You may remember earlier this month there were rumors that Nicholas Hooper would not return to compose Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, and we can now confirm that he, in fact, is stepping down.
iF: After two POTTER movies, and I imagine the next two, do you hope to bring your own wealth of themes to Harry that will be as memorable as the music that started it all?
HOOPER: I have made the decision not to do the next two HARRY POTTER films. I’ll be handing the baton on to another composer. It has been a roller coaster ride, and, I feel, an enormous privilege to have the opportunity to have scored such great films and such a fantastic story.

Cant say Ill miss him. While he did certainly make some good themes for the Potter films, his work was nothing compared to Williams or even some of Doyles stuff. Hopefully Williams will take back what is rightfully his and finish the series off with a bang!

He and John Williams did excellent jobs. I love the song he composed called Rons Victory in HBP. He was very good. I wonder if Williams will take over.

I really dont want to put down Hooper because I have not heard any other music that he has composed, but I must say he didnt live up to the standard set by John Williams (then again, who could?)
Hopefully Williams will take over again! I just recently re-watched the first few films, and the music has SUCH a presence that it basically makes the films! I really hope they bring JW back because he is simply AMAZING!

i think he did an excelent job and maybe him handing down the baton is a good thing? he sur had his reasons for it. i just hope that it turns out for the best and the last two movie just get better from here. =]

I liked all of the Harry Potter composers equally. Well, alright...John Williams was a bit above the rest. But coming from a composer, I like the styles set forth by the three of them. They all set the tone of the movies rather well, and I particularly liked Doyles take on Hedwigs theme. However, I do hope that in the next one, whether it is John Williams or not, that the composer takes some of the themes from the originals...like the rest of Hedwigs theme, and even maybe a sadder part of Dobbys theme. Also parts of Harrys Wondrous World would be cool. Even Something Wicked This Way Comes, but a slower and lower version, or like Window Into the Past or whatever its called, that would be cool. Even a take on the theme when Harrys walking down to face Quirrel in the first one. And even take from the other three...a darker, less cheery version of Umbridges theme would be cool. But they would also have to be original, of course! I dunno. I hope the new composer is someone really good, like the last three.

Thank goodness!!! I really hope John comes back to finish the series music with a bang.

I dont know much about the composers but Ill say this: I dont care who takes over in his place i just know ill like them just as much!

Ive gotta be honest, and this opinion is obviously not very popular judging from these comments, but Im not a big fan of Williams. I mean, he used to be great, but now everything he does just seems SO repetitive to me. Its all slight modifications of themes for other movies he scored. Id like to see Howard Shore or Bear McCreary take a crack at it. If you are unfamiliar: Howard Shore scored the LOTR films, and Bear McCreary scored Battlestar Galactica and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I think if they did it the score for the next films would be EPIC! I can already imagine what Bear McCrearys music for the "The ministry has fallen

Hooper was amazing...I own the OotP soundtrack and listen to it all the time. Beautiful stuff.
Nothing beats JW, though...dude is epic. So many major movie scores came from him- Harry Potter, Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, ET, Jaws, Jurassic Park...

my hats are off to mr. nicholas hooper. he has done brilliantly with ootp and hbp. now that hes not doing the final 2, i do hope they get JOHN WILLIAMS back and let him finish what he had started.. =)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 01:11:47
I really liked the music he compoased, especially in HBP, I thought it was brilliant! I do hope John Williams comes back though, since it would be great for him to finish what he started.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 01:15:37
I really enjoyed his music. OotP has my favourite soundtrack of the films, and I loved his work for HBP. However, its always great to have new styles for the soundtracks. It seems as though the last two films are going to be unlike the others, so maybe a new composer is the best thing for the films. Hooper has done a great job!

