Not even two months after the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park opened in Orlando, today there are rumors concerning a park to be opened in India featuring rides from Universal properties such as Harry Potter. From The Wall Street Journal:
Reliance, a media-to-energy conglomerate backed by billionaire Anil Ambani, would be full owner of the park but would pay Universal royalties and fees for using brands and content linked to popular Hollywood movies such as "Jaws," "E.T.," "Spider-Man" and the "Harry Potter" franchise, this person said.
The park would look much like Universal's other major theme parks in Los Angeles, Orlando, Fla., and Japan, with a variety of roller coasters and rides, shops with movie-related merchandise and nearby hotels. The complex is expected to stretch over 400 acres, which would make it one of the biggest such sites in the world, the person familiar with the matter said.
Reliance's Big Entertainment subsidiary and Universal, a unit of General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal, still are discussing terms, but could reach a deal this year. One person familiar with the matter warned, however, that talks are at an early stage, and could yet break down.

dang. 400 acres? thats WAY bigger than the one in orlando. ive been to it and its great but i cant imagine a 400 acre park. that would be quite cool though. but im surprised at where they said they will build it. india? why not the uk?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 20:48:19
why india? why not the uk? and 400 acres is pretty huge!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 20:49:56
hmmmm i love having Hogwarts here in Orlando! i would love to share the Magic, but i love the idea of Hogwarts being one of a kind.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 20:50:13
This would be AWESOME. I was crushed at the fact that the Harry Potter theme park is all the way in America, a place where my parents would never go or let me go.
We go to India all the time (Being Indians living in Australia) so this would be AWESOME! I wonder where they would build it though...
You don't just come accross vacant lands spansing 400 acres... They're probably going to have to cut and destroy a lot of things to build this. :/
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 21:06:16
Well... they building it in India becos Anil Ambani who is in talks with Universal is an Indian !
How awesome would this be !!!!!!!!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 21:21:49
India? I went there in 2008. Totally not the right place for another HP themepark.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 21:29:01
India seriously? Is that really the right place to put it? I mean I swear somewhere in Europe would be the better place for it. And I agree with Faith. I am all for sharing the magic but I just like the idea of Hogwarts being a one of a kind thing like in the books. I mean maybe they can build something that isnt as big as the US Wizarding World.

I'm so glad I'm Indian right now. That's a damn good reason for letting them drag me into the heat.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 22:16:53
why do i get the feeling this story is just rumor??? this story just seems really out there... but if it does happen that would be awesome!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 22:19:00
****by them, I meant my parents btw. Born in raised in Seattle, so going to India is not my cup of tea, but that would be very interesting to have another theme park there.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 22:20:16
Maybe not the best place for a Universal Park, but I live in India, so I'm not complaining!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-30 22:43:25
Thats cool, but im just saying why India? I think if they are going to build another one it should be in the U.K. Ive been to The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter in Orlando, and its simply amazing. It certainly lived up to all the hype!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 01:06:03
I liked the thought of having a unique and original Hogwarts and Hogsmeade in the U.S. It makes it feel like it's authentic, ya know? Like the things you buy there you can't get anywhere else. But in the true spirit of Harry Potter, everyone should be able to experience the magic. So I guess I'm up for it if they're really going to build another one. [:
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 03:30:39
Sounds fine to me. Everyone should be able to experience Harry Potter, not just those of us who live in U.S. or U.K.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 04:23:56
I read an article that was given to Universal employees that stated that WWHP was going to be exclusive to Orlando. But, if the India site (which would be rather close to an upcoming Dubai location) wants to pay hefty enough loyalties, Universal will probably change their minds, haha.
