaking out, ive waited 2 years for another soundtrack, i cant wait!!!!

Weird. Dont like it at all.

The people here who actually like this stuff are just blind fans. OotP was NOT a very dark film. PoA was clearly the darkest. What theyve shown in the trailers of the HBP seems like its darker than PoA, but the soundtrack just killed it. Patrick Doyle did a TERRIBLE job with GoF, then Hooper did ok with OotP. But compared to PoA, Doyle and Hooper are the dust under Williams feet. OotP was a BAD movie but the music was alright compared to GoF. I cant believe theyd choose some dude Hooper, a name I d never really heard of untill OotP. Williams is a multiple-Academy Award winnig composer. Hes score Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, the iconic Star Wars, and not to mention... Schindlers List. If they didnt want Williams, then they couldve gotten Michael Giacchino, his stuff on the new Star Trek is absolutly fabulous, and not to mention hes Academy Award Nominated. If they wanted something darker, they couldve gotten Hans Zimmer, atleast hes popular. But Nicholas Hooper???

When Ginny kissed Harry is charming. And Im nervous because I didnt catch the motif that had been along the Harry and Dumbledore on the rock episode in the trailer, which I think is the best - guess I should hope it was just let out. And GOOOOOOOSH, I cant wait to hear the full version!!! And guys, will you make a Mugglecast episode out of this?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 13:44:18
Hmm, sound a little angry and pessimisstic there "MrPoe".. a lil too moody for Poe himself.. calm down will ya? lol. Anyway yes Williams music i do like, but cut Hooper some slack. i thought Possession was the most riveting of his pieces and HBP should be no different, i just cant judge them because being a MUSIC MINOR, we must first listen to the WHOLE repertoire before judging.. thats like seeing 10 seconds of HBP and judging the movie.. lol. And saying a composer is good because of their awards is like saying Steven Spielberg was the RIGHT man to direct the HP movies AFTER ALL.. since hes won soo many awards and he was about to do it anyway. thats just Ludicrous.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 14:09:12
I will say this, the music is a lot more upbeat and optimistic when compared to the somber sounds of OOTP. Each movie has its signature, and the soundtrack is what helps define that. It has already been said that this movie is more playful than the others, and that is the exact sensation and feel I got when listening to the music. I agree that John Williams is well-known for creating the most memorable of themes, the one for HP included, but its interesting to hear what other composers are bringing to the films. We were lucky John Williams was there to compose the first three films, but now, let another person fill those shoes. I think Nicholas Hooper has added a unique and sophisticated sound to the movie, and I am almost certain that--once the movie is out--we will not be disapppointed by the end result.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 14:14:58
MrPoe...just because we like this music, doesnt mean we are "blind fans"...the fact that you are only holding fast to your own opinion and calling other wrong is completely immature and very disrespectful. An opinion is just that: it is ones belief about a specific topic...you can not call others wrong for having a differing belief about a soundtrack than you hold. I, personally, respect your opinion and I agree that John Williams is a FANTASTIC composer. However, I also love what I have heard so far from Hoopers Half-Blood Prince soundtrack...I am sorry if you can not accept that some people may genuinely like his music, but please do not criticize others for holding an opinion that is different from your own, PLEASE :) :)....Plus, let me say again that you have heard nothing but 14 second previews of each of the songs on this list (not to mention, we have only heard half the songs that are even on the soundtrack...there are a total of 28 tracks on the half-Blood prince soundtrack, so this isnt even close to being all of them). You have no idea whether or not these songs are going to be good or not, because you have only heard little snippets! Please dont judge it until you hear it, just because you love John Williams more than Nicholas Hooper...and dont criticize others for their opinions. That is all.

