Yates estimates OOTP running time
Empire magazine's latest edition included a three-page spread on the Order of the Phoenix movie, where director David Yates spoke about the length of the film. "The book's huge, but it actually distills quite easily. That said, I've shot a movie that's probably over three hours, so I'll have to lose 45 minutes in the edit."

Also, Imelda Staunton (Umbridge) has been trying for some time to get involved in the franchise and joked: "Well, actually I was rather insulted they'd never asked."

Finally, producer David Heyman praised Evanna Lynch as Luna: "She's an obsessive Potter fan who'd actually had correspondence with Jo Rowling. When she was cast Jo rang me up because she just couldn't believe it - from her letters she said, 'She is Luna.'"

You can view scans of this spread here, thanks to reader Elle!

That is DUMB!!!! LOTR and Star Wars, and Titanic were all EXTREMLY long. Harry Potter is worthy to be with those movies. That is why the movies, dont turn out so well cause they have to cut SO MUCH out. They should put the 45 min back in with the DVDs so all the fans can watch the whole thing.

Posted by diana88 Oct 29th 2006

iy's not 2.15 long...it said that they have to cut 45 minutes because it's over 3 hours... so it's not 3 hourss...it's more...so probably the final movie will be about 2.30 long...or 2.45...we never know.. Although....it's no problem for me....4 hours...i still want to watch it badly..

Posted by stjimmythesheep Oct 29th 2006

I'd LOVE a three-hour movie!!!! They should keep it that long!!!!

Posted by aloha_angel Oct 29th 2006

EVERYONE: He said it's OVER 3 hours. Therefore, if the movie is, say, 3 hours and 55 minutes, then the movie we see in theaters will be 3 hours and 10 minutes. Additionally, how do you know he's going to cut EXACTLY 45 minutes off? What if he cuts 30 minutes off? Then we have a movie that is 3 hours and 25 minutes. I don't know about you, but I'd be happy with a movie that long.

Posted by dobbyroxmysox Oct 29th 2006

yay!!i cant wait till the movie comes out!!!!!!!sux that he has to take out 45 mins but u do what you gotta do

Posted by Witchy_Woman Oct 29th 2006

ONLY TWO HOURS AND FIFTEEN MINUTES?!?! WHY DAVID YATES? WHY?

Posted by Potter_You_Rotter Oct 29th 2006

The movie should at least be 2:45 if not longer. I hope it is longer personally. As to add to the list of movies that are over 3 hours, have any of you watched the movie DUNE. That movie is 295 min. or 4 hrs 55 min. It spans over 3 DVDs and is a great movie.

That must be so cool for Evanna & JK Rowling. I can't wait to see how Luna comes to life!!! Luna is ridiculiously hilarious and reminds me so much of me and it's interesting hearing Evanna compare herself to Luna. I can't wait for 5th movie! I hope it is like seriously long but it'll be like similar to the other movies. In the DVD they should put everything on and make it like hours long!

Posted by flippinfool13 Oct 29th 2006

well, i'm glad its not going to be a short movie!!!!!!!

Posted by Marsie Oct 29th 2006

Seriously.. 2 hours and 15 minutes?!? Are they crazy?! Have they read the book? This sucks.. :( I would've thought they'd atleast stretch it to 2 hours and 30 or 45 minutes.. *sighs*

Posted by froop Oct 29th 2006

My hope is if they cut the 45 minutes from the theratrical release that they take a leaf from the LOTR movies and release an extended edition on DVD so we get to see all the extra scenes.

I agree with everyone who is demanding a long HP movie by reminding everyone about how long LOTR: ROTK was and how much money it made. I hope no one at WB is stupid enough to think that a 3 1/2 hour long HP movie won't make money because IT WILL! As far as the edits go, please remember that it's not necessarily the fault of David Yates if he cuts too much. I don't think he will get to decide on his own how long his film will be. IMO, their are three essential elements of this story: 1. Umbridge's cruelty towards Harry and her hunger to do whatever the Ministry wants in order to further her career; 2. Harry's despair at losing Sirius; and 3. The big battle at the Ministry. It is essential that Harry and Sirius's relationship be properly established in the film. Otherwise, the audience will not understand why Harry's so upset at Sirius's death.

