The title of Book 7!
Presenting your Christmas present from Jo Rowling:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Thank you, Jo, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Analyze the title: Debate and discussion about the title is currently taking place over at our forums - go check it out!

The release date: Find out when we think Book 7 will be released, now that we have a title.

EDIT: Some news outlets are reporting the title as "Deathly Hollows," but this is incorrect. Also, for those of you who hadn't noticed, the title was released yesterday on the winter solstice. Recall in OOTP: "...at the solstice will come a new... and none will come after..." At the winter solstice, a new title will be revealed, but as this is the last book, no more will be released.

I think the title is cool. That is all.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows My Theories "Deathly" is used as an adjective in this phrase - "hallow" is a verb and not a noun, "deathly" (an adjective) couldn't describe a verb ("hallow")- therefore, JK Rowling must mean to use hallow as a noun-hallow must be the name of SOMEONE, a PLACE, or a THING (horcrux?) The place "Hallow" is where Dumbledore/Sirius/both are One of the Horcruxes, the final one Harry will have to destroy, will be a sacred or holy item that is deathly, or cursed when it is destroyed, thus killing harry? The title "Deathly Hallows" means VERY HOLY or TO MAKE VERY HOLY Deathly (when used as an adverb) very; utterly: deathly afraid. Hallow (verb) to make holy; sanctify; consecrate. Harry Potter and the VERY HOLY Horcrux that's Cursed…. Hmm. Possible.

that... is 100%... no... 43095830958230954809546+ infinity% fantastic. sounds like a scary title... but oh wow... so cool. and good job micah! you must have magic powers... are you REALLY a muggle or a seer?

my last one was a little confusing b/c of the enters not working. maybe this will work. =]] Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows My Theories "Deathly" is used as an adjective in this phrase - "hallow" is a verb and not a noun, "deathly" (an adjective) couldn't describe a verb ("hallow")- therefore, JK Rowling must mean to use hallow as a noun-hallow must be the name of SOMEONE, a PLACE, or a THING (horcrux?) I am excited.

Posted by hpgirl953 Dec 21st 2006

I think the title has to do with Godric's Hollow. In the end of book six Harry says he wants to go there.

Posted by mave Dec 21st 2006

I know what it means. Remember in book 6 harry said that he is going back to Godricks hollow where his parents were killed. I bet that he goes there and finds clues to his family. Maybe he finds spirits there too, but I bet there is a Horcrux there too. I am willing to bet that the last battle between harry and voldy will be in godrics hollow where it all started.

Hallelujah! Oh jeeze, this is the BEST Christmas gift I could ask for! Three cheers for Jo Rowling and her wonderful timing ^_^

Posted by Tux789 Dec 21st 2006

well the title abbreviates to DH so CLEARLY we're going to see some D/H shipping going on in the last book... finally

Posted by mave Dec 21st 2006

I have another theory. I am now almost certain that harry is the last decendednt of Godric gryfindorr. He pulled out the sword in cos and his parents lived in godrics hollow. i think the big theing revealed an]bout his mother is that she is a decendent of godric gryfinorr. Harry goes bacjk to godrics hollow where the last duel takes place: the duel between that last decendent of slythern and the last decendent of gryfindorr.

Posted by mave Dec 21st 2006

Here is why I think harry will die. JK rowling does give some clues. First, in book three he does gets the sign of the grim several times. Professor treylawney is not a compleate fake. It was predicted that he would win unexpected golds when reading tea leaves and he did in gof. Second, JKR said that the books were about death. She wrote them around when her mother died. Read the interviwes with her. And lasly harry loves his friends more then anything and they love him. I think someone is bound to die to save another, and the same charm would be used to finish voldermont as was used to kill him the first time. WQhat do you think?

Posted by Aliwali Dec 21st 2006

I dont know why but i dont like it...i just think HBP was a more mysterious title...

Posted by hpgirl953 Dec 21st 2006

but if harry will die will voldymort too??? i mean in the prophecy it said neither can live while the other survives... maybe one will be killed by fate.

Posted by awrenmalfoy Dec 21st 2006

AAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGG HHHHHHHHHHHHH! i am crying in my pants i cant believe it. woah. im so esited.

Posted by Tux789 Dec 21st 2006

alright but in all seriousness, I think I'm going to agree that its refering to Godric's Hallow. It kinda makes sense in a way since the story kinda began there with Voldemort trying to kill Harry so to have it ends there with Harry killing Voldemort (and possibly himself) makes since... kinda...

Posted by MuggleMage Dec 21st 2006

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! !! OMG OMG I was hoping she would tell us for Christmas! I LOVE YOU JO!!! Isn't weird that we get so excited over a title? I have to call my friends!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D

Posted by PadfootBaby Dec 21st 2006

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS!!!!!!!!!! This is the best Christmas present I've ever gotten! Thank you SO MUCH, Jo!!!! :) OMG, I'm practically hyperventilating... WOOOOOO!

Posted by hpgirl953 Dec 21st 2006

yeah but i think both will die but in a happy way. like IF harry dies he'll probably meet his parents or something... or if voldemort dies lily and james could come back because the caster died.