I like the big band swinging style of Wizard weezes. I also love the intricate play of the strings, baritone, and english horn that I felt was laking in the last hooper soundtrack. I think Hooper has finally come into his own with this one.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 14:33:45
some of it doesnt sound like music that belongs in Harry Potter but i like it and it certainly makes this movie different in a good way because i like the music
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 15:15:28
This doesnt sound like Harry Potter music at all. Its not magical...Its cheesy and obnoxious. I realize Williams isnt doing them anymore, but at least Hooper could try and incorporate some of Williams style, other than Hedwigs Theme. The music makes me nervous for the movie...bad soundtracks can really bring down a movie! DO NOT LIKE.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 15:30:29
ill be in line for this as I have all the other ones. im not crazy about the fact that they changed the name of HEDWIGS THEME to GINNY when we all know its hedwigs theme. anyway, i agree with tbc07, we only heard 14 seconds of each. some of the songs were good and then again.....well, we all have our own opinion. plus, i wasnt crazy about COS soundtrack but i have it anyway. but...thats just my opinion. Hopefully itll all sound good when we see the movie!!!! p.s.-----kudos to the person who put this
together!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 15:41:40
tbc: Your first comment made no sense. You say you cant judge the music because theyre only 14 seconds long but you also say how you think theyre great. Hm. And phoenixknighter: The Steven Spielberg thing is completely different. John Williams has already composed for Harry Potter so we know what kind of job he would do, and he did an awesome score. So, we believe no one can beat him. Steven Spielberg has never directed a Harry Potter movie so that is a completely different topic. And just because Possession, in your opinion, was "riveting", doesnt suddenly mean these previews were good. All in all, PS, CoS, and PoA had easily the best scores. GoF and OotP was all right. And these previews were ... not that great. ALSO, just because you study music doesnt mean you are the person who gets to decide if these previews are good or not. ;)

i have loved all of the soundtracks to the harry potter movies except for OOtP. i still liked it, just not as much. i really cant wait to hear the rest of the tracks when the soundtrack comes out. and we have to realize that every composer is different and they will interpret the part in the movie differently, and therefore write the music accordingly. i know john williams started it all and that he was prolly the best so far, and i agree that with the rest of the movies the new composers need to try to incorporate his work in as much as possible. and i agree with tbc07. what may also help is that the fans that have years of music experience may be able to understand what im talking about (composers interpreting things different), while those who just listen to the soundtrack with little to no musical experience may not understand. im not trying to upset anybody with this statement, im just saying. i listen to movie soundtracks all the time. thats really all i listen to. and from wht ive heard so far, it sounds really promising. btw, i have been involved in music my entire life, and i am in school to become a composer/arranger and a music teacher.

