The Telegraph has a new interview with Potter production designer Stuart Craig, where he discusses his career, his work on the series, as well as the detail he has put into items such as the Golden Snitch and the Weasley Clock. Of note was as an emotional moment that occurred for him recently on set. "The last time I cried was a few days ago when we filmed the death of Alan Rickman's character, Snape. It's quite difficult to cry in rushes -- where we watch the previous day's work -- but he is an extraordinary actor and he dies an extremely good death." Aw thats nice of him. FIRST!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 10:09:02

I hope they did a nice job with that scene, it sounds like they did it justice. It was definitely one of my favorite scenes in DH, and Im sure it will be very emotional to see on screen. Alan Rickman is such a brilliant actor!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 10:10:39

It shows where they are in filming, they are so close to finishing!! Noo!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 10:20:07

When I first read the headline, I thought it said Alan Rickman died. Scariest moment of my life.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 10:29:46

I actually welled up when I was reading this. :(

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 10:33:02

harry8voldemort, I thought the same thing! I panicked! But thanks heavens that isnt the case. Im glad this moment is getting the justice it deserves. Its going be so heart-wrenching. :(

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 10:33:56

Reading stuff like this makes me really excited for DH, and very sad

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 10:58:54

omg that is so good to hear. i was worried they might skip over this a bit, but sounds like it will have the care and emotion it deserves

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 11:06:03

MASSIVE SPOILER in the article, if one hasnt read the book.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 11:17:11

OH NO! I didnt know Snape dies!! Joking, lol...but this really makes me feel excited to see the films since it seems like they are really putting all their effort into these final movies.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 11:18:17

OMG, OMG, OMG! honestly its the thing Im looking forwrd to the most! Im gonna cry, Im sure!! Alan Rickman is a good actor, really good! Freeeeeak I cant wait.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 11:20:04

Also, as tomj321 said, I was worried they wouldnt make a big deal out of it, so that made me really happy.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 11:37:07

Oh, that will be an AMAZING SCENE!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 11:47:02

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! !!!!!!!My man Snape. As much of a jerk he is, he is like my best friend. Im going to crying like a baby when he dies.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 12:05:35

It will be strange to watch that scene w/ my family, as I will certainly be crying, but they haven

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 12:05:59

Weasleygirl02, whaaaaat? && It makes me sad to see filming is nearly over. I can still remember being a happy little kid watching Sorcerers Stone with my my VCR haha :) I love this series~

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 12:35:27

Wow! I am excited. Alan Rickman is an amazing actor; he milks every character he plays to the best of his ability. I cant wait to see what Stuart Craig is talking about. If he cried in preproduction, I cant imagine how this scene will turn out in post-production.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 12:46:45

I am crying so much now. Snapes died! That is like one of the last things in the book!( if they are going in order) DH is almost over. I do not want this fandom to end!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 13:25:36

beccaPhoenix16, they arent going in order, you cant tell where they are by what theyve done, they filmed Ron and Hermiones kiss before Bill and Fleurs Wedding, and both of those before the 7 Potters scene. Honestly, the 7th one is such a blood bath that by the time Snape dies, your desensitized, so many other major characters die before that, that you hardly notice...

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 13:31:48

As many have said, this is very sad!! DH really is coming to a close and I dont want it to!!! You know, when I first read this book and snape was dying I was like, "yeah!!!" and "Oh well!" Only to find myself bawling as I read the chapter, the princes tale. :( However, I am not as crushed over this news story as I was when we heard that the deed was done and they filmed Freds death. Though I love snape, I am a wayyyy bigger weasley fan!! ( I remember hearing that somewhere but I cant remember where) Everything is happening too fast, but, so badly do I want to see this movie!!!! I feel like Im the one dying!! LOL!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 13:36:25

Generally they dont film the scenes in the order in which the scenes appear in the film. The difference with these films is that Part 1 scenes will be completed before Part 2 scenes. But generally what happens with filmmaking is that you will film all the scenes that take place on the same set/location regardless of when they occur in the movie. Its just more cost effective so you dont have to re-light the set, re-dress the props, etc. Plus you have additional costs each time you have to schedule the cast, shuttle them to set, etc. Cast may have several costume changes in a day while filming several non-sequential scenes on one set. That said... Im glad t hear they were moved by the dailies of Snapes death. Means the finished product will be all that more powerful if it can get the filmmakers to cry with the context of "action" and "cut, print, check the gate... thats a wrap."

