OOTP set report in French magazine
In the latest edition of French magazine "Sud Pep's," there is a report on the Order of the Phoenix movie set which features interesting blurbs on the sets and various scenes being shot.
One crew member explained that because the props have to be used over and over, only very durable ones are purchased; as such, nothing is ever thrown away. Also, like the last name of the owner, the interior of Grimmauld Place is described as completely black.
Finally, the article details a poignant scene in which Harry is sitting alone and crying with the wind in his face, presumably shortly after Sirius' demise. In relation to this scene, a reliable source has informed us that Dan listened to depressing music for several days to prepare himself emotionally for this and for a number of other scenes. Thanks to UHP for the tip!

"Title: On the Harry Potter set Radcliffe: "my favourite film"
Caption: Some of the stars study between scenes!
Visiting the Harry Potter set feels like going to Disneyland for the first time: you keep your eyes wide open and your mouth gaping when you see how huge it all is. And yet, Leavesden studios aren't much to look at: thousands of square metres of impersonal warehouses in the middle of an average countryside, an hour's drive away from London. When you enter them, they are actually disappointing: the glue and paint smells have nothing to do with the magic of the movies which sent us into raptures these last four [sic] years. You do need a lot of carpenters, painters and workmen of all kinds to transform the common raw materials into the magnificent sets and terrifying creatures that J.K. Rowling [sic] invented!
The whole place is so big that some people cycle from one set to another. Some even use a golf car... It's 10am, everyone is already in place and two shooting teams are getting busy at the same time. Fortunately, Rupert Grint is available: "There's a relaxation room for when we have to wait. Since I've stopped school and don't need to study, I spend my free time playing ping-pong." The little redhead of the first film has grown into a beanpole, but the same can't be said of Daniel Radcliffe: he's only five foot three. Unlike his schoolmates, the hero didn't have any free time for us. We had to wait until the evening, when the shooting stopped, to get to talk with him.
"My favourite film is the one we're shooting right now. The Harry Potter universe is not at all childish anymore." We were also lucky enough to talk with ravishing Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), the youngest of the trio, but also the most reasonable. Between scenes, she revises her lessons, and is cautious about her future career. Sirius Black's House The sets range for grandiose to bare. In the fifth episode, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", the young wizard visits his godfather's family house. Just like his surname, Sirius Black's house is completely... black!
But the most stunning part when you go in is that everything is real: forks, chandeliers, dust... "Since the sets might be needed again in another episode, we only use high quality materials, and never throw anything away; all the set elements from the previous movies are stored in numbered boxes." Next door, there are large spaces covered with blue fitted carpet: it's the blue key, used as a background for CGI. Quidditch matches are filmed there, for example.
The actors sit on mechanically-driven broomsticks, and the Quidditch stands are added later on by computer. 90% shot in the studio Surprisingly, 90% of the scenes in the Harry Potter movies are filmed in the studio. For instance, we saw the shooting of a scene set in the countryside surrounding Hogwarts, entirely filmed indoors. Daniel Radcliffe, sitting on a mound, has just learned that one of his loved ones is dead. The wind blowing in his hear, tears flow out of his eyes. The scene is heartrending... but shot indoors, in an annex to the studio which looks like a bunker! It hardly matters: on the big screen, it will seem 100% real!

first...Don't speak french, sorry!
i don't speak french too, just german and english. sorry
err Bonjour lol ? Is that french ..
Well you have to get your motivation from somewhere and depressing music is actually a good idea. I personally would have sniffed a big pile of onions right before the seen, but Dan's way is less hard on the eyes. #2, well alright!
yeah at last news
I speak a bit of French :)
This is crazy! French French French! Definitely wish I knew some of that good stuff!
I really hope Dan's crying skills have become even better since the last movie... oh, I want to read that report!
I NEED to learn FRENCH!!!!!
Meh ... don't speak French, but speak Spanish & Russian! :-)
Dan gets all pissy when he cries. He needs to show emotion without getting pissed off so much!
wow... can't wait to see the set. i think dan is great with emotions, he is only a kid afterall... he has def improved since POA anyway...
