Daniel Radcliffe recently made a "major donation" to the Trevor Project--"a non-profit organization that operates the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth." "I am very pleased to begin my support of The Trevor Project, which saves lives every day through its critical work," said Daniel Radcliffe. "It's extremely distressing to consider that in 2009 suicide is a top three killer of young people, and it's truly devastating to learn that LGBTQ youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. I deeply hope my support can raise the organization's visibility so even more despondent youth become aware of The Trevor Helpline's highly trained counselors and Trevor's many other resources. It's vitally important that young people understand they are not alone and, perhaps even more important, that their young lives have real value." HaHaH! Finally made Number 1!!! Good for Dan to making a donation to a great cause, but coming shortly on top of his recent anti-homophobia announcement people might start wondering if he was gay. But its a great cause and good job to him.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 15:36:59

thats awesome what he did :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 15:53:57

Good for him! Do you think hes gay?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:19:00

Sometime I wonder myself if he is gay.... I certainly hope not. That is so cool that he would do that.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:25:18

Why would it matter if he is gay?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:30:10

Yes it would

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:32:03

@waterbug: why would it make a difference? O_o

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:32:05

I think hes gay, although I dont think that matters with donating to an organization like this. There are straight people in this world who care about gays.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:37:34

Good for Dan!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:38:02

Yes Thank you!!!!!!! some people do care if other people are gay. but I guess I shouldnt be sayin anything

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:43:35

I dont even know why I brought this up forget that I said anything

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:44:34

Good for you, Daniel!!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:49:10

It doesnt matter if he is gay or not. He is a human being who is demonstrating compassion. Really, waterbug...it doesnt make a difference.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:51:34

I love him! Hes amazing and this organization as well as others like it definitely deserve support! GO Dan!! And hes NOT gay! Lots of celebrities support issues like this but that has nothing to do with their own sexual preference. Theyre just doing the right thing!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 16:52:00

I think thats really great of him...Its a subject thats not widely thought about like third world poverty or abuse is...Plus, I dont think he is gay, and would it matter if he was? I think hes just making a donation that is close to his heart because in previous interviews he mentioned how he grew up around transvestites and gay people.

I always wanted to be in one of these little conversations that you guys have...I never thought it would be one where everybody is criticizing ME!! HAHA

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 17:14:19

Good for Dan. As a Bi teen who used to suffer with depression myself, its nice to know people do care. And what does it matter if hes gay or not? Hes the same great actor, and doesnt change anything. Plus, dudes, he has a girlfriend

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 17:25:37

Yay for my future husband! Love you Dan, speak your mind! Awesome story!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 17:42:53

DIrected @ waterbug: Im not sure anyone is criticizing you, they are just wondering why it matters if hes gay or not. Personally I dont think he is, but its great that yet another celebrity is coming out in support of gay issues. It doesnt really matter if hes gay or not. The fact that hes gay doesnt affect him as a person or an actor. Good for Dan to support such a great cause.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 17:49:48

he said that hes not gay, he just supports gay right and all that. go dan!!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 17:52:22

its good that he gets involved and wants to help make the world a better place!! keep up the good work dan!!!! :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 18:10:31

I dont think that hes gay. hes just like me- Ive grown up around gay people (my best friend of ten years is bi, as well as a number of my other close friends), so Im pretty accepting and supportive of it. If youve read various interviews with him, hes grown up around gay people as well and thats the reason why hes so supportive. I have a very developed gaydar (due to theatre and colorguard throughout high school ^_^) and Im quite certain that he isnt gay. I speak from experience when I say that it gets old when people think that youre gay due to association.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 18:18:49

go dan!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 18:50:11

"yet another celebrity is coming out in support of gay issues" ummm... riiig ht, SvenMarcel :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 19:52:21

He has dyspraxia, thats why he seems gay, because of his hyperness.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 20:15:01

Dan is eloquent in his desire to help others. Help is hard to accept sometimes, but if it can be a vital tether to existance itself, then suicide is less likely to be an option for a group which could include anyone (but for the fate we live).

