Yates estimates OOTP running time
Empire magazine's latest edition included a three-page spread on the Order of the Phoenix movie, where director David Yates spoke about the length of the film. "The book's huge, but it actually distills quite easily. That said, I've shot a movie that's probably over three hours, so I'll have to lose 45 minutes in the edit."

Also, Imelda Staunton (Umbridge) has been trying for some time to get involved in the franchise and joked: "Well, actually I was rather insulted they'd never asked."

Finally, producer David Heyman praised Evanna Lynch as Luna: "She's an obsessive Potter fan who'd actually had correspondence with Jo Rowling. When she was cast Jo rang me up because she just couldn't believe it - from her letters she said, 'She is Luna.'"

You can view scans of this spread here, thanks to reader Elle!

I Just Wish it is Going to be L-o-n-g! Cause i dont care how long it is i would watch it even if it was 10 hours long!! Well Good Luck with Everything else!

Posted by Kaylad Oct 29th 2006

I agree with what the poster named LadyM said. We should give Yates a chance at this movie. Not all books that are turned into movies can be as long as the books people u have to understand that seriously. I know u wish that the movie could be longer and I know that u want every single thing to be in the movie but it just can't happen that way. I am a Huge Harry Potter fan weather people think I am or not. I dont' have all the books but I have read 3 of them and I absolutly love the movies. I don't hate them no matter what they do to them or what they leave out cause I am glad that they brought a story so wonderful like Harry Potter to the big screen and the actors and actress do an wonderful job at makin the characters come to life. I am just manly expressing my feelings on this subject of the movies. I know some of you fans will probably yell at me for saying some of this but what I say is true and I do wish it could be 3 hours myself but I think it will be 2 hours just about.

nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!! (enraged) they can't edit 45 minutes!!!!!!!! i agree with jo i think she will make a good luna.

Posted by Mariami Oct 29th 2006

Don't lose 45 minutes, don't lose 45 minutes, don't lose 45 minutes, people love movies over 3 hours, people love movies over 3 hours, people love movies over 3 hours *hipnotizes*... Seriously. People survived Lord Of The Rings, Titanic, why can't they survive a Harry Potter movie?

Posted by LindseyBindsey Oct 29th 2006

Mariami 5, maybe because HP is considered to be a kids movie? i don't know... lol I couldn't sit through the LOTR movies...

Posted by gandalfxj9 Oct 29th 2006

A while back they made a petition to to move the Autstrailian release date of OOTP from september to july...after they achieved 2000 comments Warner Bros. agreed! Well, were doing the same thing for this and we need you fellow harry potter fans to help us out! To sign the petition go here; http://www.pet itionspot.com/petitions/H arry_Potter_Order_of_Phoe nix

Posted by Boogie_Shoes Oct 29th 2006

Grr...even 3 1/2 isn't long enough to condense all the wonder that is order of the phoenix. so 2 hours certainly won't do.

Posted by LindseyBindsey Oct 29th 2006

I will not be signing that petition... they moved the south african release date of POA but there was no petition

Posted by gandalfxj9 Oct 29th 2006

If you want harry potter and the OotP to be over 3 hours please sign this petition ; http://www.petitionspot .com/petitions/Harry_Pott er_Order_of_Phoenix

Posted by Holly_Potter Oct 29th 2006

I just signed the petition *crosses fingers*

Posted by LindseyBindsey Oct 29th 2006

*sigh* i don't think that petition is gonna do any good

Posted by gandalfxj9 Oct 29th 2006

I know this petition seems kind of immature but the australian release date started out just like this but once it got about 100 it really started to go! I would be really surprised if this petition worked but it diffinatly WON'T if nobody signs....so please please pretty please sign!!!!

Posted by Why_Here Oct 29th 2006

The Australian Release date was changed by fan outrage, yes, but that was a minor thing that is very easy to do. With keeping scenes in or taking scenes out...a 3+ hour movie isn't very likely sure, they are occasional success with movies(Titantic is a prime example). It'd hurt Warner Bros. in the end to make a long movie. Warner Bros. are making the movies for their own profit, not for the fans.

Posted by leonidasofsparta Oct 29th 2006

If peter jackson had done to lord of the rings, what jo allows done to the potter books, the fans would have lynched him. Literally. Based on just words alone jacksons movies were 3 times longer than G.O.F.. Jo unfortunately sold her franchise too cheaply with no creative control to all the movies detriment, and if book 7 isn't absolutely spectacular the movie franchise may start to lose audience. G.O.F. could have been twice as long and not lost a dime .

