Radcliffe on playing The Hobbit: "Thanks but no thanks"
Radcliffe on playing The Hobbit: If you're a Lord of the Rings fan you'll know that Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro are working on getting a Hobbit film made. In a new interview with The Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex blox, Dan Radcliffe made it clear that he won't be looking for any role like that once Potter is complete:

"I'd have to say, 'Thanks but no thanks,' not that anyone has asked me," the 20-year-old actor told me last week in England. "Honestly, I don't think they would want me anyway, it's just too close. Whatever I do next, I don't think there will be any wizards in it!"

Thanks to Maggie for the tip!

that's o.k. harry potter is better anyway! First!

Posted by krazykobra29 Aug 18th 2009

i thought not..oh well. i wonder who they get for it? should be a good movie.

Posted by rooon Aug 18th 2009

Wow. I can imagine that he wouldn't want to do it though since he's always taking about broadening his work. But he would do good I think! :)

Posted by grecia_guerra Aug 18th 2009

THANK GODNESS!! lol hope he doesnt.. i hate the hobbit.. the book is SO BORING! ugh..

Posted by jkwellum Aug 18th 2009

that SUCKS he could be really good in it :(

Posted by fanatic Aug 18th 2009

I am really happy about this. I don't like the Hobbit and I don't want any of the HP actors anywhere near that movie. My personal opinion is that the cast, the main cast in particular, should not do anything in the fantasy/supernatural genre for a while (or at least not for the next few years).

Posted by hpintwense06 Aug 18th 2009

lol, that's good he won't play that role. I mean I know he said before in an interview that he's done with the wizard-type role, but it's nice to see that re-affirmed.

Posted by XLynn_McTavels Aug 18th 2009

I really have no clue which role they would want him for if they were to ask him to join the cast. I love that book, I admit I haven't read it in about a year becuase my copies have both fallen apart. I really do not see him playing Bilbo at all and he's way too young for any of the roles; even with the way elves and hobbits age.

Posted by Padfoot777 Aug 18th 2009

Hahahahaha, who could he be anyway? The elven king? ;D

Posted by trueligth Aug 18th 2009

I hope to see Daniel soon in a movie or in the theater, any way actors in general need to expand their career and make more that one charater. I think fans of HP we like to see what it is next.

Posted by iwantorlando05 Aug 18th 2009

@Padfoot777: People are talking about Dan possibly playing the lead role aka Bilbo Baggins. James McAvoy would be awesome in that role. But then again so would Dan, but I can definitely see where he's coming from. Despite his uncanny resemblance to Elijah Wood (Frodo)...Dan's probably ready to do something new. And the Hobbit will be filming for a long time since they're splitting it into two movies.

Posted by Tarhisie Aug 18th 2009

Ew, thank God. I like Dan and all, but he would be an awful Bilbo (I assume they were referring to that role). And it would just be weird with him in it. Other than any of the LOTR actors (I know Ian McKellen said he'll come back, not sure about Ian Holm or anyone else), they should only cast no-names for it.

Posted by XLynn_McTavels Aug 19th 2009

No names would be great! What a movie to start in, if it turns out great (which I hope it does) that would really make a name for the actors. I think Dan's acting ability is up to par for the role but as I said, WAY too young for it. Bilbo is 50 when this adventure took place.

Posted by shielded117 Aug 19th 2009

Well, I'm sure that if the director wanted, they would change that. I mean Frodo was supposed to be 50 when he set out on his journey... I hope they don't though. I really can't Dan in this role anyway.

Posted by kalb Aug 19th 2009

Dan does not seem the part to me, and like others have pointed out, Frodo was 50 when he started his adventure as thief searching for gold. I can't wait for this film - the book was terrific.

Posted by hathan Aug 19th 2009

Thank God! I love The Hobbit and I just can't see him as Bilbo, or any other character for that matter, he just doesn't fit into those stories.

