Dan Radcliffe to undress for 'Equus' role
The Herald Sun recently conducted an interview with Dan Radcliffe, in which he discusses Movie 7, "Equus," December Boys, and more. He mentioned that, although he talks to Jo about the Harry Potter books, he is never given any inside information on Book 7.

"I think it will be quite exciting really. It may be the only way (the arch villain) Voldemort could be killed is if Harry dies as well because there is that very strong connection between them."

We told you recently that Dan would play the starring role, Alan Strang, in London's West End play Equus. At the time, there was some confusion over whether or not Daniel would perform the part nude, as is usual.

"All the other actors who have played the part have done that, so for me not to do it wouldn't really be playing the part. It would be a watered down version. It wouldn't be the same. I'll be incredibly nervous, but I think, 'It's in the script; it's got to be done'. I'm terrified, but excited."

omg. NAKED?! yea. ill be there.

Posted by Gotpotter269 Aug 13th 2006

ok people, i am going to be very frank, i have a crush on dan, and i'm a lot younger, well kinda, and i'm american. and even though i like him, and i'm american, i don't have any interest in seeing the play. for those of you that think that the American girls are the only grose ones, think again, cause most of the freakish girls who desperatley want to see dan naked are British! so if i were you, i'd face the facts and except that you're wrong!

Posted by darkeyes Aug 13th 2006

I really can't believe he's going to do it! I just read the interview and I was like what the hell????? but at least he's going for more mature roles now. and it least its a watered down veresion. I WANT TO WATCH!! *goes off to buy tix which arent' even available yet!)

Posted by Anaela Aug 13th 2006

oh lord... the poor boy. photos are going to circulate the internet for aaaaages.... im sure people (ie rabid fangirls) will sneak in cameras somehow yea its a bit lame that everyones all ZOMG NEKKID DAN!!11!!one!!11!!eleven!!11!111 because... yeah. its really pathetic. Mmm. Grow up.

Girls and boys: actors of all ages, shapes, sizes, and sexes get nude for roles all of the time. This does not mean that they are lowering themselves, are lacking in morals, or are just getting naked for money. Sometimes it is necessary for the sake of the movie or play. I understand that some people have a problem with nudity. In that case, you should not see this play. However, many people do not have a problem with nudity and obviously Daniel Radcliffe is one of these people. He is mature and serious about his career. I'm sure this play could be done without the nude scenes, as the plot seems very interesting- but the choice to include the nudes scenes seems completely reasonable, and I'm sure it will add to the artistice quality of the play- for those who are mature enough to handle it.

Posted by panic_method Aug 13th 2006

i dont care about his naked ness...but the thing is that...why is he always exciteD?

Posted by ema Aug 13th 2006

i'm excited

Posted by HogwartsHag Aug 13th 2006

If I had as much money as he does I'd be excited too.

Posted by Gotpotter269 Aug 13th 2006

does he even know what he's getting himself into? plus, i don't see how he can go from good boy harry potter, to a mature part and back again. it just wouln't be the same! I don't think he's right about the "Harry potter is going to die" part either.

Posted by amanda Aug 14th 2006

hahahha oh wow. I HAVE TO SEE THIS PLAY.

Posted by arabesque Aug 14th 2006

OMGOMGOMG I don't know what to think.

Posted by sirusstar Aug 14th 2006

Thats interesting...

"If the script does justice to the book." Is that a shot at Steve KLOves? If it is then I agree. Kloves hasn't done a decent job of adapting the books on screen. The complexity of Harry's character is not explored enough and it seems that Dan is underchallenged by this. Let's all hope that Kloves will have attended some writing workshop before attempting to write the HBP script. As for Dan's nudity in Equus, sigh... I guess that's official now. But I'm still hoping it's not total nudity. There are many ways of giving that illusion without going all out. I take my hat off to you Dan Radcliffe. Six weeks of doing that night after night will challenge the most serious theater actor.

Posted by blastedgoose Aug 14th 2006

THAT is gonna get the play a LOT of fans.

Posted by iheartmugglecast Aug 14th 2006

THE HERALD SUN IS AN AUSTRALIAN NEWSPAPER!!!! I ACTUALLY READ THAT ARTICLE, I WAS LIKE 'OMG', REALLY PUMPED AND EXCITED BECAUSE IT WAS ABOUT HARRY POTTER (IN A WAY!!!). I love it when Aussie's get mentioned, it makes us feel special cuz we don't get much credit sometimes... lol!!!

Posted by KitScott Aug 14th 2006

who wouldn't want to see that? i'd personally go for the story I love disturbed caracters, mind sickness. call me a freak but I have no intention of seeing Daniel naked. though it is very mature in him to be doing it and aparently being okay with it. and a lot of girls will go to this play only coz he's there.

