In a new interview with The Daily Mail, Imelda Staunton (who plays Dolores Umbridge in Order of the Phoenix) briefly mentions returning for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:
Another role that Staunton is to revive is that of the malicious Dolores Umbridge for the two-part film Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, which is due out next year.
'Now, that is a great role,' she says with relish. 'It was wonderful playing this baddie dressed in pink, and to be able to play her again is a real treat.'
Her first Harry Potter was in 2007. Did it change her life?
'No, not really. I don't get chased down the street by hordes of kids. I still live a very normal life.
'The one good thing is that I get a lot more good scripts coming through my letterbox. Vera Drake raised my profile in one way, and then Harry Potter in another.'

See, I DONT think she was perfect for the role. I think she needed to be a LOT more toad-like. With a wider face. And the Hem Hem wasnt as I "pictured" it, but thats to be expected once in a while. But I think she did a good job over all, and Im glad shes coming back.

Im so excited that shes returning for Deathly Hallows. Shes absolutely brilliant as Dolores Umbridge. I loved her!! She had the right mixture of bubbly, psychotic, deranged, evil, and insane. Im sure those last 4 are the same thing, but you get the point. She wasnt physically ugly like the character in the book, but she did a wonderful job of capturing Umbridges darkness. That woman has no soul. Shes the villain I think I hate the most even more than Voldemort and Bellatrix.

Can you imagine seeing her persecute Mrs. Cattermole (sp?) and Harry becoming angry watching it, reliving his own persecution from this woman? If her outfits got pinker the more nasty she got... well, our eyes are going to pop at her outfit in this one. I wonder if well get to see her leave her office and tap Mad-Eyes eye on the door to outrage the audience. Oh the possibilities!

When we say "perfect", I think we dont always mean perfect as in with the books, just perfect as in the way they turned out to be. Youre right to say the hem hem wasnt exactly the same as some of us imagined it, but who cares? It worked, and thats what matters to me. :) As for the toad face, she needs to be a bit appealing (iwantorlando elaborates on this a bit).
Dunno if that made sense but I thought she was perfect in all ways anyways hahaha.
And Im REALLY glad shes returning. i have been waiting for something like this. I mean, obviosly they couldnt cut this scene, but I was afraid theyd get another actress for some reason or she wouldnt be able to come back or theyd change stuff around... they can still change stuff around I guess, but at least Imelda will be there, and maybe her evilness can inspire the director to leave things the way they are. ;-)

@HeRonfan: I cant wait to see it. Its going to be so fantastic. Im already pissed off just thinking about it. That part made me so angry in the book, but I absolutely LOVED it when Harry stupefied Umbridge. I thought it was hilarious. He got so mad and he just went for it. Love it!

She was absolutely PERFECT in the role.. she made the character alot more realer (i hope thats how you spell it, i forgot lol) AS much as I hated her character, there was a kind of REASON for her actions according to her character in a way that I could see where she was coming from, so i didnt totally hate her like in the book. I dont know how to explain it, but when someone makes you Hate them, and at the same time Understand their character.. then theyre one HELL of a great actor.. It really surprised me when she didnt get an OSCAR nomination.. she should have!

Guys...she doesnt "need" to be appealing. Im not saying she needs to be the literary character on-screen, but physically appealing is the exact opposite of book Umbridge. We do want some continuity here. Film isnt all about ones looks.
Imeldas Umbridge works for the films even if it is very different from the Jos Umbridge that she wrote. Of course I like the character Jo wrote more than the character Imelda plays on-screen, but really, how can you help that? Its impossible to live up to expectations. I enjoy the film characters for what they are. I used to not be able to and it hindered my enjoyment of the films. Now that acceptance has come I can appreciate the movies.

As much as I HATE her character she did make a good Umbridge in my opinion. Oh and I just changed my layout to Christmas already haha

Personally, I dont really mind if the actors interpretation of the character is different than what I originally perceive. Yeah, I picture Umbridge as ugly and sinister in the books, but what I liked about the movie was how she wasnt that ugly, and she physically seemed pleasant and harmless; yet, within all that pink fluff, was a heart of ice. It was a big time juxtaposition, and I think it was done effectively in the film. I actually think Imelda Staunton portrayed the character better than I imagined when I was reading the book; I was expecting (from the get-go) to hate her in the book, before she could do any real harm, but in the movie, I was completely taken by surprise. Also, you guys have got to realize the talented older, British actors who are portraying these roles; theyre friggin ingenious, and each one brings a new deck of cards to the table, and its always exciting to see how they play around with their characters. Im glad Staunton was recasted, cause its always nice to see a familiar face returning to a Harry Potter film after being absent for a film or two.

I am so glad we get to see her again in DH! She is just perfect for Umbridge! Then again, its Umbridge... :( But she does an amazing job!

Many years ago, after watching a play I was hanging around the stage door to get autographs, and I told one actor that the way he had portrayed the character had been completely different than what I had pictured when reading the play. He answered, "And if you read the play again, you will see the character completely differently again."
Thats the point - the actor brings out things you hadnt seen - like when Hagrid gave Dudley the pig-tail for trying to make off with Harrys birthday cake rather than it just being random.

That was exactly SPOT ON lynn981! Same thing with Snape.. i always thought of him as sneering and just LOUD and NASTY! But Alan Rickman in the movies gives him this subtlety of those and its THE BEST PERFORMANCE of all the adult characters.. the way he says his lines SLOW (And i dont think he spoke slowly in the books) he basically made his character even better than in the books. So KUDOS for that ;)

I always read Snape that way. The subtlety is definitely in the books too. The one thing that bothered me about movie Snape is that hes not really malicious like he is in the books. When hes mean to Harry its kind of funny, but not extreme. In the books, Snape goes out of his way to try to get Harry expelled quite a few times, he hates him on principle just because hes the son of the girl he loved and his enemy. In the movies, I think they always toned down the nastiness, so Snape is never really mean. Its too obvious in the films that hes good, but in the books you couldnt tell unless you looked very closely.

kapuffy, I agree about Staunton and the character. In this lookist society, its easy to be put-off by a giant ugly toad looking woman. But Imelda is actually very pretty, which makes the sinister quality of her character even more insidious. Alan Rickman ruined the surprise (Snapes good!), because he was so amazing in the role. Everyone fell in love with him, even in his nastiness, so we were rooting for it to come-out that way. From the books alone, I did not like or trust him AT ALL. He was horrible to Harry, a traitor, and a Voldy Lover. After seeing the movies, he made it on my list of future husbands. And even though Jim Broadbent was not as grotesque as Sluggy was in the books, he was charming and fragile and I adored his interpretation of an old-school "its whom you know" sort of gent. Whoever noted that these british actors are brilliant hit it - spot on.

phoenixknighter - I read somewhere the reason Alan Rickman speaks his lines slowly has to do with a speech impediment. He got into acting to try to improve his speech, if I remember correctly. It appears to have been a luck break for those of us who consider him an outstanding actor.

wow.. i Never knew that lynn.. cuz i always wondered why he spoke as slow in other movies.. And Id just go like "Hes like Snape in all of his movies!" lol

I really didnt like Imelda as the role of Umbridge. I dont think she was toad-like enough, or short and ugly enough. She did do an ok job though, but she came of as a school girl gone evil. The all pink outifts and her appearence and such.

cant wait for her to come back. she was perfect as umbridge!
