This news initially broke a couple weeks ago but has recently been picked up in various major media outlets. According to a new book by Matt Latimer, who was US President Bush's speechwriter, Bush's administration had denied JK Rowling a Presidential Award because the Potter books promoted witchcraft.
From the BBC:
The claims appear in Latimer's new book called Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor.
He wrote that "narrow thinking" led White House officials to object to giving Rowling the civilian honour.
The award acknowledges contributions to US national interest, world peace or cultural endeavours.
Thanks to everyone who has e-mailed in with the tip.

This only goes to further prove the myopic idiocy that permeated the Bush administration ... lead valliantly by George W.

Oh my gosh, what is WRONG with "promoting sorcery"??? How is that bad? What hippogriff crap. @IrishCat, I had to look up "myopic" LOL. I couldnt figure out why you were saying they were idiots who needed glasses for seeing far away. :) But I get it now. Good word, and well said.

Are you seeeerious? Thats absolutely ridiculous.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 14:37:22
Yeah, she definitely doesnt deserve that award. Afterall, shes only inspired a whole generation of children to read. Thats not worthy of an award at all. *sarcasm* That is just ridiculous. Thank god the Bush administration is gone.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 14:45:03
Why, thats absuuuurd. Of course Bush would think that Harry Potter promotes witchcraft.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 15:04:30
One lying author invents a story to help sell books and you and other liberal outlets pick it up and post it as if it was a fact. Its a lie. Prove to me that the Bush administration didnt give her the award becuase they thought the books promote witchcraft. You should be ashamed for propagating that lie. If I tell you that the Obamas hate HP, are you going to post that? That also would be a lie. Check the facts or do facts not matter when you can bash somebody with whom you disgree with politically?
The Leaky Cauldron, a Harry Potter fan site, noted that during the Bush administration, the president and first lady Laura Bush were vocal about their love for the Potter books. Laura Bush called the books her favorite . "It was like finding a great mystery writer and having that whole body of work to read at once. I really loved them," she said during a 2003 interview.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 15:04:34
That is one of the most ridiculous things Ive ever heard. To think that our nations leader was on the same intellectual level as Laura Mallory.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 15:08:32
That is complete BS.
JK Rowling deserves every molecule of that award.

When I saw Bushs famous commencement speech given during the 1st year of his office, I knew then we are in for trouble. Brush is a vile, small-minded man, ignorant creature -- hardly a man. Please, someone do an unforgivable curse him already!! Bush, may your books bite you and your pots grow a leg to kick you, and may you be found to have a hairy heart!!!
Current Prez will fix this right quick to get her award soon, am sure. :-)

i ditto meitnik entirely. and anyone in their right mind would be disgraced to be honored by such a foul horror of a person anyway. JKR, if your reading this, I thank you for using your books to root out the Laura Mallorys of the world. Thank god we finally got a president who rad the books tom his effing kids like ervery other normal parent in the entire U.S.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 15:21:54
meitnik, you say things like that about somebody. What does that say about what kind of person you are? PLEASE let the facts get in the way of your hatred. The Bush family were and are HP fans. That author is a liar trying to sell books. Shame on Mugglenet for distributing this falsehood and shame on those of you who are so ready to believe it and bash somebody unjustly.

Thank you factchecker. Everybody bashes the Bush administration, but spreading hate about the man is uncool... As was stated before, Im pretty sure they said they liked the books...

factchecker, were gonna bash him till hes dead and gone. it was HIS speechwriter. bushs probably still got his number in his contacts, but nothings been done, no public apology made.

Honestly I wouldnt want her to accept an award from the Bush administration.

Factchecker, you rock! Andrew should be ashamed of himself for putting politics into a book series. You guys try to spread the messages you spread on "smart" mouths on this site as well, but mugglenet visitors shouldnt have to read this. Quit hating on Bush as if hes the worst president in history. He just served his two terms during a tough eight years. Both him and the first lady were supportive of the books, so quit acting as if he hated them.

Well...they do have the entire in god we trust logo on ever dime, nickel, quarter, and dollar bill.
Seriously though, saying that HP promotes witchcraft is like saying Aladdin promotes keeping wild animal as pets.
If this is the case, then hundreds of thousands of books should be banned b/c they are about witches and wizards.
I want to take a survey asking 1. how many people have had the desire to brew potions and cast spells after reading hp. 2. how many parents have found their children secretly indulging in dark magic books and trying to cast spells on their annoying little brother. and 3. How many people actually believe this crap about magic exists.

Even if the Bushes did enjoy the HP books, it proves that they are even more hypocritical because they would refuse to admit it as their official position by doing such a thing as giving an author an award! They would have gotten so much crap from conservatives and lose support of those people that would ban books such as HP...the horror! Personally they might have had one opinion that they could never have gone public about because it would have been going against their "party lines."
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 16:08:42
Thank you Polaris04 30 and gregoire !!
callmebella, it was NOT their offiicial position. Publishers and authors often make outlandish claims to sell books. You may also encounter liars who say the Pope hates HP. That is also false. In fact, the Vatican newspaper gave the new Harry Potter movie four stars for promoting "friendship, altruism, loyalty and self-giving." It is a shame that just one person says this and then those who enjoy hating Bush, Republicans, or the Pope, use it to foster their own agenda. The least Andrew could have done is said that there is doubt regarding the voracity of the author and that in the past the Bush famly has always espoused their love of HP. By the way, the Obamas like HP too.

This really PISSES me off!! A lot of things the Bush Administration upset me and still does! But seriously...denying a woman who pretty much CHANGED the face of literature and made it cool to so many young people and adults around the world is complete idocracy! Because of JK Rowling millions of teenagers and college students were lining up at midnight to purchase a 800 page BOOK instead of the latest video game or iphone application. I just dont understand how someone so DUMB couldve been put in charge of running this country not once...but TWICE!! *end rant*

This story about President George W. Bush is an absolute lie. I would like to thank factchecker (posted above) for calling attention to this gross liberal propaganda.
As noted above, the Harry Potter series was widely praised by both President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. This was obviously something invented by Obama and his other liberal cronies and Im sure Obama must have had a word with this author to try to smear the Bush administration.
Shame on MuggleNet for posting this clear liberal garbage.

to hpfanficfan: I believed that magic exists when I first read the books. Call me childish, but I used to run around with a cloak and broken twig in hand shouting spells... I was 8. LOL, best times ever! But, my parents havent found me in my room practicing dark magic... yet! ;)

Did everyone fail to notice it said the Bush ADMINISTRATION?! Oh, and I love how the guy doesnt say what specific year, or who it was awarded to during that administration.
For the record, its called the Presidential Medal of Freedom. While the Harry Potter books are by far my favorite books to read, I wouldnt exactly put Rowling in the same category as Mother Teresa, Pope John Paul II, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, or Anthony Fauci. I might note that Anthony Fauci is an immunologist who has made huge strides in AIDS and other immune disorder research, searching for a cure. Fauci was given this award by President Bush. Now I wonder, if Bush was so "narrow-minded," and truly cared about what the Christian extremists thought, wouldnt he fear that giving the award to Fauci might make it look like Bush was gay himself?
Open your eyes, people. This is just some randon guy out looking to make some cash off liberals hungry for a conspiracy.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 17:53:16
Its so annoying when people just blindly believe everything the media says. Either way, George Bush is gone for better or for worse. Why dont we all...ahem...move on? Or grow up?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 17:54:28
Theres a lot of material from Order of The Phoenix and on that could be seen as an attack on the Bush Administration and Tony Blair (the bits concerning the Ministry of Magic and such). I wouldnt be surprised if thats the REAL reason they didnt give JK Rowling a medal, since there are thinly-veiled criticisms of their policies in the text.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 17:55:38
I also actually think this is dumb. First of all, "White House Officials" dpesnt automatically equal Bush. Also, there is NO evidence that this happened except for like a sentence in a book. It pisses me off that all these people who worked in the Bush administration are JUST NOW coming out these books about all the things their co-worker (notice its never actually the author) did and how bad they were, its like, well, if you think this is so wrong, why didnt you come out and say it earlier? Seriously, I really disliked Bush but I think this is just silly.

Bush administration, didnt say Bush. It was his people who did it, if they did. Im not a fan of Bush at all. But I always be sure to read carfully before i attack. Often times Presidents are puppets to their own team, perhaps this is one of those cases

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 19:04:45
AndrewW, you THINK it could be true so it could be just as easily false. Did you also believe Republicans for Voldemort when this site (happily) posted that garbage merchandise? The Bush family have spoken about liking the HP series more than once. This is a cheap shot by some lowlife trying to sell more books. You are letting your personal feelings interfere with the truth. If I said the Obama administration hates HP because of witchcraft, would that also make that true in your eyes? Wishing something to be true doesnt make it true if it isnt true, even when you wish upon a star. Mudslinging and liberalism go hand in hand it would seem.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 19:25:19
I suppose it was the Bush Administration who did this, so not Bush directly, however I am positive that something as big as denying the most famous author of the 21st century an award wouldnt have gone unnoticed by his eyes. But of course Bush would do this. Hes always been a complete imbecile. Moreover, during his time as president he had to live up to the expectations of those select deluded Christians.

