Radcliffe to star in new ITV drama
Daniel Radcliffe recently announced that he will commence filming for a new ITV drama, My Boy Jack, in summer 2007. The show is based on a true story of Rudyard Kipling and his son Jack, who was killed in World War I. Dan had this to say about the new project:

For many people my age, the first world war is just a topic in a history book. But, I've always been fascinated by the subject and think it's as relevant today as it ever was with young men all over the world still sacrificing their lives in the name of war... I am extremely proud to be part of the production of My Boy Jack and only hope I can do justice to the memory of the men who fought and those who died.

In other Dan-related news, a pre-recorded video of the actor and David Haig, writer and star of My Boy Jack, was shown recently at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Photos from the event can be seen here, as well as a transcript of the video's message at the "Read more" link below.

Thanks to Jenna from DR.com for the info!

DANIEL RADCLIFFE SCRIPT

I'm Dan Radcliffe, and I'd like to tell you about a film I am making next year for ITV1.

In World War I, millions of young men were killed fighting for their country - many were only 17 years old.

It's a period I am particularly fascinated by, which is why I was thrilled to be asked by Ecosse Films to play the title role in a major new drama called My Boy Jack.

The film is about Rudyard Kipling and his son. Kipling was one of several high profile figures who took an active role in persuading young men to fight in World War I. His own son Jack, however, had such poor eyesight that the army refused to accept him. Indeed, it was only through Kipling's personal intervention that Jack eventually gained a commission with the Irish guards.

Written by and starring David Haig as Kipling, My Boy Jack is a moving and powerful story NOT ONLY of duty, sacrifice and bravery, but also the horror of war.

Today nearly a hundred years on YOUNG MEN ARE STILL GOING OFF TO FIGHT IN WAR. MANY WILL NEVER RETURN.

In My Boy Jack next year, we will remember them.

I am going to cry when his character dies!! Dan sure is wanted by a lot of people, he will have a great future after HP!

Posted by arabesque Aug 28th 2006

This is such great news! I'm glad he's expanding his career outside of HP. I just hope he doesn't tire himself out from all these new projects he's taking on!

Posted by longbottom Aug 28th 2006

dans gone mad doing all these things one after the other but then again better for him and his career.. well depending on his performance.. but i would love to see more of rupert and emma although im happy with driving lessons and cant wait til its release in the US

Posted by Belsito Aug 28th 2006

Glad to hear it. So much for all those who used to post that Daniel will be the only one not to make it beyond HP. Remember all those "Daniel will never get another role outside of Harry Potter sort of comments? Not that I've got anything against Emma but most predicted that she would be the only one to take up a career in acting after HP and hey - what do you know? - she's the only one who has no other projects in the pipeline! I'm not saying this to belittle her, far from it. I'm sure she's been approached but perhaps she has other things on mind at the moment or she hasn't been offered anything she wants to really get into. They're lucky enough to have the luxury of choosing what roles to take up and which to discard - most their age would have to grab at anything they're offered if they want to take up acting as a career.

Posted by pigwidgeon Aug 28th 2006

I would have said that it's good to see that dan and rupert are doing other things, but i think that they've already been typecast and theres nothing they can do about it any more. i think people will always think of them as harry and ron, and it will be weird to see them in other things. i personally think they should get the hp films done first because then they wouldnt have to worry about becoming too old for them. i wish they filmed continuously like they did for the masterpiece that is lord of the rings. :)

Posted by Belsito Aug 28th 2006

The actors have absolutely no say when the films come out so their following of other projects would have no bearing on when the films come out. I wouldn't think it at all weird to see them in something different. It happened to me with John Travolta - I was reluctant to see his recent films because I thought that I would be expecting him to break into a dance at any moment (I'm not much of a "Grease" fan) but ten minutes into "Face-Off" that feeling completely left me and enjoyed seeing him in his new (and much improved) role.