Although, I would like to see them try to get the rights to use any Marvel characters. As old as the news is concerning Disney's purchase of the franchise (as well as a Dubai location), it leads me to believe that this is an old rumor and nothing more. However, time will tell, right?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 05:09:25
Why not in the uk?? After all it is a BRITTISH film!!!! It angers me to no end knowing it's in USA why india too? BRING IT TO THE UK!!!!!!!!!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 05:33:42
yes!yes! please let it be true. we indians are hp fans too you know and anil ambani (indian)wants to give us a wizarding world so we'er not complaining.and sofie many indian things are in the uk but you don't here us indians throwing a tantrum
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 06:09:51
Um..what the hell?? Why not the UK?!! Damn this. If it was in the UK more people (including myself, beacause I live in Ireland and it's way too expensive to go to the US or India) could actually go. Plus HP is British after all. Argh, this is annoying. Lucky Indians.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 06:20:13
There isn't enough money in the UK to build a park like the one in America, there obviously is in India. I can't understand the comments about having only one hogwarts in the US, stop being so selfish, it's not the real thing, it's a theme park! Plus all the blue sky isn't very authentic, lol! Don't get me wrong, it'll be amazing when I finally get to visit it, but HP is a world-wide thing, I for one think that is amazing and we should welcome every new park/exhibition with open arms.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 07:24:13
erm India ehh!!! excuse me wat about the UK duh harry potter is British, i know theres one in Florida, i don't mind that. gooo Florida and the UK !! there awesome

THEY CANT! THATS JUST NOT RIGHT! =[
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 07:32:09
They should build it in England. im in the us, so i have orlando, but all the europeans have nothing! And England would be perfect for it!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 08:04:40
But what about us British folk?! Build one in England please! Or at least in Europe?! Please?...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 08:09:31
I'm Indian and I ilve in the US and im glad and i agree with junebug and i also think there should be one in England cause thats where it all started.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 08:09:39
You know, I didn't see any people from the United States expressing indignation when they announced the Harry Potter park in Orlando instead of UK. So why is it that when it's India, most people are just getting so worked up about it? The reason why Harry Potter is so popular and famous is because it's a WORLDWIDE phenomenon! Why should the fandom limit itself to the UK and US? Of course, I would love for there to be a park in the UK, but if there's one in India...what's the big deal? It'll make people there happy, so,...yay for them :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 08:13:19
(obviously, I understand why all the UK fans are upset though, but still...shareee the fandom :D)

OK U GUYS WANNA KNOW THE TRUTH
THIS WILL PROBABLY CHILL ULL DOWN
FIRSTLY WHILE I LIKE THE IDEA A HOGWARTS IN INDIA [SINCE I LIVE HERE] I STILL THINK THE UK WUD BE THE BEST PLACE ...ALTHOUGH INDIA HAS THAT DARK MYSTERIOS WEATHER DURING THE MONSOONS WHICH WUD LOOK BETTER THAN THE US[NOT THE UK]
THE REASON WHY ITS GONNA BE INDIA IS BECAUSE ANIL AMBANI IS A REALLLY REALLLLLY REALLLLLLLLLLY RICH GUY AND HE CAN AFFORD TO BUILD IT WITHOUT ANY GOVERNMENT SUPPORT OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT
SUM1 MENTIONED THEY DONT KNW WHERE IN INDIA THEY CUD BUILD THIS PLACE
TRUST ME ITS ONLY THE BIG CITIES THAT ARE CROWDED INDIA HAS ALOT OF LUSH GREEN LAND AND YEH I CAN PICTURE HOGWARTS ON TOP OF THE HILLS HERE WITH A LAKE THAT HAS A REALLY MISTY VIEW
BUT THIS IS GONNA BE BUILT IN AN UPCOMING CITY OR PROBABLY AMBANI'S CITY WHICH STILL NEEDS TO COME UP ALTHOUGH THE RICHEST PEOPLE LIVE THERE
1 MORE THING .....WHILE INDIANS HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO CRIB ALOT AT TIMES ABOUT BUYING STUFF ....THEY NEVER THINK TWICE ABOUT SPENDING ALOT ON STUFF THEY WANT AND HARRY POTTER AND SOME OF THESE OTHER MOVIES ARE BIG HERE IN INDIA
PEOPLE WOULD SPEND LIKE CRAZY AND ILL BET YA IF THEY DO OPEN A PARK HERE IT'LL BE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN IN THE US
O AND OFCOURSE THERE'S 1 LAST THING
INDIA HAS NEVER BUILT ANYTHING ON TIME
LIKE NEVER EVER EVER
SO YEH FOR ALL THOSE FANS GOING NOOOOOOOOOO
DNT WORRY EVEN IF THEY ANNOUNCE TOMMOROW THAT THEY ARE GONNA BULID A PARK IN INDIA
U GUYS IN THE UK WILL HAVE URE PARK B4 INDIA[IF SUM1 THERE FUNDS THE PROJECT] AND WHO KNOWS MAYBE JAPAN DUBAI AFRICA ALASKA AND MAYBE EVEN MARS WILL
CUZ THATS HOW LONG IT TAKES HERE
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 10:37:21
I think it's a great idea to have Hogwarts all over the world, but I do have two (somewhat) issues:
1 - That, while I completely understand there certainly are a good amount of rich people in India, I can't help but think of the people in India that don't have much money at all. However, I suppose you encounter that anywhere.