Hopefully someone can translate this article so we can have the full scoop! I also hope that Dan is emotionally cryaing with sadness not anger like in past movies! He seems to always be angry and take away from the seen by being angry instead of upset/saddened by what is happening!
Sorry, I can't read French. Just barely Spanish and I'm learning ASL. My brother took French for two years. Maybe I'll ask him...if he's in a good mood. You seen, he doesn't like Harry Potter. You know, the magic and all, and he refuses to see my point of view. So, wish me luck!
thats called true dedication Dan Rad... I'm dying to watch this movie. making the top 20 after a long time...
Dan is really puttin his heart into this role and I admire him for that. This movie is gonna be great. I can't wait!!!
But sad songs?... I mean honestly, I don't see that helping much. Ok, i admit, some songs can break your heart, but wouldn't it be better for example to watch sad movies... tragedies or sth. ? or even read one of the last two harry potter books... now THAT can make you cry.
I kinda know some french, but after looking at the article, it's probably not enough. i didnt make it past the first sentence, and now im mad at myself. anyway, i just hope dan doesnt get all depressed and stay that way, cause life sucks when you're depressed.
its gutting we have to wait 9 months for it to come out. Hopefully we will have some tease clips soon and some photos of the set *keeps fingers crossed*
aww i love that word *poignant* poignant poignant poignant i *Hope* dans performance is *poignant* it has to be sirius's death is such a key event... lol the house of black is described as very BLACK lol. not too black i hope, cuz then we wont be able to see whats going on XD
My french is OK since i'm french ;-) Two funny things demonstrating that the reporter did not read any of those books. 1/ She calls JKR J.K. Rowlands !! 2/ She writes 'Sirius Black' is totally black, thinking 'Sirius Black' is the name of Sirius' house :-)
parlez vous englai?
sad music - bring on the radiohead!! Oh and Springz - i think dan is getting much better, compare POA 'he was their friend' crying (which i thought was a little overacted) and GOF crying which i felt was just right and really portrayed how he'd kept it together for so long at the graveyard, and now that was over the combination of adrenaline and the fact he has cedric in his arms... man it was just right. I've been a victim of crime, once the 'crime' itself is over, you can't help crying and crying and crying - its a natural human reaction, i related to harry at that point. Mind you i thought the whole Dumbledore 'did you put your name in the goblet of fire' moment in the trophy room was also appropriate and good so probably everyone will ignore me! :D
can we have a translation of the article plz XD. it would be very helpful.
Well...im studying french @ school, but it seems that the 1 yr in french i've done so far isnt very useful, but i can make out certain bits...can any french person please post a translation on the comments board/email to MN ? thanks, that would be really helpful to a lot of people
Thank you, Dan! Actually, I imagined the interior to be more gray, like it was nearly black once, but then the paint faded after decades of being unused. Mostly dusty, really. Dusty gray.
Oh my god, I'm so AMERICAN!! I spelled "grey" with an "A"!!! Arrrggghh!!!
For some reason that's one of my favourite parts of the series, where Harry kind of wanders around the castle and grounds and he cries at the lake. I hope they don't have Ron and Hermione in the scenes because that would ruin it. Also, I'm PRAYING that the moment with Luna is in the movie. For me, it's basically the only reason for her being in the book, well...not the ONLY reason, but the main reason, and I think what she knows about death and maybe the veil will be important in book 7.
ugh, they wrote "J.K Rowland" COME ON!!
