Previews of the upcoming LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1 - 4 video game continue to appear online. The latest are from gaming websites Destructoid and GameSpot.
The most interesting new tidbit (in my opinion) is the amount of playable characters: 140. From Destructoid: Subtle nods from the first four books are throughout the game, and with 140 playable characters, fans of the series will surely find some odd combinations to play with. One awesome moment was in the Chamber of Secrets portion of the game, where Harry enters the memory of Tom Riddle. In this level, players can play co-op or switch between the colored Harry or the sepia-toned Riddle. It's not often you get to play as He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. And a little more about gameplay from GameSpot: There are plenty of secrets to discover in the world of Harry Potter by being thorough. Not only do you find your way to the next area, but if you find the four crest pieces in each area, you'll also get a gold brick, which will then give you access to bonus material. Moving from one area to the next doesn't involve jumping around in a hub menu; instead, the story events (six events in each story) will unfold when they're supposed to, which provides a seamless transition from one level to the next.

As someone who plays videogames... 140 playable characters is NOT a good idea. i repeat NOT. Most of them will be generic in both ability and actions. The less characters you can play, the more room for individuality of the playable character. Just use the main main main!!! characters and not sub characters. it think thats a mistake... but im soooo buying it :D

im most likely gonna wait until they release the lego harry potter years 1-7. instead of just getting years 1-4.

@muttw007- I highly doubt theyll release years 1-7. Theyre probably going to have two games, Years 1-4 and Years 5-7. Not 1-7.

DANG! 140 characters! They mustve put every single character in books 1-4 in the game. How AWESOME!! I would totally play with Ludo Bagman. I bet he makes a hilarious Lego or Rita Skeeter.

@FF_Voldemort: Games are way more high tech these days and so are the systems theyre played on. Theyve been working on this game for awhile and since its Harry Potter and JKR gives a pretty thorough description of each character in her books...it would be hard to make any of them generic. Have you heard of the game Scribblenauts? That game has WAY over 140 possible characters and actions and its one of the best games around.

Hey I hope you guys are right, that wont stop me from buying it. Im refering to how each character will be played, I pray they are not clones. And phoenixmaster, I dont think starwars had 140 characters. All I am saying is the number seems fairly big that it may backfire.

This game looks great! I am positive Star Wars didnt have that many characters, and Indiana Jones didnt have that many either. 140! I cant even think of that many HP characters! JK, I easily could! :o

Something I just thought of - in Lego Star Wars, there are multiple versions of the same character. There are many versions of Leia and Luke, simply wearing different clothes. I think this is what may happen with this game, and they may have characters such as 1st year Harry, 2nd year Harry, etc. They may do the same with Ron and Hermione too, and that may take up several of those 140 characters. Still awesome though!

Guess what?
In the LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 could fit The Trio, Hagrid, Quirrel and Fang (confirmed playable characters)
and all of these characters I hope they will include and still fit 8 other characters not included on this list!(perhaps 2 random DEs 1 random student from each house, 1 random house-elf and 1 random goblin?)

I was sort of thinking the same thing. I mean, 140 characters is a lot, and im not sure there are even that many in the books. I wouldnt put it past them to come up with something.