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 13:38:48

Its good to know theyre doing his death justice. Alan Rickman is a really great actor, so it was always going to be good to at least some extent, but its still nice to be reassured that its going to be touching. There is one thing I can see them changing about his death, and thats the location. Though with how accurate the last to movies sound like theyre going to be, it wouldnt at all surprise me if they kept the location the same.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 13:53:29

I thought Alan Rickman died at first, too! Scary moment. And I agree, this is a HUGE spoiler is someone hasnt read the books.. maybe something should be done about that.. However, this news bit is oddly comforting. Although the death of Snape is indeed tragic, I am so glad it seems it has been given the justice it deserves.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 14:17:18

what a complement to alans acting that a crew member cried! im sure itll be a truly emotional scene.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 14:26:31

Wow, if a scene can make the producition designer cry, imagine the effect it will have on fans... not that he isnt a fan. I am definitely looking forward to this "Epic road trip opera" :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 14:34:52

Holy Crap! Theyve filmed that already??? OMG! I have never been a fan of Snapes, but his death scene in the book was pretty emotional, especially his last line to Harry, "look at me."

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 14:47:35

I know we havent seen the scene yet, so we cant formulate a very strong opinion; but Yates has managed to increase the intensity of the deaths as the films have progressed. In OOTP, Siriuss death didnt really affect me... I felt it all happened too fast and it didnt give the audience opportunity to react. However, in HBP, he nailed Dumbledores death with the proper music, the tone, and the acting to fit. Everything foreshadowed Dumbledores death, so there was a great preparation for it. Now, I feel hes truly mastered the art of killing off characters and making you feel for them. This is really good news. I think its safe to say that the conclusion of J.K. Rowlings story is in good hands with Yates.

Oh, how I will grieve for this tormented soul. To live a life of always wanting to belong to something greater and in doing so unkowingly causing the most unbearable loss...well, I will definitely be crying at this scene if the crew are crying. Yet another scene I would like to see them add is Harry afterwards going to get Snapes body and bring it forth to be honoured with the rest. I wonder how many little scenes JKR had mixing around in her mind, and even written that didnt make it into the book? The ending left so much open to individual interpretation and somewhat unsatisfying to tell the truth. But then, when the story is so great, we are always left wanting more.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 15:46:11

Alan Rickman death scenes are just awesome. This is what Im waiting for most. I love him as the Sheriff of Nottingham, and especially how he dies. Thats just fantastic! Hell do Snape justice for sure.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 16:01:38

Poor Alan Rickman, his character FINALLY has some quality screen-time and he dies. How sad is that? Well, not quite...then Harry takes a trip down Snapes-memory-lane. Thats probably going to be the most time we will ever see Snape in one continuous scene. All and all, not a bad finish. Thats of course, IF, the director doesnt cut the whole flippin thing to shreds. Then, Im back to how sad is that?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 16:33:57

OMG I WANT THIS MOVIE OUT NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. I CANT WAIT ANYMOREEEEEEE. The Snape-Lily-Harry storyline was my favorite. Thats going to be the most moving scene in the entire series for me and I think I may actually CRY in this movie (Ive only cried in the books... I havent even gotten emotional in one of the movies yet).

