There are a lot of great classics at the top but Harry Potter beats them all! Also, Happy Birthday to me and my twin today!

Posted by Pride Jul 29th 2009

That sounds quite accurate! My mom loves the kite runner! 1st!!

Posted by HPFANTimothy Jul 29th 2009

TAKE THAT, TWILIGHT.

Posted by muggleinNM Jul 29th 2009

I've read all of these except teh kite runner, I suppose I should add it to the stack.

1. The Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling--YES! 2. To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee--AGREED 3. The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini 4. Bridget Jones's Diary, by Helen Fielding--I really hated that book. I mean, it was interesting, but really redundant. 5. Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen--Oooof course. 6. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, by Rebecca Wells 7. The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald 8. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams 9. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, by Fannie Flagg 10. The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver

Wow. That's an impressive list. Is this for real?

Posted by i_am_hermione Jul 29th 2009

What does that even mean? Best beach books?

Posted by hpintwense06 Jul 29th 2009

Awesome! haha, at first I was like... "Harry only goes to Shell Cottage which is kinda beachy... but that's all I can think of..." and then I was like, " OH. As in, best books to read AT the beach!" LOL. I like this list... although I really did not like The Great Gatsby. It just didn't stand out to me. And I love that Twilight is only #30... Potter is #1!!!!!!! :)

Posted by i_am_hermione Jul 29th 2009

Okay I guess beach books means fun things people like to read (the Lord of the Flies?? I hated that book. I mean, interesting literature, sure, but fun to read at the beach? no way.) But way to go Potter! Someone in the comments there is like, Harry Potter is only for people that don't like to read, and I'm like, eh? Don't like to read? Maybe it gets people hooked on reading that didn't before, but Potter appeals to all! Plus, people that vote on NPR are likely to be the smart, bookish type (read: LIKE TO READ)

Posted by theaterjunkie91 Jul 29th 2009

cuz we all love reading the great gatsby on the beach

Posted by hetalcb Jul 29th 2009

BEACH books? what does it mean?? I'm confused... you can see Draco here! http://www.hetalcb.dragon adopters.com/dragon_17486 3

Posted by aharleyrider4u Jul 29th 2009

I would say that would be a reasonably ordered list. I've read most of them and say that I'd concur with the list. But I'm not sure why they would call it a beach book, since few people I know have ever read it at the beach. LoL.

Posted by dolphingirltay Jul 29th 2009

Go JKR!!!!!! We love you! And, I agree, completely - Take That Twilight! :)

Posted by adriennecray Jul 29th 2009

Harry Potter rules! Love Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I actually read that at the beach last year, lol.

Posted by BellatrixCrucioYou Jul 29th 2009

Coinsidence? I am on vacation at the beach this week and I brought HBP along...fave in the series :)

Posted by gryffindor_2004 Jul 30th 2009

I love how four of my favorite books are on this list! Harry Potter To Kill a Mockingbird Pride and Prejudice The Great Gatsby I must have a great taste in books!

Defnition of beach book: A book that you read while sunbathing because... ----Your ipod ran out of batteries. ----There is not that many good looking people around. ----It is simply enjoyable to listen to the waves and read.

Posted by iwantorlando05 Jul 30th 2009

Awesome!!! It most definitely it is...but it would take alot of time on the beach to read all 7 books. lol. That's an awesome list! Pride and Prejudice is another one of my absolute favorites, so is To Kill a Mockingbird. Alot of the others are on my "Books I Wanna Read" list.

Posted by ecniv08 Jul 30th 2009

does beach books mean books you should read on the beach? LOL. that's the logical explanation i can think of. help?

Posted by SnivillusSev Jul 30th 2009

I wouldn't want to get sand in my Potter books. To be honest, I'm pretty impressed HP is way up there, whatever this list means :)

Posted by hetalcb Jul 30th 2009

JKR, You simply Rock! :D Twilight is a good book, but story wise it doesn't even compare to harry Potter. HP series has a very very solid and powerful story and the way it is written by JKR is simply amazing. I, for one, started reading because of the Harry Potter series. I'm really glad it has topped the list. Twilight, meanwhile, is a good teenage romance book. Edward Cullen is probably the hottest fictional character ever. But that's just it. It doesn't really have a very solid story to back up the character. The last couple of books were kind of a drag. And you can see Draco here! http://www.hetalcb.dragon adopters.com/dragon_17486 3

Posted by Alem Jul 30th 2009

Awesome... But personally I've always consider HP an airport/airplane (or any tipe of waiting room) book, I don't recall ever actually reading a book at the beach I usually read magazines they're easier to carry around and if they get wet it's not big deal... But it's really cool that other people do read Harry at the beach. Yay JKR!