If anyone goes on Yahoo Answers, you should see this question entitled Phillip Pullman is second on US banned booklist, and JK Rowling lost US medal over Harry Potter witchcraft? It is located at this link: http://answers.yahoo.com/ question/index?qid=200909 30190358AAr5zQr&r=w
---- ------------------------- ------------------------- -------- Phillip Pullman, author of Northern Lights and other cherished childrens books is ranked second in the top 10 books that people have tried to ban across America. The Bush administration officials objected to giving JK Rowling a presidential medal of freedom on the grounds that her Harry Potter books encouraged witchcraft. So honestly, what do you expect? Its always America. Always. I mean, you get the occasional yuppy in some other random country who wont let their kids read or watch Harry Potter because of the evil it promotes, however the only people you see taking a step forwards in the matter come from America.

HPFANTimothy, the same lies being spread from the same story, through another source, doesnt make it true. George W. Bush is not an imbecile as you claim. He matriculated at and graduated from Yale University. What Ivy League school did you graduate from?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 19:48:01
Oh yeah, "Republicans for Voldemort," I forgot about that! That always makes me smile. I wonder who thought that up. Geniuses! Okay...kidding, kind of. Im not THAT prejudiced against Republicans, but you have to admit, it makes a good point! Okay, I have a lot to say here. Weasleytwin: good point, I really wouldnt want her to accept an award from the Bush administration! hpfanficfan: where is your sense of fantasy and adventure? Sheesh, you should have some conversations with Luna Lovegood ;). Nonnenmann, I would DEFINITELY put JKR in the same category as all those people you mentioned! Shes changed SO many lives for the better, including mine! And factchecker: even if this stuff is absolute rubbish (though I wouldnt be surprised if it were completely true!) I would still hate Bush and I would still have a very liberal point of view, thats just the way I am, and many others are as well. Plus, I just could never respect someone who was responsible for an entire country and still used the word "misunderestimate."

Gryffindor_Seeker_7, I suppose you like somebody better who promised transparency, no lobbyists, closing Gitmo, out of Iraq, and no tax increases, but kept none of his promises. They even want to tax colas. If you believe in those who spend all your tax dollars wastefully, take away your freedoms, lie for political gain, and sling mud, then being a liberal is the correct choice for you. Independent thinking seems to be a thing of the past. Those who want respect have none for the former President or the office so they deserve none in return. This story is just another case of cheap tricks and smears. Its a liberal epidemic. I was a Democrat (now Independent). I didnt want to be represented by Al Franken, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi but I wont stoop to childish insults like I have read in many comments.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 20:12:09
nonnenmann, thank you very much. I think too many people have been trained to react like Pavlovs dogs when they read this trash. Instead of reacting emotionally, they should examine the facts, and consider the source of the information (and the motivation of same).

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 20:22:33
@iblameneville96: Yes, I dont see whats wrong with it either. HPFANTimothy: I was looking at that top 10 banned books list. Very puzzling. I absolutely LOVE the His Dark Materials series, but I can obviously see why some Christians hate it. However, I think they should be able to look past the religious/anti-religious parts and set aside their views to read a wonderful and fascinating story. Factchecker: didnt mean to offend. I guess when I said I have very liberal thinking I meant I have been told that by others and I do see their point. But my liberal beliefs are mostly the type about the environment/oil, gun/weapon control, religion, death penalty, education, and womens and gay rights. I dont necessarily share ALL liberal views, but many, for sure. I mean, who likes paying taxes? And I dont think they should tax sodas because its unfair to those who would recycle them anyway, and wouldnt bring them back to the store, even to get some money back. They get what they want (I am recycling) but they get my money, too.

Okay, I could sit here and rant about how obnoxious and stupid and long list of expletives I find this, but Ill keep it short. See, Im pretty sure that here in the U.S we have this lovely thing called the separation between Church and State. And last time I checked, there was nothing in the Constitution that forbids witchcraft, so, yeah. Something isnt right there...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-02 20:34:15
Oh yeah, malteselover! I forgot to say, I just LOVE the separation between Church and State! But I dont think they should have added "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and expect us to say that in public schools. I know we dont HAVE to, but the teachers do frown upon not saying it.

First off, Latimer was low on the totem pole speechwriter position for the Bush white house, so for him to be in-the-know is not very good and having the presidents ear is highly unlikely.
Second, he is writing this book for his 15 minutes of fame.
Third, his former colleagues are telling a different tune and no one is backing up his claims.
Fourth, his office wasnt even in the West Wing, but across the street.
Fifth, if Bush considered him a confidante, why didnt Bush give him a nickname?
Sixth, The way the story goes, it WASNT Bush that said it, but someone on his staff. Former first lady Laura Bush announced it to the whole world she was a Harry Potter fan. Im sure that if she knew her husband had a choice to give Ms. Rowling an award, shed have a really good chance.
Seventh - I highly doubt that any of Mr. Latimers book has any credibility. Former President Bush was an avid reader as he was known to have read over 100 books a year and I hazard to guess that he was a HP fan too.
As Hermione would say, "PURE RUBBISH".

Id hate to live in a country where religion wins over expressing yourself. Australia may not have any rules about free speech, but we sure as hell dont press any sort of religious values onto the country. Sometimes the USA makes me a bit sad, if this story is true anyway.

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 00:01:50
Really Andrew? You are going to go here? As a highly conservative individual, I know I am in the minority in this fandom. I have been able to ignore the side remarks and comments during Mugglecast throughout the years because they were personal commentary. However, posting this story makes it seem like fact. I cannot tell you whether or not this story is true (I doubt it, but I have no inside info, so I cannot say anything absolutely), and I rather doubt that anyone on Mugglenet staff can confirm or deny it either. Next time you want to make a political statement, dont submit it as fact in a news post. I lost a lot of respect for you and your site with this post.
And before people can jump all over me for this, claiming I am just a stupid Republican who knew nothing about how awful Bush was, I would like to state, for the record, that I am a libertarian who thought Bush was a mediocre president at best. I did not agree with many of his policies, but unlike many posters here, I will not demonize a man who led our country during a very difficult time. I respect the fact that he tried to do what he thought was best for the country he loves. He is out of office now. Cant we just let him be?
factchecker, thank you so much for providing intelligent criticism for this news post. I adore you for that :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 00:59:29
Guys. Guys! GUYS!!!! Even IF (and thats a big IF) what Matt Latimer says is true on this topic it was people OTHER THAN George W. Bush that prevented this award from being bestowed upon J.K. Rowling. Conservative and Liberal newspapers/blogs ALL across the internet are quoting correctly Latimer in this regard. He NEVER said ANYTHING WHATSOEVER about Bush specifically stopping this.
Even-so, the BURDEN OF PROOF is upon Latimer to prove that he is correct in what he is stating. As of now, there should be absolutely no reason to get in a hissy fit about this.
P.S. She totally deserves it. :)

Weaselette, I think you misunderstand religion does not "win" over expressing yourself take a much closer look at what actually happens in this country and you will see that is not the case. By the way I think Australia is a beautiful country.
Factchecker, Thank you for adding well informed input to this discussion keep up the good work.
Elderwand7, Thank you for adding some very interesting points to factcheckers comments.
nonnemann, Well said and thank you too.
Every country has extremists, radicals etc. not as many Christians as some would think even consider HP as "promoting" witchcraft that would be the majority of the extremists who feel that way. Some if not most of which have never cracked the cover of one of the books to see what it actually says. I for one think they are awesome.. I cant count how many times I have read them. There are many more people that I have talked to who feel the same way. JK has such an awesome perspective of life there is much we all could learn from reading her work.