Here is my (very poor) translation based on a translation from the website Babel Fish. To visit the filming of Harry Potter is a little like going to Disneyland for the first time: you blink your eyes and open your the mouth to see the magnitude. The studios of Leavesden really arenât all: thousands of meters of anonymous warehouse installations are at an unspecified location within an hour of London. When you enter, you are disappointed; nothing in the general set area evokes the magic of the films which have transported us for four years. The truth is that the movies need many artists, painters, and workmen of all kinds to transform the common premises into the splendid décor and alarming creatures from the imagination of J.K. Rowling. The [movie set] is so gigantic that certain members of the production get around by bycicle or golf cart. At 10 am, everyone is already at the set and two scenes are already being filmed simultaneously. Fortunately, Rupert Grint is available [to talk to us]: âThereâs time to relax now; we have to wait. As Iâve graduated from school and donât have to study, I spend my free time playing ping pong,â says the actor who plays Ron Weasley. If the small redhead of the early movies became very tall, the same doesnât hold true for Daniel Radcliffe, who hasnât passed [60 meters? Help me out. Iâm American]. Contrary to his comrades, the hero of the saga will not have much time to to devote to us. It will be necessary for us to wait until the beginning of the eveningâthat is to say, the end of filmingâto exchange some words with him. âMy understanding of the film is that things are becoming hard. The universe of Harry Potter doesnât have any more childishness [in it].â We also converse with the charming Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), the youngest of the cast but also the most [it says âreasonableâ, but I have a feeling this should translate to something else like âsmartâ]. Between filming, the girl studies for her courses ...
Well, i found a free translation website the english translation was : "Visit the shooting of Harry Potter, this is a little as to go to disneyland for the first time: one ecarquille the eyes and one opens the mouth in front of the immensitè of the thing. " As you can see there are a few french words that didn't translat, it cant be a godd translator, obviously... I suppose it's better than not knowing anything at all that's being said... If anyone wants to hear the rest of it just let me know via the coments plz, i'll check back
Uggh. I'm going to be crying during that scene; just you wait and see! Everyone's going to make fun of me. Sirius is/was my favorite character! =(
Translation [] indicates approxiamte translation. Visiting the set of the Harry Potter movie is a bit like going to Disneyland for the first time : one opens wide eyes and gape at the immensity of it. Yet, the Leavesden studio [don't look inviting]: thousands square meters of anonymous warehouse laid in the countryside, a small hour from London by car. Once inside, one is even deceived: in the smells of glue and paint, nothing call up the magic of the movies which have moved us for 4 years. Indeed, many cabinet-makers, painters, and workers of all kind are needed to transform raw material into magnificent decors and terrifying creatures as imagined by J. K. Rowlands! [SIC] The place is so huge that some crew members cross the corridors with a bycycle or a golf-car... At 10AM, everybody is already set and two filming crews work simultaneously. Luckily, Rupert Grint is available: "There is a recreation room for those moments when we have to wait. Since I stopped school and I have nothing to study, I spend my time here playing table-tennis", says he who plays Ron Weasley. Although the little redhead of the beginnings has become a lanky guy, things are not the same for Daniel Radcliffe, who doesn't rise above 1.60 meters. Contrary to his mates, the hero of the saga won't have a lot of time for us. We'll have to wait for the beginning of the evening -- ie, the end of the filming day -- to exchange some words with him. "My favorite film is the one we are filming now. The Harry Potter universe has no infantile traits anymore." We were also lucky to get a conversation with the enchanting Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), the youngest cast, but also the most reasonable. [I take a break, the rest of the translation later...]
Whoa, isobel's is way better than mine. I think she must actually speak French. Read hers.
ok, i see there's no point now, isobel posted a transalation already...thanks!
woa thanks for the translations guys!! "Listning to depressing music" LOL... man... the things actors do to do something right!!!
im doing French in High school:- Visiting the set of Harry Potter is a little like going to Disneyland for the first time. You stare wide-eyed and You open your mouth in front of the immensity of the thing. nevertheless, Leavesdon studios AAARGH I REALLY CANT UNDERSTAND THE REST.
Speaking of the viel.....(Maybe I want Sirius back with Harry now that Dumbledore is gone), but I was listening to the Audio books and when Harry is with Luna talking about what happened Luna states that there are dead people behind the viel, then Harry offers to look for her stuff and Luna replies....No that's okay, they will come back, they always come back in the end. Sorry I don't have a page number but for those with the audio book, it's the last CD on track 11. I noticed that a couple of days after JKR said 1 person got a reprieve (which I looked up in the dictionary and one of the definitions was: To postpone or CANCEL the punishment of). So let me know what you think about my theory.
hey thanx pple 4 da translation....i thot ill havta learn french 2 read dat article...lol.... ;)....
