The Scotsman reports that a horoscope and natal chart written by JK Rowling some time ago for the parents of a baby boy is now up for sale:
The multi-millionaire writer, who celebrates her 45th birthday tomorrow had met the parents of the boy at baby classes she attended with daughter Jessica when she was a penniless single mother in Edinburgh.
The horoscope, dedicated to Jack David Buchanan who was born in 1994, offers a fascinating insight into Rowling's writing and imagination before she went on to worldwide success.
The cover illustration depicts the chart's key astrological symbols of the sun, fishes and a lion in pen, ink, and coloured pencil laid down on bright blue coloured card.
In it, Rowling, who is worth more than £500million, displays a detailed knowledge of Western astrology which was later to play an important part in her books.
She wrote: "Born the cusp of Aquarius and Pisces. He will enjoy school, perhaps be accident-prone, (like all Pisces) could be prone to alcoholism, and (perhaps like us all) may well fall in love with someone totally incompatible."

Really JKR? Is this just for laughs or does she actually believe in this crap?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 13:33:49
WHY would you sell something like that? To have something written especially for you by J. K. Rowling herself would be priceless. I'm so jealous.

alllrighty thenn... y would someone sell that?!

It's one thing to appreciate the symbolism and history of Astrology and another to believe in horoscopes. I personally think Rowling loves character building and symbolism. Nothing wrong with that.

I would never, EVER sell something that Jo gave me. LUDICROUS!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 13:50:53
Seriously? I mean, its cool to have the fortune thing done by Jo, but it is downright depressing. An accident prone alcoholic?!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 13:54:04
@Amund - "does she actually believe in this crap?" ...Is that a serious question? She wrote a freakin' 7-part series based on magic, for God's sake!!! No, I'm sure she has absolutely no interest in the likes of horoscopes or Astrology, at all, seeing as how all her characters have appropriate connections to it (if you do the research, which, apparently, you have not).
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 14:01:04
Wow. This is quite the story. I mean, first off, who would sell something that Jo Rowling has made for you? Now that's something I would never do. But "accident prone alcoholic"? That doesn't seem right. Quite sad really.

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 14:03:43
@Austin Langley - Writing a FANTASY book on magic doesnt necessarily meen you believe in astrology yourselves. Astrology is even ridiculed in the books to some degree. Astrology isn't even specifically magic-related.

Wow! Why would you even sell something like that! She's so lucky to have something like that from jk! I'm so jealous!

To all those asking whether she believe in Astrology and the like.....I got 2 words for you: Professor Trelawney. Read the books and you'll get JK's viewpoint on Astrology.

Txrabbit - Thats not astrology ;) thats divination

If JKR seriously believes in that crap that is Astrology, then my respect for her has just gone down several levels....
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 14:33:27
I completely agree with Amund. Just because you write about something does not mean you are that type of person or that you believe what you are writing about. It is fiction. I'm am sure Jo does not believe everything her books say especially the fantasy parts like dragons, wizardry, etc. They sure make a great series though!

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 14:38:21
actually, in an artical jo says she wishes that she could believe in magic, but can't. anyways i would feel so honerd if jo wrote anything specailly for me even if i didn't believe it to be true.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 14:38:21
people, seriously? I don't believe that stuff like horoscopes is true, but it's still fun to look at and awesome when a couple things seem right. Even if you don't believe it works it's still fun. Why would your respect go down for her even if she did?

Most of the people who "believe in" astrology don't know anything about it, the same as most of the people who "don't believe in" astrology. It is far more than "sun sign" - it includes ALL of the planets (including the minor ones like Chiron [who might be Firenze, actually]), the houses, the astrological signs, the aspects [angles], etc - as well as how they interact. If JKR really KNOWS astrology (and from the books it looks like she very well may), then more power and respect to her. To calculate a chart by hand takes about two hours. And, then, once you have the chart (which is strictly mathmatical and these days is often done by a computer), you have to INTERPRET it - that's the tricky part. But if to have a personally done chart put on the market strikes me as greed overcoming personal privacy.

why is everyone freaking out over two sentences written in a 12 page horoscope.

@Lynn981 Thank you. Like I said earlier, appreciating it's history and symbolism doesn't mean she's a part of today's evil money-making industry, aimed towards the ignorant and naive. Lynn981 gets it.

