Celebrating the release of the new book-to-film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, TIME Magazine has a new feature looking popular books turned into popular films. The Harry Potter series is of course included on this list: Though J.K. Rowling's 1997 book had already sold hundreds of thousands of copies by the time Hollywood released its first Potter film, Sorcerer's Stone turned the boy wizard into an international pop icon virtually overnight. The movie earned close to $1 billion at the box office and guaranteed that the remaining books in the series would find their way to the big screen. The last installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II, is expected to be released in the summer of 2011. See the entire list - which looks at Willy Wonka, Stuart Little, and many others - at this link. Thanks to Vivi for the tip!

No surprise there! Although, I do think the first and second movies were the best, only because they were the most loyal to the books. :3

Awesome!! i think a lot of book to film adaptations are pretty great, especially Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Willy Wonka, and hopefully Where the Wild Things ARe. I cant wait to see what Peter Jackson did with The Lovely Bones since its one of my favorite books and I also cant wait to see Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland. Some book to movie adaptations have been horrible though. For example, they completely butchered The Golden Compass.

@ iwantorlando05, Twilight is amother example of a bad movie adaptation... except it was from extremely bad to hilariously bad. x3

Amazing ! And, I also have to agree with superfish31, the first two movies were indeed the most loyal to the books.

The first two movies were the most loyal because they were the easiest to adapt to film. The further you get into the HP series, the more complex the story gets and the longer the book gets so its harder to fit everything in there. The first two books are pretty small and the storyline isnt that intertwined yet. But I like how when they got to movie 3 they started to darken the tone of the films just like in the books and even though they had to take a lot of stuff out they still did a wonderful job capturing the tone of the books and fitting in the main plot lines. I think they have messed up along the way but theyve worked around it. For example, they have yet to mention the 2-way mirror in the films and that plays a big part in Deathly Hallows, but I have a feeling they will make it work.

I wonder why US publishers feel the need to change things specifically for the US market. The original "Philosophers Stone" was good enough for the rest of the world and, of course, actually has meaning. The text was changed, too. (Its not nearly as good, either). Same with "Northern Lights" being changed to "The Golden Compass". Its insulting and you all deserve better.
