Potter to stay in Georgia schools
Laura Mallory's case for removing the Harry Potter books from Georgia's libraries was dealt another blow today, as the Georgia Board of Education made a unanimous decision to keep the books.

The Gwinnett County school board also voted previously for the books to remain, but Mallory appealed the decision to the state school board. Mallory, who has been working for over a year to ban the books, has shown no signs of giving up, as there is talk of yet another appeal.

The first ammendment is freedom of speech. Of course all of us know this. They don't allow prayer in school, because not all religions pray to the same god(s). But me and friends of mine are christian and we pray every morning during the moment of silence. Prayer is what the Moment of silence is for. Most schools do have a moment of silence. I respect that she doesn't want her kids to read the book, but other parents don't feel the same way. I love Harry Potter. It's is very well written. This Lady needs to just quit, because she is never going to win.

then again, basically every1 here in Gwinnett owns the books neways

Wow, that's pathetic. Y'know, lady, if you really wanna be a good Christian, then find something IMPORTANT to fight for! I'm Roman Catholic and I LOVE Harry Potter. Does that make me satanic or black magic user? What about AIDs? What about drug use, or starvation, or wars? What about domestic violence, poverty, or even global warming? Find the things that matter first, then make sure what you're vouching for or against is really what you think it is. You can't always make judgements on you THINK something may be, you have to know and learn about it. Idiots (and I use almost never say this) are what really ticks me off! I know that your little crusade isn't going to make simply because there are people like me, and Emerson, and Melissa, and even Jo herself are not going to let you take this thing that has inspired so many, and have gotten kids excited about reading and writing. So, Laura Mallory, the question is, will you know when to stop, when enough is enough? Or will you continue to poke the eye of the dragon of the Potterverse? For people who know L33T, I say this- B4K4!

This woman is crazy. Nobody is forcing her to read the books so she shouldn't stop other people from reading them.

As I read the various news articles pertaining to Mrs. Mallory, I'm reminded in no small way of Dolores Umbridge. I find myself amused at life imitating art here in such a fashion. I cannot get upset over the fact that Mrs. Mallory is trying to ban these books on basis that they teach witchcraft to children - for, not only does she know nothing about the books or the intent of their author, Ms. Rowling, she clearly is equally in the dark about what modern day witches are about. Being a witch myself, I like many of my contemporaries are extremely diverted by the way witches and wizards are portrayed in the books. Rowling uses witches as a literary device only, and not as a tool for proselytization. I think Mrs. Mallory would be surprised to know how many real witches turn away those curious to learn, who come solely upon what they've read in a book. She is not the only one looking out for the general welfare of children in her community. Poor Mrs. Mallory is a victim of her clearly inadequate research. Then again, it is usually in a zealot's best interest not to dig too deeply, if they wish to further their views. It is mindsets like hers that, in Rowling's fictional world, caused the division between Muggle reality and Magical reality in the first place. It is a sad reality in our world also, that we all must contend with. In this happy season, we do well to remember the old carol: "Old grudges forgot are put in the pot, All sorrows aside they lay; The old and the young doth carol this song, To drive the cold winter away." I wish Mrs. Mallory a very Happy Christmas, full of love and plenty.

in yo face laura mallory!!! maybe she could just... read the books. She seems to be wasting alot of spare time trying to appeal them....

Posted by Sex_Drugs_Rock_n_Roll Dec 17th 2006

What a silly woman. Harry Potter premotes witchcraft no more than other books like the Whitby Witches and you don't see her appealing against them. Even if they do it shouldn't be a problem, there's nothing wrong with witchcraft, it's practise by both pagan and wicca, and as friends of people following those religions, I can say there isn't anything abnormal about them, they don't sacrifice or anything so that women is over reacting and probably doesn't have the foggiest idea as to what she's talking about...

Does anyone know how I might get in contact with Ms. Mallory? I'm currently writing a 10,000 word undergraduate dissertation on Harry Pottert and how it's not linked to occultism and it's not leading kids to witchcraft. I'd like hear her side of the arguement and also see her evidence of kids actually being drawn to witchcraft because of Harry Potter. I'd like to send her a copy of my diss. I'd love to change ger mind or at least start up a debate!

Posted by PsychoticTigre Dec 18th 2006

Of she keeps this up, the board's going to give in just to shut her up. Poor little georgie kiddies.