it sounds great but when does it get released?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 16:06:15
Chommy, what I said was I liked the previews, which I can validly say! MrPoe was bashing the ENTIRE soundtrack and saying that the entire score was awful and I pointed out that you can not judge an entire soundtrack by 14 second previews. However, I also said that I respect others opinions and I would not have said a word had MrPoe said that the previews he heard werent good but he would reserve judgment for the entire score until after they had actually heard the score! So, you can keep arguing if you would like (which is something you love to do, as Ive seen on other boards), but I am not going to argue any more about an opinion that I have...I do not have to justify it, its my opinion, you should respect it, as I respect yours! I respect that some people dont like what theyve heard so far, however I think that as a fandom, we should reserve judgment of the score completely until after weve heard the entire thing...hopefully that makes more sense to you because apparently I wasnt clear before. Also (this is directed to whoever is saying it, not Chommy), what gives you the right to say what type of music belongs in a harry potter movie? Are you the music professionals trained in this branch of work? Are you the director or the producers who say what type of style they want for this film? No, I do not believe you are. I know some people dont like what theyve heard, and thats cool! But just dont say how the movie is ruined now, because um well you have not seen it.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 16:19:06
chommy .. Theres something called OPINION,, and therefore i am ALLOWED to give mine, so live with it. You have your opinion which is NOT a fact at all. so ill live with it. btw, i thought you dont usually comment on these boards.. what changed your mind now? And studying music has EVERYTHING to do with judging it... i know that its NOT SMART to judge a 10 second music just like its not smart to judge a 10-second movie. Make of that what you will.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 16:47:15
tbc: I understand what youre saying. Thanks for clearing it up. :) And no, I dont LOVE to argue, I just like pointing out things that dont make sense ... which THEN turn into arguments. ;) And phoenixknighter: I never said anything about your opinion being wrong. All I said was you cant say the previews are really good just because you thought one music off of OotP was riveting. And you answered the question yourself. I dont USUALLY comment on the boards. This is my first time in a while. And I wanted to express my opinion. And, once again, I never said that studying music has nothing to do with judging. Im just saying those who are studying music should not act like their opinion is superior to everyone elses. And your "judging 10 secs of music is like judging 10 secs of a movie" argument is wrong. Music is 3-5 minutes (ish). Movies are 2 hours (ish). iTunes posts 30 secs of songs so you can judge them before you buy. If they posted 30 secs of a movie, would you be able to judge it? No, because its a completely different thing.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 16:55:06
No prob Chommy, glad I cleared it up :) haha, thats true I suppose!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 17:22:52
The thing is, none of the music really stands out! There are no massive themes and it sounds too bland! The orchestration could do with more thickness for a start.
And what really sticks out are the jazzy cues. The compositions are nothing special, just your average jazz hook. Take a look back at POA and the Knight Bus music (Amazing dizzy jazz piece) and then the thin textured simple Hooper jazz for the wizarding wheezes. I just dont think we can expect much more to be honest!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 17:30:23
THEPIANO1991...)You do not know that there are no massive themes!!!!!! I am sick of people judging the entire score based on SECONDS of previews!!!!! Merely SECONDS! You have no idea if there is a massive theme to his score because you have NOT heard it yet!!! Gosh, chommy, see what I mean????? Hahaha
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 17:42:39
yeah youre right chommy, 30 seconds sounds MUCH better than 10 seconds. and btw, i dont think my musical judgement is superior to others, cuz for one thing im a music minor, not a music major lol. Ive been playing the piano for about 12 years but yeah. anyway we can ALL agree that were excited for John Williams to return for the final 2 Potters.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 18:56:17
The problem that I have with what Ive heard so far is that everything seems so unoriginal and "been there , done that" as far a movie scores go. I know we cant judge it yet since these are only previews, but as of yet Ive heard more impressive scores for video games.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 21:54:49
mr poe knows all, i agree with everything he says.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 22:27:38
gefr327, this must mean you are disrespectful and immature about other peoples opinions as well. Congratulations, you are a jackass.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-21 22:57:56
Hooper has done a fine job. I love it. No one can compose like the original one. I feel the theme suited the corresponding scenes well. We should all wait for more complete previews on Amazon. Its just 10 seconds guys!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-22 03:48:27
wumples, that is exactly what im saying. And TBC07, Nicohlas Hoopers music is the same in everything, more like ambient background music than Hollywood extravegance. I know im judging on such small clips, but after OTTP I just dont like his style. Like people are saying, it is disturbing to me to read that WB are choosing an Unknown over Oscar Nominated/winners, its not right.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-22 06:45:05
Contrary to most people I actually love Hoopers HP scores and cant wait for this one! I know you have to listen to it during the film but other than that you dont have to buy the CD afterwards.... I too am s little upset about JWs absence but its done now so lets just be excited about the film :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-22 09:07:40
ITS AMAZING!!!!! I love Nicholas Hooper!!!!! I cant wait to purchase this soundtrack!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-22 09:11:46
thats all good THEPIANO1991, and I respect that you dont like his style! I personally loved the OOTP soundtrack, so I guess that is why I am more accepting of these little previews, because I like his work elsewhere! I agree with you in the fact that John Williams should have scored every single one of the films, however since they didnt, we cant judge the score of the movie based on a bitter feeling we have towards WB for choosing unknowns over Oscar Winners...did they even ask John Williams to come back for any of the films or did they just pick other people?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-22 10:33:13
tbc07I think John Williams had previous engagements when GOF came out so Patrick Doyle got the job. However I do believe he was up for OOTP, but when David Yates got the job he aprarently had countless meeting with WBs to get Hooper the job... perhaps the best thing to happen to a composer in a long long time! Its jsut beyond me thats all, I cant get over the fact that happend. I just hope the soundtrack does prove me wrong about how I think the score will turn out, time shall tell!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-06-22 14:40:04
My favorite tracks are "DUMBLEDORES FAREWELL" "WHEN GINNY KISSED HARRY" "THE FRIENDS" "INFERI IN THE FIRESTORM" "FOR LOVE AND WAR" and "WEASLEYS WIZARD WHEEZES!" All of those are brilliant! I cant wait to hear the whole thing. I love Nicholas Hooper!!
|

Eh. Heres my analysis of the soundtracks, from best to worse:
Chamber of secrets trailer, Prisoner of Azkaban(not the trailer), Half- Blood prince trailer, Philosophers Stone, Goblet of Fire, Chamber of Secrets, Half- Blood Prince, and The Order Of The Phoenix.