Posted by tipsyhermione Aug 19th 2009

Hello hello i am tipsy hermione and frankly i disagree with all of you. 1. Dan is not 'too young' ~ about the same age elijah was when he was cast as frodo baggins 2. Dan would make a great Bilbo Baggins, he does resemble a younger sexier version of ian holmes 3. Bilbo and Harry are completely different characters 4. To Dan: You are being slightly arrogant. Harry Potter put you on the map, you should not be too hasty to put it behind you. You have a lifetime ahead of you to make a [[BIGGER]] name for yourself in this industry. 5. Anyone would kill to be cast as bilbo in The Hobbit just as they would have killed to be cast as Harry 6. The Hobbit is going to be a great film no doubt, Peter Jackson is amazing 7. Dan should feel honored if peter approached him with the role. 8. Peter: please dont, Dan is not worthy ~ every actor cast in the lotr was extremely modest (watch the 72 hours of behind the scenes.) The exception being orlando but who doesnt

love leggie? They were all blessed to be part of the LOTR. 9. I love LOTR just as much as I love Harry Potter, but i am tipsy hermione and not tipsy eowyn. Daniel Radcliffe, you have irritated Tipsy Hermione. Rupert's hotter anyways, he would make a cuter hobbit.

Lmao. I don't think Dan's saying it wouldn't be an honor to play that role. He's saying he wouldn't be interested because he's already done the big budget, fantasy film that's based on a famous book thing. He's been doing that since he was 11 years old. And it's not like they've asked him and he turned it down. I can definitely understand Dan not wanting to do it and isn't he too young for that role anyways. I thought Bilbo was like 30.

Posted by tipsyhermione Aug 19th 2009

Rupert should play bilbo not dan.

Posted by iwantorlando05 Aug 19th 2009

Rupert? I guess he's quirky enough and he's a great actor. But I'm liking the McAvoy suggestion. But then again...I've only read like 2/3 of the Hobbit.

Posted by riddleisourking Aug 19th 2009

Is this even news? He wasn't offered the role, he said as much so why is it news just because some reporter asked would he take on another role. I guess it's been so dead around here lately that anything is good enough to be news though. lol

Posted by Padfoot777 Aug 19th 2009

iwantorlando05, thanks for filling me in. I do not see him playing Bilbo! I mean, Bilbo is suppose to look the same as he did in the Fellowship, the Rings makes him look the same, Dan does not look like a hobbit! ;D

Posted by Kamion Aug 19th 2009

Radcliffe in the Hobbit would be a firstclass career killer for him. look at the success Eliyah Woods has had since LOTR; a role in a force-up movie about English hooligans and that was it. At least for the big screen. Daniel has a 200% change to be HarryPotter-esk for ever and he knows it. He must show those one-minded casting directors he can do far more then that or he will be the richest junkie his ages in 5 years.

Posted by iwantorlando05 Aug 19th 2009

@Kamion: He already has shown the casting directors that he can do more. Have you seen him in December Boys, EQUUS, and My Boy Jack?? Dan is very talented. Plus he's supposed to star in The Journey is the Destination when Deathly Hallows wraps and I can't wait to see him in that. I think all the HP actors specifically the trio have done a great job of branching out while filming the HP movies so that people know they can do other things.

Posted by iwantorlando05 Aug 19th 2009

@ riddleisourking: I'm assuming it's news because it's about the main actor in the movies.

Posted by bermionie77 Aug 20th 2009

Thank gosh! The hobbit is the best book J.R.R. Tolkien ever wrote and harry potter is not cut out for one of his most famous charaters.....so excited about the hobbit movie I can hardly contain myself!!!!!!!!!! Yahoooooooo

Posted by evilsnape Aug 21st 2009

Radcliffe will always be remembered as Harry Potter. It is, as he says, far too close a role to even consider. I think he should try something comletely different when he finishes DH. Besides, I think some Potter fans might consider it base treachery if Radcliffe starred in the hobbit!

Posted by colorfulcrocs Aug 22nd 2009

What is it with all these "Hobbit" rumors? First David Tennant, now Dan...

Posted by Kamion Aug 24th 2009

@ iwantorlando05 I know he did SeptemberBoys, My Boy Jack and EQUUS. But I fear that kind of productions will vaporise in the minds of casting directors against the flood of HP products, the repeats and rereleases of DVD's. the actors seem to work very hard to branch out, but as charming as their work is, those other movies would never have been known to the public if it wasn't for the fact a HP actor is playing in it. I do hope they will become succesful in the profession of their choosing, but hard times are to be expected.
