In the first editions of Half-Blood Prince, an error discovered in "An Excess of Phlegm" stated that Hermione received one Exceeds Expectations and ten Outstanding grades in her OWLs. However, she only took ten subjects. Our Potter Encyclopedia had staggered a guess that she took the "Muggle Studies exam and passed it with top marks despite dropping the subject at the end of her third year."
Now, HarryLatino.com reports that this was indeed a genuine error and has been rectified in recent editions of Book 6; it now reads she earned nine Os and one EE. Phew!

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 17:04:49
Im a little confused then. Was the genuine error that she only received nine outstandings and one Exceeds Expectations? Or was the error that she indeed received ten Outstandings and one Exceeds Expectations which includes earning an OWL in Muggle Studies?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 17:05:23

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 17:22:34
i hate it when they correct mistakes after book comes out.. its just kinda weird... if its sumthin minor like a number... or "wand" being on harrys school list twice.. than i guess it doesnt really matter... but like in the 4th one the order that harrys parents come out in.... i think it should just be left they way it was written... even if it was a mistake

Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 17:35:10

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 17:45:59
AH! Im so proud. I DID notice that. Lol. I might not be good with plot stuff, but Im good with tiny facts
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 17:52:02
Well they should give Hermione another O for just being the best charactor in Harry Potter :D. I will give you one of my Os Hermione, Thatnks for being my favorite charactor :D
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 17:56:28
Yeah, I agree with gummybearlily. Hermione should get another O - shes awesome.
But now, see, I feel stupid. I didnt even notice. I just went, "Cool, 10 Os...." I LOVE the HP books - OBVIOUSLY - but I never notice stuff like that. Thats why I love MuggleNet. ;)

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 18:26:33
i like having the un-fixed version. i feel like its special, like different. it shows that behind Jo and her brilliant mind, and all the editors and publishers, there are still real people behind the wonderful creation of Harry Potter, that we all know and love. :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 18:31:13
My friend sent this in to Mugglenet, but they said that it wasnt a mistake and we could never exactly be sure of Hermione, but it is obviously a mistake. Im glad it was fixed, but I agree with amandarose.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 18:36:52

I never really noticed that...actually I didnt know how many classes hermoine took, I pay more attention to the bigger parts of the book...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 18:57:41
As someone said earlier, I HAVE wondered why Hermione didnt go for 12 OWLs. Thats kid of like saying NO girl ever has, since everyone says "shes the brightest witch of her age theyve ever seen." Ive also wondered how the others did it without time turners, or if they did use them. Anyways, do you all know what page thats on? Id like to see which edition I have.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 18:59:17
i didnt notice, ill have to look it up. me mum got HBP for me the day it came out in hardback, so the mistake should be in there ^_^. now as for me not noticing.... i have an excuse! i probably didnt notice because i started with the 5th book and didnt know what was going on. i know, lame excuse.... but its all i got :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 19:03:45
Now they should fix the "Malfoy looked like Hermione had PUNCHED him" line.
Ive found lots of spelling errors and such, recently, like in the third one.
I dont know why I was shocked to find errors, they happen, but its Harry Potter! haha
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 19:04:10
Wow, I never even noticed. Hehe! O well, nice 2 know that its been fixed!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 19:07:40
That takes a load of my mind... not. Although I think I did wonder about that when I was reading-- But its such a trivial matter that it doesnt really matter.

Wow, who sits around and takes the time to think "Wait, Hermione dropped Muggle Studies at the end of her third year! We must fix this error at once for the sake of our future generations, for they might be confused out of their minds!"
I mean seriously, does someone not have a life?
Anyway...
About the "be glad you have an early copy" thing...I need a new copy...because mine the first 100 or so pages fell out because I let my friend borrow my book (stupid mistake) and my sister was mad at me and decided to run around with my book as I chased her and she threw it. Bye-bye, HBP *tear* But now, my new copy will just be screwed up! Well...actually it will be fixed...but whatever.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 19:32:21
I had never noticed that lol.I just went back in my book and saw that it has the error and now I notice
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 19:44:14
so hermione is not perfect. it is the enf of a myth lol. the fact that hermione quit one subject and hasnt got best marks in one subject make sure shes not perfect, and for the next book, that fill me with happiness.
all of the perfect people in the books have turn nasty or dead.
spoiler:
i recognise 4 generations in the books, the generation of dumbledore, the one of voldemort, the one of the potter, evans, rogue, black, pettigrew and lupin and the last one, the generation of the potters son, harry.
dumbledore was killed
voldemort become a dark mage
the potter (and one of the evans then) die
black die
pettigrew and rogue are death eater
and lupin is a werewolf
in the last generation, malfoy is a bad guy.
who will be the next to turn dead or for the wrong side, well wait till book seven to know.
if hermione, althought she quit a subject and missed another, stay the best witch of her generation, i rather see her become like dumbledore than like voldemort or die.