HDMSTRSNAPE, deliberate misquote??? I said, "Mudslinging and liberalism go hand in hand it would seem." You left out the it would seem. If all you got from those comments was that line, you have missed the boat. I would expect more from somebody using a Severus monicker. I would venture that only Jo Rowling has more extensive knowledge or appreciation of HP than I do. That being said, even I would not have given her the Medal of Freedom. Perhaps you should read the excellent and on point comment above by elderwand7, instead of taking a petty cheap shot across the bow of my swift boat. One hundred points from Slytherin and wash your hair. To Melissas credit, I have not seen this ridiculous story posted on Leaky yet. I know Emerson and pals may be liberals but this misleading and incorrect story should have never been posted on Mugglenet.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 01:13:13
factchecker, this story was posted on Leaky, but it was very clearly labeled as a rumor and mentioned President and Laura Bushs previous compliments of the books. It was much more well-rounded and provided a more complete picture. I can respect posting this info in that manner.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 01:26:28
factchecker: its SAD that you think someone is not an imbecile just because they went to Yale. For your information, Im 15 years old and very intelligent for my age. I go to one of the best schools in Melbourne (I doubt you know where that is). George Bush was and is an imbecile. He started a war, and he didnt know how to end it. If youd have been following his progress with a clear mind, youd agree. Unfortunately, you seem to be a little deluded.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 01:32:26
Weaselette: I disagree with you. I, too, live in Australia and I am not happy with the way this country looks at religion. For instance, the refusal of building a Muslim school in a country community. I am referring to Camden Council of course, who continue to debate that they are not allowing the project to go forth because the planned school will ruin the country landscape. The truth is though that they are a bunch of biased, racist idiots. -----------P.S. I am a Catholic.

argylealli, thank you for that information. I have always thought of Melissa as being a fair and reasonable person and fine webmaster. Thank you for your kind words earlier as well. I posted my previous comment before reading it or I would have said thank you in that comment. Thank you for your comment ladyshadow_8. ickle_diddykins, it doesnt matter how many newspapers and blogs run with this false accusation if they all use the same source. There is nothing that leads to it being true except one self serving author. In fact, there is much evidence to the contrary. I am amazed I didnt draw personal attacks for my comments so thank you all for that. It is troublesome to see all the Bush bashing still. I disagree with nearly every policy of President Obama but I would never say the things about our President that were said about GW every day of his presidency. It seemed as if people thought the popular thing to do was bash Bush. They see it in the media and in entertainment. They hear personal agendas from kinder to college from people who should be teaching not preaching. I suppose I shouldnt be amazed to see a few come in with nothing to offer to civil discourse other than to call GW stupid or use foul language. Those who dont have anything constructive to offer often add their vitriol and run off. During the election, I would ask associates who they were voting for and why. Often GW got bashed and he wasnt running. I asked them what he did they hated so much and all they could ever say was that he had us in Iraq. Now they have no problem with us being there. If I asked why they like Obama, they couldnt name one policy they liked. Usually they just said they liked him. No more complaints. No complaints about the Speechmaker-in-Chief. No complaints about the loss of freedoms. No complaints about all the spending and debt or hundreds of millions being spent flying around making speeches. But I digress. The point is that the story is false yet gets propagated.

HPFANTimothy, I dont want to deter you from taking an interest in world events but, name calling and comments like "I doubt you know where that is" are not polite or helpful. I, in fact, like Australia and have been there.
As far as thinking someone is not an imbecile just because they went to Yale. I not only think it, I know it. Do you know what IQs were once considered to be for the moronic, imbecilic, and idiotic? If you dont mean it literally, then it is merely impolite to say. You said you are 15 years old and very intelligent for your age. They use mental age and chronological age to measure intelligence but manners and common sense are immeasurable. I am very intelligent, thank you, but my grammatical errors may belie it. You said George Bush started a war, and he didnt know how to end it and use that as reasoning for him being an imbecile. We are still in Iraq and our current leader doesnt know how to end it in Afghanistan. Does that make him an imbecile? Without meaning this as an affront to you, I really dont think I should be debating American politics with a 15 year old Aussie but thank you for the discussion mate.

I remember First Lady Bush proudly showing off the Harry Potter themed Christmas decorations at the White House in 2003. The video was available online including on the White House website.
MRS. BUSH: "The theme this year is a Season of Stories. Of course, as an old librarian and a lifelong reader, it was really fun to choose my favorite books. On the mantels we have Harry Potter. On the dining room table, we have Alice in Wonderland."

Okay, I only read a first few of the comments, but just an FYI to those who believe its liberal propaganda, John McCains running mate, SARAH PALIN, tried to ban any book that would promote "witchcraft" and Harry Potter was number 1 on that list. And McCain was extremely close with the Bushs, so I wouldnt put it passed them that they werent fans either. I would surprised if Bush would even understand the books. If he ever said he read them, I wouldnt believe it at all. Bush was a disgrace to America, and I am extremely happy he is gone. Now he just needs to be charged with War Crimes, and Ill be even more happy... I wouldnt believe that a person who read a Harry Potter book, the book that praises love, and compassion for all people, would be able to infiltrate and destroy a country with no reason what-so-ever.
And the Obamas have been flat out HP fans from the beginning, and didnt use it as a tool to get people to like them. And he mentioned JK Rowlings tribulations during her publication process for her first book in his Education Speech. Gotta love me some Obama!
JKR ROCKS! And she doesnt need the stupid Bush Administration to tell her so!

@ factchecker: I know, I was agreeing with you. I said that it was a big IF for what he said that it still would have been others unlike what some people on here are thinking. I also said that the burden of proof was upon Latimer to prove that he was truthful with what he said. I too believe he is just saying this to make a quick buck and gain his 15 minutes of fame. Pity.

ladyshadow_8 and HPFANTimothy : I was seriously unbelievably tired when I wrote that comment, I cant even remember what it said. Maybe living in such a religion-free household/local community has blurred my judgment too...

As if anyone needed more reasons to hate him LOL jump on the " Bush is a moron" train ... mean to deny her that award when she inspired so many kids in America to start reading because theres witchcraft in the books ?if thats seriously true than I have one word for him: delusional XD

honestly, i suppose the theory of actually READING the books is still out of the question *rolls eyes*
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 07:08:13
I guess Bushs people were alot like Fudges people (well, mainly like Umbridge) in the Harry Potter books, its so horrible to deny her the award because her books have magic in them, I think its quite unfair. Its just like how Umbridge said that Lupin was a bad DADA teacher just because hes a werewolf? SO WHAT if the books have magic and sorcerery in them? Theyve inspired people young and old around the whole GLOBE to start reading again!

@Factchecker: Just because he graduated from an Ivy League doesnt make him smart. His father had been president of the US...so Im sure strings couldve easily been pulled. Its a well known FACT that Bush was drunk and high through much of his college career. I know plenty of fraternity guys who come to class hungover or dont even bother going at all and they still SOMEHOW end up graduating because their rich mommies and daddies pay their way through school. And everyone knows the Greek system is completely corrupt!

This forum proves 2 things: One, politics needs to be left out of Potter discussions. Two, that right-wing people are the BIGGEST bunch of hypocritical whiny crybaby deniers. Regardless, the Potter books were written from a liberalesque point of view, and right-wing whiners will do and say anything to justify their asinine failed belief system. The truth....you cant handle the truth, as it is apparent from your idiotic posts.

Ill agree that this was a very poorly researched story, and Im disappointed Mugglenet has posted as fact.
And, I have to point out, Veggie_Potter... your own post shows your ignorance when it comes to Bush/McCain. You said, "And McCain was extremely close with the Bushs, so I wouldnt put it passed them that they werent fans either."
Are you kidding me?? You think McCain and Bush were "close"? They are anything but! Bush wanted Mitt Romney as the Republican candidate, not McCain. Disregarding that many conservatives feel that McCain is a Democrat in a Republican suit, the two have had very public problems with each other since the 2000 primaries. Bush has openly said that he felt uncomfortable with McCain as the Republican nominee last year, and McCain has been openly critical of Bush. You think Bush should be charged with war crimes, but you dont even know this little fact about him and McCain? It leads me to wonder what you might not know about the war, if you managed to miss the animosity between Bush/McCain.
People really should do their research and KNOW THE FACTS before posting such bold claims. Please, people, think for YOURSELVES... get your news from more than one source and dont just buy into what CNN or MTV tell you is the way to think. They have their own agenda just like anyone else. Actually learn the FACTS if you want to understand what is happening in American politics.
How ironic that txRABbit says, "The truth... you cant handle the truth" to those who are pointing out that this ARTICLE isnt based in truth or fact. Thank you to factchecker and others for your comments, they saved me from tearing out my hair in frustration!

Severus__Snape: factchecker did not shut me up. Instead, he decided to prove someone wasnt an idiot by stating that they went to an Ivy League school. WELL, OF COURSE HE DID. His father was PRESIDENT. It wouldnt have exactly been hard to enroll him. And whats more, the majority of people on this earth hate Bush. And... I wonder why. And dont tell me to learn my facts.

