AOL Moviefone has released a list detailing what they believe are the best films of the decade, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban takes 10th place:
During his third year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) learns that Lord Voldemort's acolyte Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped Azkaban prison with an eye toward making Harry's "Boy That Lived" moniker an overstatement. No worries, Harry's friends Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermoine Granger (Emma Watson) are on hand to help him sort out the shifting allegiances -- and shapes! -- in a tale where nothing is as it seems. Darker than the first two Potter films, to legions of fans the third installment of J.K. Rowlings' juggernaut may or may not be the best of the bunch; but, really, what Muggle wouldn't enjoy this.
Do you agree that out of all the Potter films, this is the best one? Personally, I'd put Order of the Phoenix or Half-Blood Prince on this list instead. Thanks to Rory for the tip!

OOTP SUCKS! I love Goblet of Fire and Half-Blood Prince.

I think PoA and HBP were the best visually. I love HBP the more though :) Its definitely my favorite. (DH will be the best one/ones!)

Prisoner of Azkaban is still my favorite of the HP movies... and of the books too. I agree... everytime its on tv I watch it and never get bored of it. Its a great movie!!

i just rewatched Half Blood Prince, it is definitely better
|

No!! POA was my least favorite and the film I was most disappointed in. I would have put half blood prince or goblet of fire there instead.

i loved GOF and HBP! the more weasley twins the better the movie is ;]

Love POA, one of my top 10 movies. TO me it FEELS like how a potter movie should. I loved it! I wished all the movies were that good, and i love all the Potter films. This movie rocks. And please potter fans, let us just accept the accolade, rather than disagree on its greatness, an acknowledgement to one potter should be treated as if an acknowledgement to all Potter.

It may have missed a few important plot points (as if the other films didnt too), but "Prisoner" was definitely the best of the series. "Half-Blood Prince" was magnificent, but I believe it took a lot of inspiration from "Prisoner" - clearly David Yates went back after the travesty that was "Order" and looked at the predecessors to get some inspiration on how to make the next film better, and I think a lot of the improvements came from "Prisoner". Wise decision on his part. And good pick by AOL.

NO WAY!!! PoA was the second worst. The worst was Chamber of Secrets. The best movies are HBP and GoF.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 03:52:04
Ive already commented on this, but I dont really understand why people dont like PoA! I mean... sure it left out the thing about the Marauders, but is that like the only reason? ..... anyways, I agree with FF_Voldemort - we should all be happy that a Potter movie made the list!! :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 05:49:07
Hmm..I think that although Prisoner of Azkaban was most disappointing for the fans, it was probably one of the better for the regular Harry Potter fan. I just saw it again yesterday, and I felt that if you go in the film not having read the books, it was one of the best and personally, I think it was the best film out all of them for normal viewers (may be partially because Gary Oldman ROCKS as Sirius hehe).
|

The whole list is bad and doesnt make any sense.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 06:33:18
I mean Borat and Wedding Crashers made the list, all LotR movies made it in the top 15 including 1 and 3!!! The 40-y-o Virgin made the top 10, Apocalypto and 300 never made the list! And out of all HP movies, PoA made number 10! This is the last "list" Im ever bothering to read.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 06:38:43
OOTPs my favourite for being the best adaptation followed by POA for getting the tone of the books right. HBP is by far the worst for its character assassination. I just dont get why people like it.

hmm i dont mind it being on the list. maybe its because it has the highest rating of 7.7 on imdb.com?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 08:30:38
PoA is my second favorite Harry Potter movie after HBP. It is the one which made me a big fan and turned me on to reading the books.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 08:39:42
yay PoA thats actually one of my favorites!!! Seriously!!! I dont understand why people hate that one so much because personally i thought as a whole that movie was REALLY GOOD!! Same thing with GoF...which is my absolute FAVORITE one of all of them!! OOTP was ok but NOT the BEST but it was a HELL of a lot better than HBP which to me was the absolute WORST of ALL the potter movies!!!
I honestly DONT understand WHY people like HBP so much! That movie was so choppy, a lot of the dialogue was very awkward and out of place, and my BIGGEST critique would be somethings in it just seemed like it was just PLACED there! Ugh....the harry/ginny relationship in the movie was very rushed just like random almost as random as the harrycho one in gof (but still gof tops all tho hahah). I just rally dont get it! I really wish...like i REALLLLY wish that they had spent more time on the memories instead of just showing TWO of them but thats ok! (the whole memomy thing insent a reason i hated the movie, just something i wish would have been better explained).
But there are things that i really did like about it.....hermione and her "boy" problems with cormac and ron with his lavender problems...the cormac actor and lavender actress were flippin HILARIOUS. The guy whole played the teenage riddle was absolutely AMAZING!!!!!! Seriously....out of EVERYONE even though he was probably one screen for a like 3 or so minutes total he was probably the most MEMORABLE actor of ALL on screen!
but nevertheless i just DONT understand why people liked HBP so much, but than again people never seem to understand why i like PoA and GoF so much so hey!! lol everyone has their favorites!!