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 16:46:27

Who cares if its a spoiler, who hasnt read the 7th book by now? Furthermore they shouldnt be on this site if they havent.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 16:47:06

Wow, when Craig says he cried when he saw Snapes death! This speaks volumes about Alans ability to pull you in with every breath, hesitation, enunciation, facial expression. This is proof hes a pure genius.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 19:34:13

yes, im sure the vast majority of people that go to this site have read the book, but im really surprised mugglenet have just slapped a HUGE spoiler onto their site without any warning... from what i know, mugglenet have always had spoilers hiding, even if its a tiny one. eh... anyway im glad Snapes death is going to be an emotional scene, that was something they lacked a little in HBP (for Dumbledore).

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 19:56:22

IM RIDICULOUSLY EXCITED RIGHT NOW

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 20:11:25

Awww, he cried? Wow, thats actually really great to hear - it means theyve gotta be doing something right in this movie.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 20:14:34

This is snazztastic news! Im glad theyre doing Snapes death justice! And also, its not really the end of the fandom just because the movies are almost at their end; Star Wars or Lord of the Rings legions upon legions of fans havent gone anywhere.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 20:45:28

This is a very interesting article. Thank you for sharing and also, I do agree about it being a spoiler for those who have not read the book, but hopefully everyone has by this point!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-20 20:48:44

This is very exciting. If he cried then it will be really emotional and AWESOME :D. I cant wait for the movie, everything seems to be going right from what weve heard...... @filops @silversphynx @Lupin_Black @crispyo There is no such thing as a Harry Potter spoiler. Deathly Hallows has been out foe about 3 years. If someone hasnt read it by now they are not a Harry Potter fan and wouldnt care what happens anyways. Its rude to expect people to not discuss something because they dont feel like getting around to reading the book. Therefor there would never be any need for Mugglenet, or anyone else to warn about spoilers; it actually annoys me when people do.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 02:30:18

@kapuffy26 That isnt true. Sirius was very emotional and it did make me cry, while Dumbledore, as sad it was, it didnt make me cry. I dont know why but it just didnt.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 03:57:40

Whats he on about when he says "The device for counting house points wasnt in the books" ?! Yes it was. Only in the books they use Rubies and Emeralds etc, but theyve used beads there... How can he say that they came up with that?!?! >:(

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 04:41:41

OMG Im gonna be absolutely distraught watching this scene, but I know itll be done well! And Im sure we all appreciate the work the props dept. does :)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 05:57:37

This simultaneously excites and terrifies me. o.O Ive always loved Snape.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 07:29:25

Honestly, my copy of DH is waterlogged in many places form me crying, it was a very emotional book for me for many reasons. But when it got to that part I couldnt handle it. I was barely able to read I was crying so hard. The inside of my glasses filed with tears while I was looking down at the book. My mother actually came into my room to ask me if I was ok because she heard me crying. It does sound like they are doing the scene the way it deserves to be done. Im very excited to see it, and scared to know that were so close to the end.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 11:15:01

Its gonna be so sad watching him die. But he doesnt need to be like "a good death", you know? lol.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 11:31:38

Wow, if ever an article on here should have had a spoiler warning, this was it! Were just _presuming_ now that whoever still follows you MN people is already done reading all the books, are we? Were just presuming all of us _must_ be reading the books?!? Usually (before book 7!) you guys were so protective, considerate and careful about these things, but I guess no longer, hm?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 12:08:33

ashtypotter, maybe the reason you didnt cry in DD death was because you already knew why he died and that he and snape planned his death! :) I believe yates nailed it with dumbledore, and im certain he will with all the DH deaths, specially snapes and dobbys. As for all who think the headline is a major spoiler you may be right, but i believe almost all of us who enter mugglenet is because we are fan enought to already have read the books. Anyway, this scene, as well as all of the scenes, look amazing! I cant wait for DH! BTW you deserved a production design oscar nom, stuart craig. You are so amazing

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 13:10:04

@Icelander If you have no read the books then dont read about Harry Potter. Obviously people like that have been living under a rock or are illiterate. People have had years to finish reading the books. Why be careful about something anyone who likes Harry Potter at all already knows?