I understand that you want everything from the book to be in the movie, but it simply cannot be done. I understand that some of you could sit through a three hour Harry Potter film, but the majority of the audience can't. People have schedules to follow in this busy world, so three hours is inconvienient. Also, because people are very impatient, you have to keep them happy throughout the whole movie if you want the money from their ticket. Keeping an audience entertained for three hours is very difficult. It worked for Lord of the Rings because those films had alot of action, battle sequences, suspense, and eye candy(and by that, I mean the scary monster Shelob, the stunning white City of Minus Tirith, The spooky green Cirith Ungol, and the beauty and elegence of Rivendel. Oh yeah, and the large number of hot actors.). It was the content of the movie that kept the audience captivated, and OotP just doesn't have that sort of appeal. Save for the dementor attack, there isn't any action until the end, so they have to make sure they don't put too much in the middle. And the most eye candy we get is the effects of various spells, which seem more odd than beautiful or stunning.

Posted by CrookshanksGranger Oct 29th 2006

In order to make more money, WB should release an extended version DVD of OotP a few months after the orignial DVD release, with the 45 minutes added into the movie. If not, the DVD special features better have a TON of deleted scenes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by mgeiche Oct 29th 2006

Note to David: Don't cut the movie!!! We HP fans WANT a 3+ hour long movie. We always have.

Posted by GorgeousGinnyxoxoxox Oct 29th 2006

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't cut the movie! We'll live if it's over 3 hours!!!! CrookshanksGranger: I totally agree with u, that would be so awesome to have an extended version of HP! They should so do that!

Posted by Pidge Oct 29th 2006

i would rather see a long, accurate movie than a short, drastically different one. in fact, the longer the better. why 45 minutes? why not... 15? 3 hours is perfect, id prefer four though, but i guess the fans dont matter :(

Posted by flippinfool13 Oct 29th 2006

Cool!!!!! the luna KNEW JKR????!!!! AND is an obsessive fan??? This is a dream come true!!!! I heard she even made her radish eyerings and bottle cap necklace!!! I cant beleive jkr said she WAS Luna. SO cool..*envys her*.

Posted by MCR_Potter_Fan Oct 29th 2006

Haha, 3-4 hour HP film. Personally, I would rather have maybe 2 1/2 hours... Or 2 hours 45 minutes. SOmething like that, a 3 1/3 film I'd have to pass. Even if it is Potter :'(

Posted by ronny713 Oct 29th 2006

i would sit through an HP movie of just about any length, as would what many consider any "true" fan, but i suppose the reason they shorten it is because, unlike pearl harbor and titanic, this is basically a kid's movie. and little kids (and their parents who have to take them, might not be able to sit still). still their annoying fault, but whatever. hopefully, all will be on deleted scenes and too much IMPORTANT stuff won't be cut out.

Posted by ellopoppet7hp Oct 29th 2006

wow that really sounds like a whole lot of movie.... but hey, more movie to love!!

Posted by Pinkslips Oct 29th 2006

OH COME ON! Have some sense in ya! 45 MINUTES?! Let me tell you it would be 45 LOVELY minutes that is. Sheesh...talk about thick-headed something..(I couldn't think of a word...)

Posted by esagrero Oct 29th 2006

They should leave it at 3 hours!! Why don't they just try it?

Posted by Doxy Oct 29th 2006

But on Jo's comment, i watched the interview with Evanna Lynche and it's really true, she literally IS Luna!

Posted by amy4dan1327 Oct 29th 2006

they should just keep it at 3 hours!!! i know i wouldn't mind!!!!!! oh, and today is my 15th birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! so u ppl should whish me happy birthday, only if u want to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

peter jackson and LOTR did everything right... 3 to 3 and half hour movie in theaters, 3 and half to 4 and half hour extended edition.. even though they cut a ton out, it didn't feel like they lost any of the important stuff like the HP movies do.

Posted by HRHFOREVER Oct 29th 2006

I want a looooonnnnnnng movie! I don't want them to cut anything out of it. I totally agree about the LOTR thing. Peter Jackson's movies were longer than 3 hours, and they still made a HUGE amount of money, so why can't the HP movies be 3 hours or longer? I would still go see them, and I bet all you true Harry Potter fans out there would too. Right? Wouldn't you love a 6 hour movie about Harry Potter?