I rated the movies best to worse in this order.
1 HP1 SS, 2 HP2 COS, 3 HP4 GOF, 4 HP3 POA, 5 HP5 OOTP, & 6 HP6 HBP.
I thought HP3 POA was the best book.
Also season greetings to all...................... ....

Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 09:14:42
Im just glad Harry Potter made the list. I loved PoA, even though it wasnt my favorite. And hey, Twilights not on the list!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 10:50:59
SERIOUSLY? POA WAS THE WORST! seriously! Its a disgrace to the books, I hated Alfonso after the movie, the thought of him doing another movie made me want to throw up!
SS and COS are the best! Chris Columbus was the only one who brought the books to film, the other ones are just commericial - which is why most people think that SS and COS are the worst. But the best movie, not considering the books was HBP, it visually looked so gorgeous, the effects were awesome, it was funny, the beginning was amazing.

@ ZekeA: hmmmmmm i kinda see your point about that list. im not sure if my ranking is the same but i DO more or less agree with your list
HP1&2 stayed the most true to the books BY FAR
HP3: i LOVED the tone of that movie! I also liked how the director used ssome creativity (esp with the shrunked head in the knight bus! i LOVED that) but STILL stayed true to the plot! I thought the creativity he put into the movie was awesome because it also FIT into the world!! idk how to explain what im try to esplain but i liked what he did
HP4: i LOVED the way that movie flowed! Even tho certian things had to be cut out i still liked the way there were able to work around the things and STILL make the movie work! Plus i think the ACTING was by far the BEST in this movie than in any other potter film
HP5: Hmmmm i didnt like this one as much as the others personally. But one thing i DID like about this movie was when harry was possessed and voldemort was telling him how weak he was that WHOLE little flashback part they had....was the BEST minute of the movie to me! I really liked that part.
HP6: ive already had me say about that movie. But i think if i HAD to rank the movies so far it would be this
HP4, HP3, HP2, HP1, HP5, HP6
I really hope the last movie wont let me down because so far i havent been a big fan of the way Yates is doing these movies....

Deffo agree. POA is great and feels very Pottery for me, if you know what I mean. 5 and didnt feel like Harry Potter to me and normally, like in 1-4 theres always a feeling and its like "ahh good film" but meh.
1-4 were the best, now Im not pleased. Maybe Yates will get DH right.

POA was definitely the best movie and deserves its place among the best movies of this decade. Unlike the subsequent ones it accomplished its role in the series and explored the full potential of the story. Cuaron made the themes stand out and blend together: Harry and Lupins scenes were extremely good, ; the window to Harrys past that is triggered by the arrival of Dementors was developped; Sirius, by the end of the movie became like an old brother to Harry and his place in the series was firmly established. And the characters all ended up in the right place: Harry had matured, Lupin was given a proper send-off with promise to be seen again, and the same for Sirius who left in a powerful scene saying that "for now his life will be too unpredictable." Plus, the whole learning magic at Hogwarts thing became more fun and magical and beautiful and wonderful. The exploration of new places was brilliant, as in the book (the Knight Bus, Hogsmead, the Shrieking Shack...)
Truly PoA accomplished its role in the franchise and did so in style and art. The only exceptions are a better explanation of Sirius and Pettigrews roles reversal including the Secret Keepers business (this remains the worst thing about PoA), and the Marauders backstory. Many people make too big a deal out of the latter. You have to ask yourself: what would it have added? Some more depth to the Marauders. But I think Sirius and Lupin didnt need it. Their character development was good enough as it was. Pettigrew no one cares about. Maybe the only one who suffered from this omission was Snape. We didnt learn about his old feuds with the Marauders. Now seriously, if you weigh this against the dozens of omissions in the later movies, you should forgive PoA for these little missteps.