It's great news! :) I am sure Dan knows his limits too. He will do Eccqus from about February to May or June, My boy Jack in the summer, probably in late June and July and I read some rumours today that they will begin filming HBP in August. All this means that he can focus on one project at a time. Between the projects he will certainly have some free time to go on vacation if he likes. Besides, he doesn't have to bother about studying until he starts with HBP. And when he has rehearsed Eccqus there will most likely be the shows in the evening, so he can relax during the days. I am not concerned about whether he takes on too many projects. I am sure his parents will say no if they notice that he gets stressed out. Anyway, I loved what he said on the recorded message about remembering the young people who died in the wars etc. It was very emotional. I wish someone could have taped it so we could see him as well. The pictures are great too. He is very very good looking. A little too much hair on his arms though... But I love when he wears a suit over the t-shirt. By the way, Jack (or John, as his real name was) had bad eye sight, so we can probably look forward to seeing Dan with some glasses again! :)

ITV are on a roll right now - getting Rupert and Dan.

Posted by shilpa Aug 28th 2006

ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy and proud of dan. GO DAN YOU ROCK! whatever project he signs he really works rather hard to live upto his character . keep up the good work. I HEART U DAN. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and why hasn't emma been in any project . hasn't she been approached or what??????????? and dont get me wrong but my cousin is an actor(india) and he's 17 and when he sits his exams the ouestion papers will already have been revealed to him. its the same allover. the actors working in a really famous project dont exactly have to prepare for their exams . emma took a temporary leave from the filming(ootp) to prepare for her exams when they were less than a month ahead. and she took more than 12 exams. she certainly would not have had time during filming . i mean common its not that easy to scrape a's in allexams with less than a month preparation

OOOH! I'm sooo excited! Next year is just gonna be the best year ever!

Posted by Whisper Aug 28th 2006

Congratulations to Dan, although I will be very disappointed if this means that he has to pass on Harry. Still this is important, and it's brilliant news that he is doing other work. I do hope that HP_fan81 is right.

Posted by TiaBlue Aug 28th 2006

You are absolutely right, Nearly Headless Nick. I should have said that young men and women all over the world still sacrifice their lives for freedom and to protect loved ones, not in the name of war. Thanks for the correction. :)

Posted by nearly_headless_nick Aug 28th 2006

No TinaBlue, it's not that what I mean, maybe English is not your first language? because what Dan is saying is really emotional and true, and I think you are misunderstanding him. ;)

Posted by Wassan Aug 28th 2006

Wow, Daniel looked sooooo manly in those photos!!!!! I have to be honest though, I'm not "fascinated" by World War I but, yes it is rather interesting and, I'm really proud of him however, Daniel Radcliffe staring in a war movie could only mean one thing..... DANNY IN AN ARMY SUIT!!!!! Wow, thats gotta be amazing, I could picture him now, wearing a helmet, carrying a gun, sweating like crazy..... hmmhmm, ok sorry, I think I crossed the line there. GO DANNY!!!!!

Posted by quidditchplayer Aug 28th 2006

Tina, sorry but it looks like you are trying to disort Dan's words. He is not talking about the reasons of a war, or the reasons they die, he is just saying that many brave young men die in wars, and they deserve to be remembered, and that's what this movie is about. Notice that his words don't contradict your words. :)

Posted by jesi Aug 28th 2006

Sorry, but where are the comments that says being involved with ITV is "bad". I thought a lot of people said that about Rupert being involved in ITV -- because its a station that stinks. How come people are singing a different tune now?

Posted by Kaammini Aug 28th 2006

Interesting! What's weird is on ITV the other day there was an add showing that Driving Lessons was coming soon...to the channel. Slightly confusing considering that it doesn't seem to have come out in cinemas.

Posted by Head_Girl_of_Hogwarts Aug 28th 2006

He's not the best writer ("I'm Dan Radcliffe" beginning it off - !) but still he's a great actor. Congrats and good luck, Dan, from all us Irish!