...I wonder how many people on this web site do not, or have not in the past (that really sucks kaleygurl) owned an original copy of HBP. How many of us have lined up for the release of the book, or at least, got it the day it came out? How many of us counted down the days, hours, minuets, seconds, you hold, feel, touch, hug, and of course, read the contents of that book? Im sure that most of us really DO own a messed up version, and hold it high in teh air for the rest of the world to see, love, adore, and then basically make fun of you for being such a Harry Potter dork. =D Congradulations guys, we do an outstanding job!

..................just kidding:) never noticed that before...but thats pretty cool for someone who did.
|

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 21:12:48
Kaleygurl:
My first copy of HBP is in thirds ... but it will always be very special to me!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 21:22:55
great i got the wrong one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! gosh.......... why is it always me????
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 21:33:33
Gee - I suppose I have no life! Over on LJ, wed already made theories on why Hermione had one extra! I have two copies of the "mistake" HBP, since a friend got me one a week after it came out, not knowing Id gone to a midnight party on release date! ^_^
Like the wand mistake, I find things like these really annoying - it makes us waste so much time on theory-mongering on editor errors! Heres to the idea of having fans proof-read the books for things like these! (I know I wouldnt quit THAT job! ;)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 21:44:26
i didnt notice that when i read it..

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-28 22:50:36
I have the one with the mistake, and I noticed it, so did my mom when she read it, but I ignored it. I also have the OOTP where the wand order is messed up. Sigh, oh well, I know what the facts are, even if the book doesnt say it.

|

I knew it! I even wrote on a forum that it was JKs math gone askew again.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-29 00:00:41
I just figured she got her hands on the time turner again and took an extra exam.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-29 03:08:37
Also noticed it... and I still think Hermione ought to have gotten an O in DADA too - Harry might be better than her, but theres no reason she couldnt have gotten a lesser O! And on a related note: Percy must have used a time-turner to get his twelve OWLs.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-29 03:15:00
Yeah, I wondered that about Percy and the 12 OWLs too...I also think Hermione shouldve gotten an O in DADA - JKR probably wanted to emphasise that Harry was better, but Im sure we could all just agree on that without giving Hermione a lower GRADE...like, Dumbledore wouldve gotten Os on his NEWTs, but so did Dawlish and we still know whos better (OK extreme example, but still)...and you know in OOTP how Hermione says that Harry did better in the 3rd yr DADA exam? Thats only cos shed never fought a Boggart before, and Harry had had heaps of practice!!! If shed had a chance in class like almost everyone else did, shed have gotten full marks! *Rants*
|

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-29 07:57:44
It did seem like more to me when I read it, but I was too lazy to count all her classes. Cool, its always fun to have the book with the mistake in it. I have the GoF with the mixed up death order thing w/lily and james
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-29 08:38:43

|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-29 16:29:10
In response to MrsRoonilWazlib
She indeed started for the 12, but had to drop Mugglestudies, and felt Trelawney was a fraud. It makes me wonder though, how did the others do it without a timeturner? And for that matter, how is it in book one Hagrid said both Harrys mom and dad were Head Boy and Girl in their time, and yet in book 5 we learn that Harrys dad was never prefect, and that prefect is the first step. Can Quidditch captain be a precursor for Head Boy, because in book six Hermione tells Harry that being captain gives him equal status with prefects, that he can use their special bathroom and everything.????
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-29 16:34:58
It is not just on her report either, Ron tells her "...when youve got your eleven Outstanding OWLS..."on page 100 of the early American releases
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-29 20:07:17
I never knew that mistake existed until...oh 2 minutes ago? I am such a dedicated fan!!!!!! ^_^

SO WHAT I HAVE BOOK SIX WITH THE MISTAKE.
IT TELLS THAT SOMETIME PEOPLE MAKE MISTAKE WHEN THEY WRITE A BOOKS OR ANY OTHER THING AND DONT READ THOW IT TO SEE IT THEY WOULD TO TAKE SOME OUT OR PUT SOME IN THE STORY OR LETTERS.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-08-31 10:46:08
haha now i am gonna go read HBP againn!! to see that, but i got mine at midnight, so its one of the early ones! haha! funny how it took them more than a year!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-09-01 09:49:44
So, Im a little bit confused...I thought JKR did that on purpose:
Well Hermione got every subject that Harry and Ron had but Divination. Without Divination that makes 8 subjects. But instead of that she got Ancient Runes, Arithmancy and Numerology, doesnt that make a total number of 11 subjects???
Please help me out of that dilemma...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2006-09-03 09:02:12
Why fuss about that one, when there are thousands more/ One simple example; in HP5, Sirius yells "take Neville and run!" How does he know Nevilles name?