Posted by hypocritical Aug 14th 2006

o_O Seriously, to those who say they're going to be watching this play just because Dan is going to be in the nude, have you even thought about what Equus is about?

Posted by Rommel Aug 14th 2006

DAN NUDE!!!!Will it be on the net.

Posted by anya25 Aug 14th 2006

Being that he will be under 18, wouldn't it be considered child pornography. I dunno what the laws are in England about that sort of thing, but I'm pretty sure it would be illegal if they are the same as here.

Posted by anya25 Aug 14th 2006

please forgive my use of here like i live at the center of the universe. I meant to say "in the US"

Posted by penwounds Aug 14th 2006

it is very unlikely that it will be on the net. It is very rare for these kinds of shows to be recorded. I like the story, I like that he's taking on a role that isn't loveable. This role sounds revolting yet strangely charismatic. Mixing it up.

Posted by Victori_Potter06 Aug 14th 2006

I have seen that play before, I can't wait to see what Daniel does with it... I know the nudity shouldn't be that big a deal, but I think after a Potter fan see's him in the play, they'll deff. never look at Harry the same way.

Posted by magicgirl_rulz_4eva Aug 14th 2006

evilbutsexy: The legal age in the U.K is actually 18. I forgot that Dan was only 17. Maybe he got some specail permission or something...?

Posted by englandrox Aug 14th 2006

Most of you won't be able to see the play as you live in America and the show i in London... am I right? I doubt the play will go on the net 'cz that's never happened before!

Posted by magicgirl_rulz_4eva Aug 14th 2006

gymgrl- i *think* that they said the play would be shown around March/April time. Dan's b-day isnt until July... So open day would be well before that

Posted by englandrox Aug 14th 2006

magicgirl_rulz_4eva : the legal age for WHAT, exactly? In England the legal ge for sex is 16, drinking 18, driving 17, but I don't know what you'rs talking about?!?

Posted by EmptyChild Aug 14th 2006

Now THAT took me by surprise, I guess Dan's full of suprises. I'm not one of those who want to see him naked through, I'm not that obsessed with him :p He's brilliant as an actor, especially in his HP role but that's as far as it goes for me, but I hope you guys have fun! :D

Posted by CrAzY_4_HP Aug 14th 2006

I know that he wants people to think of him as a serious actor, but surely this is taking it too far??

Posted by harry1991 Aug 14th 2006

don't do it dan it's stupid to do something like that , you'll lose your self respect and i will be disgusted if you did it (sorry mugglenet if i sayed something wrong)

Posted by harry1991 Aug 14th 2006

i totaly disagree with you jasmine and i say that NOTHING justifies going naked in front of people he will only lower himself and i was hoping from all my heart that i will never hear about ( Dan, Rupert or Emma ) doing something like that and the fact that other actors did it dosen't mean that Dan have to do it or justifies doing it again DAN DON'T DO IT !!! i am one of the fans that he will lose if he does it and i know that i am not alone in this and lots of people also think that he must not do it

Posted by TherealMrsRadcliffe Aug 14th 2006

wow, i think hes really brave, but the theatre will be full of screaming fan girls (but i shouldn't moan, i wouldn't mind being there to watch it

Posted by KitScott Aug 14th 2006

harry1991 --- darling, aren't you being a little bit dramatic, here? no... not really dramatic is a bit of an understatement. everyone has their right of thinking anything they want about this news but it's not like he's going to be there naked showing whoever wants to know what and exhibitting his parts. it is, after all, a piece of art.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Aug 14th 2006

Bravo, Dan! That's the mark of a true actor, going outside one's comfort zone in order to be true to the part. I hope the audience won't be filled with the sort of fan that will squeal, or otherwise make innappropriate noises during this scene.

Posted by AnyaMarcos Aug 14th 2006

These comments are sad. I know most of them are really young, but still. It's not like Dan's going to be working in a strip joint, for christ's sake. He has ONE scene in which he is going to be nude. All these kids who are going OMG DAN I DONT LUV U AN E MORE! are too young to see the play, anyway. It's an adult play with an adult theme. Anyone under 15 shouldn't see it, unless they have a genine interest in theater.

Posted by RavenclawWitch Aug 14th 2006

Though I'm not a real Dan Radcliffe fan, I still admire how brave and committed he is an actor. Good on you, Dan!

Posted by Carol61 Aug 14th 2006

Where can I buy omnoculars? But seriously...I can't imagine that Dan would have accepted the part in Equus with any other intention but to do the scene nude, because he really strikes me as being more mature than his years and he is serious about furthering his career. I expect making that decision was what took so long to confirm that he'd be in the play at all, because I'm sure it will be a bit difficult and uncomfortable for him. A strong performance in something like Equus can only help in establishing him as a capable actor, and I firmly believe he will do well in the role. But people - Harry Potter fans in particular - have got to stop evaluating every move he makes as if it were Harry doing it. It's not! It's Dan. And I just have to ask this ... and not really picking on anyone in particular, but WHY do people who feel Dan is a bad actor (or Emma, Rupert, etc.) spend their time making comments here? I always thought this was a place for those of us who love the magic.