@beatkicks, thats exactly what I was thinking. Especially Howard Shore. Every time I think of the score for LOTR, I get chills. Actually, I get chills when I think of LOTR period.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 01:34:14
I want hans zimmer to compose at least the battle scene! that would be pure epicness there!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 02:03:49
BRING ON JOHN WILLIAMS :) Hes like the BANG for fine music in films nowadays. His work has been absolutely phenomenal.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 02:06:03
beatkicks - I am SO, SO with you on Bear McCreary. I kind of worship him for his BSG score. Songs like "The Shape of Things to Come", "Roslin and Adama", "Worthy of Survival", and his version of All Along the Watchtower were all so epic and beautiful. Frak, if he did HP I think Id actually have a fit of happiness.

Sweet...I hope John Williams comes back...
Oh, and thanks for posting this "Andrea" =P

pleaspelapslepleplsplepls lps john williams come back.
though, hooper you did a great job!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 05:21:45
Oh shucks. Its a shame he isnt doing the next one because the last two soundtracks were really great, Ive really been enjoying Deathly Hallows. Hopefully well see John Williams doing the seventh or maybe even Hans Zimmer, that would be cool.

eatkicks & alex_c98 YES SIR!!
I AGREE!
I am with you on Bear McCreary too!
the Reuntiting the Fleet, Roslin & Adama & Something Dark is Coming
are my fave themes!
He is a great composer!
Another of my choices wuld be Jerry Goldmsith but he is sadly no longer with us

This sucks, but I completely understand why he wouldnt want to continue. Im sure working on films as huge as the Potters can be very exhausting. But I really LOVE the two soundtracks he did. Theyre the only ones that I own. I think Nicholas Hooper is amazing. I hope we can get John Williams back since we cant have Hooper...but thats not really guaranteed to happen. He might be too busy and we could end up with someone completely new or maybe they will bring back Patrick Doyle.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 07:27:08
I have to say Nick Hooper did a great job on the soundtracks,
If you look at Star Trek as a series different composers were used throughout the series history each one using their own tune.
Harry Potter is no exception & they did they right thing by NOT using John Williams all the time & Im glad they didnt by giving others a try & using their themes too.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 07:31:12
If we cant get Williams then my top 3 are: HANS ZIMMER, HOWARD SHORE, and PATRICK DOYLE...but I really HOPE we get Williams. I checked his imdb.com profile and he doesnt seem that busy right now, but he has three films coming out in 2011.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 08:04:53
OMG that kinda sucks as I liked his 2 scores. Hope WB will ask Williams to take his rightfull place!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 08:20:57
I dont enetirelly have a prefrence, but since John Williams started it, it would be great if he did the final two, and plus PoA was the best soundtrack. And the only one that made my cry, just by the music.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 09:38:15
aw man; i really liked his scores :[ but if john williams came back to do DH... thatd be incredible. or howard shore or hans zimmer.... as;lfkaj;slfkj;asf im sure whoever they get will be great :]
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 09:47:24
oh PLEASE im hoping John Williams will return because his scores were so incredible memorable. When you think of Harry Potter, his themes come to mind. The other composers had nothing as memorable in their soundtracks, and it would only feel right if John Williams was there to finish what he started
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 10:01:26
I enjoyed his scores better than Williams! Oh well. Hopefully Williams learned something from his style.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 10:04:54
I do think Hooper did an amazing job, but he could never compare to John Williams... you cant think of the Harry Potter movies without thinking of his songs. *fingers crossed for him to come back*
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 10:34:50
YES! YES! YES! I am so happy with this news.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 11:18:35
I liked Nicholas Hoopers scores. Ah well. I think the best way to go out is if they get John Williams back and hope he doesnt use the same songs over and over again.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 11:25:29
As much as I would love John Williams to return, we cannot say Nicholas Hooper did a bad job. I take my hat off for him. Now I want John Williams to start where he ended: POA. What a fantastic score that was! Only he can make Harry Potter music to what it is as of today. Its destined for him to finish the series as well.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 12:05:59
I agree with most everybody and I think that it would be cool if John Williams came back and did the last two scores. That way, he could sort of tie together his scores with the last three and make it all fit. Hooper did a good job and I like his scores but Williamss scores are epic in the way that they make you think of Harry Potter.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 12:16:40
I totally agree - although I really have enjoyed Hoopers HBP soundtrack, I was dumbstruck that they would so dispense with Hedwigs theme. Like Mission Impossible, like the Lord of the Rings, like it or not, Harry Potter has a definitive, identifying theme that I cant wait to see make its return.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 14:32:54
I didnt like his "Order of the Phoenix" work, but "Half-Blood Prince" simply won me over. With darker work I knew he wouldve done spectacular in the final film, but well see what John Williams brings back to the franchise, that is assuming the final composer is Williams.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 16:58:44
pygmypuff811: OMG I would probably die (of joy) if Howard Shore did DH, hes an absolute legend :) Hans Zimmer would be a good choice too
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 16:58:56
John Williams has been missed and will hopefully jump on board for at least the final battle - can you imagine the epicness to which John Williams would score it?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 17:32:06
I think its time for Hooper to step down. I wasnt particularly impressed with his themes (although I thought the Fred/George theme was fun). I would absolutely love it if John WIlliams took up the baton again because his music was PHENOMENAL!!! He was the one who came up with that legendary harry potter theme in the first place!!!! Whooo! Go John williams!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 18:32:31
If they did it together that would be great.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 18:40:46
Im very upset! Hooper captured the darkness element so beautifully and started up some beautiful love themes!! I hope the next composer will use some of them to keep it consistent! Ive heard Williams scores for his darker movies such as star wars! It all sounds the same! Hes not a ood candidate for Hp7!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 20:13:15
shut up awefrk33. john williams is the one hoo created hedwigs theme, basically the theme song of harry potter. and star wars has probably the best theme song and score ever so i dont noe what ur talking about.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 20:34:02
Im saying its too playful!! and didnt mean fior u to get all deffensive! just stating my opinion like everyone else!! but i didnt bash on em!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 21:30:23
awwww. well it was nice to have him start the films. i mean seriously EVERYONE knows the harry potter/ hedwigs theme now...but im glad too that hooper will be finishing it.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-25 21:42:21
I agree with a previous commenter; whoever composes Deathly Hallows should really take advantage of the brilliant themes John Williams and Nicholas Hooper have written.

