Evanna Lynch recently spoke with EvannaLynchFans.com about what she's been up to lately. The Luna Lovegood actress also offered some encouragement to people reaching for their goals:
I'm sure many of you have or have had the same dream and have encountered all the apparent obstacles. People like to hype it up and make is sound impossible, unattainable, too good for you... Just the other day I was trying to clean out my desk (anything other than study exactly!) and I came across the letter that I received from the HP casting dept. It was a reply to a tape I sent long before the open audition, long before the release of Goblet of Fire even, on my own initiative. They did reply and kindly told me that there were no openings on the film at the minute and that also nationality played a big role in casting. Plainly put, it looked like the cards were against me and I'm sure I felt that way at the time.
I'm not saying this to big myself up ('cause I know they use this on press releases etc. etc.), I mean to remind you how fine the line is between reaching a goal and not. I wasn't an actress with connections or anything particularly distinguishing. This is why I hate the probability chapter in my maths book. Manifestation doesn't take into account how many chances you have. If it happens it happens and it didn't matter what anyone else told you. Sorry to annoy any mathematicians out there but I don't believe in probability! So strip away all the hype, because anything anyone tells you is just...chat, and it's really up to you and you'll get nowhere if you don't at least believe you deserve everything you dream about.

Im a 32 year old man. Im a teacher and a promising writer. Ive spent the last few years trying to sell my book to publishers.
This has been a long week with a lot of negatives. Evannas little recitation was just right in my wheel house of what I needed to read today. Great advice from a young person. Just because someone is older doesnt make them wiser.

Shes lovely!!! I love her voice, she should make a relaxation tape. Her voive is so soothing that it wouldnt even matter what she talked about.

Thats funny. But what does "not believe in probability" really mean? It seems a little like "I dont believe that 1 + 1 = 2". Probability of course shouldnt control your life, but Im afraid to tell you Evanna, but there is little dispute over the fact that probability is very real. :-P

This proves just one thing : that wisdom has nothing to do with age nor experience. And another: Evanna was just the one and only true Luna. I love Luna in the books, I love her even more with what Evanna says. This is just absolutely a wonderful thought and in such a dark world we need to listen to people like that. Thank you Evanna.

I dont think she means she does not believe in the mathematical concept of probability, but more like, even if the odds are 1 to one million, dont give up just because you have a low chance. Its about persistence, not that she actually disagrees with the discipline of mathematical probability, because that would be kind of weird :-)

i believe what Ms Lynch meant was either you go ahead with your plans, or you dont. Thats why its so important to perservere. like Harry. He kept going, even though he thought the odds were against him because he didnt know what the last horcruxes were or how to destroy them. I have wanted to be a Kindergarten teacher for a long time, I havent given up my dream. I keep going. One day, I will be a teacher. And think about JKR, she could have given up writing about the books, because she was turned down so many times by publishers. But she kept going, and look what happened. Probability-- fifty fifty. Either you do something or you dont.

Just remember how long it took JKR to get HP accepted by a publisher, and dont give up :)
And isnt Evanna just lovely? And suits her character too- if you added in the odd mention of Nargles and Crumple-Horned Snorkacks, I could imagine Luna saying something like that. And I mean that in a positive way!

Probability isnt a belief. Its a statistical and mathematical fact. While never giving up might seem like good advice, I dont think Evanna Lynch telling people not to believe in mathematics is good advice at all.

Mattrixed, I dont believe she was suggesting to anyone that they shouldnt believe in math. My own opinion is that she was speaking in the abstract rather than the concrete. It was a rather uplifting and positive message and Im glad she shared it.

If you for one second believe Miss Lynch was proposing mathmatical probablility does not exist you misinterpreted. If you believe that AND got offended, you take yourself WAAAAAY too seriously and missed the whole point. Relax, accept that she wasnt speaking in concrete terms about math but broad concrete strokes about self confidence. This is the difference between right brained and left brained people, dont get so offended when an artists interprets your ordered rules metaphorically and we wont laugh when you try to draw a kitty.
