MTV has an interesting article looking at how the creators of the upcoming film X-Men: First Class are using Potter as an example of what they want to do:
"Harry Potter is a bit of a role model for us, absolutely," she said. "But we want it to be like the recent, darker Potters. It should not be a kiddie movie—we're in the 'X-Men' world so you can't suddenly change the tone."
Even the film's cast of characters will follow Potter's footsteps insofar as getting into mischievous adventures that Xavier wouldn't approve of.
"There's nothing more interesting than a bad kid, and this is full of naughty children," said Donner. "Cyclops, for example—he's a tough kid that bobbed from foster home to foster home, until he ends up at the school and becomes the leader."
Are they copy cats or coming up with an original idea?

Seeing as a lot of the X-Men story lines were created long before Harry Potter, I dont see it as copying. They are simply noting what is popular, such as the ideas in Harry Potter, and choosing similar ideas from the already existing X-Men universe and running with it. Nothing wrong it that.

As a fan of the "X-Men" movies, Im surprised at the Harry Potter Tie-in. But I am delighted they are working on another movie in the series.

I dont see it as copying because they are merely using ideas and are devloping or looking at doing things that are alike the Potter world. Many films and books have been adapted or used techniques from others.

Well, you know what they say: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. JKR certainly knew it. Does Cinderella ring any bells?--the unwanted step relative who is used and abused, get the audience in sympathy with them immediately and then take it from there with your own ideas. Why mess with proven formulas? So, go X-Men!

Well guys, its NOT suprising AT ALL the similarities between Harry Potter and X-Men.. they both have a school for mutants, or wizards and witches and they train how to use their powers..The Order of the Phoenix and the Death Eaters is like the X-Men and the Brotherhood.. Professor X and Professor Xavier both die.. need I say more? lol But yeah, this is nice ;)

X-Men movies coming soon: Wolverine 2, X-Men:First Class, Deadpool, X-Men Origins:Magneto, and possibly X-Men 4. But yeah, I didnt think First Class would be that interesting until now they are going for the Potter bent.

Well, the first class cast is the ORIGINAL Xmen, which totally predates Harry Potter. I think theyre more talking about the tone, the level of violence/action/comedy, etc.

Few ideas are "original."

Well if anyone film franchise is going to be used as an example then it better be Harry Potter. Its 6 films in and its still making almost 1 billion dollars per film. Plus its one of the only films...if not the ONLY film about kids attending a special school for students with some kind of magical ability. So I think its a good idea.

Theyre not Copying Harry Potter. Theyre just using the HP films as a role model. A lot of franchises have tried to follow Harry Potter. There were tons of fantasy books written before and after Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings that have tried to make films...some of them have been successful and others not so much. Harry Potter is the model for X-men because its pretty much One-of-a-kind, so who else are they going to model?

Provably there is a similarity, but remember each one of them show us something different about human life, even when this characters are fiction. May be we can learn something from fiction and put it in practice. Or we can go to the Best Book and find teaching in there for living good.

X-Men has been COPYING from Harry Potter right from the GET-GO. Remember the HORRIFIC X-Men 3? The beginning with Jean Gray was taken RIGHT from HBP when Dumbledore visits Tom Riddle. And some stupid comic fans were saying that Harry Potter copied, lol. Lets see. HBP book was published 2005.. X-Men 3 came out 2006... oh yeah! HP really copied from X-Men! lol *sarcasm*

X-Men has been around as a franchise since 1963, so I highly doubt they have been copying Harry Potter. As a fan of both, I can tell you that X-Men and Harry Potter share a lot of similarities (and much of these in the X-Men predate HP), so it only makes sense for them to use a similar formula and draw inspiration from the HP films. Anyone who can make a statement that "X-Men has been copying Harry Potter from the get-go" needs to do more research. X-men 3 was largely based on "The House of M" storyline, it has little, if anything, to do with Harry Potter.

oh yeah MorningLight .. i already now that all those Marvel Comics.. including Spider-Man has been out since the 60s.. im talking about the Movies. Everyone did say the "Dark Phoenix Saga" of X-Men 3 was NOTHING like the original story in the comics.. Same thing as the Dreadful black symbiote in Spider-Man 3