So in my opinion, it definitely shouldve been GoF; PoA was okay, but it was my least favorite mainly because I disliked some of the random additions to the movie (the talking head on the Knight Bus, and the heads in the Three Broomsticks) and it didnt feel to me like an intense Potter or even a Potter movie, really. With GoF, I enjoyed the way it was filmed and I thought they portrayed the story very well and didnt cut too much. I also really liked SS and CoS as they stayed the best to the book; OotP was alright, but I dont know why theres so much rave about HBP; it was okay, but the only part I really enjoyed was Tom Feltons acting which was great! So I do enjoy all the movies, though, and am happy that an HP movie made the list! :D

I thought Prisoner of Azkaban was the best Harry Potter movie....
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 13:42:58
The list seems really biased towards lord of the rings if you ask me lol. And most of those movies on that list werent big movies. It just seems like the person who wrote that put their favorite movies on it... and POA is my least favorite. I really think the first two are the best. They capture the HP spirit and details nicely. Like... they actually have the plots in them...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 13:51:41
I find it funny that POA is peoples favorite book and movie when really, if you think about, its the least important book in the series lol. You can totally get rid of that book and slip in the plots they talked about in other books. All that book really revealed was the marauders map (which isnt that significant), sirius black was harrys godfather, lupin is a werewolf and friends of his parents, and... thats about it. The time turner introduction isnt even really important because thats like the only time they used it.

PofA is the best of the lot IMO because after GoF, Yates took over and the plotline went asleep. Add a screenwriter that doesnt seem to want to do adaptation anymore with a director that seems intent on recreating the film noir movement in each scene of HBP and you understand how Harry has gone Hollywood. I think they both should have read the sparknotes rundown on the series, but then you have to question the producer who likes them and continues to ask them back. Perhaps part of the problem with starting a series before the books are finished? Most of these lists are just made up in their office to help sell their paper or service, they usually arent very meaningful. The Lord of the Rings series was better handled by the same team in a short period of time, though it could have been edited down as well as it dragged at times. Let the editor do their job please! Many of the films on this list dont belong there, which cues you into the fact that these lists are inside jokes, not to be taken seriously. Too bad they kept Yates and that writer IMO, these films are getting worse when they should be getting better.

it took me 3 times seeing PoA to like the movie..i did NOT like it the first time i saw it. and i agree with some of the others that liked GoF then HBP then OotP. GoF was my favorite book and now CoS is my least fav movie. But I will watch them all on a Harry Potter weekend!!!!! and i agree....thank goodness twilight isnt on the list!!

Why is everyone saying HBP was the best? It was awful! David Yates once again made a mess of the movie. Half the time I didnt have an idea what was going on and ive read the books atleast 3 times. My parents who follow the series had no idea what was going on and it focused on the comedy romance too much! PoA deserved its place, it defintely brought the magical and dark feeling of the book and im glad it was rated one of the best movies. :)

@ ginmo... wow, you think it was the least important? What about the Wormtail plot? HUH? Thats pretty important, if you ask me. And pretty much every other thing in the book... like, we learn about Trelawny! Important? Yes.

Hi phoenixtears0731:
Well we all have diff likes dislikes about the HP movies. As for HP3 I do Not think they gave Sirius Black enough screen time to tell his story, same thing in happened in HP4 to Sirius Black. He needed more time to become the important part of Harrys life that he was.................
Y es I agree on HP5 the part where Harry was possessed was great that was far & away the best part of the movie, I just wished that they has added some flashbacks of Hagrid to that scene.................... .......
As for HP6 I gave it a D for dreadful, it was putrid + so much was left out & it did not flow sad in my view..................... .......
Sad in my opinion that we have these great HP books that WB changes the stories. I wanted these great books brought to life on the screen, not butchered like Yates has done with HP 5 & 6........................ .............
I just hope that HP7 A & B will be better, but with Yates I am not optimistic at all..................
The 7 HP books are the true joy not the films.................... ................
ashty potter well said about Yates.............. Sad part is that WB could have done great things with the HP series but they are just milking it with Yates as director................. .................

ashtypotter, why did you say "Why is everyone saying HBP was the best?" Everyone hasnt said that. Some have said its the best, some put it right in the middle, whereas others have put it at the bottom of their list. HBP is the first Harry Potter movie I had seen after reading the book and I had no problem whatsoever with knowing what was going on. Could it be that you expected it to have everything in the book scene by scene and line by line from pg 1 to pg 652?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 17:53:29
Yea for PoA but wasnt my favorite. At least it beat Twilight. Unlike another list it didnt even make it to the top 10 on. I think HBP should be best movie. I just got it for Christmas! (I was screaming my head off when I saw it in BlueRay!) But YEA for PoA!