2 - That, yes, it's not built in the UK. There probably will be one at some point, and then, when it opens, it will be just as magical.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 10:46:30
LOOKS LIKE UNIVERSAL HAS GOTTEN TONS OF MONEY FROM WWOHP AND IS GETTING GREEDY
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 10:54:20
OH MY FUC*** GOD !!!!! this is an amazing news. thakns to Anil Ambani. :)
And India is perfect place for it, coz there are no big amusement or theme park in India and HP is a craze here. and yeah POPULATION too. :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 11:08:49
India is like the second most populated country in the world. Sorta makes sense.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 12:23:04
I'm all for a park in India, that's awesome for the Indian fans! However I do feel bad for the British fans; HP started in the UK and it must be so difficult for them to see parks being built so far away from them. :( Sorry guys.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 14:08:57
Why not India AND the UK? It'll only take, oh, a few million pounds from investor(s). However, if the popularity of the site in Orlando is any clue, any new HP park would turn a nice profit. I'm sure the HP fans in the UK were hurt that the park opened in the US, so why not aim for the UK, too?
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 14:14:07
i said it would be interesting but certainly not a bad thing if they make it as much like the book as possible. really, its not much different from being the "BRITISH" being built in the US.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 14:19:40
I'm thinking that it would be awesome to actually build all of the schools and places of note in the actual places they are said to be in the books! How awesome would it be to ACTUALLY go to the leaky cauldron in london, then buy a ticket for platform 9 and 3/4 and have a real time train ride to Hogwarts! A theme park...nice....but the real things built in the real places would be mind blowing. Maybe Anil Ambani should invest his money in that because that would be the idea to beat ALL ideas! Makes me wish I was an ultra multi-trillionaire because I would be all over that....taps fingers.....thinking how to become rich and build beauxbatons, durmstrang , Hogwarts, leaky cauldron....diagon alley.....oh what a dream! SOMEONE MUST DO THIS!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 15:02:22
Well, being from Orlando, I can say its always nice to have something in your city that no other city in the world has. Yet, I am glad that more HP fans will get to experience the HP world in person. However, with that said, the article doesn't really say whats going into the park. The wizarding world in India will probably be very different then the one in Orlando. It might be bigger, smaller, or not there at all. I mean two of the three HP rides were just recycled rides that were a;ready in the park. I highly doubt in a new park they would rebuild dragon challenge and flight of the hippagryph.
