Jessica Stevenson to play Mafalda Hopkirk
Rumors have passed around the web for a few days now concerning Jessica Stevenson's arrival onto the cast of Order of the Phoenix. However, Yahoo! News is reporting today that she has been cast for the role of Mafalda Hopkirk, who works in the Improper Use of Magic Office at the Ministry of Magic.

You can see a photo of Jessica right here. HPFZ had originally reported this a few days ago.

WHY DO THEY NEED TO CAST A CHARACTER THAT ISN'T SEEN IN PERSON FOR THE BOOK?!!!! COULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME!?

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Aug 24th 2006

Okay the lot of you, don't get upset at what I'm going to say, but I think Jessica Stevenson would have made a better Tonks than Natalia Tena....If you haven't seen Shaun of the Dead, you should...great movie. As far as Mafalda Hopkirk goes, I also don't really remember her, but if she indeed only writes the letters to Harry, this shows that the movie is taking a personality of its own and not following the book....somewhat disappointing.

Mafalda was also the name of the Weasley's obnoxious cousin who JKR had appearing in book 4 but cut her out because she wasnt really necessary. A short bit of info about her is on JKR's page somewhere. She must really like that name (not quite sure why. no offense if any one out there is named Mafalda)

Posted by GorgeousGinnyxoxoxox Aug 24th 2006

ummm....who the heck is Mafalda Hopkirk???? Oh well hope she's good at playing Mafalda Hopkirk whoever that is!!!!!!

Posted by Grey Aug 24th 2006

Is she the lady from "Shawn of the Dead"? I think she is... That's pretty funny.

Posted by Grey Aug 24th 2006

Sorry, "Shaun of the Dead", and yeah, I'm pretty sure that this pic is from that movie. Now when I'll see her in the improper use of magic office all I'll be able to think about are those zombies...

Posted by JarlinFo07 Aug 24th 2006

Well, atleast it seems like they're surprisingly leaving a lot of things in OoTP, especially if they cast a role as small as Mafalda.

Posted by dobbyroxmysox Aug 24th 2006

wow i dont noe who maflada or jessica is.. and im starting to loose interest in the ~5th movieeeeeeeee~i hope they dont cut out the reeeellyy important characters and put randomn ones in

Posted by dobbyroxmysox Aug 24th 2006

woww i have no idea who this maflalda and jessica is.... im really starting to loose interest in the 5th movieee. i hope they dont put in some randamn @$$ charecters and leave impotant ones outt

Posted by iwishiwashermione Aug 24th 2006

I've read the fifth book about a billion times, but am I the only one who doesn't know who this mafalda hopkirk is? I know this is "harry potter" news, but it just doesn't seem that "important". no offense to mugglenet!!

Posted by WickedWitch Aug 24th 2006

okay... we don't even see that character... as everyone here already noticed. Good anyway

Posted by f1r3b0lt Aug 24th 2006

she looks perfect for this role, no matter how small it is. She's just as i imagined a miss mafalda hopkirk:)

Posted by Deppified Aug 24th 2006

Oh, I didn't think Jo showed her in the book .. just her name in the letters Harry got from the Ministry .. wellwell, maybe she will appear somewhere in the movie.

Posted by Arinia Aug 25th 2006

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's a bit confused by this. I mean really there are other characters to focus on! GAH!

Posted by mHarryPotterm Aug 25th 2006

mafalda who? mmm...doesn't ring a bell. oh well

Posted by mHarryPotterm Aug 25th 2006

wait, i got a theory. sorry if someone's already said this, {i have not read all comments}, but maybe jkr is going to put mafalda in the 7th book, and told the ppl making the 5th movie to introduce her now...just a thought. I mean, if she doesn't even show up in the book, there HAS to be a reason why they cast her. Chances are she is going to be in book 7. It is disappointing how many ppl they left out in movie 4: bill, charlie, bagman, winky...and the other ones 2 like percy and mrs. weasley. Maybe they're trying to get everyone in this movie. btw, what are they going to do about bill??? they haven't even introduced him yet and he plays a BIG role in book 6. ok, i'm way off track sorry lol. anyway, Mafalda = 7th book

Posted by scurvy_cur Aug 25th 2006

well obviously this character isnt very major but i would still love to see her in OotP she is a great actress and sooo funny!

