Potter to stay in Georgia schools
Laura Mallory's case for removing the Harry Potter books from Georgia's libraries was dealt another blow today, as the Georgia Board of Education made a unanimous decision to keep the books.

The Gwinnett County school board also voted previously for the books to remain, but Mallory appealed the decision to the state school board. Mallory, who has been working for over a year to ban the books, has shown no signs of giving up, as there is talk of yet another appeal.

Potterdad: your comment was well-written, but I must take issue with something you said. You said the books feature kids getting away with rule-breaking. When Jo started on this series, she was writing primarily for kids. How many kids do you think would be interested in reading HP if Ron, Hermione, and Harry always got punished for every little thing that they did wrong? Besides, you're not even 100 percent correct. Look at "O.O.P". Umbridge gives Harry, and others, detention. Remember that Harry is the one who will be expected to vanquish Voldemort. He can't fight against the evil one if he's sitting in a classroom doing lines, now can he? Harrry has to get away with some things; if not, there's no plot. Sorry, but I just can't admire Mrs. Mallory for what she's trying to do because I simply don't believe she's doing it for the good of her kids. It is NEVER a good idea for a parent to stifle a child's creativity or dismiss a child's need to make his/her own decisions. I wonder, does this woman control every moment of her kids' days? Highly unlikely, so why not let them read what they want to read(within reason)? It's not like her 10-year-old son is asking for Hustler magazine.

Well, hurray for the Georgia School Board!!! I disagree vehemently with Ms. Mallory's thought process on this whole matter, although I applaud her determination in doing what she believes is right and I acknowledge her right to pursue it. I just don't see these books as promoting witchcraft. To me, that's like claiming a book that includes clowns is trying to convince readers to run off and join the circus. To me, these books are more about bravery and friendship and loyalty and love, and choosing to do what you know is right, even when the choice means you have to do what is hardest, rather than what is easy. While I have no doubt her kids benefit from having a loving mother who is greatly concerned over what she believes is best for them, I feel sorry that they are (presumably) missing out on the joy of experiencing this fabulous series while they're young. Sadly for Ms. Mallory, the whole effort may likely backfire on her, for as someone already mentioned that Hermione realized in OoTP...telling someone they CAN'T read something is often a pretty sure way of insuring that they DO read it. Her kids probably want to read the HP books more now than ever, if they haven't already managed to do it.

I agree with Anna on the first page. It's a shame that Laura Mallory can't direct her fervor to something more important, like helping the homeless or fighting to rid hunger.

Posted by asia_canada Dec 14th 2006

IT'S A FREAKING BOOK... go ban cinderella... fairies and magic you know, don't want any of that... i hate how people do that for a publicity-ish thing... if harry potter wasn't big, she'd never bother... i only have one word for a person like this... and coincidentally enough... it rhymes with witch

Posted by Nameless Dec 14th 2006

*groans* Can't she see that NO ONE AGREES WITH HER? Why would she be so anti-Potter but she hasn't said anything about LOTR, Eragon, and Charlie Bone, to just name a few other fantasy books with magic in them. God.

Posted by iwishiwashermione Dec 14th 2006

did she honestly think that they would vote in favor of her? i don't want to sound rude, but i don't believe she has read any of the books. if she did, she would know that they're not evil and they are just about a schoolboy and his friends who fight off evil.

Posted by Lizzie355 Dec 14th 2006

some people *cough cough like Laura Mallory cough cough* never seem to learn...god...obviously shes determined...but like Junigatsu...there are more important things to fight for (aka HP is NOT EVIL)...

Posted by Moaning_Myrtle Dec 14th 2006

HORRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew there was no chance of HP being banned though- I mean, there are sooooooo many people who would vote against that womans idea. So i'm just glad more kids are allowed to be introduced to these wonderful novels. ~Moaining Myrtle

HA HA HA...Take that...but whats really sad is that she has nothing better to do with her sad pitiful life.

Whoo hoo! Hurray for the INTELLIGENT!!!!

Posted by hpfan_11293 Dec 14th 2006

As a Georgian myself, I am glad that other Georgians have enough sense to not ban the books. But she still needs to find another thing to do then TRY and FAIL to ban the books. POTTER RULES!!!!!!!

Posted by kula_melike Dec 14th 2006

Good grief.. why dont she just give it up already?! I'm just glad the books stay! What is she thinkin?