Posted by quidditchplayer Aug 28th 2006

jesi, maybe it's because we have more info about this proyect and obviously it doesn't stink. And it's an Ecosse Film Production, not a ITV production. Anyway, you shouldn't generalize, just because you read what some bashers said, it doesn't mean all people thought like that, so they have not a differente tune now. Maybe it's just that bashers can not bash now, because we have full information, and all sounds great. But it looks like you would like people to bash Dan, I hope I'm wrong. :) We have enough bashers here, of all the actors and actresses.

Posted by nearly_headless_nick Aug 28th 2006

Head_Girl_of_Hogwarts, that was part of a prerecorded video he did to present the proyect in the festival, that why he is presenting himself. ;) I wonder if someone taped the video!

Posted by Carol61 Aug 28th 2006

The two photos of Dan alone that go with this article have to be the most gorgeous Dan shots I've seen!!! That aside, can someone educate the US fans (like me) who have no clue what ITV is? Is it merely a particular TV station in Britian? I think it's great Dan is taking on a project like this, hot on the heels of doing Equus, because it will certainly show his diversity as an actor for projects like these to be sandwiched in between the various Harry Potter films. As long as none of the new projects prevent him from doing all 7 Potter films, I say WAY TO GO, DAN!!!

Posted by jesi Aug 28th 2006

Kaammini, the theatrical release of "Driving Lessons" in the UK is this Sept. 8, while the US theatrical release is this Oct. 13. Australia and Thailand will be getting it this December while Brazil, Peru and most of Central and South America will get it by January 2007. quidditchplayer, I never agreed with bashing, I just wanted people to note the double-standard. Its not Rupert's nor his fans' fault that BBC News erroneously announced -- twice at that -- in news releases at first that Rupert is supposed to be "signed up" to do a "project" in ITV. If its just the Driving Lessons TV release, it cant be called a "project" and it wont need Rupert to "sign up" for anything because its the studio that sells the rights and Rupert has nothing to do with. We feel bad and a bit duped by BBC and ITV for such lack of professionalism -- they should know what they're talking about when they make a press announcement.

Posted by tabitoo Aug 28th 2006

Wow!! Dan's one busy young man. :)

Posted by fi_the_fairynymph Aug 28th 2006

Well said Dan. The more interviews I read from him the more I think that he really is extraordinary... being a superstar and giving so much thought to matters like this... He's well cool.

Posted by lilyp Aug 28th 2006

Go, Dan. You are really having a career, aren't you? Jesi, where have you got the information about Driving Lessons' release in Brazil? I received a message of Paris Filmes, the distributos]r that they think it will be in March. I see many people ask about Emma, but you might remember that unitl 16, there are many limitations to the actors and actresses work. She is the youngest of the trio and has just made her GCSEs. Dan and Rupert began to really have important other projects after their GCSEs. Things will probably change for her now. though she seems more interested in the Universitiy than both the boys (Rupert has already left school and Dan is not going to school this next year).

Posted by quidditchplayer Aug 28th 2006

lilyp, Dan is not going next year because anyway he would have had to take a year off soon or later, because he can not go to university before he finishes the HP movies, it would be impossible with his schedule. So even if he does his finals exams next year, he would have to take a year or two off before going to university. So I think it's very intelligent he is taking the year off now, when he can do great proyects. And that doesn't mean he doesn't care about his studies. He has said he wants to end school, and maybe then he will go to university. Although it's very difficult if he wants to continue acting. Natalie Portman was able to do it because she just had to film Starts Wars in the summers, for example.----- jesi, I'm sorry that they were bad informed, but that's not our fault (I didn't even commented when that news was posted), I don't think there is a double-standard in this post, I think people can have a different opinion when they are well informed. Although I think those people were bashers, and they are not writing here because they don't have anything to bash now. There is not a double-standard because all the actors have bashers, it's not like there is one who is never bashed in an unfair way. For example, when people don't like something about Ron portrayal, they blame the scriptwriter or director, but if they don't like something in Harry they blame Dan, isn't that a double-standard too then? I think they are just bashers, and they criticize everything.