Hey factchecker, before you start bashing this book, how about you get the facts straight yourself? It clearly says Bushs Administration, not bush himself. It doesnt say ONCE in this post that Bush himself denied JKR of the medal. It even mentions narrow mindedness" to be the reason the WHITE HOUSE OFFICIALS didnt give JKR the award. This book is obviously not straight up bashing bush. Youre entitled to your opinions about the government but to call this author a liar is unjust.
and Yankeemon, you said and i quote "This was obviously something invented by Obama and his other liberal cronies" What kind of hypocrite are you? You just thanked factchecker for calling out the gross liberal propaganda and then turned around and spread a gross conservative lie yourself? Where in the hell do you get off saying that this book was approved and supported of by obama?

factchecker : Well said in youre last three posts .. :)
weaselette : Blurred judgment happens to everyone even under the best of times no problems here. I believe you have the right to your opinion and the right to express it as does everyone else. I thank you for the respect you have given me in turn :) I think that is one and I say one of because there was so much to learn in JKs books.... we should all make a great effort to understand everyone has different beliefs and ways of life that should be respected and we should not be bashing each other for our differences. We should not try and force our beliefs on each other we should do the best we can to learn about each other and respect each other.
veggie_potter : Did you not read any of factcheckers last three posts? As I said earlier I do respect your opinion and I mean no disrespect with mine. We have separate governing states, Sarah Palin was the governor of Alaska there are forty eight other states who I do not think the governors of those states jumped on her band wagon for that one. Many people in the states have said that it was a crazy notion for that too happen. Personally I think they should invent a new award called the JK Rowling award to maybe inspire more writers to do what she has done and bring a world of children (adults also) up reading life inspiring books with as much hunger and desire as hers have done.
LoonyLovegood77 : Unfortunately Bushs admin. is not the only place that " Fudges people exist" Umbridge also accused Harry of being a liar and with no other proof other than her word many witches and wizards jumped on the band wagon. Just as in the world of Harry Potter so it is in our world. The same can be said for Voldemort and his followers (extermists, radicals) then there are those in the Order of the Phoenix
and its followers and last but not least those who just wait and watch and never take a stand for either side.

OooooO HPFANTimothy ... you are SO TRUE My Aussie from Down Under! lol, WE Americans DO BLOW things outta proportion... because of our STUPID sensationalism. When Dumbledore was declared GAY by JK Rowling, which country made the MOST big deal about it? With conservatives like Bill O Reilly bashing Rowling calling her a "PROVACATEUR" and homophobics saying that they hate her now, or that DUmbledore is a pedophile and shouldve been straight??? AMERICANS did all that more than Any other country on the face of this planet. Even JK Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe said that they didnt think the Americans of all people would take it soo personally and offensively. Basically we have a problem with things like that. But moving on to Witchcraft, Americans are even CRAZIER about that topic too. Harry Potter has made more banned lists and condemnation from American conservatives more than any other country, even Great Britain, where HP came from. I mean look at Bush, Sarah Palin, stupid Laura Mallory and MANY other Americans.. what do they have in common? Ill let you be the judge of that. Just thank God for Obama, that he actually LOVES Harry Potter and in person is a better man than Bush! and "Factchecker": Its true that Bush graduated from Yale, but just because you graduated from a school DOESNT MAKE YOU SMART... as someone once told me: "SOME PEOPLE GRADUATE, BUT THEYRE STILL STUPID." Thats BUSH.. he had a lot of help and family influence in the school to get him by too. Have you watched the movie "W"? It explains everything about how George was NEVER as good as his brother Jebb, he was an alcoholic, partying alot in fraternities, and his OWN PARENTS didnt even think he would be smart enough to be something important in life like the PResident.. well in the end he got by, cheated and became one, but in the end, his stupidity followed him.

..... factchecker, honestly. Get your head out of George Bushs arse. Though you might have been around blowing him while he was president, in case you havent noticed, hes gone now. He doesnt know you or care about you, so stop treating him like a god when you KNOW hes intensified problems, even if he didnt create all of them. Please, take your political concerns elsewhere and stay off of here if you hate Jo Rowling so much. Its not like many people on here are interested in politics. In case you havent noticed, most people on here arent the big adults like you.

It never ends. People who have no fair criticism always stoop to insulting others. Is all that wise guys can say about George Bush is that he is an idiot? What purpose does that serve? Does it make you feel better about yourselves? A few of you praise the Obamas for liking HP but ignore the truth that the Bush family loves HP. Your personal beliefs and biases are affecting your judgement. The story is false. The Bush administration did not turn her down and claim she promoted witchcraft. Some of you gleefully jump on the bandwagon and start bashing. HPFANTimothy, I will not respond harshly to your rude and naive comments. I know, that at fifteen, you probably think you know everything. You dont. Its a shane how young people are brainwashed/indoctrinated in this era. Jman61568,
you said, "before you start bashing this book...". Where in any of my comments did I bash the book? I am pointing out that it is something that is typical to sell books. The fact that one person said something like that doesnt and it should be widely accepted. Why are you so willing to believe it when most of the evidence is contrary? phoenixknighter, Im sorry but your comment is inane. If you follow your standard, everyone that went to college is an idiot. You have no evidence of the mans ignorance. All you have is your own emotional opinion. Too many people go through life following the leader. We have enough sheep. Childish insults are the ammunition of the witless. Take off the blinders. Thank you to those of you who seek truth and believe facts. I wish better days to you.

Hmmmm,... this isnt surprising, George W is a conservative douche, his supporters were mostly a bunch of "god fearing" idiots so naturally hes going to stay away from anything to do with an author whos written a book that one of the the major underlying themes is fight the corrupt (and bigoted) powers that be...
And for all those kids and old cranks that are brainwashed by fox news (aka the daily prophet), George W was one of the WORST presidents in recent history, he practically bankrupted the country with huge tax cuts for the wealthy and one of the longest and most expensive and pointless wars ever fought (oh yea, you younger folks will be paying for that for the rest of your lives) so anyone that would defend him on any level is pretty dull or easily fooled.
As far as the author goes,..I think that anyone whod work in any way for such a corrupt and despicable administration shouldnt be taken all that seriously or trusted for that matter. So i cant say i have much respect for the guy writing the book and trying to profit off of the despicable things he did for a paycheck..
And please STOP name calling the people who dont like George W "Liberals" just because someone doesnt agree with your narrow point of view it doesnt automatically make them into something you can slap a preconceived label onto, calling someone a liberal for hating G.W. is like calling someone who doesnt go to church a witch.
(not that theres anything wrong with witches or liberals) ;-)
Do a little research ( REAL INDEPENDENT RESEARCH ) and youll quickly learn what kind of man old G.W. really was..

Phoenixknighter, I find it disturbing that you give an Oliver Stone movie as a source of information, as if it were fact. Though I shouldnt be surprised, seeing how quickly many here are willing to believe this article. I guess you all would have believed Rita Skeeter since her rumors were published?
Also, Phoenixknighter, you say President Obama is a better man "in person" than Bush? You know both of them on a personal level to be able to say that? How is Obama a better person specifically? How is he a better president so far? What has he done to convince you he is "better"? His health reform has yet to pass, were still in Iraq, he has yet to make a decision on Afghanistan, Gitmo isnt closed, unemployment is still rising, and he just spent a million taxpayer dollars flying to Denmark to pitch for Chicago and didnt get it. And before you use the tired excuse that hes only been in office for nine months (almost 1/4 of his term, btw), Id like to remind you that at this point in Bushs presidency, 9/11 had happened and he was dealing with the unthinkable of a massive terrorist attack on our own soil.

My apologies for a few errors in my previous comment. doesnt and it should was meant to be doesnt MEAN it would and I made a typo with
shane that should have been shame. Bow_to_death, you dont let the facts get in the way of your anger. If you cant win he debate, you make a personal attack. This post by Andrew is entirely political so my comments are on topic. Where did I say I hate Jo Rowling? Once again you are inventing your own truth. I like Jo Rowlings work and I am VERY familiar with the books and movies. You added nothing worthy to this conversation so telling me to leave is silly (resisting using more insulting language).
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 13:44:02
SPEW, you complain about people saying those who dont like Bush are "liberal" but then you call his supporters mostly "God fearing idiots". Pot. Kettle. Black. Id also like to remind you that Bush CANT be solely responsible for the economys failure. Did you forget that there was a Democratic majority in Congress? I assume you know what "checks and balances" is. Not to mention that Clinton was the one who signed the paper that lead to the banks making high risk mortgage loans, one of the MAJOR causes of the recession.