Posted by Ruubski Jul 30th 2009

HA! I brought Deathly Hallows to the beach a few weeks ago.

Posted by Lordofwrath88 Jul 30th 2009

The Great Gatsby? I know its a classic, but I could never under stand that thing. That and "Heart of Darkness." Both very hard to read. But not the good ole Boy Wizard, he's never boring

Posted by JRP_LOVES_SNAPE Jul 30th 2009

That's so funny! To Kill a Mockingbrid is my favorite non-Harry Potter book!

Posted by Hermioneisme Jul 30th 2009

In fact, the HP books used to be out in the summer... maybe that's why? I never read HP on the beach because of the sand but I did in public pools.

Posted by weasleygrl94 Jul 30th 2009

yay!! i always read hp at the beach

Posted by pygmypuff811 Jul 30th 2009

haha yaaaaaaaay! i've read 1 2 and 3. i feel so beachy! :]

Posted by Mrsroonil_wazlib Jul 30th 2009

Yay! Go Hp! I wish I could go to the beach. :(

Posted by Saint_Potter Jul 30th 2009

The Harry Potter books and To Kill A Mockingbird are my favorites!

Saint_Potter 15 RULES.

Posted by hpfan4444 Jul 30th 2009

Wow! This is great.

Posted by miss_potter123 Jul 30th 2009

woohoo!!!! go harry potter!!!!! I guess that just shows how much better HP is than Twilight!! this is great!

Posted by MeyaRose Jul 30th 2009

What is The Great Gatsby doing there? That has got to be the lamest book in existence. The rest of them are pretty good, though, I LOVE The Poisonwood Bible and To Kill a Mockingbird and Pride and Prejudice. And Harry Potter, of course.

Posted by severus_snape15 Jul 30th 2009

yay harry potter #1 that's how it should be!!!!!! twilight sucks!!!!!!!!

Posted by Nattyfer Jul 30th 2009

I LOVE THE KITE RUNNER! its an amazing book. Everyone should read it. Hahaha, I agree with the ppl. TAKE THAT TWILIGHT.

Posted by Gryffindor_Seeker_7 Jul 30th 2009

Umm, I don't read at the beach. I guess HP could be my number 1 book to read on the way to the beach. And who would read Twilight (vomit) if you could be swimming?

Posted by nME Jul 30th 2009

Not surprised.. (: Twilight for #30? Spare me. The world is slowly becoming more stupid..

Posted by krazykobra29 Jul 30th 2009

the beach?? lol but YAY glad it won.

Posted by mugglelover927 Jul 30th 2009

two words......hell yeah

Posted by dwnpr0382 Jul 30th 2009

hmm...i suppose harry potter is a good read anywhere...but overall, i feel like whoever took the poll might have overlooked a few novels that would be especially enhanced by the beach (i mean seriously, the great gatsby?). eh, whatevs. :p

yay!!! i love some of those books/novels on the list, especially To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby!!! =]

Posted by twilight_hp_lover Aug 1st 2009

guess that pride && prejudice is really great, huh?

Posted by daisyalice001 Aug 1st 2009

Ok, I am soooo happy about HP being on top (i am a big Hp fan) but do all HP fans have to celebrate by trash talking Twilight??? Gosh, and I thought the boys in my 8th grade class were immature....

Posted by cgeinert Aug 3rd 2009

I'm thrilled that Harry Potter and To Kill a Mockingbird are numbers one and two. Both are at the top of my favorite books list. :)

Posted by cgeinert Aug 3rd 2009

I really wish The Princess Bride was higher up than 28th, though. William Goldman is brilliant.

Posted by ragein Aug 3rd 2009

I am so amused by this list. It is so obvious what kind of people NPR listeners are. Leo Tolstoy on the beach? Are you kidding me?! In fact (NPR listener that I am) I was listening to one of the news shows and the host was making fun of the list saying things like "You're supposed to hide your books behind an US Weekly!" But regardless, Harry SOOO belongs at the top. Those books make time fly.