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 13:48:30

Titanic Spoiler!!! THE BOAT SINKS!! Cmon, if you like the series enough to even come to this site then you should like it enough to have already read each book at least twice. Otherwise youre a casual fan. If you didnt read the last book by now thats YOUR fault not MNs. And if your one of those "I like the movies well enough but I cant be bother reading the books" people then there is no hope for you to begin with.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 15:00:17

even though i detest the movies, scenes with alan rickman are always amazing. and to the whole spoiler controversy- its really not that big of a deal. if you didnt know snape dies by now then you obviously dont care about the series at all.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 15:01:05

I still cant believe theyve filmed this scene already!! I wonder if theyve filmed the "The Princes Tale" stuff as well. There hasnt been any casting news on a young Snape and Lily. When do mugglenet and TLC do their set reports???

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 15:53:15

Reading that made me Awww. I cannot wait for DH, especially Pt. 2!! While reading Snapes death for the first time I didnt really know how I should feel. I thought he was good, but I also thought that time was running out to find out about what side he was on. After The Princes Tale, however I was extrememly sad. I have a love/hate relationship with Snape but a mostly a love relationship ;) I am glad that Alan did a great job and I never expected less. I hope DH is as good as it sounds because so far Yates hasnt done the best job, imo.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 16:42:01

Oh my god. I dont know how Ill be able to hold myself together if a grown man can cry about this. I really hope that they do a good job on it... Im really heartbroken that he died anyway, but to see it.... Gah. I dont know how life will go on!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 17:08:28

I have to read Deathly Hallows again! Its the only Harry Potter book that I havent read in a while...but I could still remember some parts of it. I hope they do a really good movie with these two. Its seriously sad thats its coming to an end after ten years of the books and movies. But What sets me off is that Ive just found out that their making Twilights last books into two movies as well...geez...copying HP much?? And its going to be in 3D as well :@

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 17:15:01

The most Ive cried is when Fred died :( Being a twin myself, I kind of feel Georges pain when he sees Freds dead body. Its a horrible thought and I still cry whenever I think of it.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 18:05:54

I know Im going to cry my heart out when I see Snape die...Its just so sad. Alan Rickman is going to do it great justice.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-21 20:13:34

Definitely bringing tissues to this movie... And guys, theres always going to be people new to the series. I didnt get into it until the fourth book came out. So its entirely possible some people on here are in the middle of the series for the first time. However, I also agree people just into it need to be careful on these types of websites; they cant put up spoiler warnings forever, which is as long as new people will be introduced to Potter.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-22 08:57:52

Obviously, Im so excited for the films but I am especially excited to see Alans acting because he is SUCH a good actor, and I think hell (hopefully) really be able to go all out on his performance, considering hell be working with adult actors and shows a variety of emotions. It just makes me happy to hear what Stuart Craig said, I cant even describe it.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-22 10:28:39

Ooops! When I glanced at this I read Stuart Craig dies "an extremely good death" =/ That would be bad =( Anyway... this is good news! =) I cant wait!!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-22 13:15:44

Exactly my reaction too BeeHermione, I got so excited hearing this!! But then also scared for how Ill react to this part in the movie. I love Snape, its so sad :(

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-22 13:28:21

SevvyLover: Lmao! That wouldve really sucked! Stuart Craig is a mastermind.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-22 13:54:04

Cant wait for that scene... and for all DHs ones. Its gonna be epic, and unforgettable. And i dont doubt ill cry, given the fact that even the production designer (Stuart Craig rocks) cried in the pre-production. And for all of those who say its not gonna be that good because of Yates, well, think again. All of them have done greatly (my favourite movies out of all) yet it was Yates who directed HBP (the greatest of the 6) so i KNOW hell nail it in DH. I know everyone has the right to their own opinions.... but not this time. Yates rocks. And.... Alan Rickman too