Well, I just have some things to say... PRESIDENT BUSH AND HIS ADMINISTRATION CAN KISS MY ASS! If it was up to Obama and his administration, she would be holdin that award in her hands.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 13:55:04
factchecker, I didnt say I agreed this post should be up here. Just that just because it is, you dont need to go all crazy over it. And youre sure doing a funny job of showing you like her, what with calling her a liar and all. Oh well. By the way, I was not debating, so your statement is a false one. I only responded to you once at all. And I am not "angry". I am actually amused at your stability in your defense. You go that way, youll go far in life.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 14:00:31
goldfish, brilliant. I heard Barney Frank and the entire black caucus (Obama was sworn into the Senate at one of their meetings) saying that Fannie and Freddie needed no regulation (check a vid called burning down the house on youtube). They along with Acorn wanted to help low income minorities get homes more easily. Then they couldnt afford the homes and the whole scheme fell apart. As it turned out, they hurt heir own communities and it began the mortgage meltdown. SPEWforever, is that NBC kool aid good? You dont like us saying liberal and think its insulting? Look at your first sentence. You can insult be we cant tell the truth? We are still in Iraq, still in Afghanistan, the President spends millions every day flying around making speeches as if the election is unending. President Obama hasnt kept any promises. He was the attorney for corrupt Acorn. He is quadrupling the debt on our children and wastefully spending our future. Why is your anger directed at GW and not at Obama? I wouldnt call either of them names. You want independent research but you are willing to believe this author flat out. What research have you done? I should give up on some of you who have insults but no facts. I give up on explaining my typos too. darklordangel, maturity, try it.
Bow_to_death, I didnt say Jo was a liar. I said the author of that Bush bashing book is a liar. FYI, I have gone far in life but that is a fact you cant check. I see a few who have commented have gone far too but I wish theyd come back to planet Earth.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 14:02:31
Bow_to_death, Im pretty certain factchecker was saying the author of this book is probably a liar, not JKR.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 14:33:09
I would honestly love to know what age group Factchecker is. It seems on this website, mudslinging involves both the liberals and conservatives; not just one affiliation.
Come on, this is a Harry Potter fansite. It posts anything to do with Harry Potter, the books, the movies, the actors, and J.K. Rowling that it finds. Cant we all just be mature and grow up. Bush is out of office and so is his administration, lets just move on.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 14:41:12
FriggGiovanni, I am 50. Does that matter to you? I havent slung any mud despite childish insults. The point is that there is no evidence that the author of that book is telling the truth. If you have read all of the posts, you have seen that it is unfair to post this without, at least, pointing out how much the Bush family and administration have always said they admire the Rowling books.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 14:49:41
HAHA, Some of you guys are sooo NARROW-MINDED you might as well bend down and Lick George Bushs Arse lol. goldfish tells me do i know Obama at as a person? Ok, do you know Brittney Spears as a person? Do you know Miley Cyrus?? How about Martin Luther King, Jr.? Or Gahndi? Or President Lincoln? Michael Jackson, or just about EVERY IMPORTANT FIGURE who ever walked this earth? How do you know JK ROwling is not a dumbass or a mean girl in REAL LIFE??? you tell me that. you know how we can know them? By their behaviors and actions. JK Rowling wrote the HP books and in it talks about noble and wise things about love, and she invented Quidditch...therefore shes a genuis. Gahndi and MLK both preached about equality and and human rights.. theyre both heroes. Miley Cyrus and Brittney Spears both are wild who are ALWAYS getting in to trouble on TV.. therefore theyre ATTENTION WHORES.. It doesnt really matter what kind of person you are in PRIVATE.. people will JUDGE you how you act in PUBLIC. Dumbledore said "Its not our abilities that show what we truly are, its our choices" and our actions are defined by our CHOICES. you get it now? So about Obama, whether or not you agree with his politics or beliefs or not, hes not a racist, a bad guy or a fool. He has noble intentions that all of us AMERICANS want... and he will be judged how he executes them which is another story. Its like I want to change the world and help people, but that doesnt mean i know how to do it right? So dont bash me about this, thinking Im saying it because i support Obama, whether you like him or not, it doesnt mean hes evil. Just like what one conservative told me: "I like him as a person, but I DONT like policies and administration." those two are DIFFERNET things.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 14:53:09
FriggGiovanni- I dont think anyone is bothered that MN posted about this- Leaky did as well. The problem is that it was presented in a very biased way, without all the facts. TLC, on the other hand, made sure to let readers know that this is only a rumor, and fairly mentioned that in the past Mr and Mrs Bush have both said they like HP. They even included a link to an article where Laura Bush mentions that HP is a favorite of hers. I wont say that Andrew was deliberately intending to mislead readers, but he should have gotten all the angles. Thats all.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 14:58:07
@phoenixknighter Classifying people as one thing like an "attention whore" is, yes actually, a BAD THING. Its called stereotyping. People are much more complex than that. And just because someone likes George Bush doesnt make them narrow minded. In fact that seems like open-mindedness to me by not judging them.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 15:02:45
Factchecker, I was just making sure that you were an adult, because it would be unfair and slightly pretentious if you were a thirteen year old arguing about this with a fifteen year old (the Australian teen, who I have nothing against). Trust me, I dont want to come off as rude. Yes, Andrew should have pointed out how much the Bush family and the lot admired Rowlings books but nevertheless he was just posting an article that sprung up. There probably is a lot of liberalism on this site and it may slightly be biased but why complain about. Get in touch with Andrew and ask him to take it down if it bothers you so much. Again, I apologize if I may come off as rude. I disliked Bush and I didnt like his choices when he was president but I did respect him. There may be liberal propaganda but there is also conservative propaganda. Please dont overlook that.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 15:05:57
Andrew should probably do what Leaky did and mention the fact that this is a rumor and then everyone will all be happy
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 15:07:24
It amazes me that people will judge perfect strangers based on what they read in the media... its especially sad when its HP fans. I guess the whole Rita Skeeter/Daily Prophet stuff didnt resonate. And how is it narrow minded to want all sides of a story represented? Also, for clarification, I never said President Obama is evil or anything personal about him. You may want to re-read what was actually written.

Goldfish: I have lived in AZ all of my life, so I think I understand McCain very well. He is absolutley NOT a democrat wearing a republican suit, and I dont know how you would EVER think that. As for the war crimes, I must understand much more about war than you do if you dont think Bush should be charged for war crimes. Many other men have been punished with that label for less than what Bush has done. As for them not being close, why is it the Bush celebrates McCains birthdays with him, and many other things.
Lady_shadow 84: I was just trying to point out was the fact that she was running to help lead the nation... It a very scary thought. Imagine if they would have won. Harry Potter would be banned before you could say "Quidditch". Voldemort, Umbridge 08 (McCain, Palin 08). Gross.

To whoever said that we potter fans need to keep politics out of the discussion was probably right. I cant help but feel as though this conversation has spiraled rapidly into BOTH SIDES shouting insults and synonyms for "idiot" at each other. What people need to understand is that in the end of the day a.) we are all Potter fans, b.) neither side of the argument disagrees with the ideals promoted in the Harry Potter books, c.) none of us can truly judge a presidents character, seeing as none of us are his close friends or family. If this piece of information is true, then remember fellow liberals that it does not reflect on the beliefs of any republican fans, for no two members of any party share every single belief. If it isnt true...well, then calm down people. False alarm...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 16:15:39
Factchecker clearly needs to check his/her facts. The same goes for Goldfish. Thats one thing I cant stand about SOME republicans. Theyre so delusional and base their support off of FALSE information and support it endlessly like they think the rest of us are too stupid to notice its not true. Its ridiculous and Im tired of it. But I think most...if not all of us agree that JK Rowling DESERVED that award and I hope she wins it in the future.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 16:22:27
Good call, iwantorlando05. Im trying not to look at it in a biased sense, since I am by no means a republican. But its true, Rowling deserved that award.

yeah lets just put this behind us guys.. and correction Polaris04 : Sterotyping is classifying a group of people into 1 set of thinking.. like all blondes are dumb, or All conservatives hate gays, or all liberals are baby killers. Theyre extremely narrow-minded, and while SOME of them are a lil bit true its still VERY generalizing. what i said i thought about Miley and Britney is what you may call PREJUDGING..Im NOT really classfying any other famous brunette or blonde out there. Just the two of them, but im not really the prejudging type. I PERSONALLY feel that if you cant STOP getting into trouble for so many times, then something is wrong with you in the head. I mean look at KAnye West.. I LOVE his music, like truly. hes one of my favorite hip-hop artists.. but his arrogance is DISGUSTING sometimes. What he did to Taylor Swift puts him in the Attention Whore category, you get my drift? Whether or not Kanye is a great guy in person, which I wouldnt be surprised, its just that in public he doesnt act like it, so people have the RIGHT to judge him. Its like what do you want people to remember you by? something noble or something just for the sake of being noticed?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 16:33:43
iwantorlando05, just what facts do you think goldfish and I need to check? Your statement that "Theyre so delusional and base their support off of FALSE information and support it endlessly like they think the rest of us are too stupid to notice its not true." is not factual. Somebody could easily say that about liberals as well. Do you have any doubt that what Matt Latimer said is true? Do you really think that GW sat around with his cabinet and they discussed and decided that Jo was promoting witchcraft? Who is being delusional and spreading false information now?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 17:19:50
Thanks phoenix. I thought you were making a broader statement about being able to tell who a person is by their outside appearance or who they are associated with , but I can see where youre coming from with the whole "being defined by your actions thing" Either way "prejudging" can sometimes be very unfair conclusions about a person...