Posted by MaryEmmaGinny Aug 28th 2006

Well...it seems to be a really interesting role for dan and a interesting movie!!! but he makes so much other movies now, when he starts in summer 2007, when will be the time he starts filming the 6th harry potter??? but it´s good he´s playing other roles between...he´ll never get the harry-image away! he´ll always be the harry potter actor and no one else!!!!

Posted by xoxDreamerGirlxox Aug 28th 2006

Wow, that's awesome for him! Dan makes pretty smart decisions when it comes to which roles he takes on. Unfortunately, I doubt ITV shows in Canada :(

Posted by DecemberDrops Aug 28th 2006

I have never watched ITV because I live in the US. What's it like?

Posted by UniqueLittleFishy Aug 28th 2006

Whoo! Then I hope a tv station over here shows the movie!!! and WHAT pictures are everyone talking about?

Posted by TheWordsUnspoken Aug 28th 2006

i dont care what he does as long as he doesnt quit HP on us. i mean, it really would not be harry potter without rupert grint emma watson dan radcliffe and matt lewis. :D but i might watch this new thing. it sounds pretty cool.

Posted by TinaL Aug 28th 2006

UniqueLittleFishy, gokto dr.com or dr.uk they have new pictures of Dan and he looks HOT!

Posted by dans_owl Aug 28th 2006

i completely agree with dan abt the ppl who fought for their country n died bcuz itz our soldiers b'cuz of whom we sleep at night. n i salute to those who sacrificed to us..........n best of luck fo ur next project dan........u really work a lot..........

Posted by rhea Aug 28th 2006

i wonder if he'll have time for everything else now that he's so busy...

Posted by Nameless Aug 28th 2006

***Earlier I didn't mean the women in WWI, I meant the women in this war. I did study history, by the way.

Posted by MmaRamotswe Aug 28th 2006

Wow, seems like all u guys got dan radcliffe's schedule all worked out pretty well for him. I hope he's grateful! Nobody else thinks he is a rubbish actor however hard he tries, then?

Posted by harryisahunk Aug 28th 2006

goody... i love that man!!!! he is a hunk!!!!

Posted by nearly_headless_nick Aug 28th 2006

If you judge something before seeing it, then your opinion is the only real rubbish. And if you don't think people can learn and improve, then you are ignorant. In my opinion Dan is very good, and he becomes even better with each new proyect he does, and the new experience it gives to him. But maybe you are so arrogant to think you know more that all the professionals who work in movie and theatrical industry and think Dan can do great roles like this one. --- Nameless, sorry if I was too harsh before, but I'm sure you understand that when a person say -men-, they can be including women too, it's just the way language works, I was just surprised you didn't realize about that. ;)

Posted by flipgirl Aug 28th 2006

Good for him. For sure I wouldn't volunteer to be a movie about war. Espcially if it's a true story. I'll probably watch it anyway cuz I heart Dan.

Posted by tonks_394 Aug 28th 2006

Thats tha Dan we know and love!Good luck Dan!

Posted by cheep_wand Aug 28th 2006

DUDES, IS HE GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO THE SIXTH MOVIE WHILE DOING THIS?? he can't not be in the sixth movie. him and tom felton. no. they freakin' havta be in dem! So this isn't going to run into HBP filming time is it?

Posted by jasmine Aug 28th 2006

Uhm, Dan seems to be accepting projects left and right. I'm still trying to decide whether not I'll be happy with this TV drama. At least it's not a regular TV show. He seems to only accept small projects, those that won't take too much time shooting. I guess his first priority is still the Harry Potter franchise. But I love men in uniform so I guess I'll be happy about this project.

Posted by MmaRamotswe Aug 29th 2006

Hey I'm entitled to my opinion same as anyone else. Just coz it;s not the same as yours doesn't make it wrong. The fact that Radcliffe's acting just makes me want to cringe or giggle or scream at him to try to be even vaguely like one of the greatest fictional characters of recent years who, by the way, he is supposed to be portraying and is getting a lot of money so to do, doesn't make me a bad person.