Posted by Missphoenix Aug 25th 2006

OMG She is awesome i loved her in Shaun of the Dead and in Spaced !!!! She is so funny!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!

Posted by Morgan212324 Aug 25th 2006

i remember her signing all the letters from the Improper use of Magic department but i dont remember actually seeing her. but its funny cause although she is really minor and all that.. i actually pictured her to look like that.. i mean when she signed the letters and stuff. i just imagined this lady.. and jessica is who i pictured.. well not exactly but pretty close.. nice job, andrew =] -jenny

Posted by elmanie Aug 25th 2006

My gob. I love this woman. She is so funny. Spaced is one of my favourite shows.

Posted by DracoMalfoys_wife Aug 25th 2006

Who's Mafalda?!?! ^_^

Posted by Potter_Person Aug 25th 2006

um, okay. she looks alright i guess. personally i would rather have a voice clip, though, because i don't think were really going to see her, are we?

Posted by phoenixlament Aug 25th 2006

they never showed mafalda hopkirk in the book though! all i remember is that she was the lady who sent those letters about harry's hearing. but she never actually showed up...whatttt.... but she looks strict-ish sorta...so i guess she would be okay.

Posted by HarrylurvesGinny Aug 25th 2006

hmm koolness..never heared of the actress lady before (sorry, her name escapes me, and i can't be bothered to look)

Posted by uknowho Aug 25th 2006

i thought she was just mentioned... is she going to be taking the place of amelia bones perchance? i hope not. they change the plot enough as it is.

Posted by arabesque Aug 25th 2006

Hahha, ok, I don't even remember her in the book.

Posted by libbysmom Aug 25th 2006

I know it's pointless to be nitpicky about the movies because they will never be anywhere near as good as the books, but here I go... Why in the world would the cast Mafalda Hopkirk (granted, I have always loved the way she signed her letters) but not cast Mundungus Fletcher? It seems that casting Dung would be a lot more important than a faceless Ministry official. But hey, what do I know? I'm only a fan.

Posted by rhea Aug 25th 2006

who is she???

Posted by Grey Aug 25th 2006

Mafalda Hopkirk is the lady that signs the improper use of magic letters-- every time Harry is going to expelled. I even remember how Jim Dale did her voice on the audio books... sounds sort of funny. And I'm sure that Jessica lady is from "Shaun of the Dead." I wonder if they make the infery chase after Mafalda in the 7th book. That would be pretty sweet:) I wonder if Mafalda is important to the 7th book sense they've cast her. + how cool is the name Malalda Hopkirk?

Posted by roadtripkaraoke Aug 25th 2006

I LOVE MALFALDA HOPKIRK! Serious. She has one of the best names in the series. Awesome.

Posted by Micino Aug 26th 2006

Interesting, we never actually met her in the books, just those letters that she sent Harry. I don't think she'll have a speaking part though, unless it's just a few lines. Otherwise, I think it'll just be a shot of her when they are in the Ministry. Hmmm, should be interesting.

Posted by flipgirl Aug 26th 2006

I've seen a picture of her... she's quite pretty actually. I saw it on Harry Potter Fan Zone, better known as HPFZ. There's also like a million pictures of Tonks who I find the oppisite of atractive. She's not too good looking and has pink and purple hair. Anywhoo, when do we even see her. All we see are her letters in the books. I don't think we see her in Harry's trial. ... Maybe we do... I've read the book about 13 million times.

Posted by albusisonholiday Aug 27th 2006

Hmmm...maybe the reason that Quidditch was cut from this movie was to make room for gratuitous scenes such as this involving characters that were only mentioned briefly in the books...So, basically, we don't get to hear the tune to "Weasley is our King", but instead are treated to a random scene involving ministry officials. Meh.

Posted by britishwannabe Aug 27th 2006

who the hell is mafalda hopkirk? She's pretty much a background character right?

Posted by Dancer_1021 Aug 28th 2006

Thats awesome. Hopefully she is good.=]

Posted by dobbyz_left_sock Aug 28th 2006

what is it w/ u ppl hu dont remember her???? havent u read the book???? personally i am pissed that they cut quidditch so they could have time to put in faceless ministry officials that jkr barely mentions in the book...the little things (ok somewhat big) like that bug me so much....you no like when the winshield wipers forget that little triangle in the center of the winshield......that annoys me....well i jusee well have to wait another 300 some odd days till we find out why on earth they put her in there....