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 20:34:41

As a person with a gay brother who has dealt with suicidal attempts before, this hits very close to home for me. Go Dan for supporting this great organization!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 20:39:17

Right on! Thats the kind of action that shows you support something, more than words, as they say. Go Dan!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 21:11:39

Good for him!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 22:10:13

Im glad he puts his words into action to support a worthy cause. For what its worth, I dont know if hes gay or straight, but I dont care. Hes got a good heart, and thats all that matters.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 22:29:47

Sadly, smoking is a choice. Ive just seen a photo of him sucking on a cigarette. Perhaps he should donate some of his wealth to cancer research. It might benefit himself in the long run.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 22:36:23

good for you, Dan! but whats with the facial hair? that picture makes him look like a werewolf!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 22:44:47

Thats nice of you Dan!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 23:23:32

I have a personal opinion about the way people sees their sexuality, but the kill yourself only because you can not say something or do something about it is wrong, this is that you quit life; and quit life is only for a person who does not want to fight. We need to make sure the people need to understand who he/she and not try to make it into something their are not. But I think this only can be done with love and prayers.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-10 23:24:06

I find it so funny that people still need to question if someone is gay when they support gay rights. I am a heterosexual ally, and I have been for years, yet people always ask if Im a lesbian when I tell them Im in the gay-straight alliance at my school. I dont have to have cancer to support cancer research, I dont have to be an endangered species to support animal rights and I dont have to be a child labourer in a third world country to support the fight against child labour. So why does he have to be gay to support gay rights?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 00:00:53

DUDE THIS IS SO COOL OF HIM! I like Dan a million times more now! And yeah, goooooood point Lost_House_Elf...I like that a lot...he doesnt have to be gay to do the right thing! Even if he was, that doesnt change that he is using his money for great things! Good job Dan, I love you.

I dont think I can adequately express how happy this makes me. Harry Potter and LGBT teen suicide have both had profound impacts on my life, and to see one combatting the other... I cant even complete that thought because, as my first sentence says, there are no words. If you read this, thank you, Daniel.

He grew up in an acting family and was around gay people all the time, you guys, so therefore he never had any aversion to homosexuals and the like, so thats why hes so tolerant and everything - it doesnt mean hes gay, though, himself. I do, however, applaud him for doing this. I love when celebrities donate to charities. :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 01:04:08

Daniel Radcliffe is a worthwile human being. That is the highest compliment I could ever give another person in todays society. It is much more than can say for many other young people with money and fame these days.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 03:23:35

I think its kinda funny that this is named trevor like Nevilles toad, but I think its really really nice of Dan to support this. It GMH. And yeah, you really dont have to be gay to support things like this. Btw, I notiiced that HP fans are most of the time very supportive to LGBT rights..

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 04:03:23

Brilliant. I always like to hear of celebrities supporting such causes. As being gay myself I know what a strain on life it can be, people not always accepting you, the curde jokes, treating you like a second class citizen etc. Things are a whole lot worse when you are young... all that hassle is all you need along with all the normal teenage problems... And people please, he has donated some money, stop speculating that is he gay for crying out loud. Well done Dan!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 09:19:11

Kost House Elf - Me too! My husband and I have been allies forever for LGBT stuff, and people assume we are both gay. Hello? Hilarious. And so awesome for Dan to support this. The suicide rate among questioning teens is unacceptable. Its time young people understood that, while it is sad that their families, church, and friends might reject them... they are worthy of great love and friendship, just like everyone else, and loved by God unconditionally.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 11:40:13

Anyone who worries about Dan being gay is a problem for them, HASNT LEARNED ANYTHING about tolerance in the HP books, or the fact that Dumbledore is gay.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 11:48:35

I dont really know or care if hes gay or not; I highly doubt any of us would have a chance with him anyway. :P So why does it matter? But its great of him to make that donation. Too few people really care about those kids.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 12:05:51