Posted by HPbrownLove1 Dec 14th 2006

ohhh serves her right!!

ALLELUIA! WHOOOO!

Posted by hpfan_11293 Dec 14th 2006

She needs a life. she really does. no one I know disagrees with the books. THe worse thing that i know of is my teacher not letting me do a book report on an HP book because the movie was coming out. It wasn't that bad but the movies barely scratch the surface. But I got over it very quickly.

Posted by jay4034 Dec 14th 2006

i actually had the chance to meet ms mallory. believe it or not shes a very nice lady but she is a little misguided when it comes to this issue. she really needs to simply excersize her control over her own kids (also well very amiable). shes got a bit of a god-complex, she wants utter control over the lives of her own and other children. either way shes never going to get her ban passed.

Posted by hpfan_11293 Dec 14th 2006

Do all human beings have brains? because I think she has a lack of any brain cells. she needs to give it up. how many times does she have to (unanimously) lose the case before she'll give up? the state supreme court would be her next place to try and ban the books (cause i doubt she has given up yet. i don't think she is that smart.) I will be suprised if it even makes it that far. Mallory (Malfoy) your an idoit if you don't know Harry will ALWAYS win.

Posted by WickedSmile Dec 14th 2006

I'm glad she lost again but to hear that she's still trying is very, very annoying. There is obviously something missing in this woman's life if she has enough time to focus on getting rid of books. Maybe her husband doesn't pay attention to her...

Posted by HMWogglebugTE Dec 14th 2006

"Do you ever read any of the books you burn?" He laughed. "That's against the law!" "Oh, of course." "It's fine work. Monday burn Millay, Wednesday Whitman, Friday Falkner, burn 'em to ashes, then burn the ashes. That's our offical slogan." Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury (1953)

Posted by SacredPhoenix Dec 14th 2006

GIVE IT A REST WOMAN! If your case has been voted against twice, the chances are it'll be voted against again!

Posted by kkatid Dec 14th 2006

okay, this is what, the third time losing? I am glad she lost (the third time) but it is getting very, very, old. the worst case scenario is that the school board will get tired of her whinning and just ban Harry.

Posted by Annie Dec 14th 2006

LMFAO another one? Oh my goodness, this woman is mad amusing. We should send her loads of Potter-related items to thank her for caring so much.

Posted by WickedSmile Dec 14th 2006

Does anyone have her address? I would love to write to her.

Posted by silverphoenix21 Dec 14th 2006

You know, the more you try to ban something the more popular it gets (like the Umbridge banning the Quibbler thing). I wonder what Laura Mallory would think if she knew that she was unknowingly supporting Potter. You think that after two unanimous no's she'd get the fact that banning Potter is NEVER going to happen... Please lady, just get a life and leave the rest of us alone.

Posted by mluckkoko Dec 14th 2006

HAHA IN UR FACE STUPID WOMAN. NO ONE CARES WHAT YOU THINK

Posted by marsisbrighttonight Dec 14th 2006

uhh DUH she lost...she better not appeal again, its getting on my nerves =\

Posted by silverphoenix21 Dec 14th 2006

Why can't she fight to feed hungry children in Africa or something? But nooo... you don't have to give food to help starving kids... you just have to keep them from reading Harry Potter.

Posted by hpintwense06 Dec 14th 2006

ANOTHER APPEAL???? this woman sure knows how to work the court system.... but not to her advantage! when will she come to realize that they won't ban Harry Potter?????? This is good though that they didn't, although no one really thought they would ban it. Harry all the way! ;)

Posted by Dobbyroxmysoxs Dec 14th 2006

OMG you guys the promoting of wichcraft and whatever else she said is put in the HP books is sooooooooo subtle and deceptive that its not even there! Wow! Also I wish she would read this so I could tell her what an idiot she is! I hope whoever has her adress or whatever is sending her mail to tell her that before she bashes the books she should actually READ THEM!!!!!!!!!!! I feel bad for her kids!!!!!!! you know how bad they must have it!!!!!! I mean I would feel completly embarrassed that my mom was waisting her time on something so idiotic! and also doesn't she know, as well as many others, that in The Bill of Rights its supposed to protect us from CENSORSHIP!!!!!!!!! Press isn't just newspapers! It's books, music, anything that can be read or listened to!!!!!!!!!! I just want to scream at Ms.Mallory!!!!!(or is it Mrs.??????? all well i don't care! :) )

Posted by Witchy_Woman Dec 14th 2006

I knew she couldn't win. Did you guys know that she checks up on us? I mean to say that she checks these fansites for "evidence". So, Laura Mallory, if you're reading this: HA! HAHA! hahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahaha! In your effing face!