I didnt used to like him... But his music was growing on me..... I personally liked the Room of Req. and Flight of the OotP... But if John W. comes back I will be absolutely delighted!!! :D
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-26 06:01:11
WILLIAMS FOR DEATHLY HALLOWS!! :D i thought doyle and hooper did great jobs... but williams just tops them all. his scores were AMAZING. (:

There is only one thing id like to say:
JOHN WILLIAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-26 13:19:03
I would love Jerry Goldsmith but he his sadly no longer with us.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-26 14:32:49
If Williams cant come back, I wouldnt mind that Bear McCreary suggestion. My personal favorite to do this would be James Newton Howard. He does some really amazing stuff and Id love to hear his take. But Williams would bring it full circle and Id really appreciate that.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-26 17:22:14
glad to see John Williams returning, just like Kloves came back.. so far as The horrible director who made "I Love You Beth Cooper" (Chris Columbus) DOESNT RETURN Im good with that.. but of COURSE he wont return, its too late in the game, lol
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-26 19:00:37
ahhhh i thought doyle did the worst, if thats who did gof. music was way over the top for that movie. too many extremely loud horns. hope john williams comes back

My first comment ever on MuggleNet!!
If I could choose my dream composer for Deathly Hallows it would be Eric Whitacre who is my favorite living composer (find him on myspace). I think he would really be able to embody some of the emotinonally pivitol moments of DH. I absolutely adore John Williams and will be ecstatic if he is truely back. Whoever is chosen I just hope they familiarize themselves well and do this movie justice, a good movie is nothing without its music such as a comedy is nothing without its prerecorded laughter in the background.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-07-30 07:42:56
Suppose neither Williams, Doyle or Hooper end up returning, Who would you want to see be the 4th Harry Potter composer. Harry Gregson-Williams, John Debney, Hans Zimmer and John Powell are a few that come immediately to mind.