Like someone said before that's called true dedication Dan. I'm happy he plays Harry, he works really hard. Like the report says he doesn't even have a free moment until the end of the day. springz, I think that's what the previous movies needed, so in my opinion he did great, and he does even better with every new movie. I'm happy they have included a scene after Sirius dies. But, what if someone has not read the books? if they read these things they will be so spoiled!
hey dats a pretty gud theory AGUADALUPITA.....v must debate on it...y dont u put it on da forums??..gud work der
Thats dan for you. I hope his crying skills are a lot better than they were in GoF, he was pretty bad at it.
wow thanks for the translation isobel !!! "Dan sitting alone, crying with the wind on his face." Nice image but it makes me feel sad :(
Dam I had the translation done here on the comment board whan I pressed ctrl+w, instead of shift+w, which closed my mozilla tab. So here is my second try: To visit the HP set, it's a bit like going to disneyland the first time: you gape at the immensity of the place. Nevertheless, the leavesden studios don't catch the eye: thousands of square meters of anonymous warehouse in the coutryside at one hour from London. When you set foot in it, deception strikes you as nothing in the smell of paint or wood recalls the magic of the movies. Many workers are needed to turn the raw materials into magnificents sets or scary creatures like the ones imagined by JKR. The palce is so huge that some of the production members are using bikes or golf cars to travel around. At 10 o'clock, everyone is already working as two filming crews are working at the same time. Luckily, Rupert was available for comment: we have a room to spend our free time, as I'm done with school and don't need to study anymore, I spend my time playing ping-pong. The Ron weasley actor has grown a lot since the first movies, but the same isn't true for Daniel who doesn't reach 1m60. Unlike the others, Daniel hasn't much spare time, we had to wait till the beginning of the night(end of filming) to exchange words with him: this is my favorite movie so far, the HP universe is absolutely not childish anymore. We were also lucky to speak with the charming Emma Watson(Hermione Granger), youngest of the casting{the author probably means the trio} and also the more reasonable. Betwwen the shoots, she studies and approches her actress career with the greatest care. The house of black. In the fifth movie, HP has to go in his godfather house. As its owner, the interior of the house is completly black. But what stroke us the more when visiting the set is that evrything is real, from the forks to the chandelier, even the dust. " As the sets may be reused, we are only using the best materials and we never thr...
cool! thanks to all the people who gave translations. i agree with mrs._finnegan about dans crying ability
LMAO dan had to listen 2 depressing music for several days rofl hehehe
funny that it is for once an article about Harry Potter in French which fans want to translate in English. For us(French Speakers) it always the contrary (for the simple reason that almost everything concerning Harry Potter is in English)...lol.I'm French(from Belgium, a small country near France) but my English is not enough precise to allow me to translate this article. ps this article comes from a Belgian magazine (Peps, a supplément from the neewspaper "La Meuse"(it is the name of a river) ) For AGUADALUPITA : Jo means (perhaps) in this case to postpone.Others opinions?Anyway we will see in book seven (of course).
... throw away anything, everything is packed in numerotated boxes." Besides that there are large places with blue floor, it's the blue key, a background needed for special effects. For example that's were the quidditch scenes are shot, the actors sit on broom attached on mecanical arms to move them around, the background is added afterwards by computer. 90% shot in studio Unlike what is largely believed, 90% of the pictures shown in the HP movies were taken inside. We had the proof of it this afternoon as we watched a scene supposedly taking place in the countryside around Hogwarths. Dan sitting on a hill just learned the loss of someone close, crying, his hair in the wind. The scene is breathtaking,... but shot inside in a place that looks like a bunker, but don"t worry, on screen it'll look just great. My translation is a little patchy, but you should get all the information from it alright.
Oh my...that's hilarious! Dan listened to emo music to bring out his emo-ness? That's so great. I wonder if a certain someone will come upon him while he's crying and try and comfort him. *Shakes head*
i don't want to read the translations that are put in here until the one that ciaran will show us it out (?). i want to read it all once because i don't have much time, but if i would have wanted a quickly translation i'd be very VERY happy, thank you guys who are doing that :D