Posted by ginny53 Oct 29th 2006

This is off topic but do you know how on the side of all the Harry Pooter books it says YEAR 1 or YEAR 2...up to 6. HArry says that he wasnt going back to Hogwarts do you think it will still say YEAR 7??

Posted by gandalfxj9 Oct 29th 2006

I AM SO MAD RIGHT NOW!!! I MEAN WHAT WAS THE POINT OF EVEN FILMING THE 45 MINUTES IF THERE JUST GOING TO DELETE IT AND WILL HAVE TO WAIT TILL DVD OR EVEN AFTER TO SEE THESE NEW SCEANS!!!! ALSO OOTP WAS THE LONGEST BOOK IN THE SERIES....ACTUALLY ONE OF THE LONGEST BOOKS EVER CREATED!!! ANYTHING UNDER 3 HOURS IS A TOTAL RIP OFF!!!!! SO PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION ABOUVE!!!

Posted by ginny53 Oct 29th 2006

I CANT BELEIVE THEY ARE CUTTING IT SHORTER...THEY SPENT THE TIME FILMING, WHY NOT USE IT????????

Posted by Ashley Oct 29th 2006

45 minutes? That's a bit ridiculous. I understand cutting 15 minutes out. I mean, The Departed was 2 hours 30 minutes along, and everyone loved staying to see that. But 45? Don't like that. If they do cut 45 minutes, they should at least include them in the DVD like LOTR had.

Posted by braders101 Oct 29th 2006

shouldnt do the edit... leave it how it is... cnt wait for the film.. GUNNA BE WICKED eccited to see luna.. haha brad

Posted by futuremrsradcliffe Oct 29th 2006

Aww man they can't do that! 45 minutes taken off! Oh well I can't do anything about it (though I wish I could). anyways, it is good that they have stopped (or almost) filming. that means that they are half way, or less, done with it. YAY!

Posted by harrys_wand Oct 29th 2006

lillink1222: nice optismism! i tht idea

Posted by pudella Oct 29th 2006

Please keep the movie as long as possible, but whatever gets cut please include in the DVDs!

Posted by HPfanatic71 Oct 29th 2006

I WANT A 3 HR MOVIE!!!! :D

Posted by MaryFair Oct 29th 2006

even if this movie was 5 hours...i would still go see it!!! why cut the running time???

Posted by aethos Oct 29th 2006

It's disappointing to hear they will cut so much. I'd prefer they make it two movies much along the lines of Kill Bill. While I too am convinced not everything from the book needs to be in to make a good movie, I do think that if you feel it is worth shooting those 45 minutes, it's worth fighting to get them in! They'd better not mess up the scene where Fudge et. al. take on Dumbledore however! It is my all-time favorite scene in the entire series thus far! No added drama. No weird effects. Just WHAM... that's Dumbledore's style! :)

Come on people..cut the kiss? How long can they Harry and Cho kiss for? What? Three seconds?

Posted by gandalfxj9 Oct 29th 2006

UPDATE; ok so we've got 66 comments now!! good job guys! keep the signatures coming! were doing great!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Arinia Oct 29th 2006

Agreed Pinkslips! Cut the kiss! Ergghh 45 minutes cut? My hope for this movie just went down the drain....again. I bet you this movie is going to be all about Cho and Harry and nothing about the important stuff! BLEHHHH! darn you Hollywood! Stop appealing for the "casual" viewers and start trying to put some effort in! Those casual viewers should pick up the book and read it before going to see the movie that's what I think! I mean, I can understand that you have to edit some stuff but so much could happen in 45 minutes! And besides, cutting it down so much will NOT do the book justice, sorry. And what is this about it's "easy to distill" Are you kidding me! Blehhhhh!!! *end rant*

Posted by athosmr Oct 29th 2006

I'm still getting the XML error message & I don't have a MAC. Does anyone know how to solve this? I had the HBP countdown & it worked fine.

Posted by doctor23 Oct 29th 2006

Leave it at 3 hrs. If it is at that length theres a better chance you did the thing correctly

Posted by suffaval Oct 29th 2006

Too short to believe.