Why POA?
So many stunning visions
Harry flying on Buckbeak over the castle and the black lake with a look of love and joy. A boy who wants to live.
The trio seeing Buckbeak killed
That vision, Ron tearing up, Hermione crying and holding him, and Harry holding her. That is the trio.
Harry talking to Lupin about what memory he used to make a patronus.
Snape shielding the trio from Lupin
Harry and Hermione in the forest running from Lupin
Harry defending Sirius against the Dementors
The vision Harry saying my dad will come, and Hermione saying your dying , both of you and then Harry proving himself.
Last, when Sirius touches Harrys face and then his heart.
This is why POA.

I love reading the order people put the film series in as everyone does it completely differently. I suppose thats due to each film being made in completely different ways but the reasons people give for each film are for different reasons, no one puts them in order of any one specific thing.
I think Ill do that now,
Closest adaptation storywise: 1, 2, 4, 5, 3, 6...
Closest adaption in tone: 3, 5, 6, 4, 2, 1...
Best adaption with regards to pace: 5, 3, 2, 4, 6, 1...
Visuals: 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
Overall: 5, 3, 2, 1, 4, 6...

half blood prince was my favourite but POA is probably my second favourite... Im sure DH will be my new favourite though. At least Poa made the list, and on the bright side...Twilight ISNT!!!!!!!! I now quite dislike reading these "lists" though cause they make no sense!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-25 22:26:38
Personally I thought POA was fantastic. Its my favorite one than HBP. HBP was entertaining and funny. But you see a whole different side of Harry, Hermione and Ron. Its a lot ore emotional for Harry. So when he becomes emotional in GOF, OOTP and HBP. He learn over time how to be an emotional person through POA. So it is one of my favs of the series.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 00:25:43
my two favourites are PoA and HBP (those seem to be two that go together as favourites for lots of fans). Id put them 6, 3, 4, 2, 1, 5 best to worst. Love them all though. Its HP, its got to be good.

@ZekeA: yes i do agree about that when i comes to sirius! I do wish they would have done a better job developing characters in the movies! Even tho it IS a movie theres still a way to develop the characters (although i know it wouldnt be as detailed as in the books but still). I also wish they wouldnt do these relationships just so RANDOM! Thats one thing that just bothers me! The harry and cho relationship was somewhat developed (tho not alot) but you got the sense that harry liked in in GOF with goofy things hed do when he looked at her and stuff! BUT in HBP i just hated how as soon as he arrieved at the burrow he sees ginny in the window and is just like "ahhhhhhhh". That was the most random thing! I just didnt like how it was developed at ALL!! AAHH. And...im REALLY curious as to HOW they are going to show that they know the ring and the cup are hocruxes because THOSE memories were just skipped over....you know i read somewhere that all the memories were intact in the orginal script but yates cut them out except to because he didnt want to focus on tom riddles past....sometimes i actually wonder if hes read these books and if he has if he only read them ONCE >< as i remember, knowing tom riddles PAST is the KEY to DESTROYING him!!! i agree with you yates really isnt doing it for me at all either. During OOTP I thought i didnt like it as much because somethings needed just we cut out (i REALLY wish they would have shown their FULL journy though the department of mysterious and of them going through the many different rooms!) and i thought maybe HBP hed win me over more than he did in OOTP but i just dont like the way this director is doing things and i just HOPE DH will be better as thats my FAVORITE book in the entire series!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 08:00:21
@gimmo: PoA i think was actually a key element in the series! That book to me is like the clam before the storm that erupts in GOF. Plus that book gives such strong glimps to harrys past and reasons for so many things that happened. I think playing that out in POA gave it time to actually develop and by putting that information in any other book would have given it less time to develop! Idk how to explain it but thats the best that i could. That book just seems emotional to me because hes forced to face not voldemort but his past (well that may seem weird to say because voldemort is in his past too) hmmmmm i think im trying to say that everything he has to face in that book makes him realize he doesnt have parents and the reasons for that slow unveil themselves: sirius, lupin, peter, the dementors, his protronus, i think to NOT have that book would have been devestating to the development of harrys story and his initial reason for doing the things that he did later on in the series (im really sorry i cant explain myself the way i want to hahaha) But all that aside i REALLY did like POA because that book had an AMAZING twist to it! Seriously! And.....when it cames to the jokes/casual dialogue it was DEFFINETLY the FUNNIEST!!! hahahaha