oh yeah i agree with you too Polaris.. I mean if i really knew Miley in person, i bet shes cool and id be her friend too.. i cant believe im saying this but even people like Brittney Spears or Paris Hilton, id think slightly differently of them if i knew them in person *goes to barf in toilet*

@Factchecker: Im not denying that some of what you said is true, but for someone who lives in the DEEP south and has daily contact with Strong Right wingers...I know for a fact that a lot of republicans are delusional. I dont think its only Bushs fault. I never said that. I said his "administration." It takes a team to run a country. Everything that happened (war, economy, etc.) isnt ONLY Bushs fault and the same goes for something as seemingly small as not giving a well-earned award to a woman who definitely deserves it. And Theres no reason for Matt Latimer to lie about something like this so I definitely believe it.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 18:50:22
iwantorlando05, no reason? You choose to believe it and accept it as fact. This is common practice. Publishers want authors to insert things in books that are controversial to draw attention to the book and spur sales. Money is the reason. Anything anti Bush you would accept but I dont see any criticism of the current. What has changed for the better? Do you really think when Latimer says the administration that it is true that the entire administration believed that Jo was promoting witchcraft? You have the right to believe it but, I think you do because you want to believe, not because it is based on any facts.

Phoenixknighter- I can understand and agree with you that peoples actions can give us clues as to who they are as a person. The point that Im trying to stress, however, is that we shouldnt be so ready to believe what the media or any second-hand source tells us someones actions are. Does that make sense? Theyre in a business of selling stories, and theyll sell peoples reputations along with the stories if it means bigger sales. I think its important to check all sides of a story and verify whats being reported ourselves, instead of just assuming the media or, in this case, the author is being 100% honest about things. Since we have evidence that the Bush family has openly said they are fans of HP while we have nothing but this guys word to support this accusation, I think its unfair for people to use this as an excuse to further drag Bush through the mud.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 19:19:34
hmmm....
Now now, I know it is wrong that the bush administration did this action, but George Bush is not the only one in the Bush administration.lol.As the speech said the "speech writer" said this. Now lets not go discussing politics on a highly viewed harry potter sight.lol. :)
--Although,while discussing politics Mr.Obama is NOT the best person in the world either.lol. Just look up his goof ups.
(Now if you see my name it says *potterfan4evr* so dont say im not a HP fan! I luv the HP series soo dont critisize me!!!!)

My goodness, Bush was such an idiot.

Veggie_Potter : I understand your point and I understand your concerns. I have to say though that Sarah Palin still could not have Harry Potter banned if she had made it in office. She would have had very little support if any support at all. She alone can not make those decisions, there would be no reason to fear such a thing. There maybe (stress on maybe because I am not giving an opinion either way) other reasons to have feared her in office but banning Harry Potter would not have happened.
iwantorlando05 : I live so deep in the south (excuse the southern slang) you could spit and hit Florida from my house. It sounds to me like you are saying all Republicans are Strong Right Wingers (Extremists) that is not true. I registered Republican at 18yrs old (that was a little way back) but when Nov. elections roll around I never vote by party I vote for who I feel has the peoples and countrys best interest at heart. I have voted for Democrats, Republicans and yes a liberal at times. I do not think there are as many extremists as you think , I know many, many people who have done the same as I have and voted outside their proclaimed party. I do run across some extreme Right Wingers and although they have the right to their opinion they do stress me beyond my stress point.

EVERYONE, PLEASE STOP. We could go on like this for bloody weeks and I can assure you that the situation will NOT have changed. Frankly I am astounded that factchecker is so... idiotic. What amazes me even more is that he supplants my comments with stupid comments, many of which refer to me being 15 years old, that I am not a resident of America, and that George Bush "must be smart" because he went to "Yale". Honestly, factchecker, youre 50 years old? Im afraid to say that youve never allowed your mind to roam around a bit. Instead, as someone said before, youve got your face on George Bushs ass. TAKE IT OFF ALREADY.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 22:21:32
Do any of you know why comments like these of HPFANTimothy are allowed here? You are a very rude person. You want everyone to stop but single me out and name call. No matter what your age, you are immature. I only mentioned that you are 15 in one post as did you. If the best you can do to support your point of view is call people idiots or imbeciles, you are only making yourself look foolish. I didnt say Bush must be smart. I said you cant be an imbecile and be admitted to Yale and that is true.
Somebody mentioned earlier that I could have contacted Andrew and discussed this posting. I didnt do that but I did send feedback about it before I started commenting. If any of you know how to get one foul mouthed teen booted from this site, please do.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-03 23:40:19
factchecker, the fact that youre 50 years old and that you waste your time arguing on a Harry Potter fan site tells me something about your life. And I can tell you, its not a good something.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 00:20:20
HPFANTimothy, Im only stating facts which you disagree with. Maybe if you ever mature, you will stop behaving so poorly. As far as your bad language and insults go, Ive reported it. Maybe they wll take care of it but, if not, I wont mind. HPFANTimothy, I will do as I please, where I please, and that would fall under the catagory of none of your business. I could care less about your silly opinions of me. It seems to me that your parents have failed you. You already have a nasty disposition and lack of respect for your elders. Educate yourself so that, in the future, you will have more to add to a conversation than childish insults.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 02:47:05
factchecker, you have been more insulting than I have. Youre very wrong in saying this is none of my business; if you didnt want an argument, then you shouldnt have started one. Whats more, youre discussing your "views" on an open comment board, and as such, you will find that people do debate, and sometimes rebuttals can be insulting. Get over it. I have been coming on MuggleNet since 2001. Ive had my fair share. And how dare you say that my parents have failed. You know absolutely nothing. Whats more, you know absolutely nothing about this book that this news headline is about. So dont share your views, stop telling me that Im insulting (because Im actually not) and grow up.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 02:53:52
Whats more, factchecker, I am not throwing out childing insults. Im only angry because you keep coming back and implying that Im a moronic little teenager. The FACT IS that the Bush Administration probably DID deny JK Rowing the award. If this book has said so, then its probably true. I mean, WHAT WOULD THE AUTHOR GAIN IN LYING? True, the Bushs probably did like Harry Potter. However, they would hardly award someone something if they thought it would cause a major fuss. And too right, it would have caused a major fuss. Im sure that many of Bushs supporters would have jumped up and down and yelled that he was promoting witchcraft. So, why would Bush want that? Wouldnt it be MUCH EASIER just to dent Jo the medal? So, thats what he did. ---Sorry, factchecker, but this article is probably true. So move on.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 02:59:46
HPFANTimothy, you said that I was wasting my time on a Harry Potter fan site and that is absolutely none of your business. Apparently you arent perceptive enough to see that was what I was referring to. If you think you arent insulting and immature, look at your second post back from this last one. You telling me to grow up is laughable. You would be the pot calling the kettle black. The point, which you are too naive to understand, is that Matt Latimer wrote something malicious and you believe it despite there being no supporting evidence. There is much evidence to the contrary. Now go ask mommy and daddy to teach you some manners.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 03:10:38
HPFANTimothy, you posted twice so the post I was referring to would be back one more. So you think probably is good enough for you to call something a fact? They obviously didnt give her the award. Not every famous person gets the award and I doubt if most know much about the award. They just say she deserves it. You think it is probably true because Latimer said it? What would he gain? I have said it over and over but you have your blinders on. MONEY. Increased book sales. You want it to be true so you take it at face value instead of with a grain of salt.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 03:15:25
factchecker, im with hpfantimothy on this one. youre being a complete douchebag and you did start it. forgive me if i dont take anything you write seriously.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 03:25:00
ginnysthestral, lol. I didnt start anything and I didnt tell anyone to press their face against somebodys posterior. Maybe you should go back and read the comments and check your facts. Your insulting language shows your level. Its common to name call when you have nothing to add that is constructive. If the shoe fits, why keep your foot in your mouth?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 03:26:34
@factchecker: you seem to REALLY enjoy insulting ppl. I mean, seriously. All HPFANTImothy did was make a few posts, and he was actually good in the beginning but then you started up with posts like he was all stupid and you were superior..... sorry dude, but thats RUDE. Whats more I agre with HPFAN. Dude, your the one being rude and insulting this guys book and i second HPFANTimothy..... what would the author gain by lying???? it makes no sense. so I reckon its true.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 03:27:30
Having not read the comments, I apologize if I repeat anyone above me.
First of all, once again, its clear that Mr. Bush probably hasnt read the books. Or was too concerned about pleasing certain voters to promote her to win this Award. Im very hesitant to say this because it has so many connotations to it. Whats done is done. We cant do anything to change Mr. Bushs mind.
However, we do know Barrack Obama read all seven of the Potter books to his Girls, taught them to read while using the books. Im sure, like many Parents, if he felt they had promoted witchcraft, he wouldnt have read them to Sasha and Maliah (sorry if I spelled her name wrong). He in fact has said He himself is a Harry Potter fan. President Obama even promoted the books in a speech he gave on Education.
As lame as this sounds, maybe there is some way we can politely encourage Mr. Obama to give this to her. He is, after all the President of the United States. Politics aside, partisanship aside, she should be given some type of award for her work for so many Children.
Again, Ill admit I havent read the story for Im sleep deprived, so if this has been mentioned in the article, I do apologize and ask for your patience.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 03:36:55
ScrabbleOfBabble, you may be the same person but you have it wrong. Maybe you overlooked that comment about me having my face pressed against George Bushs (blank). I havent name called. I havent made it personal unless attacked and, frankly, I could care less who you agree with regarding this issue. Perhaps you havent read all of the comments from the beginning. Leslie33, finally the voice of reason (and on point) instead if name calling and bashing. Nice comment.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 03:47:38
ScrabbleOfBabble, you asked, "what would the author gain by lying". I have said it several times so once again Ill put it in caps. Maybe youll see it. MONEY. Publishers often encourage authors to include something malicious, titillating, or salacious to help increase book sales by getting more press notice, as in this case. You may choose to believe it but, as we have said in many comments, there is no supporting evidence that what Latimer said is true so, it shouldnt be accepted as fact.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 03:54:38
Leslie33, I appreciate what you wrote but, since you said you didnt read the comments, I want to let you know this. The Bush family has praised the books and Jo many times. Laura Bush said they were on her favorites list and partially decorated the White House in an HP theme for Christmas in 2003.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 04:22:26
factchecker, you most definitely can be an imbecile and graduate from Yale. You just need money and power. Both of which were at Bushs disposal. He could get his dog to attend Harvard if he wanted to spend a little money.