Posted by Dobbyroxmysoxs Dec 14th 2006

Dear Potterdad, I understand what you are saying, but this lady has not even read the books, so I find that until she has read the books, she has no right to say anything about what's in them, she has her right to an opinion about them, but right now she is forcing her opinion on others, and that is wrong. She can forbid her children to if she thinks they're dangerous, but she has no right to say others cannot, even in her children's school.

Posted by Rainbow_muggle Dec 14th 2006

I totally agree with everyone about the whole doesn't-she-have-somethin g-better-to-do-with-her-t ime thing. I'm sure she is a nice person and all, but it annoys me to see people tyring to ban my favorite books. I am athiest but you don't see me trying to stop people from exercising their religous freedom. As long as you don't make me suffer because of your stubbornness, I could care less.

Posted by TestName Dec 14th 2006

This is absurd. I'd say I admire her dedication, but this scenario is too ridiculous, and her obsession to ban these books is almost scary. If you want to "protect" your own children, fine. Just don't shove your values onto the rest of the world.

Posted by Susan_Bones Dec 14th 2006

"Oh Harry, don't you see? If she could have done one thing to make absolutely sure that every single person in this school will read your interview, it was banning it!"~Hermione Granger pg. 582 ootp Isn't Hermione wise? Thanks for supporting out favorite series Ms. Mallory ;-)

Posted by TerrianSedai Dec 14th 2006

Yeah! When is she going to see that she's fighting a battle she has no chance of winning? Honestly, if she doesn't like the idea of witchcraft she doesn't have to read the books, but that doesn't give her the right to try to prevent everyone else from reading the books! It's actually worse if children aren't exposed to fantasy and condradictory ideas because if they aren't they don't learn to recognize it. Kids who don't learn to tell the difference between fantasy and reality grow up to be really messed up adults. All knowledge is worth having. Ideas are not harmful, the actions people take upon them are. Also, I'd just like to point out to everyone that this wasn't a court case, but simply a vote of the Board of Education. I think some people were getting it confused because of the appeals process. She's not appealing in court, simply to a higher Board of Education.

Posted by meeeeegan Dec 14th 2006

HAHAHHAH! TAKE THAT, MORK! i gave an english speech on why this woman is an idiot. man. if i were her daughter, i would pull a sirius and run away to a house where i CAN read harry potter. and not have to be around this LOSER.

Posted by grednforge Dec 14th 2006

God lady! Just give it up! I can't stand people like that! I'm glad there was a unanimous decision to keep the books... I HATE intolerant people. Just because she doesn't like the books and thinks they're wrong, doesn't mean that everybody else hates them and thinks they're wrong, as well. She's so incredibly selfish. She just wants to ruin it for those children who want to be able to read a nice enjoyable book that will transport them into a world away from their own full of lunatic women who want to get rid of WONDERFUL books that teach children about the struggles between good and evil, not about witchcraft. She probably hasn't even read the books, so how DARE she make such ludacris assumptions about them???? Sorry, but when I hear such comments being made about the Harry Potter books, it sends me into rages. When I was in 4th grade, I hated to read. Then my sister introduced me to the world of Harry Potter, and those books taught me that reading was fun. How DARE this lady try to ruin this opportunity to get other children to start enjoying reading, as well. If she has such a problem with the books, then she doesn't have to read them. She shouldn't ruin the opportunities for other people to enjoy them as well. She should actually pick up a Harry Potter book. Who knows? She might actually enjoy it.

Posted by Why_Here Dec 14th 2006

Jay4034, I am very interested in your visit with Ms. Mallory. Very intriguing with the face that she seems like a kind woman, but seems a little misguided. I do know there are books out there that slam Harry Potter(Harry Potter and the Bible comes to mind), so she may have come across that book and read it, and then decided the books were evil, or already had a suspision they were. It's a real shame that she wants to restrict what children read-I understand if she feels that her children shouldn't be reading them, but to make other children not realize how wonderful Harry Potter could be? I'm sorry, but that's not right. I must admit, I do admire Ms. Mallory for her determination.