How come we can't comment on MuggleCast #203? It was great! I've listened to it about 5 times just getting psyched. Loved listening to Andrew and Melissa. They were so pumped by it, it was fantastic. It's so boring without any HP news, and other than a trailer, we really need MuggleCast. Or, maybe I'll just write another fanfic to get my HP fix. Really wishing Labor Day to Nov. 19th will fly by.

Was cleaning today and (and obviously procrastinating finishing the job)came across my copies of HP with cover illustrations by M.S. Corley. Look like Penguin classics. You can find them at, http://mscorley.blogspot.com/2009/02/harry-potter-redesign.html

Chill out, people! So she wrote a horoscope for someone. That doesn't mean that she believes in astrology. She wrote a 7-book series on magic, that doesn't mean that she believes in magic! She wrote this horoscope as a gift for her friend! It was all in fun! Obviously, she had a lot of knowledge about that sort of thing, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to write Harry Potter!

relax people, according to an artical i read joe wishes she could believe in magic but, just can't! anyways i think it would be one of the greatest honors to have joe herself write u something even if u don't believe it's true or not.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 20:29:00
i can't believe they would sell it!!!!!!!!!! they must have really needed the money- that is the only circumstance i could agree with on selling it.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 20:59:49
@Austin Langley i totally agree with you! I am POSITIVE that she based her characters according to their sign. Harry is a total Leo in a lot of ways: noble, brave, kinda proud... Hermione is a complete Virgo: super analitic, practical, grounded... and Ron is a total Pisces: fun, creative, a mess in a lot of ways, but loyat... Thats why they keep fighting all the time but end up with each other, pisces and virgo are oposites and perfect for each other. Snape=total Capricorn, James= total Aries. Everything just fits. I do believe in this crap. I dont believe astrology predicts the future but Im positive it influences our personalities. And i would be astounded if Jo didnt base their birthdays on this

Why sell it? I would treasure anything written by J.K. Rowling for me.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 06:10:50
I wanna read the rest of it, I'm a Pices born in 1994 too :) but yeah like Gilberto Ramos ^ said the characters do fit with their star sign traits. Oh and why would you sell something that JKR wrote especially for you?!! Forget the money, I'd treasure it because it would have sentimental value. (Though obviously not for this guy)

Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 10:12:21
Well I can strongly say tht Jo did an extensive research 4 HP, u can never point at anythn n say tht its meaningless...She is a perfectionist...U can c in her official website, her note abt wands...Also d name meanings, sun signs n all match wid d characteristics of d characters...So I believe tht she likes astrology, n tht is nice coz 2 relate n c is interestn :) N ya 2 sell it is foolish, he doesnt realize its value!! Grr stupid guy!!

Despite several "intellectual" conclusions drawn here, it is interesting to note that people like Jung, Einstein, Gandhi and Rowling have all believed at some level in the magic of the planets ( yes--not the stars as wrongly assimilated).( Not to mention hundres of politicians and kings throughout the ages). There is a very well established University of Astrological Psychology in England that has raised astrology to a higher level. After all--a 3,000 year old discilpe/philosophy can´t be all that wrong, can it?
Leave her be. We all have a right to our personal beliefs.

Depending on the time of the birth, the child is either an Aquarian or a Pisces. He cannot be both sun signs.

So when can we SEEEEEEEE it?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-03 03:10:48
@Plum_cake - the cusp is the border between two signs, and usually someone is on one side or the other. However, it is possible to be exactly on the cusp - like normally someplace is on one side of the US-Canada border or the other, but I recall a WALL STREET JOURNAL feature article some years back about a factory that is on the border, and they have to be careful which door things come into or go out of, and where they store stuff. Also, when you say "child is either an Aquarian or a Pisces. He cannot be both sun signs" you are clearly unaware that the sun sign is only ONE PART of a chart. I've done sketchy commentaries on charts that run to 3 or 4 single-space typewritten pages. At 12 pages, this is clearly an in-depth analysis of ONE PERSON's chart. It doesn't apply to anyone else unless they were born at the SAME time and place. (Aside from "star twins", the same combination happens every 24,000 years or so.)