Posted by Kerrie_Black Dec 21st 2006

Firstly, I just have to say that this title is absolutely terrific and turned a bad day very good (= And secondly I wanted to dispute the theory of people thinking that the title refers to Godrics Hollow. Well firstly, Hollow and Hallow are two very different meanings. Hallow can mean either a spiritual thing as numerous people have pointed out of it has a reference to All Hallows Eve. (I.E. Halloween). Which brings me to my next point. The whole Boy-Who-Lived, Defeated of Voldemort, Chosen One, Death of Lily and James Potter happened on Halloween right? Maybe this is a reference that Harry will finally destroy the last horcrux (Voldemort) on Halloween. Ending it sixteen years after it began? Hmm ... Wait ago Jo! Kerrie_Black

Posted by Quidditchrules00 Dec 21st 2006

ZOMG! ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG! Heard it on news first! ZOMG. I have a friend that like HP, but it's Christmas break, so I'll have to tell her it in January. Z.O.M.G!

Posted by HalttIAmReptar Dec 21st 2006

Oh my god. I can't wait to read it! It sounds amazing!

Posted by hpgirl953 Dec 21st 2006

no i think it has to with godrics hollow because in the end of book six he says he wants to go there so it probably has to do with that.

Posted by flipgirl Dec 21st 2006

Deathly Hallows! Oh my gosh this is radical! I've been dieing for this title and now I cannot wait until the book comes out. The only depressing thing is is that it's

Posted by radishearrings Dec 21st 2006

ZOMG!!!! I love you mugglenet. I really wanted to find out the title on my own but my computer froze after I opened the package. =(. But at least mugglenet posted it here! I can't wait till book 7 comes out!

Posted by onlii_artist Dec 21st 2006

p.s. it's HOLLOWS not HALLOWS. this is important.

Posted by julie_marie_potter Dec 21st 2006

AHHH! i'm so excited about the title. However, I feel it is rather foreboding, seeing as how it roughly means honoring of those who are dead. at least that's how i interpreted it. yikes. i want the seventh book to come out tomorrow, but i also know i will need a box of tissues!!!!!

Posted by pink_allegria Dec 21st 2006

Deathly Hallows? At first impression I thought it was Hollows from the anime Bleach. Not as cool a title as I'd expected, but hey, the boss's said it. Can't wait for the book anyhow. =)

Posted by hpgirl953 Dec 21st 2006

who thinks harry will die? i heard jo said if he dies no other can contiune the series for her. and then it will be everlasting....

Posted by dream_spells Dec 21st 2006

ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG!! EEk! after seeing the local news talking about it I was like jumping up and down and ran literally to the computer and chunking things when it was going to slow. Thank you Mugglenet and Micah for getting results!

Posted by mave Dec 21st 2006

This is in response to karry black, Yes I do agree that both terms are diffrent but "hallow" is not a noun it is and adjective, normally. It means to make holy. Deathly hallows could mean that they are horcruxes, but the horcruxes he still has to find that we know about arnt holey.

Posted by SCPGOH_ad24 Dec 21st 2006

hahah my friend called me on my cell phone and was like, "OMGOMGOMGOMOGMOG." so i start freaking out and say, "whats wrong." and then she tells me, and i SCREAM "OHMYGOD! are you serious?" and then my mom starts panicking because she thinks something is wrong. i was so mad though because i always log on to mugglenet the second i get home, and today was the one day i didn't and the title is posted. anyway. great today. i'm so happy. i immedietly started calling all my HP loving friends.

Posted by kkWombat Dec 21st 2006

this person said one part of THREE reasons why JKR is brilliant with this title...1) Posted by viaaurelia1310 11 hours ago - Deathly Hallows are of course the Horcruxes. A hallow is a holy or sacred item. Deathly.. well, we saw what happened to Dumbledore after handling a Horcrux... and isn't book 7 about finding and destroying the horcruxes and then voldemort? I think that's what the title means: Horcruxes. 2) and b4 i began to read the above and many other fabu comments on mugglenet about todays announcement, i already e'd you and think the Hallows refers to something significant happening AGAIN on Halloween as well as the ORIGINAL horrific Halloween when Lily & James were murderer and Harry got the scar that sealed his "fate". 3) i agree, too, with many others' comments that if hallow can refer to saints or saintliness (All Hallows Eve is the Eve Before All Saints Day Nov. 1 - the day that Hagrid freed Harry from Godric's Hollow and got him to the Dursleys via Dumbledore's orders/safety-spell-setup , that this hints at Harry acting/becoming Saint-like...oh dear...I hope this doesn't mean JKR kills him off...didn't seem like it during her slip up at Radio City Music Hall when she talked about whom she'd invite to dinner if she could...perhaps Hagrid will be considered a Saint in the end b/c that same slip-up made me think he'd eat it in hp7? i think Snape will be the 2nd non-extra death, too...two most "wronged" characters who come/turn/realized (as) good? sorry 4myGrammarFauxPas!