Posted by OriginalPrankster Dec 14th 2006

"Talk of another appeal"? Give it up, lady! That year spent working on banning Harry Potter has been wasted, so she shouldn't waste anyone else's time if she's just going to lose again.

Posted by Peevsie Dec 14th 2006

HAHAHA! I must laugh, a UNANIMOUS decision. Tehe, priceless. Go Harry.

Posted by HPFANTimothy Dec 14th 2006

Oh my God... I WISH this woman would JUST GIVE UP! She is ever so pathetic! I hate this woman! Can't she see that kids all over the world love Harry Potter? Argh! Seriously, I can't wait for the next appeal, she's going to lose so badly. And she's such a NONG! Can't she SEE that she's going to keep LOSING!!??!! I wonder what Jo thinks of her, and I wonder what she thinks of Jo. Laura Mallory, your a git. Just go home and get a life! And if you have a problem with our most beloved book series, deal with it. Because we're not EVER going to listen to ANYTHING you say. Because you've got an I.Q. of negative one. I feel awful bad for her kids... ;[ They must feel like wanting to crawl under a rock and die.

Posted by Ronaldweasley Dec 14th 2006

THANK YOU! Some peace on this case!

HA! in-her-face!! what a loser.. she even KNEW that she was goig o lose so why bother..why doesnt she just go ban snow white or something.it has a lot of magic stuff going on you knoww

For Mallory, I have two words; Thou fool! As for the rest of the potterverse, we know who REALLY is evil here.

Posted by mHarryPotterm Dec 14th 2006

laura mallory.....if u don't want to read the books then don't. don't stop other people from doing so.....wow i'm glad i don't live in georgia lol. AmberEyes: i like how u quoted the constitution...but she has a right to protest against the books. but i like how ur thinking. i mean what is this country coming to....no one can tell you what to write and not write. goshhh laura mallory haha i'm mad

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe Dec 14th 2006

Laura Mallory, Who said you were able to dictate what other children read. They aren't your children. You have no authority over them. People like you make me WANT to lean Wicca

Posted by HPFANTimothy Dec 14th 2006

WHAT HAVE I DONE??? Oh mg God, Tim you FOOL! I was just so annoyed with this woman I forgot one of the most important things of all… freedom of speech. I don’t know, I totally disagree with what this woman is doing and all, but she believes in what she is doing. Of course it’s WRONG! I hate her, and I cannot believe that she is still trying when she’s obviously going to lose, and when it’s perfectly clear that the Harry Potter books do not promote witchcraft and sorcery. But she believes in what she is doing, and she has the right to do what she is doing. Everyone will vote against it of course, but you know. She’s doing what she feels is right. And it’s within the law for her to do what she’s doing, so let’s not be so rude (ignoring my last comment) let’s just sit down and watch what happens. Even though we know what’s going to happen. The chances of her winning is the same chance as Voldermort going out with the Giant Squid (They’d make a very nice couple). So hush now people (lol, ‘hush’) let us just watch what happens, and respect Laura Mallory. Even though we know she’s a stuck-up prune, it’s within the law what she is doing. And btw, why can’t she just forbid HER kids from reading the series? Why must she [attempt] to forbid EVERYONE in Georgia from reading them too?

Posted by jens Dec 14th 2006

doesnt it sound logical that mrs. mallory would want to know EXACTLY what she is trying to ban? (the books are too long).. i really dont think that is the reason that she wont even attempt to read any of the books. maybe just maybe these opinions arent really hers. i mean think about it, it really does make sense. there are loads of books longer than hp. (THE BIBLE) and i can almost guarantee that she has read that! i think that it probably started in her church. maybe it was being attacked for promoting evil and she took it upon herself to act on it without (doing her homework so to say). she obviously has just listened to other people about how they feel about hp, which means that she has NO OPINION OF HER OWN! she's just spouting out others opinions. they cannot possibly be HER OPINIONS if she has never even read the books

Posted by karategirl Dec 14th 2006

OMG when will she ever stop!!! This better be the last time!!! HARRY POTTER RULES AND LAURA MALLORY SUCKS