I agree 100% that POA was the best movie in the franchise and it deserves its place as one of the best films of the decade. This is the first film, in my opinion, to stand truly alone as a film and as a work of art. Cuaron had a style and he stuck with it, never lingering away from his intended vision. I just felt that, out of all of the directors (at least when it comes to style and aesthetics), Cuaron was a master: he made sure to put an ominous choir scene toward the beginning to let audiences know this is a school of wizards; he made the moving paintings more noisy and more invasive; and he used perfect transitions to mark the changing of time and place. No other director has achieved this as effectively as he had. POA is definitely a diamond in the rough. Yates follows as the second best director. He, too, loves the craft, and he knows what hes doing.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 10:47:26
POA is the worst movie... its just terrible, they left out so much and the directors vision ruined nearly everything they left in. Just for the hell of it, the rankings:
1. SS
2. OOTP
3. COS
4. GOF
5. HBP
6. DH #2
7. DH #1
8.POA
Thats right, they havent come out yet and they still are better by default than POA.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 12:44:44
It is pretty clear that PoA is going to be the one film of the series remembered as a really good movie. If you want to know why, then look at the #1 and #3 films: Fellowship and Return of the King. Prisoner was the most like the Rings films in that it focused on the story rather than on the narrative details. At any rate, kudos to Cuaron: he probably saved the series (WB probably would have dropped HP if the box office slide had continued) and he left the one really good film of a series of mostly near-misses.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 15:33:24
Well POA was obvioulsy my favorite one when it came out, and remained until OoTP. My favorite one has been HBP (yes, ive read the book and still loved it), even though all stuff they cut with the memories and the battle (which i didnt mind too much). I would have to say my order is: 6, 5 and 3 tied, 4, 2, 1. I know may will dissagree, but that
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 15:52:39
Yay! PoA is totally my favorite HP movie so far! I can watch it sooo many times and still not get sick of it. OotP sucked and HBP was ok. But I am happy that I got HBP on DVD for Christmas!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 19:36:07
Heres something that I think we can all agree on... THE LAST TWO FILMS ARE GOING TO BE THE BEST!!! I dont think Ive ever anticipated a movie release more than Deathly Hallows Part 1. Then I will will have never anticipated a movie release more for Deathly Hallows Part 2 after Part 1 is released ;)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 20:07:31
I dont get why people rag on about the movies 4-6 not being true to books like PS and CoS were. For petes sake everybody, look at their length!! Of course Columbus could stay that true to the books. He only had 200 pages to work with. Its not rocket science you know. For me: favourite book...DH far and away! Favourite film: OOTP I loved the darkness, followed closely by PoA because I love time travel stories and Remus. Films and books are different genres, so I am trying not to confuse the two by jumping on what they omitted from the films, just the experience of watching them. I went back to the theatres 3 times for OOTP just to watch the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2009-12-26 20:26:18
Goblet and Azkaban are the top two at the moment, but I have yet to re-watch HBP, which is also a favorite, so the prior listing is subject to change.
Im getting a tad bored with PS at the moment. Bought the UE, so thats that.
"Harry Potter and the Goblet of the Prisoner of the Philosophers Order of the Deathly Half-Blood Prince!" Just needed to get that out.lol

I love this franchise. I have enjoyed all the movies, watched them COUNTLESS times. Seen them in the theatre more times than most. I love POA for SO many reasons...The way the trio REALLY came together as an ensemble, the introduction of so many new characters, the subplot of the time turner (which is really a sci-fi device) so beautifully developed by Jo and depicted visually by Cuaron, and then there is THE SCORE. The gold standard set by John Williams that is without a doubt the finest of all the movies. So much so that WB uses that music repeatedly in trailers and promotion. I listen to that soundtrack so often I feel a part of it. Although this movie did not match the box office grosses of the others, POA collectible items continue to be some of the most sought after memorabilia in the series. I am a devout believer and fan of both the book and film.

Prisoner of Azkaban has the best cinematography and the most amazing transitions - the whole clock tower and birds thing was a stroke of genius. I just watched Half-Blood Prince again on Blu-Ray, and the whole second half of it was practically in black and white. The human eye is drawn to vibrant colour and contrast, and I found it utterly unappealing.
Prisoner of Azkaban had the tone absolutely perfect... even down to the colour of Hermiones jacket. I am definitely looking forward to the next 2 though.