Posted by Dancer_1021 Aug 29th 2006

cool! cant wait to see the movie!

Posted by GrownUpChick Aug 29th 2006

Now, here is something I can agree with! This movie role sounds like a pretty good part. Good for Dan for taking it but I must add my concerns along with the rest of you who are wondering about HBP. I guess right now there is no word on Dan or anyone else even being made offers for the sixth movie and that bothers me. I won't be happy until we have confirmation that Dan, Rupert, Emma, and all the other "regulars" are signed on the dotted line for the next movie. Someone mentioned Dan and school. If you remember on one of the special features on the GOF DVD, Dan did mention that he never really felt all that comfortable at school and that he feels much more comfortable on a movie set. Acting is obviously what he wants to do with his life so I wouldn't be surprised if he never went back to school. As for Emma and why she hasn't done any other projects...she said she doesn't want to accept something just to do something different. She is apparently being very picky about other projects and she will probably end up going to university anyway. I think she will need to think long and hard about that. Not every young actress can be a Jodie Foster who has a successful career as a child star, goes to Yale Drama School , and then becomes a successful adult actor. I hope she can do it, though, if that's what she really wants.

Posted by nearly_headless_nick Aug 29th 2006

MmaRamotswe, I didn't say you are a bad person, and I didn't say you can't have an opinion. I just expressed my own point of view. But you can not expect people to be respectful with you when you are not being respectful with other people. I think people in the movie industry know more about acting than all of us together, so he wouldn't have played this great character in 5 movies if he wasn't a good actor. I think he is the only one of the young cast who plays his character faithful to the books, and that deserves all my respect. He puts his soul and effort in these movies. Others of the younger actors haven't even read the books. Dan even talked with a psychologist to understand better how Harry feels after seeing Cedric death. He obviously cares about Harry, and that doesn't deserve people being disrespectful with him. I cringe everytime I see Rupert putting strange faces who makes Ron look like a silly character, or Emma overacting, but I respect them, I can not imagine other actors playing the trio, and I wouldn't insult them or call them "rubbish". I don't think what they do is easy, especially Dan who has to do all those stunts, I really admire him for doing all his stunts, which are really difficult, and because I think he is a great representative for HP in all the world. The same with all the others, all of them are good kids (teens now).

Posted by skates Aug 29th 2006

I love you Dan !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by TinaL Aug 29th 2006

nearly_headless_nick, well said it...I some people here in somewhere else believe that they are directors and producers, but that is alright, the real director and producers love to work with Dan, the kid is on a roll, he hasn't even started promoting December Boys and he already has 2 more projects that are none-HP related "Equus" and now "My Boy Jack." These people won't spend tons of money on Dan is they didn't believe in his potential as an actor, I am glad to say that Daniel won't suffer the child star syndrome, he will have a great future as an actor after HP is over.

Posted by jasmine Aug 29th 2006

hey, MmaRamotswe, if your only objection to Dan's acting is that he didn't fulfill your expectations of what Harry should be then get a grip. The only person who has the Right to say that is the creator of Harry himself. And JKR has already said that Dan has filled those shoes quite nicely. For that matter, why blame Dan for not being your Harry? It's more a matter of how a script is written than the actor's interpretation of it that counts. Rupert's portrayal of Ron leaves so much to be desired but do I hear you complaining about that? Of course you are enttiled to your opinion but don't freak out if somebody questions those opinions. I think Dan is just improving year after year in his acting and these various projects lined up for him will just make him a better actor. maybe someday he will at last reach your very high standards of how Harry Potter should be played.

Posted by TiaBlue Aug 29th 2006

To MmaRamotswe - I respectfully disagree with your opinion of Dan Radcliffe's acting. Actually, I think he's pretty good and that he get's better as the series progresses. However, you have every right to your own opinion. Sadly, the reason I very rarely post opinion on Mugglenet is because of the few people who verbally attack those who don't think like they do. I suppose I'll try posting again in a five or six months to see if anything has changed. Have a great day!