|

OMG THT WOULD SOOO ROCK!!! I CANT GO 2 FLORIDA BUT NOW I CAN GO WHEN EVR I GO BAK 2 MY COUNTRY...PLZ PLZ PLZ LET IT BE TRUE. Im INDIAN ND PROBABLY THE WORLDS BIGGEST HARRY POTTER FANS... I LUV HARRY POTTER!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I live 1.2 miles from universal Orlando and my high school backs up to the Hogwarts castle , and our marching band takes pride that where the only school where we get told " turn to hogwarts" by our drum majors
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 15:36:01
@ Ashley, ya thats kind of cool watching a football game there while Hogwarts is looming in the background. Almost like a Quidditch match :P
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 17:28:36
@Ashley I know!!! I of course think that our school should stay i unique in that way!, I love looking at the castle from our school! i like to know that its the only one in the world!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 17:54:14
I don't know. I mean I like that there is only one, making it special, but I understand that it is only fair to share the magic of Harry Potter with other fans. I live in the U.S. but I know how I would feel if I lived in Europe or Asia. I'm not sure about building it in India, but this isn't really confirmed yet anyway. I think it would be a good idea to build it in England (I know it's not ideal and such) or Scotland. Hogwarts is in Scotland after all.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 17:55:12
@O0Amy0o That's a great idea, I've always thought it would be awesome to open a 'Hogwarts' hotel right in the middle of Glencoe (Scotland), with Steam train rides to it from London :-) I've been to the site where hogwarts actually is in the films and it's a beautiful location, best scenery in the world ;-)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 17:59:36
Quick question, Do any of you guys know if JK Rowling has ever said if Hogwarts is based on an actual castle? I always think of Eilean Donan but the way it is in the films reminds me more of the European castles, like the ones in Germany.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 19:05:31
India? That's interesting...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-07-31 19:23:32
@Junebug The foundation of the castle (the one from the movie)resembles Edinburgh Castle but Hogwarts itself looks different. It looks just like the chateau de busset in France. However, Rowling says she visualises Hogwarts, in its entirety, to be a huge, rambling, quite scary-looking castle, with a jumble of towers and battlements. Like the Weasley's house, it isn't a building that Muggles could build, because it is supported by magic. Thats the only refrence I have ever heard or read that J.K. has said about the likeness of Hogwarts.
As I'm from the U.S. I have always dreamed of visiting the U.K. you are so lucky to have seen the actual location of Hogwarts! Can you just imagine rolling into Hogsemede and get a ride in a carraige up to the castle and report in at the front desk, reservation for 2, gryffindor tower....that would be awesome!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-01 11:00:43
@Junebug @O0Any0o How about Most St Michel? If it hand the turrets and towers of the Chateau de Busset.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-01 12:08:02
Im far from being able to go to india or UK or right now even orlando, but from my personal opinion this is a great idea. I would like one more in the UK but this sounds good, and i would love if this got built. Maybe i'll go to india someday, who knows!! CANT WAIT FOR DH!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-01 13:55:47
Why India? Because India has some of the wealthiest areas in the world. There is a surprising amount of money over there.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-01 14:04:41
This is great!!! ALL Harry Potter fans should have some sort of Harry Potter-ness in their country, and I'm glad India isn't an exception! :)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-01 16:28:03
It'd be really cool if they did that, and it just sounds so ENORMOUS, but we'll just have to see if its only rumours. But for now, i'm just so eager to go to orlando that going to india sounds impossible. CANT WAIT FOR DH!!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-02 08:36:17
India is always trying to copy off the Western world. It's just their thing to keep up.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-02 13:33:55
@O0Any0o @Hannah, cheers guys, I totally see where it's based on Edinburgh castle. And the entrance does look a lot like chateau de busset. The bridge leading to Most St Michel is what I think of, that's why I think of Eilean Donan. I also think of Neuschwanstein. Although it's a bit too white! If I ever become a millionaire, I WILL build that hotel, lol!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-02 17:29:34
I'm thinking this is a rumor - didn't they try this a few years ago and it got shot down? Anyway, I have Orlando, but I don't see an India theme park getting as much attention. Although the European option is always open...
