The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

Posted by cool_varzz Dec 21st 2006

i hate to reveal this but i am a little disappointed with the title....i mean it sounds a little incomplete n is somehow not very satisfying.....but Deathly Hallows sounds like the graveyard Jo was talking abt long time back in an interview (the one at Hogwarts)....i hope Jo proves me wrong n may this title be the most apt choice for the 7th book

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

oh hey ginny!!!

Posted by Luna_sees_thestrals Dec 21st 2006

hey, some people have been saying stuff about Harry going to the underworld or something....maybe thats how the 2way mirror will come into play...maybe sirius has the other and rab is with him and knows where the locket is and ....and....oh this is soooo awesome!!!!!!!!

Posted by grullotobi Dec 21st 2006

I find the definition of "Hallow" quite interesting: v : render holy by means of religious rites [syn: consecrate, bless, sanctify] ...........[ant: desecrate] To make holy; to set apart for holy or religious use; to consecrate; to treat or keep as sacred; to reverence. I suspect there is more to this title than meets the eye.

Posted by sirius_laksh Dec 21st 2006

Wow!!! that is a really crazy title I can't wait to see who dies and how it ends up! The release is to far away!!!

Posted by Dana_of_the_DA Dec 21st 2006

Ginny, Which intreview was that?

Posted by Faolan Dec 21st 2006

This is super exciting!! I can't wait to read it!! Use of exclimation points running rampant!!! OK. Calm down....calm down. Can't calm down!! Someone on the first page said they thought the "Deathly Hallows" refered to Horcruxes, and I would have to agree that this sounds very promising. Although, it could refer to how to destroy Horcruxes, or if Harry is a Horcrux, how to destroy it without killing him. Does anyone else think Nagini isn't a Horcrux? THat we are still at least one short? So Excited!!! Harry & Ginny forever!!!!!

Posted by Rwraith Dec 21st 2006

I think it's a place name. i.e. Sleepy Hallow.

Posted by gryffindor_girl101 Dec 21st 2006

OH MY GOSH!!!!! I'M SOOO HAPPY!!!!!!! Maybe that means the book is almost done!! Yea!!!! ~gryffindor_girl 101

Omigosh I cant believe it I keep on repeting it over and over like "Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." And peopkle around me think I am INSANE! But wow guys! Think about it...it is just sooo sad ya know? This Is th e beginning of the END! No more HP after the Deathly Hallows. I can hardly like digest the fact that it...is...nearly...over. I mean this had been such an enormous part of all of our lives...the analyzing, the theorizing, the fanfics, the fanart, just the everything that we have been builiding up until now will either be shut down or brought forth in this final book. Good Lord. I can't get over it. We have been obsessing over this amazing amazing book for so long...for most of my life in fact! And now in little more than a year or two it'll be out...and it will all be over. Over. Fin. No More. No more analyzing and podcasting. Over. And just the thought of not feverishly checking Mugglenet or Leaky every five seconds or Waiting on tenterhooks for the next podcast...it is just sad you know? It's nearly done. And I think I will go to my corner and cry. And maybe after all the depression I will go reread all six books. And dudes, If I am so spastic about a TITLE...I will seriously be in trouble when I am holding that book in my hands...and then finishing it. Wow. It's almost over. One glimmer of hope though...It's not over just yet.

Posted by hpwiz812 Dec 21st 2006

Well, when she realeased the title for "Half-Blood Prince" i didnt like it.... hopefully "Deathly Hallows" will grow on me just like HBP did.... what's the abbreviation for it, "DH"?

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

Rwraith it's Hallow not Hollow! I only realized that about an hour ago!!

Posted by Ginny Dec 21st 2006

oops!... i was suposed to write die not day... srry ppl... i'm a bit tired after all the screaming!... hi christianaeg!... sorry for not answering the owls!... i've been dead busy!... soo... what do you think about the title!!??

Posted by sweeterised Dec 21st 2006

PotterCast said this: Since the 'Hallows' part of the title could be linked to All Hallow's Eve and Wikipedia describes it as "one of the liminal times of the year when spirits can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent", does this mean that deceased characters (i.e. Harry's parents, Sirius, Dumbledore) will be able to contact Harry at some point in the book? And maybe help him with the final battle? I think I like this title!!! :]

Posted by harrypotterfreak15 Dec 21st 2006

THAT IS SUCH A COOL TITLE! i cant belive some people dont like it. just wait for the book i bet it will blow us all away. and for all those people who dont like it, its the coolest title ever.

