In a new interview with BBC Radio, actor Ian Kelly, discusses his upcoming role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Kelly talks about his time on set, as well as how he found out he got the part of Hermione's father, Mr. Granger. "I love Harry Potter. You know I can't tell you much about it. They'll send 'round the men they have from Hogwarts. I play Hermione's dad and it's quite similar to what goes on in the book." Thanks to Snitch Seeker, you can listen to the Potter segment of the interview here. If you're interested in the written excerpt, you can read it here. Oooooooh Hermiones father! Is it 2010 yet? Lol

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 17:47:29

cool! i like that its staying close to the books, according to him. and that he is apparently a big fan.

I cant remember if Mr. & Mrs. Granger take care of Crookshanks when their memories are altered...? Or do the Weasleys look after him? Does anyone remember what it says in the book? Thanks :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 18:06:37

Thats a great question about Crookshanks, it is actually never mentioned what happened to him. I dont get how they are staying close to the books when they are casting aa Mr. and Mrs. Granger when they were only mentioned by Hermione. They were never seen.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 18:10:19

Wow, dont know why, but he is like I imagined... Weird...

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 18:20:39

Okay, its all well and good for him to say that they are sticking close to the books, but um...big time out here for a second while I double check with the experts...the Grangers arent in book 7 are they, except in passing mention.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 18:24:17

I think that they are doing like, flashback scenes to show how Hermione had to use the memory charms on them or whatever.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 18:43:10

lol to the geniuses saying "hes not in the book": book-to-film lesson 1: when a character relates an event to the main character, you typically dont just have them sit there saying it.

he looks like a dentist :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 19:09:29

ohhh coool!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 19:17:59

My only concern is that Hermione constantly mentions her parents through out all 7 books, and they even make an actual appearance in Book 2, but other than that they never actually appear in the other books, so why do you write them into Movie 7 as an actual character when they are again only mentioned?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 19:33:24

If they were staying that true to the books, then he would just be mentioned. I think they are just filming everything they can think of to see what works, its best to have more than enough than too little, and his scenes could still be cut from the movie.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-25 19:56:57

I have a feeling that its going to be a whole scene. They had pictures of Hermione leaving her home and walking in the street crying. They will probably film her in her room getting ready to leave and do the spell, and then she will walk into the kitchen, hug her parents with them confused why and then she does the memory charm. They will probably say, "oh hello, who are you?", and she will break down crying and rush out of the house crying. If they are going to do something similar in the movie, it would make for a really emotional scene to kids and parents. Maybe adults who still thinks this franchise to be childish will realize how serious it is.

This scene will possibly pass along as a flashback, like many of you have already said. As she talks about her methods of altering their memories, its probably going to play out before our eyes as she narrates. Personally, I think thats effective storytelling. Furthermore, it adds emphasis to the fact that Hermione is muggle-born, which is a HUGE issue in this book (you gain more sympathy for her character, and it kind of adds a sense of realism, something Yates strongly embraces). Some audience members(with a short attention span) need to see it as opposed to just hearing it coming out of her mouth. Im really hoping they utilize the same strategy with the Tale of the Three Brothers. To my knowledge, they havent casted any of the three brothers, but I think it would be very effective if the story played out as it was narrated by Hermione in Xenophilius Lovegoods home. Im telling you, have faith in the filmmakers, with two films to expand this story, Im sure they will be doing it great justice.

WeasleyTwin, I strongly agree with you. I think that scene would probably be a big wake-up call to those people thinking this series is childish, cause a teenager leaving her parents (who probably do not understand the full severity of the problem) to go on a deadly mission....is pretty serious.

I like this guy!! I think its a smart move for them to show Hermiones home life. That NEVER happens in the book. We see Harry and Ron, but we never see Hermiones house and we only get a glimpse of her parents. Her birthday is never mentioned in the books either. Only Harry and Rons. That always annoyed me because shes my favorite character, so Im very excited that they added this scene into the film and I really HOPE it makes the final cut. I cant wait to see this movie!!

Very interesting... I know in Episode 175: Fireside Chats of MuggleCast, the hosts discussed that Mrs. Granger had been cast. I think its very interesting that they will be putting in Hermiones parents. I am curious to see what they will do with it.

FACT: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2 will be the First movies to be BETTER than the Book...Period

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-26 01:30:30

@phoenixknighter: Whoa now! I dont think its possible to be better than brilliance and Perfection. DH part one and two will be amazing and will be perfect adaptations of the book, but they wont better. Even with two films...theyre still going to have to cut some stuff and people will not be happy, but I think its safe to say that the DH films will be the BEST out of all the Potter films and thats a pretty big accomplishment.

Yet another addition that Yates thinks is needed. There is no reason for the Grangers to be seen. We havent seen them since Chamber. And they dont need to be here. I just adore how Yates and his crew pick out a sentance or two from a book make it bigger than it is in the book. And then in turn leave out lots of important things. Deathly Hallows will be no different than the massacre he did to Half Blood Prince.

Anyone else have any idea what happened to Crookshanks if Mr. & Mrs. Granger did not take care of him?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-26 08:18:31

hidenchan, you are just really pathetic. They said the movie is going to be really close to the books and that they are gonna keep everything in if it possible but of course some things will be cut like potterwatch. Unless they make that work it will just mess up the flow of the movie, in my opinion. So dont start giving negative opinions without even seeing anything from Deathly Hallows.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-26 09:12:27

Hidechan, I can understand where youre coming from, but HBP, in my opinion, needed that extra scene at the burrow to add intensity to the story. The filmmakers were aware that, although the film was dark, they needed to add an extra push to remind audiences about the true severity of the dangers within the wizarding world. Personally, I think the decision to actually show the Grangers is a big deal, and is a good filmmaking strategy; it gets the audience involved, and it would add visuals to an already heavily dialogue-driven story. Theres a lot thats going down in this movie, and the Granger scene (or flashback) will probably provide a breather. This somewhat reminds me of a scene in Titanic where one of the engineers (at the beginning of the film) is describing how the Titanic sank, but with a computer-animated rendering of the ship. We, the audience, get a visual for what truly happened on the Titanic, since it does add a visual for audiences with a short attention span. The same is apparent with this scene in DH, since sometimes saying it is not as effective as actually seeing it play out. Thats just what I personally think.

This is cool.

Well, I guess hes good but he doesnt really look like a dentist to me. I think DH movies will be good but not as good as the book. Cant beat perfection.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-11-27 20:25:34

Gryffindor_Seeker_7, I dont know, we might have to wait and see. With the split for the last movie, I have high hopes the filmmakers will tell a very good story, even if it doesnt match its literary counterpart. In my opinion, POA was that kind of movie; it stood apart as somewhat differenet than the book (maybe not better though) and was rendered effective, with ideas so highly thought up, I wondered if J.K. Rowling herself originally imagined them any better. Thats what Im hoping happens here in DH: that the filmmakers will go above and beyond Rowlings vision and create a film that is truly enchanting. I can already tell they are just by observing the Shell Cottage set; its more intricate and beautifully designed than I think J.K. Rowling descrbed it in the book (it was an actual white cottage in the book with fragments of shells plastered in the walls). In the movie, however, the shells dominate the architecture of the place, giving it a true sense of magic.