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-02 20:32:26
@Junebug,Also in Oxford, Christ Church and it’s Great Hall is used as a double for Hogwarts School. Alnwick castle grounds are used as the location for some of Hogwarts' exteriors, for example the scene where Harry and his classmates have their first flying lesson with broomsticks. Lacock Abbey
was the setting for various interior scenes at Hogwarts. Bodleian Library, Duke Humfrey’s Library, and the Divinity School were used as some of the interiors at Hogwarts.Gloucester Cathedral provides the setting for several scenes in the film such as the Girls Lavatory and the Troll scene.

Wowiiiee I'm actually so thrilled I can't express it. Well its great cause Potter fans in India are huge! Its crazy for us, cause we miss out on all the podcast tours, azkatraz and all those awesome events, including the theme park opening. SO I'M JUST GOING TO CROSS MY FINGERS :D WOW :D

And yet there not one being built in England?
Y'know... where the books are set.

@O0Amy0o Cheers, I've been to Christ Church, will have to put the others on my list. I'm trying to visit as many sets as I can since I'm so close by!
@Sophie, technically they are set in Great Britain, not England ;-)
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-03 15:15:34
I think that the uk should get a Harry Potter park before Japan does, the book is set in the uk and JK Rowling is British so therefore the park should be in the UK, it annoys me how America always gets everything!
I desperatly want to go to the park in Florida, but i its going to take me a few years to save up for it as i'll be in uni this year :(
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-03 21:16:04
@Junebug, that so rocks you lucky little bug! Take lots of pictures! And @Charlotte Wall, I'm from America and I totally agree. If any place deserved it first it should have been the UK. I do feel that every place in the world willing to build should be aloud to have one as well. Harry Potter has reached across borders and changed many lives with its message of friendship, bravery, and love that conquers all. So, who is anyone of us to say where it belongs? Harry Potter belongs to the world. Even though I am in America the park seems just as unreachable to me as it does to you. It will be a very long time before I would be able to visit. Maybe years or longer, but, I keep hope alive. So, don't be annoyed there are plenty of us who feel just as left out as you do and we actually live here lol.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-04 03:03:43
I think that there should b a park in Britain first and I also think that if the indian guy carries out with the plans, he should b sued big time! India has already made sooo many Harry Potter scams and have still gotten away with them.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-04 08:17:42
I think everyone's getting carried away...turn the capslock off while typing guys... even if you are very excited...it doesn't look nice :P
According to the article, the Harry Potter theme will be just one of the many themes like Spiderman,Jaws etc.
Its NOT an exclusive Harry Potter Theme Park.
The one at Orlando might perhaps be the only one to use the Harry Potter Theme in so much detail.
:(
I do hope they build Hogwarts and Hogsmeade tho.
This is mainly to capitalize on the interest many have in Western cinema in India :)
Would be fun though I guess...especially as there's no Disneyland here yet ^^
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-04 08:21:39
To everyone whining "WHYY INDIA why not UKK": Realize India is a country with 1.2 BILLION people. Against the UK's 62 million, it MIGHT just be more sound to think that you'll make more money in India.
Also, Ruxandra, you are frankly an idiot for stereotyping like that. Notice how this "indian guy" is paying ROYALTIES to Universal. If that were the case it may seem like Universal is okay with that.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-05 09:56:56
indians don't get anything. we don't have disneyland no great amusment parks and as @aroushka points out we also miss podcast tours and theme park openings so if we get a UNIVERSAL PARK with JAWS,E.T,SPIDERMAN AND HARRY POTTER what's the problem
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-05 17:49:55
That would be awesome for everyone in India! I was just at the Universal and IoA Monday, Tuesday, and Wednsday and I loved it. I feel that everyone should experience it, especially since India doesnt hav a Disney or something.
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-05 17:59:02
Um, hello!
England does not have a Harry Potter, Universal Studios or a Disneyland!
I think it's time England get something!
|
Posted by: - Posted on: 2010-08-09 17:41:51
I may live in Australia, but it still really annoys me that they dont have a HP theme park in England. Harry Potter is based in the U.K, so anyone with common sense would build a HP theme park there.