who needs bloody americans any way. JK gets more of her UK fans

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 04:58:08
Okay, seriously, all this has got to stop. Many of you have already said it before, but decided to add more to the arguement... Its obvious that we all have our own opinions, and none of us are being swayed, so what is the point with all this bickering? This is the same problem the US is facing now. We must put a stop to it because it is getting us no where. Some of us believe that the statement put here on MuggleNet is good, others not, but we cant please everyone, so please just stop...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 05:18:20
Veggie_Potter, okay. I just hate when people call people imbeciles, idiots, etc. rather than be fair and polite. I didnt like GW but he is not an imbecile. I would not insult the office at any time or the current President like that, despite not approving of his policies. Since your last comment was polite and didnt add to the debate, Ill let it lay there if possible.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 10:34:53
I still think they should create a JK Rowling award because I dont think we really have an award that truly describes what she has accomplished with her work. It may also inspire more writers to try and do the same.
That is all I am going to say because I absolutely agree with Veggie_Potter VERY WELL SAID (not yelling just stressing how well put)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 12:35:15
I agree with Veggie_Potter and ladyshadow_8. But I just have to say, LeM, I think most "bloody americans" are just fine, thank you very much. Please do not stereotype.

FACTCHECKER: Im going to be nice and just say two words for you. SHUTUP...PLEASE. You kind of remind me of a user here named AnyaMarcos who was just an obnoxious adult. NO ONE said that Bush HATES Harry Potter.. I too believe he liked them, but his administration sure DID NOT. Its kind of like Pontious Pilate in the Bible. He didnt think Jesus should be crucified, but if he DID that, then EVERYONE would be against him. So he let the people have their way with Jesus, but told the crowd that his blood is not on his hands. I feel thats the same way with Bush. And bottom line, say what you will about Bush going to Harvard.. he wasnt a very Smart and ARTICULATE man. He MAY have been knowledgeable, but certainly NOT WISE.. otherwise WHY ARE WE IN THIS RECESSION??? So please END this and lets move on...God theres like 3 things that should NOT be discussed in forums: Religion, Race, and Politics