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-22 16:13:49

This is one of the scenes that I am most waiting to see and most dreading. Im most waiting to see this scene because it will be a very sad, heartfelt and yet climatic moment and because shortly after, Harry will see Snapes memories and find out that his infamous potions professor wasnt all bad. Im dreading this scene though because my friends always joke around about how my favorite fictional character is dead (in reply to me telling their favorite singers, from the Beatles, or actor in The Outsiders movie based on the book by SE. Hinton, or fave. fictional character from some random book like the Outsiders is dead or too old for them) They go "Yours is too." My retort to that is always that "Snapes not dead until he dies in the movie." because I havent actually seen it so its not really offical yet. And hes only 38 when he dies in the book. You know what I mean though, about the not offically dead thing? Im just clinging to my fave. fictional character and Im not ready to let go yet. I know, I still have my fan fictions... Anyway, I want to see this scene and I dont want to. I sware if anyone cheers when Snape dies they are getting called "Dunderheads!" Im not above yelling in the middle of the movie theatre. I cheered for the Avatars in Avatar, so yeah...

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-22 16:23:51

I know that when the movie(s) are over theres nothing else Harry Potter left to obsess over. I guess Ill have to re-read the books. I cant wait until JK. Rowling finishes that "Political Fairy Tale for Children" she said shes writing and all the other books shes allegedly writing. She said shes "putting pen to paper." Someone reported that shes writing a mudrer mystery. I even read somewhere she was working on something Harry Potter related, I think it was supposed to be Harrys parents Hogwarts years. Then theres the world of Harry Potter guide thing she sued the Harry Potter Lexicon over. Half of these rumors probably have no basis on fact but its still fun to speculate. I wish she would write a book about Harrys parents school years-adulthood (school years mean more Snape) or his childrens lives/futures. Anyway, whatever she writes, Ill buy it for sure! Ill still obsess though, even when the movie(s) are done with. Ill spend my time collecting Harry Potter merchendise and I totally have to visit the theme park. I hope its open over my Spring break trip to Flordia.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-22 17:08:38

BellatrixCrucioYou Im with you on not being impressed with Yates.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-23 16:22:47

iheartseverussnape95 I feel the same way. I know hes "dead", but to me it wont officially happen until I see it in the movie. As strange as it sounds, I cried when I read "Snape Dies" because it seems more of a finality to me.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-02-24 11:57:29

Andrew (and other youre not a _real_ fan replies): I _have_ read the books, repeatedly, including the audio books, repeatedly. I just am one of those (rare ones?) who prefers to see the films first, fully enjoy it on its own merit, and _then_ find out more by reading the book. Do I really need to elaborate on the benefits of doing it this way (with all those loud hated the film, so much missing from the book! out there, heh)?? Yet, somehow this concept seems not to have occurred to the staff here at all, judging by their been long enough since _book_ came out, all bets are off strategy concerning spoilers. Of course Im not saying you or any fan sites should wait forever, but to me it didnt seem unreasonable to expect some things still come with at least a _note_ until the corresponding film was out. And then, shouldnt you be thinking ahead a bit, perhaps hold of stories like this for times _after_ the films are out...or this site is soon out too ;)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2011-01-19 05:40:42

No offense to Snape lovers, but he isn't my favorite character. I think he is funny though. I think that scene deserved a lot more attention than it got in the book. I hope they also put A LOT of time on Harry's death scene so it will be just as cool!

SPOILER ALERT ON THIS POST!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2011-01-21 06:06:35

Thats cool I guess but it's so sad that the Harry Potter movies are coming to an end

If an adult from the crew cries over snapes death, then...THERE IS NO. FLIPPIN. WAY, that I'LL be able to last. However, I'm going to it with my mom and dad, so it'll be funny to watch THEM cry. :D