Posted by MarySue Dec 21st 2006

I think the "Hallows" is Halloween (All Hallows Eve). Voldemort was originally defeated on halloween, and that's when Harry will defeat him for good.

Posted by phoenixlament Dec 21st 2006

I KNOW! I saw while i was at the hospital to get my work done, and i nearly freaked out! YAYAY! I CANT BELIEVE IT!

JKR once was asked in an interview "Are you going to kill Harry?" She replied, "God no! Think of the death threats I would get." If she did, it's a good thing she is rich. All the parents will sue her for having to put their children in therapy.

Posted by crazy_ned Dec 21st 2006

The title means Harry will die.

Posted by Wierdgirl5834 Dec 21st 2006

AAAAH! Okay so i was in 9th period art class just now, so my classmate Xavier comes up to me and tells me that our teacher Mr.Warcholl knows the title of book 7, and I'm like yeah right, and then the teacher shows it on mugglenet and as soon as I saw it I screamed right in his ear and I got in so much trouble but it was worth it!!!!!!!

Posted by amy4dan1327 Dec 21st 2006

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! finally a title!!!!!! i think it's awesome.... Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows!!!! i can't wait to see what happens, i'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! ;)

Posted by PantheaTheDeathEater Dec 21st 2006

"Hallows? As in Godric Hallow?" Well, this is impossible, because it's Godric's HOLLOW. I don't believe the Hallows are "things", as it were, but some revered spot in the wizarding world, perhaps a place of Dark Magic - perhaps where the Death Eater and the Order of the Phoenix are going to battle for the last time? However, I do agree with many people on here - a very pleasing Christmas present indeed for us lowly Muggles! Apparently, 2 characters are going to die - my money's on Snape as one of them, which is not a nice thought, him being my favourite character and all... But surely Harry Potter himself will not turn into a killer, as he said in Prisoner... how he didn't want his dad's "two best friends to become killers - just for (Pettigrew)." So, in keeping with honour and general good-guy-ness, it seems rather unlikely that Harry will be responsible for a death directly (and by that, I mean pointing his wand at someone and screaming Av. Ked.)

AHH!!!! I'M SHAKING! THAT'S FRICKIN AMAZING!

O dang book 7 title o dang!!! what a sweet title too

Posted by freakinHEIGHTS Dec 21st 2006

oh. my. Lord. why??????????/ JO WHAT IN THE HECK??? i am almost scared to READ IT!! with a title like that???? Jo this had better be a heck of a good story....because now that i calm down i realize....none of the books have good titles, really. but none...as HORRIFYING...as that! did anyone else notice 'deathly' and 'hallows' each have 7 letters? i think thats just sad. Jo, we dont care how many frickin LETTERS r in the title; next time make it something that lives up to your amazingly indescrible writing! excpet...there isnt a next time. *burts out in tears* NOT a good way wrap things up. hopefully theres a darn good excuse!! argh...i still cant honestly control myself oh my god oh my god!!!!!

Posted by suesnape Dec 21st 2006

Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is one of the liminal times of the year when spirits can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent We know that we will find out about why some people die and become ghosts and others don't. We also know that even if people are noy ghosts, like Harry's parents and Cedric, they can speak limitedly to those who are alive. A sign of more death talks to come?

Posted by christianaeg Dec 21st 2006

the title's on her site...

Posted by Ashley Dec 21st 2006

BRILLIANT present! Can't wait any longer!

Posted by Sunshine1313 Dec 21st 2006

OMG! Totally AWESOME! I was so not expecting the title this early! YAY! Oh, and I think I know the interview that Ginny was talking about. I don't know if anyone's answered this question yet, but I think someone was asking her if there's going to be an eighth book. She laughed and said that she got that a lot. People would ask her that question just to find out if Harry dies in the seventh one. She said something like, "Honestly, do you people think that I'm so kind hearted as to let him live?" Then she laughed and said she was joking. But then she added, "Or am I?" I'm not sure, but I think maybe that's the one you were talking about, right? And the quotes may be off a bit, because I don't remember exactly what she said. ~Sunny

I liked Half-Blood Prince. I don't like this title. I just don't like the fact that 'death' is part of the title, it makes it sound too . . . generic? As if this isn't the actual title but a joke of what the real title could be. Like Harry Potter and the Deadly Token or Harry Potter and the Final Requirement.

Posted by ShippersUnited Dec 21st 2006