And this is why most celebrities are afraid to even mention the word "gay" because people assume that you have to be gay...Thats why what Dan does is even more amazing, he is one the few famous people who is not afraid to fight for what its right no matter what people may think. Its really sad so many people think about suicide, and even do it, because they are discriminated and feel so alone. I hope this makes more people aware of it and we all stop being so stupid and discriminatory.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 12:57:49

Hopefully Dan is NOT gay, but at least he is making a change!!!!!!! Go Dan!!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 13:14:02

And this is the reason why Dan is my favourite. He is such an amazing and compassionate guy - I think its fantastic that hes taken it upon himself to speak up for gay people and gay rights. And the fact that he isnt gay means I have even more respect for him. I think the reason that a lot of people dont want Dan to be gay is because that means theyll lose their precious dreams, wherein they get married to Dan and live happily ever after and have 12 children. Personally, Id be ten times happier if Dan did turn out to be gay. Hey, Ive lost my Radcliffe children, but Ive gained fantastic eye candy instead! ;D

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 13:18:28

Wow, goooo Dan! I am so happy to hear that he is taking a stand for this because i find it a very worth while cause. Suicide is terrible anyways, but it to hear that gay/lesbian ect. have a higher rate is just not okay. People should open their minds and welcome themselves to the 21st century. Congratulations Dan, Harry Potter would be proud (:

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 14:18:29

nice of him i dont think there is any reason to suspect that he is gay, i just think that he is open minded

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 15:17:38

House_of_Black you probably saw one of the promo photos for "Equus", and thats what made you think he smokes. His character in the play was a smoker, they probably gave him one of those fake herbal ones like they do in the movies. I doubt he does it for real.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 16:36:41

After his performance in HBP im convinced Dan is gay lol. Dont get me wrong, i love the gays , but I cant stand Dans acting.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 16:51:52

Thats really really great. This is a very important cause.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 18:22:52

Comments like these give me such high hopes for this generation! You are so accepting of gay/straight/bi people, unlike those older than you. Daniel Radcliffe is at the head of the curve, and I applaud him for following his heart with more than words.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 19:16:11

aww that is so sweet of him:) he cares:)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 19:58:01

Not that it really matters, but I thought I heard he had been going out with Laura, he met her while doing Equus in London. They broke up while he went to New York, but kept in touch and got back together when he went back to England. Dan seems to be a well rounded human being. Period. I find him a fascinating person when he is interviewed, mostly because he is so young. He analyzes his character and is prepared for questions and seems generally likeable. That is all that matters.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-11 21:55:03

that is sweet of him, even if Im not homosexual its sad to see any human die because they were rejected by certain people . . . thats cruel. . . . keep it up Dan . . .

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-12 03:37:02

Its funny how they named it after Nevilles toad. Hmm, now I wonder which way he used to swing...

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-12 09:33:02

what a wonderful thing to do!!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-12 16:12:34

What difference does it make to any of you whether hes gay or straight? I only skimmed through these comments, but there were definitely several that outright stated that they hoped he wasnt (gay, that is). Honestly, you guys should face reality: you havent got a snowballs chance of getting with him. Not necessarily because there is something wrong with you, but the same could be said of your chances of getting with ANY celebrity. As a matter of fact, no matter what his orientation, it shouldnt even throw a wrench in any of you guys Dan-centric fantasies. After all, that is the nature of fantasies, is it not? Imagining the impossible?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-13 20:51:12

Though Ive lurked for years, Ive set up an account so I can comment on this thread. Daniel has a maturity that is beyond his years and his generosity greatly appreciated. His sexuality is his business and quite irrelevant in regards to his character. I am taken aback by comments that state that the writers "hope" that Daniel is not gay. It is attitudes like this that make the Trevor Project necessary as glbt hear over and over again that there is something fundamentally wrong with them. Who they are is apparently so horrible, others hope that its not true. Im with Carlikinz; lets welcome others to the 21st Century where people are free to be who they are. The days of the closet that kill are over.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-13 23:36:45