Posted by RBRWBECK Dec 18th 2006

Didn't anyone tell that lady those books were for reading pleasure not intended for witches or wizards use against anyone. What is she some sort of quack? There is nothing wrong with those books or movies.

Posted by iluvharry Dec 18th 2006

AGAIN?!?! And they UNANIMOUSLY voted against her? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! Why does she keep appealing this if every single time they have kept the books on the shelves? Does she think that they are going to *magically* change their minds? Some eople just don't know when to quit!!!!

POTTER RULES!!! HA!!

In reference to Potterdad's post, I've just heard of this case, and I'm appalled that this woman is trying to get rid of one of the greatest literary works of the age. These books have had a greater impact on childhood reading than any book I've seen in my lifetime. As an educator, I PERSONALLY take great offense at this woman's actions. She has no right to attempt a ban on Harry Potter in the schools. And for your information, the highschool I went to still says the pledge of allegiance every single morning (if someone has a problem with it, they simply don't have to recite it.) AND we have BIBLES IN OUR LIBRARY. Some schools have even began classes in which they study the Bible as a literary work. Hermione's words will stand true, and I hope and pray that she comes home one day to find her whole family reading these wonderful books. P.S. This woman's attitude reminds me a bit of Professor Umbridge.

tha nasty betta watch out before I come up and slap her upside her big ol wanna-be-Christian head.... haha jk I wouldn't do that.... but seriously I would love to talk to her lol.... the woman is clearly off her rocker, what, does she think God is telling her to do this? She must not understand that children can find Christian themes in these books, she must not understand that JK Rowling believes in God and is a member of the Church of Scotland, she must not have ever heard of the book "Finding God in Harry Potter".... she needs to give it a rest. If the HP books really wanted children doing witchcraft, I wouldn't be reading them. I mean why is she even bothering? She's just going to lose over and over and over again, and I hope someday she'll realize what a horrible mistake she made in even trying to ban Harry Potter (as if anyone can do that!) and be embarassed and ashamed to find out how much these books are helping our generation of young people when it comes to discovering the joys of reading! Witchcraft, my foot. Take that, Laura, and all your ilk! Just give me five minutes alone with her in a dark room.... lol

I don't get it, what's her problem with the books? maybe she had a very bad memories from witchcraft books, I mean why Harry Potter?

Posted by hp323232 Dec 19th 2006

i think i allready commented on this...

Posted by felixfelicis888 Dec 19th 2006

HA HA!! REMEMBER SHE SAID "OMG THEY ARE TO LONG TO READ" THINK ABOUT THIS- IF SHE READ 1 PAGE OF THE FIRST BOOK A DAY, IT WOULD TAKE 341 DAYS. BUT NOOOOOO... THATS TOO LONG FOR HER... EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS COMPLAINED ABOUT SOMETHING SHE HASN'T READ HERSELF FOR O-V-E-R A YEAR!!!!!!!

Posted by felixfelicis888 Dec 19th 2006

O YEAH ONE MORE THING... AS RON WOULD SAY: SHE'S OF HER ROCKER, SHE IS AN OLD FRAUD, I ALWAYS THOUGHT SHE WAS A NUTTER. YAY GO RON AND JKR PLEASE DONT KILL RON IN BOOK 7. BUT IF YOU DO I'LL STILL LIKE YOU.

Posted by HermioneGurl Dec 20th 2006

Doesn't Mallory sond like Malfoy?

Posted by thisISawesome Dec 20th 2006

who would hate harry potter? i personally think there is no harm in any of it because its just fiction! some people just get too absorbed into irrevelant things.

Posted by ChizzaLazty Dec 21st 2006

I've heard of many people who doesn't like the books, including the pope etc., but I don't think I've heard of anyone taking it to that level. She can stand up to what she believes in, and for people not to treat her differently for her believes, but she can't walk around believing that she can change what other people read. Hey, no one is making her read the books, right? I think it's weird :P

Posted by penguinsarecool Dec 22nd 2006

Lady, I have something to tell you: Get Some Therapy! Harry Potter will stay so just give up before you embarass yourself even more (if that's possible)!

Posted by rusty Dec 22nd 2006

YAY!

Posted by mdtuaca Dec 23rd 2006