Posted by Carol61 Aug 14th 2006

Oh, almost forgot, to iheartmugglecast (or anyone else who can), the photo/scan of the article cut off a bit at the bottom (at least it looks that way on my screen). Can someone post the wording between where it shows the bottom of the first strip (talking about Teresa) and the start of the little ending strip? I'd like to read the rest of it.

Posted by Gem Aug 14th 2006

Wait a minute! Does that mean that Daniel will be wholly naked or just his torso as in Gblet of Fire?

Posted by AnyaMarcos Aug 14th 2006

Wholly naked, Gem. That is what nude means. Dan's peepee will show. Actually I believe the scene they are talking about only shows the character from the back.

Posted by crookshanksG Aug 14th 2006

Dear quidditchplayer, I heartily accept your congratulations, and I would like to offer you a rebuttal. Please note that it is not my habit to converse with people comparing me to two-year olds; in this case, however, I am merely bored. First of all, I am not calling the play "Equus" "pornography". Although I haven't read the play myself, I am sure it would be a great piece of writing. I am, however, calling Daniel Radcliffe's rendition of Alan Strang "pornography". "Pornography" is defined (by Princeton WordNet) as "creative activity (writing or pictures or films etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire". Mr. Radcliffe, with not even enough acting ability to feed a fly for a day, cannot hope to create anything of "artistic value". As such, it is my conclusion that he is playing this role to merely "stimulate sexual desire" in adolescent fangirls (as witnessed in the comments above). Thus, we can unquestionably label Mr. Radcliffe's role as Alan Strang "pornography". Secondly, I am well aware that the Bathroom Scene in "Goblet of Fire" is canon. Its crude sexual innuendo, however, is not. Mr. Radcliffe, I'm sure, had a choice to refuse such a perversion of the book. He did not. His choice ultimately bolsters my previous proposition that he is preparing himself for a career in pornography. Lastly, you do bring up an interesting point. Mr. Radcliffe does have enough money to live out his lifetime. He just wants more of it, the greedy bastard.

Posted by Peevsie Aug 14th 2006

That is a bit surprising, it is an awfully... for lack of a better word, exposing thing to do, but at least he is willing to take on challenging roles.

Posted by bloodpromise Aug 14th 2006

crookshanksG: wether or not you think dan can act, the fact is that at least attempting to play an "artistic" role. i seriously doubt his intention is to "stimulate sexual desire" in fangirls - if anything, he seems nervous about being nude.. (and for you to assume he has such low intentions certainly says something about your mind).. secondly, you claim that he is "creating activity of no literary or artistic value (etc)" to back up your idea that this is porn. the "activity" itself - that scene in the play - IS of "literary and artistic value".. wether or not dan can pull off the part credibly or well enough does not make it porn.. that being said, i wish dan luck in this play as it seems to be a difficult and very mature role to play.

Posted by bloodpromise Aug 14th 2006

*he is at least attempting

Posted by sandra Aug 14th 2006

OMG!!! Don't do it Dan. Nude is overated yes but a lot of kids look up to you. You are hto and famous without having to bare yourself like that. And I think JK won't like that Harry Potter does nude. :(

Posted by Dan_Loves_Me Aug 14th 2006

I respect whatever he does. He wouldn't look so bad nude...lmao

Posted by ladyofemynarnen Aug 14th 2006

After reading one page of comments whose authors were primarily *squee*ing over the fact that Dan is getting nekked for this role ... I just think it's really sad that he's even doing this role in Equus, because it is vile and disgusting. I really don't see how anyone can find such a thing even remotely okay.

Posted by anya25 Aug 14th 2006

what I was refering to with the whole child pornography is the fact that not only will he be nakid but "simulating sexual extasy." Depending on the laws for child pornography that could certainly qualify as such.

Posted by miss_vj Aug 14th 2006

well tht settles this whole crazy naky thing!!!...i mean...hes 17!!!*blanches at sight of conformation*....HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! though i think i've lost a bit of R-E-S-P-E-C-T 4 him...if u kno wut i mean.....

Posted by soccerluver13 Aug 14th 2006

crookshanksG, I have one word for you. WOW. Even if you think he can't act, he's attempting an extremely mature role and I would give him credit for that. Anyway...Okay so some of you guys are being immature about this. This is a great move for Dan because hopefully people will take him as a more mature actor after this. It's a challenging role to play and I believe that he will do a great job.