I cant belive some of these comments. Gregoire, of course Andrew should post this, its HP news and this is a HP site, plus the post is pretty un biased if you actually stop and read it. Its quoting facts about a possibly biased book, thats all, and the tittle has a question mark, meaning this may not be true. I think factchecker is making some good points that this may be false, so every body should just calm down, since, as prevoiusly quoted, BUSH LIKED THE BOOKS. So calm down a bit.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 14:51:51
Factchecker may want to stop throwing out insults, since your earlier posts were a teenie bit more intelegint that their becoming
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 16:41:32
I heard the Obamas didnt let their kids read the HP books because there wasnt enough of a representation of black (or half-black) characters. As such, everyone in the known world is pretty sure that the Obamas are horrible, horrible people and total and complete idiots, and entirely unfit to be the first family of the country. Down with everything BO says and does!!!
...I mean, if its posted online, and someone said it, it must be true, right? No need to bother with facts or stating rumors are just that. It does sound pretty silly when turned around, doesnt it?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 17:11:45
Veggie_Potter, sorry. I tried. The people who claim they want it to stop then stoop to lies and personal attacks. phoenixknighter, being nice isnt saying shut up to somebody. You said his administration sure did not like Harry Potter. PROVE IT. What evidence do you have? This topic IS political so if you dont want politiics inserted here, your complaint should go to Andrew. hpfan4444, you think I am insulting? I havent done any name calling and I guess you didnt notice people telling me to take my head out of George Bushs azz and all that? Veggie_Potter, I am still willing to let this go if some will take their own advice and shut up.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 20:32:21
Heres one solution: fans should lobby the Obama administration to give JKR the medal. She does deserve it.
I dont know if the claims in the book are true - Laura Bush had made prior statements that she loves Harry Potter as did the former president. But that does not necessarily inform us on the rationale for the administration for not awarding JKR the well deserved medal. We have no way of knowing whether or not the claim is true. Heres what we know: the Bushes themselves like Harry Potter quite a lot. Some members of the Bush administrations base did indeed think the books promote witchcraft. Thats all the evidence we have here. I dont think its fair to use this an event to bash the Bushes. Especially because we dont know what happened.
But I also want to add that it is absurd to use this to criticize Andrew for making the post. Andrew helps run a great news site and in making this post hes doing just that: reporting news related to Harry Potter. He never says in this post that he knows what happened nor does he bash President Bush. He simply states what the BBC says as is his job. So thank you Andrew for doing your job and keeping the rest of us informed.
There is no reason for this story to attract the ire of those who like or dislike the former presdient. The only thing it does is remind us that JKR should win that medal in the fture and lets hope that she does for her tremendous literary contribution to humanity.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 21:23:37
andrewslack, that is an excellent comment but I want to comment about one thing you included. You listed under things we know, "Some members of the Bush administrations base did indeed think the books promote witchcraft". We dont know that and there is no proof of it. One person writing it doesnt make it a fact. There is no corroborating evidence (but your other points are well taken). In 2007, George Bush gave the Medal of Freedom to Harper Lee (the author of "To Kill a Mockingbird"). She too was very deserving. Jo Rowling may deserve a lot of awards but it doesnt automatically mean there is some conspiracy to keep this one from her. The award can be given to foreign dignitaries but they may prefer to give it to Americans. Many people are too quick to believe this outlandish claim by Latimer but your comment was fair enough.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 22:24:38
@factchecker: Whatever. This is about Bushs administration not the current one so WHY would I even mention that! But I have a feeling the Obama administration would have no problem awarding JKR that award. Even if some else in the Bush administration made the decision. He was still the f*ckin president. Like I said...I believe its true! Bush had already screwed things up so much, he probably wanted to play it safe and not give her the reward. Everyone knows that all the people who claim Harry Potter promotes witchcraft are Bush supporters aka crazy southern Baptists aka republicans.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 22:44:48
iwantorlando05, President Obama has given the Medal of Feedom to 16 people so far but not JKR. Does he think she promotes witchcraft too? Its okay for you to believe its true but that does not make it true.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 22:58:41
iwantorlando05, when you make comments like "Everyone knows that all the people who claim Harry Potter promotes witchcraft are Bush supporters aka crazy southern Baptists aka republicans", it takes away credibility to the rest of your argument. Frankly, it makes you sound like a bigot.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 23:01:53
I find this whole conversation truly funny. Factchecker I understand your position, but your attitude is irksome. It is very superior, and just as childish as immaturity in its own way. Personally, I dont care whether the story is true or not. I agree with previous people in that I am happy JKR didnt get an award from the Bush Administration. It would have been a farce. As for all the Bush bashing, seriously people hes out of office, thank god, so leave him in the past where he belongs.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 23:16:16
GrangerLaughs, why not stick to the issue? There is always somebody who wants to opine about what I say and be rude but, if I respond, I am the one called insulting or immature. Am I supposed to care what your opinion about my attitude is? Maybe I find your attitude irksome and immature. So you think I am both superior and immature. Nice contrast. Id say people here who are my equals would not find me superior. As far as immaturity goes, if the shoe fits, why keep your foot in your mouth?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 23:21:50
Hi goldfish, there are many here, on both sides of the issue, who can have a civil discussion but, we seem to be fighting a losing battle with a few. It would seem that those whose mouths fly open the widest have the door to their minds closed tight.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 23:39:53
People, how about a little skepticism here - this is a quote from Ed Gillespie who was head of the RNC at the time -
"I was actually involved in the discussions in which the administration compiled, and then winnowed down for President Bush
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-04 23:41:57
factchecker, one can be superior and be immature at the same time. Immaturity has nothing to do with being superior. Look at Draco Malfoy for example, most of the time he acted very childish towards his peers and had a superiority complex. I dont want you to take this the wrong way and contort this into some insult towards you but it almost seems like you are over analyzing anything anyone else says that is an opposing view. Yes, Andrew posted this; yes, it is his job to do so. How could you find GrangerLaughs irksome when he/she only posted one comment (or what seems like one comment) so far? And how can you think you arent insulting someone when you post something saying "It would seem that those whose mouths fly open the widest have the door to their minds closed tight."? It seems at this point you are contradicting yourself. I understand your position but this is going overboard.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 00:04:06
FriggGiovanni, I didnt say you couldnt be superior and be immature at the same time. I said it was a nice contrast. How could I find GrangerLaughs irksome when he/she only posted one comment (or what seems like one comment) so far? I was only giving back what was said to me by the same person. Arent you being unfair and selective? It is said to me, you ignore it. I say it back, you have a problem with it. Cmon now.
You havent been rude so I am not rude. I give what I receive. That seems fair to me.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 00:15:02
factchecker, sorry it was seriously hard to understand if it was sarcasm when you said, "nice contrast" or the truth. I hadnt checked this message board, since a page back, between you and the other person (I believe, the Australian) were having the "little argument" back and forth, so I didnt know if the hostility was still brewing. Im not trying to be selective but when you posted, "It would seem... ...minds closed tight." (Pardon for the small quotation) it seemed like you were contradicting yourself and being a tad bit hard on GrangerLaughs.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 01:07:58
This has gone on long enough. Everyone, please stop. I think we will have to agree to disagree. Phoenixknighter: ANYAMARCOS! When I read that name I almost had a heart attack! I havent thought about her in AGES!! Thanks for your support :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 01:16:46
FriggGiovanni, thats fair. Yes, I may have been too hard on GrangerLaughs. You would have to read all of the comments to see the big picture but I am not asking you to do that. I dont always do that myself. Did you read about DH being split somewhere near the Malfoy Manor scene? I wonder if the Bush administration would have objected (I just had to add this sentence. I couldnt help myself. LOL).
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 01:40:20
Who says LOL at the age of 50... sorry, I couldnt help myself.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 02:04:38
HPFANTimothy, you keep saying it has gone on long enough (and want it to stop) but you keep taking cheap shots and making it personal. Everyone I know on the internet, of all ages, use LOL. If you want it to stop, try ignoring me, as I tried to ignore you, instead of being a brat. You objected to me once mentioning that you are 15 but continue to make comments about my age (that wiill never bother me so keep trying). You might come across as more mature and sincere if you would stop fixating on me.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 04:32:47
I apologise, factchecker. It was very wrong of me. I just wanted to get back at you. Clearly, I exposed a weakness.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 05:36:34
I just hope they put a lot of detail in the two DH movies. Otherwise, a lot of fans will be angered ...yet again.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 14:20:25
Factchecker, i agree with everything you have said except your comment about grangerlaughs seemed harsh. I dont believe this, because George W. Bush and Laura Bush have stated that they like Harry Potter. I also dont think that a low ranking speech writer is in the presidents inner circle. As for what he would have to gain, LOTS and LOTS of money.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 17:13:20
Stick to the issue? Alright Factchecker. Shall we talk about Bush and his administration? This article is stupid. You cant really bash Bush about because if it is true it is all because of his politics and not his personal views on HP. Bush was ruled by right wing evangelicals. If he had given an award to JKR it mightve upset all of those homely Laura Mallorys out there. Since I dont know firsthand how Bush feels about HP I cant say anything about his feelings towards the issue. As to the speechwriter, when has anyone in Washington ever told the truth and not made money off of it? So, this article is nothing new. End of story, end of argument.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-10-05 21:45:42
GrangerLaughs, no offense but, Ill decide for myself when it is the end. You are right that it is a stupid article and the point is that statements like Bush being ruled by right wing evangelists have no basis in fact. If that is your opinion, thats fine but, when you state it as if it is a fact, thats where you are wrong. This article has no corroborating evidence so it is unfair to blindly accept it or use it as an excuse for childish bashing (not saying you did that). lunasbbfle, you are right. It is about the money and the truth doesnt matter to somebody like Latimer. HPFANTimothy, I have no weaknesses but I accept your apology. FriggGiovanni, what do think the will do about the Burrow? It was consumed by fire in HBP (the movie). It was never destroyed in the books. Will they magically restore it or will the scenes be elsewhere? They dont seem to think the books have what they want since they stray so far. HBP (the film) had very little about Snape and he was the HBP. It seems like they want more sex and violence and less adventure and mystery. Too much of teenage hormones and death and destruction and not enough plot in the film. Youd think Rowling would be insulted as if there isnt enough great material in the books that they could use.

haha yeah HPFANTimothy ... How can ANY of us forget that Racist, Homophobic, self-righteous Devil Anyamarcos... I think he/she/it/whatever was the WORST THING that ever happened to Mugglenet.. ITs like a virus, or worse.. like Lord Voldemort himself! Anyamarcos STILL has a profile here, and can comment whenever it feels like.. personally I think Andrew up in Mugglenet ENJOYS watching the Virus spread its FILTH here.. She still has posts of you and I up in her journal blogs, you know that?

Hey factchecker I have to correct you on something... DONT WORRY its not about politics anymore lol. screw that. Its about the HBP movie. I LOVED it.. as the series grows darker, of course it gets more violent and grim. Deathly Hallows has DEATH written all over it, literally! From Professor Charity Burbage to Lord Voldemort, At least 2 people die in EVERY CHAPTER! lol So I think David Yates portrayed everything well in the movie. The idea of Adventure and mystery gets smaller as the characters get older too, its now a game of life and death. In the book HBP, JK Rowling even wrote something about Harry near the end of the book after Dumbledores death. Saying that Harry Potter was no longer that curious little boy he once was who was always looking for adventure. And the book was FULL of teenage hormones.. Honestly that book had MORE romance in it then the Movie! They took out lots of romantic scenes that were in the book, to keep it from becoming too sappy. Harry and Ginny didnt even GO OUT in this movie, which i liked.. save that for later at the end of DH. And its true Snape didnt have much talking, but he had just as much screen time as portrayed in the book. The ONLY thing I was upset about this film was the lack of characterization of Fenrir Greyback.. HE HAD NO LINES! they didnt even introduce him properly, the average movie-goer wont know what his name is unless they look at the ominous newspapers on the walls.

phoenixknighter & factchecker : I too liked the movie but, I do wish they had left out the burrow scene and (call me crazy its ok most people do :) ) had Dumbledore pick Harry up at the Dursleys. I really wanted to see him get under their skin good.. LOL

Just to comment on the actual story, just because the Bush Administration did something stupid it doesnt mean that Bush himself believed it ok. IF you actually look at the American Government System the president doesnt have a lot of power. So the board that deemed the HP books unworthy didnt necessarily have to agree with Bush. Both George and Laura Bush were big fans of the Harry Potter series and so most likely they didnt agree with the decision. Besides the guy who wrote that book most likely did it for attention b/c people were getting sick of the Bush Administration.

I find it bizarre, given the fact that the Former First Lady was a librarian and is rather open-minded when it comes to literature. I understand she has read the books.
Sigh.
