Warwick Davis explains Flitwick's change in look
Warwick Davis explains Flitwick's change in look Warwick Davis answered the classic 'New look Flitwick' question via Twitter today. Why did Flitwick's look change for Prisoner of Azkaban?

When it came time to shoot 'Azkaban', there was no mention of Flitwick' in the script. However, the producer still wanted me to be in the movie so he asked if I would play the role of 'Choir Master'. Of course, I said 'yes'. When it came time to shoot 'Goblet of Fire' the director, Michael Newell said he liked the look of the choir master, and from that moment, the character became known as 'Flitwick.'

You may recall that Davis answered the same question when the MuggleCasters interviewed him. Read the transcript here.

Check out Davis' Twitter right here.

I thought he should play Hagrid

I love Flitwick!!!! : )

I thought was so stupid. Alfonso Cauron ruined everything about PoA.

Alfonso Cauron did ruin everything.... he was a terrible choice for director, and i hope we dont see his return, that would be...well terrible to say the least! i love W.D. but i was sad abotu the chance in flitwicks appearance. the first time they showed him he was perfect, and now he doesnt look at all like JKR described him. i mean it wasnt Alfonso Cauron's character to change...it's annoying....

Posted by PotionsMistress Oct 11th 2009

i meant change, not chance...sorry

Posted by Erfa Oct 11th 2009

In other words, Flitwick has not been in the films since Chamber of Secrets. The choir master is simply a non-canon character. OK, I'm happy with that explanation. :-)

Posted by Roxy2005 Oct 11th 2009

I loved Warwick since he was in Star Wars and then when he played Willow, I think he is wonderful. I am glad to see he was kept in the cast. how ever why couldn't he just been kept as the character. After all with the gray hair and everything it would have gone along with the Flitwick there is no reason the look had to change. I agree Alfonso Cauron should never been one of HP's director. Sadly the change was excepted by others and now going back would not work. Either way I enjoy still seeing Warwick in the HP films and look to see him in 7 part 1 and 2 or at least in the final battle of part 2.

i prefer the earlier flitwick look..its was 100times better

Posted by camken Oct 11th 2009

the new flitwick looks cool but doesnt look like flitwick. It could be worse. He could have ended up looking like Mini-Me

Posted by Gryffindor_Seeker_7 Oct 11th 2009

Oh, that explains a lot! I always wondered why that was. But I liked the old look so much more! It was a lot more how I envisioned Flitwick in the books. The old look was a lot better. :-(

Posted by iwantorlando05 Oct 11th 2009

I just always assumed Flitwick had some kind fascination with Dumbledore in the first two films so he dressed like him. But in POA that fascination turned to Snape, so he started copying that look....

Posted by phoenix_fire613 Oct 11th 2009

I guess it's just me, but I like the new Flitwick look a lot more than the old one. Whatever it is, Davis is brilliant.

Posted by Tauriel Oct 11th 2009

Actually, guys, you seem to forget that JKR didn't particularly like the Flitwick in the first two films - mainly because they made him look like a goblin, whereas he definitely WASN'T one. He was just a really short guy. . Oh, and Alfonso Cuaron was the best thing that happened to the HP films.

Posted by Roxy2005 Oct 11th 2009

Tauriel 9, As you see here most of us here disagree with you. :P

Posted by Roxy2005 Oct 11th 2009

opps that was just Teuriel no number 9, anyway, over all most of us here disagree

I remember him answering this question before, and the answer still makes a lot of sense. It would be nice for him to play the older Professor Flitwick again, but I do like him as the younger Flitwick too. Would be cool to see him play both the cannon Flitwick, and his non-cannon nephew. Alfonzo, while not my favorite director, made some necessary and great changes, imo. I do admit that the severe difference between the first two and PoA was a bit shocking, but once I got used to it, I really liked it.

FINALLY there're people here who AGREE with me about Alfonso Cuaron... it's true he did change some things in Harry Potter that benefitted the franchise.. but he really EFFED UP a lot of plot points and characters... I even forgot this guy was Flitwick..the Marauders will FOREVER BE a plot hole. To make matters worse, Cuaron even wanted to do more damage to the movie.. thank God David Yates is the Director for the rest of the films.. he actually INCLUDES minor details in the book like Arnold the Pygmypuff in HBP. WHO woulda thought any director would remember about that guy? lol

@Tauriel: I didn't like his look in the first two films either. When I read the books...I never pictured him being that old. But I think I DO remember JK Rowling saying Flitwick was part Goblin.

Posted by kiwiHarryPotter Oct 11th 2009

Just read the MuggleCast transcript. Warwick Davis made note that Alfonso wanted to leave his mark on the series. In being a series my feeling is he didn't need to make his mark by completely changing the entire look of the films. Not the best idea for continuity reasons.

Posted by Movie6isgonnastink Oct 11th 2009

I HATE that stupid choir director character! He's not funny at all. They should make Warwick Davis go back to being the old Flitwick, even though the old Flitwick looks like a goblin, old Flitwick is WAY better then the stupid new one. All I know is that stupid little choir director better not be fighting Voldemort head to head in the last movie, that would look completely ridiculous. (those of you who remember from book 7 Flitwick, McGonogall, and Slughorn were all fighting Voldemort together at one point in the final battle) I don't really care that much, but just saying I think the choir director character is so stupid, with everything else they're leaving out.

Posted by kiwiHarryPotter Oct 11th 2009

and I also thought Flitwicks old look was better. I think Jo's thoughts were she was a little surprised by his look but she always figured ha had a bit of goblin in him.

Posted by FF_Voldemort Oct 12th 2009

Both Flitwicks are cool (old one more). But last thing on my mind his how a minor character looks. ...And Alfonso rocks. But thats opinion.

The old flitwick looked like a retarded muppet, poor Warwick. Thank God for Alfonzo. The only director to make a vaguely interesting HP movie.

Posted by Luckydoggy Oct 12th 2009

I liked the old flitwick better.

Posted by GracelessDementor Oct 12th 2009

I really liked HP 3. Alfonso really brought something cool to it and he got rid of all the darn cheesiness yet I will admit it was annoying having the huge gaps in the story. I have to disagree with the guy who said David Heyman is the best... David Heyman (in my opinion) is the worst director HP has ever had my expectations of Deathly Hallows has gone done because he does a crap job. He changes everything and his layout is just garbage. He's trying to make money... He doesn't actually love Harry Potter like we do! Why did they hire him for the last movies since Order of the Phoenix was the worst Harry Potter Film ever? I am sorry for ranting, but this just the beginning of my dislike of this guy!

Posted by Tauriel Oct 12th 2009

GracelessDementor, you mean David Yates, not Heyman. David Yates is a really good director (check out his BBC miniseries, State of Play, it's a BRILLIANT thriller), but definitely NOT for HP. He completely butchered OOTP, which was utterly disjointed and just a mess of scenes thrown together. And HBP was not much better.

Posted by phoenixknighter Oct 12th 2009

I have to DISAGREE with both of you guys Tauriel and GracelessDementor... but then again, the majority of the cast, studio and people loved David Yates.. that's why he's still there ;)

Posted by Kamion Oct 14th 2009

I really loved the change in looks for Flitwick, mainly because it showed you more of Warwick Davis himself. Davis has a very distincted head what may be seen. I always hate it when he is completely hidden beneath all layers of makeup. He could be an anybody and it makes him a kind of extra, instead of a full character. Robbi Coltrane is, even beneath the immense Hagrid beard still Robby Coltrane, Davis often is conplete moving furniture and that does not justice to the great actor he is. Second the new look was more original for a wizard professor, in the first look he was was just a boring classic story book gnoom.