Incidentally, Moviefones view of PoA matches IMDBs, where Prisoner leads the other Harry Potter films by a wide margin. However, The Two Towers and several other films beat out PoA at IMDB. If you look at the critics, the PoA again handily beats out the other films: but, again, a lot more than 9 other films beat out PoA.

Im happy one of the first 3 made it, because those were the best and the "epic" movies out of the three. They focused on the story and development of characters more than the last 3 did (though Goblet was more half and half). The last two, while good, focused more on the fun little side stuff so that the movie would be more enjoyable to the casual viewers. They were more like the typical summer blockbuster; a "just-for-fun" movie to watch to kill some time. Though, the last two received good reviews (or in OotPs case, OK reviews) making them different than the average summer movie. Look at PoA in the professional critics point of view; best artistically looking, the "turning point" as it became more darker, better acting, and well thought out. The critics loved it so it should come as no surprise that PoA would be considered the best. I would have liked to see the first one there.

Whoao. People are saying HBP and OotP are the best ones?! What has the world come to? For me, OotP and HBP were both the worst ones. Both of them are waaaay below GoF, which is slightly below PoA, and the first two are the best ones. I can tell you right now that the Deathy Hallows movies are going to be bad, because OotP and HBP messed up everything so much, its nearly beyond repair. Even though I liked SS and CoS the most, I can see why PoA was chosen. It definitely had the best filming techniques, symbolism, use of lighting and color to convey the story. You know, the actual story that actually happened in the books. Unlike HBP, where pointless teenage romance crap took the place of actually learning about Voldemorts horcruxes and ruined the whole mood of the movie, so that by the end you didnt know if you were supposed to cry or laugh when Dumbledore fell off the Astronomy Tower. Come on. I could direct a better movie than David Yates.

I agree, insanefreddy. Why did the books become successful in the first place? Because they had an amazing story. The movies just need to put that same story on screen and put a little of their own something here or there to leave their mark as the director. The first four did that while Yatess movies cut out some of the story, made the side-stories seem extra important, and had no character development at all. Ive read critics say that Ron and Hermione seemed more like flat background characters than actual important characters with depth and my cousins, who watched HBP with me, said the same. Also, something in HBP that made me go "WTF!?": Hagrid came out of nowhere in HBP with a dead spider. I was afraid that they cut him out of the movie and after that scene, I was beginning to wish they did. Still, I love all the HP movies. Just the last two a little less.

I agree that a film should tell the same story as the book: but keep in mind that telling a story on screen often requires very different techniques from telling it with words. Things that work great in a book can fail to communicate any point when enacted, whereas seemingly completely "made up" movie scenes often say the same thing as a chapter in a book. That is why PoA was so popular with critics and general audiences: it told Rowlings story of the importance of making the hard choice to unravel ironic truths extremely well. Rowling herself stated that it did the best job of the first three films of telling the story.

Having not read Book 5 onward quite yet (I lost interest in Harry Potter for a while, when I was interested in other things) I cant say I liked OOTP or HBP.
I loved the third story in general. I dont know why really, but it was always my favorite. I had the game for GameCube and Gameboy Advance, had the DVD, and watched it a ton of times!
I have to say, re-watching them, it is still one of my favorites. Maybe just for the simple reason Daniel and Rupert are incredibly cute in it, but I like it the best. Id have to say in order, I like: 3, 1, 2, 6, 5. Im re-watching them as I finish each book, so maybe after reading the fifth and sixth books Ill understand the movies more, but I didnt really understand much of it.

I watched films 1-5 first. My favorite then was Goblet of Fire. I then read all the books and re-watched the movies. After reading the books and watching the movies, Sorcerers Stone and Chamber of Secrets easily follow the books the best. Thats because they are the shortest books and it was easier to do. Half Blood Prince (the movie) was good but the end was sorely disappointing. They added scenes that should have been cut and they focused to much on the romance when they should have spent more time on the climax and the battle at the end. Also, they cut the funeral when they shouldnt have. Im not quite sure i have a favorite movie because it depends on my mood and what one i feel like watching. My favorite book was Deathly Hallows though. As for the list that AOL Moviefone put together... anyone that has reviewed that list knows its entirely inaccurate and blows. The critic has bad taste in movies and most of them dont belong on the list whatsoever.