UPDATE; Ok people we hit 73 signauteres...that's not bad! But we need more so please go to http://www.petitionspot.c om/petitions/Harry_Potter _Order_of_Phoenix

Posted by Josh06 Oct 29th 2006

If the movie would have an extended version sales would rocket up pre slaes would go up too. I dont understand why they have never had an extended version yet. A directors cut edition or something would be nice I thought GoF could of used one I still enjoyed it though. I just think WB has really given us the short end and they just rely on us to come back each film and they dont worry but they should.

Posted by Arinia Oct 29th 2006

gandalfxj9 I can't seem to get to the link =( It's not working.

Posted by Grey Oct 29th 2006

Is it to much to ask for for them to put the uncut vertion of the movie on the DVD?

Posted by ryanthirkill Oct 29th 2006

I had really hoped Mr. Yates would not make the mistake of trying to condense the story too much, but it seems he has. The last two directors tried the same thing and failed misreably. The parts of the story he'll probably take out are going to be the parts that make the story interesting. I know he can't include every minute of the story, but 2 hours and 15 mins? He's kidding, right?!?!

Posted by oldest3 Oct 29th 2006

NO kidding! Two hours and 15 mins is a long movie, but common, and with the fact that they're totally getting rid of Dobby in the movies totally sucks, but yes this book will be much easier to condense then the fourth one was!

Posted by earwax Oct 29th 2006

Well considering they are cutting dobby and quidditch this isn't surprising. And I agree seeing Harry and Sirius brooding is sort of boring, along with cleaning number 12, and I have a feeling they are going to cut the giant storyline for the most part.

Posted by Lady_Delphinea Oct 30th 2006

Well... yes it sucks... but remember... the trailer is due out soon sooooo we can all have a big fest of discussing/arguing about it then....

Posted by diannetic Oct 30th 2006

well, first of all, cool layout, mugglenet and also the countdown...AWESOME!!i don't care if they wiil take away 45 minutes....as long as i can watch OOTP!!yaaayyy! i can't wait for it!255 DAYS????its so long!!! but i can watch its trailer in the internet this nov.17!!yeeehaaaww!!HP TRULY ROCKS!!!

UPDATE; WE JUST HIT 87 SIGNATURES!!!! BUT WE NEED MORE!!! http://www.petitionspot.c om/petitions/Harry_Potter _Order_of_Phoenix

Posted by lazyj519 Oct 30th 2006

go figure, they like to ruin everything. all the movies have been ok in there own way, GOF was an exception, due to the fact that they just figured most people have read the books and cut most of the story from the movie. i just wish they wouldnt of put those stupid tree parts in it... compleatly waste of time. They just LOVE taking stuff out, i guess they dont understand the whole potter fandom, we WILL watch it... regardless of the length, but i guess they understand it enough that WE WILL WATCH IT regardless of how short it is also. and that means MONEY.......... just like the new mugglenet book, MONEY IN THERE POCKETS.

Posted by MuggleTowne Oct 30th 2006

well i would sit through the movie no matter how long it is...hey i have sat through all the LOTR movies played one after the other...so I really dont have any problems...and come to think of it I have also sat through all 4 HP movies to date...so I will be just super excited when this one comes out...3 hours or not! Ü

Posted by PsychoticTigre Oct 30th 2006

DON'T CUT IT!!! Boo... I'm pretty sure all of us die-hard potter fans would stay for those last 45 minutes...

Posted by Ginny Oct 30th 2006

Why cut it?... nah!!... the longer the better!!!

Posted by vigilance06 Oct 30th 2006

As a die-hard HP fan, I would love to see everything kept in the release. But I don't get why everyone's saying that WB will make more money if it's longer. No matter what length a film is, we're going to pay the same amount. If I see a movie that's 1 1/2 hours, and see another movie that's 3 hours and 15 minutes long, I'm still going to pay $7.00 for each one. I think that if 45 minutes are cut from the movie, it would be a GOOD thing for WB. Why? Because if the movie is shorter, it can be shown more times in a day ... just a thought. As long as Yates does a good job with directing, and the editing crew doesn't butcher the movie, I'll be happy =]

Posted by DomDove Oct 30th 2006

That's shorter than PoA!!!!!! (Well, not really) They should realise this is not a movie for little kids with short attention spans......this is for FANS =]