Posted by Matrinka Oct 29th 2006

You know, now that I've put more thought into it... I don't mind a shortened film being in theatres IF and ONLY IF they release ALL the extra / deleted footage on DVD, strung together as a movie, not just extra scenes. You know, a theatrical release and a director's cut in the same set. It would be lovely. That way everyone is satisfied; us obsessive fans and those with the attention spans of humming birds.

Posted by gandalfxj9 Oct 29th 2006

KEEP SIGNING THE PETITION!!!!! PLEASE!! WERE DOING GREAT SO FAR!!!! OUR GOAL IS TO GET TO 100 BY MIDNGHT! WE CAN DO IT! LOL

Posted by FilmMagic Oct 29th 2006

Though I really want the film to be 3 hours long, if Heyman really only shot a 3 hour film than it's almost impossible for the film to be 3 hours long after editing. It's all about keeping only what is needed to tell the story and losing what slows down the pacing. If a movie is 3 hours long when it hits theaters you can bet that when editing began it was around 3 1/2 to 4 hours long. However, I wish WB would take a note from Peter Jackson's page and release Extended Editions of the Harry Potter films with deleted scenes edited back into the film.

Posted by chaibabachai Oct 29th 2006

**Who wants to start a PETITION to make them keep those 45 minutes? I would have absolutely no problem sitting there that long and I'm already sure that I will be seeing it more than once anyways. Like you guys have already noted, Titanic was 3 hours long! and this is HARRY POTTER. They will not lose money, I think we can guarantee that...**

Posted by FilmMagic Oct 29th 2006

^^I mean Yates, I have no idea where the last name "Heyman" came from. Sorry about that.

Posted by gandalfxj9 Oct 29th 2006

i already started a petition if you want to sign go here; http://www.petitionspot.c om/petitions/Harry_Potter _Order_of_Phoenix

...-_- Maybe Heyman came from the same article? Geez, I shouldn't have stayed up all night.

Posted by Wierdgirl5834 Oct 29th 2006

45 MINUTES! HAVE THEY GONE MAD! THAT IS NOT FAIR! STUPID DIRECTOR! STUPID EDITOR! STUPID SCREENWRITER! THEY'RE MESSING UP THE WHOLE MOVIE! GRRRR!

Posted by DarkFoot Oct 29th 2006

You guys he said over 3 hours it could be like 3 and half, or more.

Posted by Wierdgirl5834 Oct 29th 2006

Well people, let's not just stand here for hours on mugglenet agonizing this piece of terrible news, let's do something about it!!!!!!!! So anyone got an idea, cuz I really don't know what to do about it?

Posted by uknowho Oct 29th 2006

if they made a 20 hour movie with EVERYTHING in it...i would so watch it. well, as long as i got popcorn refills.

Posted by bwof Oct 29th 2006

I am really doubtful that this film will be terrific because I had waited so mush for GoF and cause my expectations were so high I got disappointed so now I try not to think it will be that good. The voldemort scene could have been so much better and voldemort´s face looked so fake. But still, how weird it ever sounds; I can´t wait for the trailer! :) Shame it isn´t longer than 2 h and 15 min...

Posted by Lenore Oct 29th 2006

What a pity. 45 whole minutes! Oh well, we'll get them in delated scenes on the DVD, anyway. And he said OVER three hours. For all we know, he could be cutting it down TO three hours, exactally.

Posted by olives548 Oct 29th 2006

45 minutes? you know what could happen in a whole 45 minutes? a whole load of stuff! come on...but yeah they have to take in mind that not all die hard fans are gonna be in the cinema watching the film..there's gonna be just like other people watching it..some not as big as fans as we are. but either way...im dissappointed that hes deciding to cut 45 minutes..i was sad enough when they said cut Weasley is King...oh well. We better see that 45 minutes on the DVD!

Posted by Wierdgirl5834 Oct 29th 2006

Whoever did the petition, on petitionspot, I signed it!

Posted by Topdogpenny Oct 29th 2006

45mins! WAT! leave it in, leave it in!

Posted by chillcat Oct 29th 2006

that is too short.. but if it s gonna be short, it better be a reeeeaaaly good movie, OR ELSE!!!

Posted by pigwidgeon Oct 29th 2006

ARGH! i don't like the sound of "but it actually distills quite easily". and there is nothing wrong with a film being over 3 hours long! The best film ever in my opinion is return of the king, which was 3 hours and 22 minutes. Looks like this film is going to be another butchering job.

Posted by chillcat Oct 29th 2006

i agree.. i mean, LOTR was all three hours long, and it got A+on all threee, and it got 11 nominations!! THats verbalproof...