To all the people with the ... "hes so not gay!" reaction...? Who the f*ck cares whether or not hes gay

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-14 15:08:52

That is awesome! I love the Trevor Project. Not only do I know people who were saved by that hotline, but they also helped me find services to get me through a really tough time in my life. This just makes my fondness for Dan even greater.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-14 16:32:31

Omg guys come on, hes donated some money. dont make him gay! Just stop ranting on about his sexuality, its sad! There are some of us out here who can be helped by this project and we know he just wants to help! I have been through all this SH*T all year and almost commit suicide myself christmas last year. I admire Dan, there are some celebs that wont do this for gays as they fear the speculation of them being gay! This takes **** and well done to Dan!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-17 21:18:46

LGBT teens are four times more likely to attempt suicide....And the majority of you are still trying to say LGBT are emotionally healthy...And before you say its because society wont accept them do you think that really flies in todays world? Well its their familys fault then....I know a woman whos family and friends accepted her "orientation" and she still talked suicide on a number of occasions.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-18 16:23:02

Mrsw (I cant bring myself to use your handle), you are aware that there are many well-adjusted glbt kids and adults, right? There are many reasons why some attempt and commit suicide, apart from sexual orientation, and different organizations attempt to provide help where they can. I lost a young cousin to suicide, and to the best of my knowledge, it was due to clinical depression as opposed to difficulty related to sexual orientation. However, the Trevor Project has a specific focus -- lgbt youth who are at risk. If you believe that a lifetime of receiving explicit and implicit messages that being glbt is inherently wrong (evil, ill) and others "hoping" that what is true of you, is not, has no effect on the glbt individual, you have very little insight into the topic. Further, you are also revealing no awareness of the individuals own difficulty in accepting who they are. The irony here is that JK Rowling, who has become a bit of a personal hero to me, has clearly stated that part of the intent of the Harry Potter series is a call to tolerance. Daniels gift is a tribute to that, while your comments would aim to further bias.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-18 18:21:02

Dumbledoreman....I appreciate your eloquence. So many others have responded to similar comments of mine with vitriol and name-calling. I DO know of a FEW well-adjusted glbt people but they are the exception rather than the norm. The orientation of those functioning members of society is between them and their personal deity. But as for the others, if its so healthy why should they have difficulty accepting who they are? And I do more than tolerate the homosexual. I love him or her dearly as another human being...one of Gods children. I am required, as are we all, to treat them with dignity and respect. That doesnt mean I have to accept their behavior.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-19 20:08:46

Mrs. W, Im too old, and the discussion way too important for name calling. However, I can see why you have received that action in the past, as you assume to know a great deal about a topic regarding which you have no personal experience. When you write things that are completely to the contrary of who people are, you will receive a strong reaction. Based on a very limited "sample," you have appeared to conclude that there are only a few well adjusted glbt people", but that this is an exception. You state that the individuals sexual orientation is "between them and their personal deity," implying that the individual has chosen their sexuality in consultation with a "personal deity." (Not quite sure what a "personal deity is, btw.). You state that "if its so health," suggesting that a same-gendered sexual orientation is inherently unhealthy. You say that you "love" the glbt individual because you are "required" to, but you dont "accept" their behavior (Not making a distinction between orientation and behavior, I might point out.).

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-08-19 20:24:11

(Since comments dont allow for paragraphing, Ill conclude in a second comment. I dont want this point to get lost.) Given all of the above assumptions, which the glbt individual receives from childhood on from peers, parents, church and blog comments, you then you wonder why someone would have trouble accepting themselves. I have to believe that weve entered parody and youre not being serious. The reason I contribute to such discussions when I encounter them is so that when the closeted glbt individual encounters attitudes based on bias, they find "well-adjusted" glbt individuals and allies exposing the lies. There is in fact, great peace that comes from living without masks -- living authentically. I speak from personal experience when I say that when I, in a conservative faith setting, believed as you prescribe, I was heading toward self-destruction. When I accepted the gift of who I was, I did not lose my faith, but rather completed it, and I was whole.
