Radcliffe to star in new ITV drama
Daniel Radcliffe recently announced that he will commence filming for a new ITV drama, My Boy Jack, in summer 2007. The show is based on a true story of Rudyard Kipling and his son Jack, who was killed in World War I. Dan had this to say about the new project:

For many people my age, the first world war is just a topic in a history book. But, I've always been fascinated by the subject and think it's as relevant today as it ever was with young men all over the world still sacrificing their lives in the name of war... I am extremely proud to be part of the production of My Boy Jack and only hope I can do justice to the memory of the men who fought and those who died.

In other Dan-related news, a pre-recorded video of the actor and David Haig, writer and star of My Boy Jack, was shown recently at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Photos from the event can be seen here, as well as a transcript of the video's message at the "Read more" link below.

Thanks to Jenna from DR.com for the info!

DANIEL RADCLIFFE SCRIPT

I'm Dan Radcliffe, and I'd like to tell you about a film I am making next year for ITV1.

In World War I, millions of young men were killed fighting for their country - many were only 17 years old.

It's a period I am particularly fascinated by, which is why I was thrilled to be asked by Ecosse Films to play the title role in a major new drama called My Boy Jack.

The film is about Rudyard Kipling and his son. Kipling was one of several high profile figures who took an active role in persuading young men to fight in World War I. His own son Jack, however, had such poor eyesight that the army refused to accept him. Indeed, it was only through Kipling's personal intervention that Jack eventually gained a commission with the Irish guards.

Written by and starring David Haig as Kipling, My Boy Jack is a moving and powerful story NOT ONLY of duty, sacrifice and bravery, but also the horror of war.

Today nearly a hundred years on YOUNG MEN ARE STILL GOING OFF TO FIGHT IN WAR. MANY WILL NEVER RETURN.

In My Boy Jack next year, we will remember them.

Posted by Legasy Aug 27th 2006

Good for him. I'm not in to that kind of stuff much, but it's brilliant that he is doing something like this.

Posted by britishwannabe Aug 27th 2006

Posted by GeorgeusGirl Aug 27th 2006

Yeah...is this a movie or TV show? And, is it in the USA? Gosh, I really, really, hope so! I will be soo sad if it's not in the USA because I love Dan's work and will be dissapointed if Americans or any other country besides Britain couln't see it & I know that would make Dan fans livid! (AND ME TOO!)

Posted by nearly_headless_nick Aug 27th 2006

I think this is great! congrats Dan! what a great role! I love movies about the two WW. -----UniqueLittleFishy, they usually sell these movies to other tv channels in the world, so I'm sure you will be able to see it! :)

Posted by KitScott Aug 27th 2006

Go Go Dan! he's doing a lotta new stuff lately. that's awesome and he'll only learn more and more from it, I love the passion he has in describing every caracter he plays. he's a very very very cool guy. can't wait to take a look at how that'll be! =D

Posted by TiaBlue Aug 27th 2006

Young men and women all over the world still sacrifice their lives for freedom and to protect loved ones, not for war.

Posted by gympiggy004 Aug 27th 2006

gosh...like he needs another t.v. role! But if he has to get another one, i'm glad its a worthwile one.

Posted by Mrs_Finnegan Aug 27th 2006

wow Dan's doing a lot of stuff lately!! well, I guess he doesn't want to be known as harry potter for the rest of his life...

Posted by Gotpotter269 Aug 27th 2006

good 4 dan!!!!!!!!! i luv him!!!!!!!!

Posted by House_of_Black Aug 27th 2006

BTW, the Kipling story is REALLY tragic, we read about it my history class, prepare to cry.

Posted by Chrisell Aug 27th 2006

I know people wonder why Emma hasn't done anything but she's a very bright girl (as is seen by her outstanding grades) and I'm sure she's just being very careful to not choose any stupid projects. What's the rush? She's pretty and smart and wants to go to University so she can start her acting career outside of Potter later. I'm sure she'll still be successful especially since she'll get more practice in acting under her belt.

Posted by smurff Aug 27th 2006

Woah dan's going to be quite busy for awhile, eh?

Posted by Batmanda Aug 27th 2006

Dan in a army unifrom with helmet and a gun... Hot..

Posted by TinaL Aug 27th 2006

so he is going to die...ah that is sad! and how in the world he is going to find time to so MANY projects!! and WOW DAN IS ON DEMAND!!

Posted by GorgeousGinnyxoxoxox Aug 27th 2006

Sounds like a good movie, it'll be strange to see him in it though, just cause i'm so used to seeing him as Harry Potter!!!!! I bet he'll play the part really good!!!!!!!!

Posted by iwishiwashermione Aug 27th 2006

it's nice that he's acting in other projects. I hope that it'll be available here in the US.

Posted by nearly_headless_nick Aug 27th 2006

TiaBlue, he didn't say "for war", he said "sacrificing their lives in the name of war", it's different, please don't distort his words. He is saying it: "do justice to the memory of the men who fought and those who died."

Posted by nearly_headless_nick Aug 27th 2006

I've heard about the story of Rudyard Kipling and his son before, I'm glad they are going to do a movie about it, it's a very tragic story, and everyone should know about it. I have heard very good things about David Haig too, so I'm happy Dan will work with him. Congratulations Dan, this is a great movie!

Posted by Chrisell Aug 27th 2006

David Yates just won an Emmy!! Isn't that great!?

Posted by Nameless Aug 27th 2006

What about the women?

Posted by nearly_headless_nick Aug 27th 2006

Nameless, I don't think there were many women fighting in WWI, maybe you have not studied history, anyway, maybe you have not study English either, because when a person says "men", they can be including men and women. But obviously, you are just trying to find a flaw in his words, don't you have anything better to do? ;)

Posted by canarycream7 Aug 27th 2006

awesome! can't wait til next summer!

Posted by crayzhpfan Aug 27th 2006

Posted by Dobby Aug 27th 2006

That's cool. He'll have a lot of stuff to do, eh? Well, good luck Dan! :)
